Having made this momentous decision to purchace some 40 books in the hope of making something of my obviously neurotic life, I panicked!
Can you imagine seeing 40-odd, expensive books, strewn across the living-room carpet, and hearing my response of "What the hell have I done?"!
Well, my long-suffering wife (yet!), who was in the book-trade at the time, brought home for me an edition of "THE SURVIVAL PAPERS" by Daryl Sharp, beautifully presented in a trade-paperback from Fulshams, U.K.
Daryl Sharp gave me an amazing insight, not only into my caotic state, but also into the nature of the neurosis as a "Creative Illness". Added to this were a guided tour of the "way-out", and an astonishing introduction to the Complete Works of Carl Gustav Jung - together with fully-indexed-quotes from the "C.W.", as well as a most useful reading list at the end of each chapter, designed to introduce me to modern applications of Jungian (so called) thinking and experience - with wonderfully relevent insights into world-famous literary figures e.g. Rilke and Kafka, both of whom I had been reading at the time - synchronicity?
The "Survival Papers" is, from my experience, an extraordinarily relevent read for those going through the Mid-life Transition; an highly accessable insight into the principles and experiences of psychic change, as well as a surprisingly disarming introduction to the world, person, and work, of Carl Gustav Jung.
What a joy to read! What entertainment! What learning and experience worn so lighly, and shared so deftly . . .
Buy this excellent book. Read it. Apply it as far as you are able before you dare pass it on to those whom you think "NEED IT"!
A word for Daryl Sharp.
Thank you . . . Thank you . . . Thank you . . .
A real Le Mot Juste!

A dark, unsettling tale, that will leave scars in those who read it.
A very well written novel that fascinated me as a reader with Madga's turbulent life and Mr. Jung reflections but what was not clear is the end of the novel, whatever happended after the admission of guilt and the recovery of Magda is very confussing and the moralizing end dissapointed me very much, I expected a more professional ending.

One good thing about the book is that it quotes extensively from Jung's Psychological Types, and those quotes do make sense. The book would have been much better if he had just quoted all of Jung's work, and left out his own mistakes.
Thompson clearly describes the function-attitudes and provides insightful examples and illustrations that help the reader to quickly understand their dynamic nature and impact on personality.
As a type practitioner, I have often struggled when trying to explain the effects of introverted and extraverted attitudes on the use of each function. Thompson has clearly and succinctly described the process so that anyone can easily understand it.
I wish someone had mentioned this book to me when I went through the MBTI qualification course - - it would have certainly made it easier to move beyond a basic level of understanding of Type theory!

I read it within a few hours, and just felt like I wasted my time. I remember right after reading, I felt like I only got one thing from the book. The worst part is I don't even remember what that thing was now. Obviously, it was anything life changing.
I really just thought it was a pointlessly long review on Jung, and his opinions. I didn't feel I understood Jung any better, nor did I feel like I got anything from the book at all.
Although I know the writer must have worked hard on it, to me, the book just came across as random words put together.
Maybe I was just expecting too much from such a small book. Who knows?
I would not necessarily recommend it, nor would I discourage the read. It doesn't take much time at all to finish, so you might just get something out of it.

This is not one of the better representation of Watts' extensive works for the simple reason that the presentation doesn't survive the translation from the spoken to the written word. There are passages here that go on and on ad nauseam only to make a minor point which was better explained in one of Watts' written works.
On top of this the editor, in preparing these lecture transcripts, let go some awkward wording and phrases in favor of preserving "the flavor and content" of the original talks. Unfortunately, all this accomplishes is to further engage the reader to reread some sections in an effort to try to recover the meaning in which they were originally spoken. This not only slows down the reading process but ads to the growing frustration the reader has in slogging through this material.
For the reader who is familiar with Watts' work, these transcripts cover little new ground, and in the end manage to restate, in a not altogether easily understandable colloquial language, favorite themes and topics Watts has covered elsewhere.
If you happen to come across this book in a library and you're wondering which of the seven lectures to dig into first, the last three are perhaps the best. These include "Historical Buddhism," "Philosophy of Nature," and "Tribute to Carl Jung."
For those of us who are Watts enthusiasts, we enjoy reading his works for his unusual ability to get to the essence of a point in an enlightening and sometimes entertaining way. Out of the Trap, however, provides few of these reading experiences.
These transcripts of Watts' talks would have been best left in their original form, as taped recordings, than to have been put on display in black and white where the flavor of the original presentation is missing as well as, perhaps, some of the fun.
Almost everything of value regarding the psychological image of the puer is available in the first chapter which is reprinted in Reclaiming the Inner Child by Jeremiah Abrams (ed). Here the reader will find an entire section on Eternal Youth and Narcissism including excellent chapters by Joel Covitz (Narcissism), Alice Miller (The Search for the True Self) and Jeffrey Satinover (The Childhood Self and the Origins of Puer Psychology). This last I especially recommend to anyone interested in the puer.

This quotation is out of context, of course, but its flavor illustrates what I mean: "I am afraid," decides Jung, "women often have a tendency to talk of things as they ought to be or as they desire them to be, or as they should become, but never as they are." UGH!! Still more alarming is how infrequently the audience openly questioned such outrageous remarks by the great man.
If you can get past all that and Jung's endless demonstrations of how smart he is, then you'll find treasures and glowing grottoes of psychological insight here and there, such as his brief description of how the Self differentiates out of the collective unconscious.
This edition has an informative intro that sums up some of the other issues brought into the seminar and why it was prematurely terminated.
