a return to classics
I went to Columbia, with the most prominent 'great books' curriculum still in existence. 25 years later, I'm finding myself re-reading and discussing many of the titles. The Penn Greek Drama series is a handsome library of new translations that give fresh takes on the classics. It's useful to have Euripides on the shelf when you return home from the recent bravura performance by Fiona Shaw as Medea--it settled an argument too on how it 'originally' ended.

Discover the Too-Often Hidden Dimensions of Real Wealth
Thinking evangelical Christians should find this book helpful. So would any other thinking person. Gary Moore brings his personal experiences, profound wisdom, and deep spirituality together to strip away the smoke and mirrors that all too often confuse people both spiritually and financially. He never promises riches. He does provide a firm, spiritually-oriented foundation that should help most people do very constructive things for others and themselves with their financial resources.

Some of what he has to say is the insight he has gained as a financial advisor and student of theology. Some is time-honored common sense. Sadly, as he reveals, too often religious and other leaders have advocated other paths, and the results may have been painful for those who took their advice.
Virtually anyone, from the wealthiest to those with very modest incomes, can find something in this volume which will be helpful and not difficult to follow. Moore empowers by giving the reader possibilities into what he or she may personally do to be a responsible steward, and his approaches literally work around the world. If you want to strengthen or renew your hope in your faith, yourself, and your world then "Faithful Finances 101" is an excellent place to start.

Genera Palmarum: A Classification of Palms Based on the Work of Harold E. Moore, Jr.
Published in Paperback by International Palm Society (1987)
Authors: Natalie W. Uhl, John Dransfield, and Marion Ruff Sheehan
Amazon base price: $80.00
Used price: $177.88
Average review score:

The best book to expand an existing knowledge about palms.
I'm a novice interested in the great variety of the palms. I'm also interested in taxonomy (classification). Having read several general books on palms (learning many of the genera and how to grow them), I wanted the "big picture" of how they all fit together. Genera Palmarum is perhaps the gold standard for palm taxonomy. Every palm (200 genera) is included, and given a place. One can immediately locate a genus, and discover its defining characteristics (as well as superb line drawings of a representative species). One can then discover how the genus differs from other closely related genera.

THE BOOK on Wireless
We have been trying to decide on some of the best wireless initiatives for our company for quite some time. This book was incredibly useful in understanding where some of the industry leaders see the future going. I especially liked the chapter written by the CEO of AT&T Wireless. This book is a must have for anyone interest in wireless opportunities or in the wireless industry.

Man on Fire/El hombre en llamas

Imagination Unextinguished: Luis Jimenez's "Man on Fire"
Try to imagine that someone captured all the stars in the sky, molded them into straining human and animal shapes and then sealed them beneath a glistening coat of spring rain. If you can fix that image in your mind you have some slight idea of the power of the sculpture of Luis Jimenez. This artist uses materials that you'd expect to see gracing the clear-coated skins of street rods to make amazing sculptures of men and women who work hard for a living, play hard for life and face Death like a long-lost lover. In his book "Man on Fire" you see a collection of the various stages of the ideas that have sprung from this creative man's mind. It is fascinating to see the pencil drawing receive color, then go on to a maquette and finally a finished sculpture that more often than not looks like liquid fire trapped momentarily in solid form. It is equally fascinating to see and read about what inspired Mr. Jimenez to combine such diverse influences to create uniquely new works. Having seen several of Mr. Jimenez's pieces in person, I can say that the pictures in this book pale in comparison to the real pieces but then a pale reflection of near-perfection is still near perfection. I'd recommend this book and this artist to anyone interested in something beyond the usual and I look forward to seeing more of his work in the future.

A beautifully designed book-a true gem
John Hedgeoce's amazing eye has captured the essence of Henry Moore's work. It is so difficult to reduce the size and shape of such monumental work to paper but for those of us who do not own one we can share them on a daily basis by way of this superb work.

A framework for true reconciliation in Northern Ireland
John Hume is a virtually unknown figure in the United States, but he has been steadily gaining recognition due to his work in the Northern Irish peace agreement. This recognition is overdue and much deserved. This monumental book outlines Hume's political philosophy - a philosophy which seeks to brush aside the vengefulness and intransigence of Northern Ireland's past, searching instead for reconciliation through justice for all. Hume is heavily influenced by Matin Luther King, Jr. and John F. Kennedy, and quotes from these two figures flavor Hume's text. Hume's themes may seem repetitive, and his ideas seem to be based on the shakey foundation of human progress, but this work demonstrates that he is a champion for for a true peace in Northern Ireland - a peace that is just for all.

The Book(s) That Started it All
Like the title says, this is the book (or collection thereof) that started the best (IMHO) comic book series ever. This shows how the GenX kids got together, and it depicts their first adventure together, sadly however, there is one who will not stay with them for very long. A MUST READ for any comic book fan!

A Quiet Strength Roars with Astute Wisdom
Of all of the meditation books specifically for men, and there really are a number of them, A Quiet Strength is by far my favorite! While it has an issue and meditation for each of the 366 days, I prefer to look up an issue I am dealing with in the index and, every time, I get very pertinent advice. Now and then I leaf quickly through the pages, stopping abruptly and read the section I have stopped on. It always seems to be very pertinent to what is happening in my life at the time. This is well worth the time to search for a copy and encourage (them) to reprint. Your life and those around you will be much the better for it....
