A Surprising Disappointment
Having read and completely enjoyed Sharp's book, "Jungian Psychology Unplugged," I was prepared to also love this one. Imagine my shocked disappointment to find that whole sections of "Jungian Psychology Unplugged" were, apparently, cut and pasted into the manuscript of this book, for which I paid! I'd guess that less than half the contents of "The Survival Papers" is original. Combined with the disgusting habits of the analysand, "Norman", this book is as complete a disappointment as "Jungian Psychology Unplugged" was satisfying. I wouldn't recommend buying both books at all. Sharp ought to be ashamed of himself for cheating his readers that way.

Worthwhile
What I like about Jung and Jungians is that they seem to be able to write concise books that have far-reaching implications. I liked this book. It's subject matter, straight married man's mid-life crisis, is a bit removed from me, but the dance between inner life and outer life endlessly fascinates and the process applies to all of us ultimately. This book is refreshing in that the author/analyst is a full-blown character, not a detached observer like happens with works I've read by Clarrisa Pinkola Estes, Robert Bly, and Marion Woodman among others. Sharp doesn't try to advance Jung's theories, just lets them play out. Fair enough. Make sure you read through to the end.

A Liberating Secret.
Ten years ago I spent my last income tax rebate cheque on the complete works of Carl Gustav Jung - in hardcover, no less! I was out of work for the fourth time and had no prospects whatever. I was a good ten years late for the "Mid-Life Transition" as well . . .

Having made this momentous decision to purchace some 40 books in the hope of making something of my obviously neurotic life, I panicked!

Can you imagine seeing 40-odd, expensive books, strewn across the living-room carpet, and hearing my response of "What the hell have I done?"!

Well, my long-suffering wife (yet!), who was in the book-trade at the time, brought home for me an edition of "THE SURVIVAL PAPERS" by Daryl Sharp, beautifully presented in a trade-paperback from Fulshams, U.K.

Daryl Sharp gave me an amazing insight, not only into my caotic state, but also into the nature of the neurosis as a "Creative Illness". Added to this were a guided tour of the "way-out", and an astonishing introduction to the Complete Works of Carl Gustav Jung - together with fully-indexed-quotes from the "C.W.", as well as a most useful reading list at the end of each chapter, designed to introduce me to modern applications of Jungian (so called) thinking and experience - with wonderfully relevent insights into world-famous literary figures e.g. Rilke and Kafka, both of whom I had been reading at the time - synchronicity?

The "Survival Papers" is, from my experience, an extraordinarily relevent read for those going through the Mid-life Transition; an highly accessable insight into the principles and experiences of psychic change, as well as a surprisingly disarming introduction to the world, person, and work, of Carl Gustav Jung.

What a joy to read! What entertainment! What learning and experience worn so lighly, and shared so deftly . . .

Buy this excellent book. Read it. Apply it as far as you are able before you dare pass it on to those whom you think "NEED IT"!

A word for Daryl Sharp.

Thank you . . . Thank you . . . Thank you . . .

A real Le Mot Juste!

broken glass, broken minds
Now, i would have rated this book five stars for the the first three quarters of it. Unfortunately, in the last quarter, Morris West slips badly, unable to really tie the loose ends. thats a pity, for here there was material for a masterpiece, but Morris catholic consciousness get the best of him. He ends up moralising, unable to meet head on the fiery demons he has raised. By the way this is fiction about analytical psychology, being about Jung. Psychoanalyis is a term only applied to freudian therapy. Based about a short note about a nameless patient, cited in "Memoirs, Dreams, Reflection", the quasi-autobiography of Jung, Morris West fictionalizes about that therapy, showing a great mastery of Jungian knowledge, but lacking the final, superior understanding of Jungian thought.
A dark, unsettling tale, that will leave scars in those who read it.

A Voyage Through Tormented Minds
Carl Jung, a Swiss psychiatrist, tormented by his internal conflicts and demons offered help to Magda Liliane Kardoss von Gamsfeld, a wealthy widow, to freed her demons in a doble psychotherapy session. Magda's revelations were hard to believe, its ran from sado-masochism relations and insest to murder.
A very well written novel that fascinated me as a reader with Madga's turbulent life and Mr. Jung reflections but what was not clear is the end of the novel, whatever happended after the admission of guilt and the recovery of Magda is very confussing and the moralizing end dissapointed me very much, I expected a more professional ending.

Jung and psycanalysis
Morris West face the psycanalysis world building a novel on a real misterious letter by Karl Gustav Jung that talked about a woman named magda. I readed it in 5 hours. If you love Morris West you must to read it.

nice book for beginners
a nicely written thin book on PET. all of the images were acquired using a GE PET Advance but this shouldn't deter siemens or other brand users. the first few chapters on the economics on putting up a PET scanner and cyclotron unit are a waste due to the different conditions existing in different countries. they should have spent more pages on cardiac PET. there is adequate coverage of neuro PET. oncologic PET, understandably, will never be enough as the science is still rapidly progressing. but this book should whet one's appetite for the other clinical oncology PET books around. i would have wanted a few chapters devoted to cyclotron and radiopharmacy operation since this is what a lot of PET MDs lack.

Positron Emission Tomography ; Correlation
Positron Emission Tomography is a non invasive, diagnostic imaging technique for measuring the metabolic activity of cells in the human body. It is useful clinically in patients with certain conditions affecting the brain and the heart as well as in patients with certain types of cancer. The field of PET has been quickly emerging into clinical diagnostic medicine. PET has been in clinical use since the early 1990s.

This is a very good book. This book covers from Basic to date advances in PET. All physical fields are describe. This book should be used as hand book of basic sicence of PETSCAN

Incomplete illustrations
I fell in love with Klimt after a trip to Vienna. This book was the first I purchased in hopes of taking some of his work with me, but I was sorely disappointed. Little of his most recognized work is included. Although the information was good, the illustrations were lacking.

u dont get it
every other review of this book has dumbfounded me. they dont get the concept of the book at all. i hear all the negative reviews, but for the wrong reasons, the book is brilliant and the best klimt out there and here's why. It's a window into the genius's mind, we get to see all of his sketches to each corresponding piece. for any real artist it's a jewel of composition, type design, and beautiful ideas. the people who want books of the famous pieces, are the same people who like the force fed music the radio stations give them and the women who wear broaches on sunday when they go for the annual museum outing (no offence grandma) . welcome to thinking for yourself. and finding out how gustav klimt thinks. good book....

Jung's Function-Attitudes Explained
Published in Paperback by Wormhole Pubns (1996)
Authors: Henry L. Thompson and D. Grenae Thompson
Amazon base price: $14.00
Used price: $10.98

Problems
This book has problems. The descriptions of functions are uneven and ambiguous, and full of questionable examples. Several of the descriptions of the functions are nothing more than assemblages of quotes and thin paraphrasings from Jung and other authors, strung together into long paragraphs that add up to nothing. The author also seems to have emotional biases toward and away from some types.

One good thing about the book is that it quotes extensively from Jung's Psychological Types, and those quotes do make sense. The book would have been much better if he had just quoted all of Jung's work, and left out his own mistakes.

An invaluable resource for Type practitioners!
This is an outstanding book - a must-have tool for type practioners, or anyone wishing to learn about type on a much deeper level.

Thompson clearly describes the function-attitudes and provides insightful examples and illustrations that help the reader to quickly understand their dynamic nature and impact on personality.

As a type practitioner, I have often struggled when trying to explain the effects of introverted and extraverted attitudes on the use of each function. Thompson has clearly and succinctly described the process so that anyone can easily understand it.

I wish someone had mentioned this book to me when I went through the MBTI qualification course - - it would have certainly made it easier to move beyond a basic level of understanding of Type theory!

Such little was said for such a big subject...
I didn't feel the thoughts in this book were well organized.

I read it within a few hours, and just felt like I wasted my time. I remember right after reading, I felt like I only got one thing from the book. The worst part is I don't even remember what that thing was now. Obviously, it was anything life changing.

I really just thought it was a pointlessly long review on Jung, and his opinions. I didn't feel I understood Jung any better, nor did I feel like I got anything from the book at all.

Although I know the writer must have worked hard on it, to me, the book just came across as random words put together.

Maybe I was just expecting too much from such a small book. Who knows?

I would not necessarily recommend it, nor would I discourage the read. It doesn't take much time at all to finish, so you might just get something out of it.

A fascinating survey into Jung's thoughts on the Divine.
Donald Dyer's Jung's Thoughts On God provides a blend of religion and psychology, providing a focus on Jung's writings on God and creating an interesting Christian-based probe of Jung's ideas. A fascinating survey into Jung's thoughts on spirituality and psychology.

Spiritual Know How Takes a Break at Your Expense
Subtitled "Selected Lectures of Alan Watts," Out of the Trap is not so much a book as it is a transcript of recorded lectures Mr. Watts gave in the 1960s and early 1970s. Edited and published as it was in 1985 by its creator's son, Mark Watts, this printed version of spoken words might best be titled "Things Better Said Elsewhere."

This is not one of the better representation of Watts' extensive works for the simple reason that the presentation doesn't survive the translation from the spoken to the written word. There are passages here that go on and on ad nauseam only to make a minor point which was better explained in one of Watts' written works.

On top of this the editor, in preparing these lecture transcripts, let go some awkward wording and phrases in favor of preserving "the flavor and content" of the original talks. Unfortunately, all this accomplishes is to further engage the reader to reread some sections in an effort to try to recover the meaning in which they were originally spoken. This not only slows down the reading process but ads to the growing frustration the reader has in slogging through this material.

For the reader who is familiar with Watts' work, these transcripts cover little new ground, and in the end manage to restate, in a not altogether easily understandable colloquial language, favorite themes and topics Watts has covered elsewhere.

If you happen to come across this book in a library and you're wondering which of the seven lectures to dig into first, the last three are perhaps the best. These include "Historical Buddhism," "Philosophy of Nature," and "Tribute to Carl Jung."

For those of us who are Watts enthusiasts, we enjoy reading his works for his unusual ability to get to the essence of a point in an enlightening and sometimes entertaining way. Out of the Trap, however, provides few of these reading experiences.

These transcripts of Watts' talks would have been best left in their original form, as taped recordings, than to have been put on display in black and white where the flavor of the original presentation is missing as well as, perhaps, some of the fun.

Images you tended under foreign skies
I was told that "Out of the Trap" was not as good as some of the other books Watts wrote, but i found it totally enlightening. Watts had done more for me than any number of so called "gurus" (I dont think Alan liked being called a guru) but if the shoe fits (its probably ugly hahahaah)i would recommend the purchase of this book to fill out your watts library, if you have one going, like me..unfortunaley some of Alan's books are out of print and I just dont know why. Have fun with it..relish the phrases and immerse yourself into the philosophy of Alan Watts.. thank you and good day (Cleedy has left the building)

Puer Aeternus
Published in Hardcover by Sigo Pr (1981)
Authors: Marie Louise Von Franz, Franz Marie Louise Von, and Marie-Louise von Franz
Amazon base price: $32.00
Average review score:

Too much jargon, not enough substance
Considered a "classic" by Jungians, I found this book to be so filled with Jungian imagery that it was not worth the trouble of wading through it all. The majority of the text is an analysis of The Little Prince, and would be of most value to one who wished to interpret this story.

Almost everything of value regarding the psychological image of the puer is available in the first chapter which is reprinted in Reclaiming the Inner Child by Jeremiah Abrams (ed). Here the reader will find an entire section on Eternal Youth and Narcissism including excellent chapters by Joel Covitz (Narcissism), Alice Miller (The Search for the True Self) and Jeffrey Satinover (The Childhood Self and the Origins of Puer Psychology). This last I especially recommend to anyone interested in the puer.

Peter Pan syndrome? Then you need to read this book!
I know very little about Jungian psychology, but this book caught my eye years ago. I started reading it again and it has made me aware of so much WHY about my life and struggles. It is frighteningly accurate in its descriptions of the puer aeternus and the best and worst of that archetype. I don't agree with some of the Jungian conclusions and assumptions, but the descriptive parts of this book are INVALUABLE if you're ready to face them. I'm finally facing them.

Take the Young Stranger by the Hand: Same-Sex Relations and the Ymca

Narrow focus keeps things dull
The story of the YMCA is an interesting one, but unfortuantely this book focuses in on tiny bits of facts that render the whole thing much less interesting than might be expected. But this is really more an exercize in documenting than anything else. Still, it is informative about how mutable and powerful our theories of of sexuality are.

YMCA, It 's More Than Just A Song
John Donald Gustav-Wrathall's study of same-sex relations and the YMCA, Take the Young Stranger by the Hand, is a very focused study taking the reader from the origins of the YMCA, with its plethora of bachelor secretaries and intense friendships through the early decades of the twentienth century and its fear of deviancy and into the cruising of later decades. To be sure, the bulk of the book is on the earlier and middle periods. Two of the chapters also focus on women to some extent. It is interesting to see how the YMCA came into being and how its development echoed the social development of the society it was a part of and, even more fascinating, the ways in which it tried to influence society. This book fits into homosexual history but is broader in contexst than that as it is truly the history of same-sex relations, including sexual, but also including friendship and mentoring and sometimes comibinations of all three. It is the story of the changing homosocial environment all people of a certain class (middle) lived within.

my least favorite Jung seminar
Although peppered with Jung's usual mix of intuition with vast erudition, this seminar, based on a series of visions experienced by lay analyst Christiana Morgan, was painful to read, perhaps because Jung's racist bigotry and unresolved feelings toward women was so evident throughout it. He is particularly adept at interpreting women's strength and assertiveness as pathological animus activities, nor does he pause to wonder at the impatience in some of his statements or the disagreeing reactions of some of the women in his audience.

This quotation is out of context, of course, but its flavor illustrates what I mean: "I am afraid," decides Jung, "women often have a tendency to talk of things as they ought to be or as they desire them to be, or as they should become, but never as they are." UGH!! Still more alarming is how infrequently the audience openly questioned such outrageous remarks by the great man.

If you can get past all that and Jung's endless demonstrations of how smart he is, then you'll find treasures and glowing grottoes of psychological insight here and there, such as his brief description of how the Self differentiates out of the collective unconscious.

This edition has an informative intro that sums up some of the other issues brought into the seminar and why it was prematurely terminated.

Jung at His Best
Masterful. Not only do we see here Jung's impressive grasp of psyche, symbol, and the history of symbolic manifestation, there is a most subtle handling of the course material, which almost seems to have a life of its own. Just when we might think that things in the seminar are going awry, Jung comes back with a clear purpose, meaning, and illumination on the subject at hand. Highly recommended for anyone interested in Jung's ideas and the symbolic manifestations of the psyche.
