A Nostalgic Book to take you back in time
I found this book 30 years ago and have read the treasured paperback edition about 15 times.

John Moore takes you back to a pre war small rural English village and introduces you to the inhabitants in such a way that you feel you are part of the community. The writing flows and it easy to follow. The book once read, need re-reading every couple of years. It is like visiting old friends. The Colonel, Mr Chorlton, the Hermit, the inhabitants of the pubs etc etc. Of all the books John Moore has written on English country life this is the best.

It is like an old friend to me.

Building Scientific Apparatus is great for a science fair!
My son chose to enter this year's science fair with an advance project that required vacume chamber construction, optics, and the original charged particle detection systems. This book is a perfect guide towards building most any mid-level research instrument.

An evocative guide to the past!
A Camera in the Dales is a photographic diary in monochrome! With its authentic photographs and pictureque verbal memories, it is a magical evocation of past custsoms in one of the most romantic dales in Yorkshire.

When he gave up smoking in the 'fifties, John Moore was able to buy a camera with the money he saved. This book, with its 56 monochrome photographs of the Yorkshire dales and dales life, is the result! The book is more than a colourful survey of the dales - it is a potted history, for many anecdotes, picaresque characters and old customs are captured here - through the lens of the camera and the sensitive mind of the author. The reader will be taken back not only to the days of Lady Anne Clifford, to the days of the carthorse and the blacksmith, but will witness the passing of the steam railway and the changing seasons in what must be one of the most beautiful parts of England

A thoroughly entertaining volume for its picaresque views of people and a place beloved of many! The photographs are a visual extension of the text which is clearly written by someone who loves the Dales.

Defoe's sources for Robert Drury's journal
Published in Unknown Binding by Haskell House Pub Ltd ()
Author: John Robert Moore
Amazon base price: $75.00
Average review score:

Defoe may have written it, but the events realy did occur
Robert Drury was a 15 year old English sailor when his ship The "Degrave" ran aground on Madagascar in the early 1700's. All the crew were either killed or enslaved by the natives. After 15 years, Drury escaped and returned to England. He left this account of his adventure when he died. Some say his journal is fiction and is the work of Daniel Defoe. But "Sources for Robert Drury" tells how church records of the time list a person who's name was Robert Drury or Robert Jury, and who was not only born at the time of the protagonist, but entered the navy at the same time. A recent expedition to Madagascar found that all locations and historical references in the book are accurate. If Defoe realy did write the book, then he first heard the story from the real Robert Drury.

Education and the Soul: Toward a Spiritual Curriculum

Old Words for New Education Talk
For those of us who are interested in bringing old values and giving new directions to our present day education talk- this is a good book.

The book begins with a brief thought provoking Foreword by Thomas Moore on the meaning of "real education".

The author, John Miller discusses "Education and the Soul" [book's title] in two parts. In the author's words Part-1:Exploring Soul, "explores the nature of the soul" and Part-2:Nurturing Soul, "deals with how we can bring the soul into our schools".

The first part is a dicussion of the relevance of the Soul in Education, different (religious, philosophic, and contemporary) views of the soul, and the love -soul- work relationship. The second part is a discussion of a spiritual curriculum. It offers practical suggestions for the evolution of a soulful- curriculum, teacher and school.

For those of us who believe in the primacy of the heart over the mind kind of education, where words like "loving kindness, mindfulness, ..." are important, this book will confirm our beliefs. It will encourage our endeavours with more ideas to think about and act upon. For skeptics, this book might make you want to pause and re-think your views and practices. It will invite you to "bring soul into our classrooms and schools".

This is good reading especially for teachers, researchers and educators.
