Puzzles About Art: An Aesthetics Casebook

Amazon base price: $29.15
Used price: $14.86

Puzzles provide exciting introduction to aesthetics.
"Puzzles About Art" is a welcome and refreshing departure from the standard approach to philosophical aesthetics which can often make the novice shake her head and wonder how philosophical debates could be relevant to resolving issues in art. Following trends in comtemporary ethics, Battin uses both fictional and factual puzzle cases to introduce and highlight many of the problems which arise when making judgements concerning art. The puzzles are written in such a way that even the philosophically uninitiated can begin to take up and discuss the issues and to feel the tensions inherent in the puzzles.

The puzzles cover a wide-range of aesthetic issues including the definition of art, interpretation, and conflicts between art and other values. Each section begins with a discussion of the main issues highlighted in the following cases and some of the ways in which philosophers have tried to resolve the issues presented.

I came across this book while searching for a suitable resource to help introduce primary-aged students to philosophical aesthetics, but needed a more active approach that would capture the interest and curiousity of children. The puzzles are constructed in such a way that many can be stripped of their more advanced concepts and adapted for this age group, yet retain much of their force and intrigue.

If you are interested in issues in aesthetics or in teaching aesthetics, it is definitely worth looking at this book!

Versatile
This was a thought provoking text, easily digestible and not intimidating. I found this book to be selectively useful with a wide range of students. My middle school students were stimulated by a selection of "puzzles" to decide art's validity and purpose. I plan to send this book to a college professor as well, knowing that the thought provoking segments will also be enticing for him to use in his class in Nice, France.

Quotations for Martial Artists: Hundreds of Inspirational Quotes to Motivate and Enlighten the Modern Warrior

Excellent bunch of quotes - not just for matrtial artists
There are a ton of really inspirational quotes in here. I am a salesperson (and I have practiced tae kwon do for 2 years), and I find the quotes in this book good for both endeavors.

The book is well organized and just the right size for travel. I find it fun just to leaf through it. I just bought a copy for my son as well who has just started tae kwon do. I hope that he'll find something in there that will keep him training.

excellent - should be on every martial artist's shelf
What a good idea - quotes specifically for martial artists. Although not all the quotes in this book come from martial artists there are a lot of quotes from Musashi, Ueshiba, Bruce Lee etc. There are also a ton from sports, military etc.

I particularly liked the sections on leadership and humor.

I really enjoyed reading through this book, I'm sure I'll go back to it time to time to find a quote or two.

an excellent brief reference book
This is a well-organized, clear, short reference work. Well done

The (little) Red book...
Here is the little red bok.
If the big one is too expensive for you, you can always buy this. You'll find inside all the important protocols and data for molecular biology. It's up to date, and clearly presented.
Try it, and then buy the big one!

A very good reference manual
This book is an essential tool for people in the scientific field such as Molecular Biology (obviously), Biochemistry, and Neuroscience. It is comprehensive and up-to-date as far as the techniques are concerned. It is good value in a sense that you don't have to buy the whole "Current Protocols Series" which costs an arm and a leg if you do. Although nowadays, a lot of "kits" are commercially available, the techniques found in this book explain principles and provide different alternatives suited for your needs. Molecular Cloning by Maniatis et al., although needs updating, is still a helpful reference in my opinion and it complements this book.

Conspiracy of One: The Definitive Book on the Kennedy Assassination

conspiracy of one
Since reading this book, the JFK murder has never again occured to me as the "evil conspiracy" that so many others would have us to believe. MR. Moore makes an outstanding presentation of the evidence. Why Mr. Moore's long years of research and conclusions have not recieved the national attention it deserves is a mystery unto itself. Oswald did it, alone, end of story.

Required reading, if you are REALLY looking for the truth ..
But I suspect the vast majority of JFK assassination readers are more interested in, as Posner put it, chasing shadows on the grassy knoll. Moore's book helped deliver me from the semi-quandry of lies, half-truths and lunatic ravings that comprise most conspiracy books. In fact, I too, traveled to Dallas for the first assasination convention -- mainly to hear Moore defend his book. He did quite well, considering that he was treated with a rather large dose of disrespect and ridicule by the researchers there. (A bigger collection of kooks, the mentally ill, and paranoids you'll NEVER find ... I highly recommend checking out any JFK assasination gathering just for a laugh.) But back to the book ... hoot at it if you will, but it is one of the most rational, well-reasoned accounts on the murder that you'll find. No one with a reasonable view of the world can read it and blindly defend Oswald as a patsy. The facts are just too strong against him, as Moore points out ... also, the preservation of any conspiracy would have involved half of Dallas, probably even including my aunt and uncle who were working in Big D that day. And I have no reason to believe they were anywhere near the grassy knoll.

Conspiracy Buff 12-Step Program
If you are interested in the Kennedy assassination and happen to stumble across this book - Read it! If for no other reason, it is one of only a handful of books that have ever been written on this topic that does *not* bash the basic conclusion reached by the Warren Commission, that Lee Harvey Oswald assassinated (by himself) the president. One of the most interesting aspects of this book is Jim Moore's metamorphosis from a conspiracy junkie into a more rationale view of the assassination. He doesn't just bash the conspiracy buffs for their selfish exaggerations, but he lets the reader IN on what truly motivates these individuals. He was once one himself! But now he has seen the light and encourages others to do the same. Sadly (for some), the story surrounding the assassination of John Kennedy is nothing more than a disturbed, 24-yr-old ex-Marine taking his mail order rifle to work one day, pointing it out the window and pulling the trigger three times - snuffing out the life of the most powerful man in the world.

Good overview of P2P technologies - not for developers
Gives a good overview of Peer-to-Peer technologies. This book is *NOT* for developers albeit it does have some technical depth. It has a fairly good general section on Groove - certain quotes from the book:
"Groove is the 800-pound gorilla of corporate P2P computing" (on page 19).
"Groove is the Cadillac of collaboration technoligies" (on page 55).
Overall, this is a book to get a good general grasp on P2P technologies and its directions.

GREAT BOOK!
Everybody with or without P2P experience will be able to find something interesting, new and useful in this book. Book has clear definitions, real world examples, practical technology explorations and no-nonsense solutions. Strongly recommend!

Good Book For Java Developers
This is really a good book for Java Developers who wish to develop XML based applications. Couple of chapters have good examples and explains concepts in a very clear format. Also the book is upto date with all the latest concepts in XML world.

Great Resource
I have been working with XML for a while now, and this book offered a great coverage of most aspects of what XML application developers need to know. I am not able to keep up with everything happening in this very broad part of the industry - and this book provided enough coverage of the areas I'm not able to focus on on a regular basis to help me stay current. I'd recommend it for anyone who's working with specific areas within XML and want to stay current with the broader scope of what is going on. I'd also recommend it for anyone who is new to XML and wants to know the various Java APIs out there.

Good Book for Java Developers
This is surely one of the Best Books availale in Market for Java Developers. I have been waiting to read a Book which covers all the latest XML API and how use them using latest Java Tools. Thanks to Wrox Publications for bringing this book to us. It covers how to do XML programming using all the latest Java API line I/O Sockets, Developing Presentation Logic, Developing Configuration and Deployment logic, Using XML in B2B applications. In short no other book in Market provides such a clear understanding of how to develop Java Based XML Applications.

Also it clearly explains how to use the latest Java Based XML Parsers like Xerces, Xalan and more. Friends if you need to get upto date with all the latest Java Based Parsers and different XML API, then this Book is really the Best one.

ARMED ROBBERY TRAINING MANAUL
I FOUND THE BOOK VERY SPECIFIC ON WHAT AND WHAT NOT TO DO IN CERTAIN SITUATIONS.THE INFORMATION PROVIDED WILL BE VERY HELPFUL TO ME, AS I AM A BANK TELLER MYSELF.

The Armed Robbery Training Manual CD-ROM Is For You!
I fully recommend The Armed Robbery Training manual on CD-ROM to anyone and any location which could be randomly selected for the crime of Armed Robbery.

Now that we have entered the Year 2000, and the world did not come to an end, the criminal element has once again set to work to wreak havoc upon Mom and Pop stores, retail convenience stores, fast food restaurants, retail chain stores, armored couries and even postal carriers. All of these occupations can be categorized as High-Risk occupations and High-Risk workplaces. It goes without saying that Banks and other financial institutions are certainly high risk workplaces, but with the newest coined phrase, "Going Postal" and the fatal and life-threatening incidents which have taken place in our nation's postal facilities, the playing field has greatly expanded to each and every postal location becoming a hazardous, high-risk workplace. Armed Robbers, throughout the nation, have taken "Going Postal" still another step by boldly committing armed robberies against carriers in "your" neighborhood and community. The time for honing awareness, training, Intervention and prevention skills and tactics is now! The Armed Robbery Training Manual on CD-ROM is that answer. I have used both the diskette version and the CD-ROM version and I can attest that the CD-ROM is one of the best anti-Armed Robbery I have seen in many, many years. I can see that someone, probably the publisher has come before me and has listed the contents, but the latest CD-ROMs have been continuously enhanced with more and more information, which will continue to help both employers and employees in any at-risk or high-risk workplace.

The local food store you shop at now may not be the safest place to buy your food if their employees and security staff have not been properly trained in what to do and what not to do before, during and after an Armed Robbery, which includes how to safeguard customers and innocent citizens. This goes for your Bank, Convenience Store, Retail Clothing Store, Your favorite Sit-Down Restaurant, Fast Food Restaurant (Remember Wendy's in New York and Luby's in Killeen, Texas and McDonalds on California), your favorite Dance Club and more. If they are not properly trained if it occurs while you are there, then your life and safety are also at-risk and in jeopardy. While it may not have happened to you yet, it's something to think about. We all know how to keep ourselves reasonably safe, but what happens when that safety is threatened and we are unable to trust those who wield the responsibility to protect us.

The next time you go to any of the locations listed above, ask the Store Manager or Proprietor or the uniformed or plainclothes security officer if he or she has been properly trained on What To Do and What Not To Do in the event of an Armed Robbery, especially if it occurs while you and your children are patronizing the store or facility.

If they can't reasonably answer you to your complete personal satisfaction, they may not have because of the overwhelming belief that "It Can't (or Won't) Happen Here!" ... please feel free to refer them to the Armed Robbery Training Manual on CD-ROM, readily available for acquisition from Amazon.Com.

Armed Robbery is a grim reality and an important concern in our seemingly modern society. It's better to prepare and not have to use the training and tactics, than not to prepare and experience victimization on a grand scale.

Five stars is not nearly enough of a rating for The Armed Robbery Training Manual on CD-ROM, because the training it offers to properly prepare the at-risk workplace, the high-risk workplace, the school, the retail faclity, the library or any target which may be randomly selected by Armed Criminals has the unique capability of saving innocent lives, and because it's just that important!

Worth it for "Blades" alone, an example of how to do Batman
I've read all of the stories in this Batman TPB, and while the Bat-Mite and Poison Ivy tales are OK, the first tale, "Blades" by Robinson and Sale, is spectacular. If you're a fan of "Starman" or anything else by Robinson, buy this quick. If you like great storytelling and great art by Sale, buy this quick!

Kick Butt!
I especially liked the story with Bat-Mite! HE is so cute and funny. "Hothouse" is a little confusing though, but I think I pretty mush got it down.

An Allegory of Beauty and Dread
John L. Moore shines when writing of tough men living off a tough land. Here, by thrusting his ideas into an apocalyptic future, Moore once again tells of rugged people coming to grips with God's place in the hardships of life.

His main character, Daniel, is an AWOL lieutenant on the run through the wastelands of an America devasted by plague. Chased by Robert, another Army-trained assassin, Daniel comes upon groups of religious zealots, cannibals, and babbling fools. With little emotion, Daniel faces these challenges. The real test comes when a beautiful woman named Deborah enters the picture. Soon Daniel is serving as Deborah's guide, unaware that she will become much more the guide than he. Along the way, they will face love, death, horror, and redemption.

Moore's writing, as always, is lean and sparkling, with sentences full of wisdom and spiritual themes. His dialogue between Daniel and Deborah brings the story to dazzling life. The repartee is dry and witty and full of character. Although I appreciated some of the allegorical elements further along, I felt they were a distraction from the totally absorbing relationship between the two main characters. As the allegorical section faded, once again Daniel and Deborah are thrust together (although in very different roles) and surprises are revealed that lead to a life and death confrontation. Moore foreshadows his major surprise quite well (so well, I guess, that I had it figured out half way through the book), but the message is still effective and I highly recommend the book.

Well written and exciting.
I brought this book not realizing it was both "Christian" and "science fiction" I was surprised at the ability of the writer to pull me into the landscape, as I live in the Bitterroot area of Western Montana. John Moore does an excellant job of bringing his "Daniel" and Daniel's world to life. The groups left after world wide disasters are believable to a western mindset. Some of them live here now. As to the Christian message, I say "well done". I will be looking at more of this writers work.

real thoughtprovoking and intriguing!
This book captures your attention from the very beginning. The characters come to life and even when you put it down you are thinking of the faith of the girl with the beautiful eyes... It provoked me to desire a deeper walk with God...to have only one purpose to tell others about Jesus and their eternal salvation, to move into such a relationship with God that I would love not my life unto death and care only about others finding Christ. What a movie this would make!

What awful writing.
This is such a contrived story. It will make you want to quit comics for good.

A different view on a well known character
In the last decade Superman has been through a lot and I was glad I was there for the ride..This isnt a typical Superman story but a Elseworlds story which for those who do know is take a character and put them in a diffrent timeline or alternate reality etc.. As a whole this book is a good read for any Superman fan who fancys something differnt..Definetly one of the better Elseword world books after Kingdom Come and The Kingdom. The plot is simple what if story but if you've never read Superman you really wont have a clue as to who is who in the book..All in all a fantastic read for those who read Superman a lot

A Different kind of Superman stroy
The Man of Steel is totally redefined in this tough, gritty elseworlds story. It's a totally new kind a superman story, one that is violent, bloody, and surprisingly dark. Only for those who like elseworlds.
