The worst windows 2000 book I've read to date
This book has been very poorly edited with numerous typos in the text and the illustrations which make it confusing and frustrating to read - I would hesitate to buy another book from this publisher again. Buy something else instead - this isn't worth the price.

Good way to learn AD
I read Curt Simmons'Creating Active Directory Infrastructures book and bought this one as well. This book is very easy to read and covers AD in a visual way. The book crawls all over the AD tools and shows you how to and why to configure this or that. It also has info about design and planning as well as DNS, DHCP, and other networking services. It's kind of a different way to learn a high level topic, but I liked it, and it will be a great reference book.

Useful But Uneven Overview of .NET for Software Architects
In 254 pages prolific Microsoft technologies author (more than fifteen titles) Curt Simmons and newcomer Ash Rofail do a quick 254-page survey of .NET.

Part I, 1/3 of the book, gives a quick overview of the development environment including the common language runtime, framework classes, web services, ASP.net, ADO and XML. Part II has one brief chapter on the seven key MS server products that provide the horsepower behind the applications developed for .NET. An appendix covers the basic of Windows 2000 Server and Active Directory.

The book is meant as an overview for IS managers and software architects. Developers may want to read another book for their first look; C# is not even mentioned. The book is a bit uneven with unexpected bursts of detail on, for example, XML code and later on SQL Server.

I found the book useful, after several months working on a .NET project, as a quick check on whether our contemplated architecture was taking advantage of all of the Microsoft technologies. I am not sure that I would have enjoyed the book if I had not been already fairly well read on .NET; but none of the other overviews that I have read covered all of the MS technology bases. Architecture mistakes are costly, so the $... is well spent.

Curt Simmons writes nicely so the book is a quick read.

Relates the "Big Picture" but not much detail
This book would be helpful if you need a big picture of Microsoft's product line under the .NET banner. It's brief and readable, not going into much detail under any section. In the first part, the authors cover the .NET framework but give rather skimpy coverage to ADO.NET. The second section describes the .NET Enterprise servers. Much of the material can be gathered from other sources, although the authors tie it together with some basic descriptions of e-commerce strategies, web services, and how the servers are employed. However I think the retail price is a bit high for the value added.

If you want to get a broad overview of .NET and don't need descriptions of the .NET Enterprise servers, I would suggest "Introducing .NET" instead of this book, since it provides more detail. If you don't care about the $$ but want an easy read pulling together Microsoft's strategy and product line, this book might suffice.

Tacky, Tacky, Tacky
If you want to know what a really tacky
person from New Jersey ( the nice part of
New Jersey, mind you) who stops in at a
Manhattan restaurant after seeing a
broadway show thinks of any given restaurant,
this book is for you.

If not, you many find it annoying and
offensive. There are no actual reviews just
sentences constructed from cliches which readers
have mailed in to get their free copy of the
book.

"The gastronomic Bible."
This book contains information and opinions from 25,922 surveyors about 1,924 restaurants in New York City. The restaurant directory is alphabetized and includes a small review about the place and it is rated for it's food, decor and service. The average price of dinner, a drink and a tip is mentioned, so you will have a general idea of how expensive the restaurant is. It also gives the restaurant's address and phone number.

Another nice thing about this book is that it's slender, so it would easily slip into your bag if you wanted to carry it around. In a city like New York, where there are many dining choices, "Zagat Survey 2003: New York City Restaurants" is an essential book for tourists and locals!

Chevrolet Monte Carlo Automotive Repair Manual: 1970 Thru 1988

TOO GENERAL
This manual claims to cover all Monte Carlos from 70-88 because they are all basically similar. The book stops covering the major specs. on the Monte from 84-88. It lacks detail and specific information on the later Montes. It has a revision section, however, that is also lacking. Illustrations on body and engine work are from older Montes and troubleshooting for computer trouble is almost nill. If your not an expert mechanic like me and you need to work on your 84-88 it will get the ball rolling for you but after that your on your own. There should be a manual for 84-88.

A wonderful gift item
This inexpensive Dover book is a charming English compilation of eleven of Aleichem's tales. The majority are written in a first person stream-of-consciousness narrative and you definitely get the impression that someone is sitting in front of you talking your ear off! Peppered with cadence, I'm sure the tales are even better in Yiddish, but this is a wonderful look into Aleichem's true talent - showing the pain and humor that was part of the Jewish experience for hundreds of years.

Mistaking Africa: Curiosities and Inventions of the American Mind
Published in Paperback by Westview Press (1999)
Authors: Curtis A. Keim and Curt Keim
Amazon base price: $30.00
Used price: $12.00
Average review score:

Good, but needs work
I picked this book up as a curiosity, to see what myths there are concerning Africa and if I might harbor a few of my own. For the most part, its successful in stating the many fabrications about the continent, the people on it, and how it all started. These points not withstanding, Mistaking Africa lacked much. To begin with, the author loses his objectivety in many points which seem to point to a tendency to placate rather than teach. In an effort to make the book non-controversial, he doesn't touch African history, glosses over modern racism involving black culture, and makes unsupportable assumptions as to African American views concerning Africa. He is a fence straddler and fence straddling leads to poor scholarship. He debunks some myths, but leaves enough to still make the subject seem inferior. I would suggest before reading this book, read more on Afican history. Introduction to African Civilizations is an excellent primer. Keim makes parts of this book laughable, such as when he does go briefly into history. He talks of the first people to populate the earth. He does state that they began in Africa, but says that they were not black Africans, but a very light people. This is one part of the book that he should state is opinion, since he doesn't give a resource for that particular information. As I stated earlier, please read up on African history before reading this book.

This book was a very basic book on Internet Accounting. I probably could have written the same book, but it would have been better!

MCSE Windows XP Professional Study Guide (Exam 70-270)

Not a good value for anyone
Whether you are an experienced admin or a new MCSE candidate, you should avoid this book. The sample questions presented here do not in any way resemble the actual exam questions and will lull you into a false sense of security. Look for an exam guide that has highly detailed questions. The included CD-ROM is also not helpful in that it contains a mere 60 questions - none of which resemble the actual exam. Don't waste your money.

Does not meet criteria..
I bought this book to study for exam 70-270. I can not remember if there were reviews of other titles available, or if I bought this book on good faith, regardless. This book is one gleaming, steaming, dungpile of wasted time and money bound in a Hardback for you pleasure. The technical content presented, combined with the quiz method provided in the self tests will assure you waste hard earned money. I read this book cover to cover, and just happened to read a review before taking 70-270. Heaven looked down on me. You have a sense when performing the end of chapter self-test question that "This seems too easy. Or, the wrong answers are too easy to isolate." Dont waste your time or money. Oh, and btw, if you see one of these books in your local book store, and you happen to need to relieve yourself... Put it to good use and bring it in the bathroom with you.. No silly, dont read it.. Wipe your arse with it.

100% coverage in very general terms
Test preparation in a VERY general sense. If I wanted a book that simply told me "what I should know" I could have written it with 30 pages in paperback. Don't let it's size fool you. Even its included tests are easy and nothing even close to that you'll get have on the exam. The material on the CD makes it look even better. But its just more vague material. This book is also not the detailed reference that you by with the smaller book.
