Within the first few pages you are caught up wanting to know more about this wonderful odd-ball character Flap and what will happen as he, a Native American, tries to reclaim the land where Phoenix, Arizona now stands for his people according to a long lost, but firm agreement. I have read this book five times and now that I see it is being republished, I just started it again.

I read this book back in the 70s while living on an Indian Reservation. The book brings to light very real problems but does so with laughter. The laughter runs the gamut from the giggle type to the roll on the floors with tears running down your face type. The book catches the nuances of problems faced by Native Americans, and does so without "preaching" about solutions or causes. It is a marvelous book. When it is re-issued, it will once again, have it's place of honor in my book case.

Would recommend this book as a positive have to read. Next to The Cowboy and the Cossack, there hasn't been any books available for some fantastic reading and belly laughs to go along with the events that unfold (no hints to give away the story, just read no matter what your preference for reading is. Just wish I could find the movie that was made with Anthony Quinn, remember it and one fantastic piece of art, period. This book is definitly worth the price, I have two, honest, and would not part with either, as One is a first print, Untouchable.

I thought this book was one of the best books in the Chip Hilton Sports Series! I have read almost the entire series, and trust me, this one is GREAT comparing to a lot of the other super stories in the series.

I just purchased this book and read it and I really, really enjoyed it. I can't wait until a purchase another book and I hope to read the whole series. Great story for anyone!

Despite what I consider unnecessary political correctedness and modern terms, none of the flavor of the lessons learned nor the courage, strength and dedication of the Valley Falls athletes are lost. They are still there valid and apparent today as they were 50 years ago. I am very glad they are back and await my chance to read them all again ... new versions of not ...

This book is fabulous. I am a beginner and it covers each rose in depth. At the front of the book is fascinating history on roses. Especially how roses were such a commodity in the 1600-1700 & 1800's. They even stopped a ship blockade to let the roses in.

Although this book isn't all-inclusive (after all, the title is 100 old roses), this is the book I reach for first. It's great when I'm trying to find out more information on a rose in a catalog, or looking for an old rose for a specific spot. First of all, I can't resist the pictures (but they may be slightly misleading as in the case of Blanc Double de Coubert which I've never seen growing with the great cutting stem as shown). Second, the text makes for amusing reading. It's oppinionated, and I like that. Third, there's the handy Index of Old Garden Roses by Color in the back. It's actually a little summary: flower style, plant type, and class e.g. Madame Isaac Pereire: cupped, tall, Bourbon. Very handy. The only thing that would make this better is if it had scratch and sniff (unfortunately not realistic)...since scent is such a subjective thing (I was so hot for Louise Odier until I smelled her and was surprised to find that I didn't like the fragrance).

If you are interested in growing roses and want to try some that are not just your basic Hybrid Teas, this is a wonderful book to get. You will drool over the pictures and the text is excellent. The pictures take one page and are a gorgeous shots of the bloom with a long stem and leaves. On the opposite page is text which goes into great detail about the rose characteristics, growth patterns, habits, vigor, etc. It is an invaluable book when trying to decide what old garden roses to introduce to your garden.

This format is so beautful and so useful, that I have purchased all of the gardening books in this "series" by this publisher. It is rare to get such excellent photos in combination with such useful text.

I started growing roses about five years ago and became frustrated with Hybrid Teas because of blackspot and their generally fussy behavior and stiff, formal flowers. This book and Liz Druitt's book were instrumental in getting me to try old garden roses, and am I glad I did! I would highly recommend this to both beginning gardeners and experienced, alike.

I first found this book when I was about 15 years old, and I have read it at least ten times since then. At times, I read my favorite parts just for fun. This is one of my all-time favorite books, and is one of the best-written books, in my opinion. I highly recommend it to anyone, but especially to those who have an interest in the white peoples' history with Native Americans. It is a humbling education. But, all in all, it is a wonderfully told romantic story that will warm your heart and bring tears to your eyes each time you read it. Naduah (Cynthia Ann) is an amazing person and should be admired. As should the author of this book.

Then I suggest you pick this book right away and start reading ~~ it will be one book that you will never forget. I know. I re-read it every year and have been doing so for the last 10 years. I first picked it up during a summer working in Yellowstone ~~ that was when I started becoming interested in Native American Indian History ~~ and needing something lighter and easier to read, I started with "Ride the Wind."

This is such a great beginning introduction to reading about the Comanches ~~ even though the book is a novel ~~ it is based on what few known historical facts on Cynthia Parker and the man who she calls husband ~~ Wanderer, one of the last great Comanche chiefs. Robson writes with passion the story of a white girl kidnapped by the Indians in her youth ~~ and how she transformed her ways to those of the tribe. It is a heart-warming story, one that will haunt you for the rest of your life. It also shows a softer side to the Indians that you normally won't see ~~ they're not the savages as people make them to be. I'm not saying that they're not fierce warriors ~~ they are and do practice warfare with a savergy that is different from what historians call "civilised society." But Robson shows the fierce loyalty the Comanche have for their tribe and one another ~~ and their way of life.

Pick this book up. I guarantee that you won't walk away from it without being haunted by the stories that Cynthia and her friends share with you. It is an eye-opener into the way of life then. And it is a heart-breaking story as well. Try it and see. I don't think you'll regret it.

I first came across this book in my school library. It was so good that I had several late fees on it because I wouldn't turn it in until I received mine from amazon!! I have always been fascinated with Native Americans and have been to several Reservations. The best thing about this book, is it tells a wonderful (TRUE!!) history of fascinating people, the Commanches. Once you've read this book, it will stay with you forever. It makes you wish you were Cynthia Ann! Lucia describes everyone and everything in such detail. It tells of the Commanche ways. You learn a lot about their culture and religion. It has a surprising end too. It will make you laugh and cry, it will make you happy and sad. This is a must read for Indian lovers. You will fall in love with the book, just like I did.

I first found this paperback in a used bookstore 15 years ago. I couldn't put it down - too enjoyable! Since that time, the paperback has come apart at the seams (I lost track of the number of times I've read it), so I tried to find a hardback. Since it was out of print, I had to wait for Amazon.com. I still love this book and its characters! Absolutely timeless!

I've never been a western fan. I'll say that right up front because that said, I buy this book every chance I get. My copies keep vanishing as I loan them out and new readers fall in love with Huffaker's work. This, and One Time I Saw Morning Coming Home - these two books are full of warmth, compassion, passion and the rich delight that comes with a book that's just a wonderful read. Huffaker deserves a much wider readership and it's a shame his books aren't better known. Give this one a chance if you see it - and then share it with someone who's never had the luck!

A friend insisted I put aside my latest novel to read The Cowboy and the Cossack. That was the last we saw of each other until I finished the book. My oh my....what a story. From page one I was there....with all those cowboys, all them Cossacks, and all those rambling, rambuncous cattle. A must read for all generations. Who is Clair Huffaker? I am trying to find everything else written, all out of print....

I didn't know what to expect when I picked up a copy of GHOST WARRIOR for I had never read any of Lucia Robson's novels. I have a love for Native American and western history, so I thought it was worth a try. I finished the book about a week later, and was simply amazed at what I had read. I thought the book was very well written and was a compelling story that grabbed my attention at the very beginning and has held it ever since.

Ms. Robson's book made a significant impression on me. It inspired me to spend the next several months reading Apache Indian history. I didn't realize how good the book was until I really understood how much research the author had done to be able to tell this story with so much passion, detailed knowledge and competence. The book followed the history of the Apache Indian wars accurately, but it also gave me insight into what her Native American, and American characters must have been like beyond the historical facts. I had to keep reminding myself that her book was a novel, and by definition novels distort history. But I found her depiction of history was in many cases more accurate than some of the histories I have read, and it was exciting, sad, outrageous, fun, and gives a profile in American history that deserves wide attention.

Ms. Robson tells a complex tale that centered around Lozen, an Apache warrior and Shaman of the Chiricahua Apache band. The complexity of the story increases as her novel follows Lozen's long life as a warrior. The Apaches struggled for survival against western expansion pre and post civil war, against the ever present Mexican army, other hostile indians, the invading gold rush and it's inherent lawlessness and the best troops the US Army could deliver.

Lozen, the main character, was one of the only Apache warriors, male or female, to fight with all of the great Apache Chiefs over a 30 year period right up to their final battles. Their mission was survival of their race.

GHOST WARRIOR is an ambitious work, and I not only recommend it to family and friends, I rave about it. I've noticed that Ms Robson's best selling work makes noticeable improvements with each new book. I'm looking forward to her next book; it can't come out soon enough!

I highly recommend Lucia St. Clair Robsons' book "Ghost Warriors". The book not only transports you back to the western historical terrain and people of the late 1800s but Robson gives you a fascinating insight of the Apache Indian Tribe and the white men through her characters of Lozen and Rafe. When reading this book, the people are so real you feel their joy and their pain. It is almost impossible to quit reading this book until the very last page.
"Ghost Warriors" is one of her best reads and it's like a good cup of coffee - you savor every drop and when it's gone you wish for more!
Fans of James Michener, John Jakes and the late Louis L'Amour should add Robson to their must read list. I have!

In answer to the objection to using the name Dineh to describe the Apaches when the word itself is Navajo: The Navajo and Apache both speak the Athapascan language. They share vocabulary and many cultural traits such as the ceremony for girls at puberty. James L. Haley, in his book APACHES: A History and Culture Portrait, says they called themselves Tin-eh-ah, The People. They also referred to themselves Indeh and Indah, and Indah is the more often used term.
Also, Apaches do talk to white people about Lozen. One talked to me about her at great length and with no prompting. The old ones, like James Kaywaykla, mention her in their memoirs, and of course she's written about in Apache Mothers and Daughters by Ruth McDonald Boyer and Narcissus Duffy Gayton, a descendent of Lozen's niece.

This book provides lots of good information on healing pain. It's written in an accessible, easy-to-read style for people who don't know anything about muscles, yet the information is not simplistic, and is useful even for professionals who want to learn about trigger points. This book is great for people who have chronic pain and are motivated to help themselves. Trigger point massage really does a lot more good than anything doctors have to offer -- most doctors are not trained to effectively help people with muscular pain. And it's cheaper and more effective to do it yourself than pay to see a massage therapist, because you'd need to go every day for most seriously chronic problems. I do have a few complaints: There are lots of illustrations, but they don't always show all the areas of referred pain. There are handy lists arranged by body part, but it would be even more helpful to have a more detailed reference guide where you could look up specific symptoms. I also think Davies is a little too enthusiastic, claiming trigger points are the cause of most pain. He is also unfairly disparaging of massage therapists. Any properly trained massage therapist knows it's not always the spot where it hurts that's causing the problem, and if you know how all the muscles work together to act on a joint, and a little about nerve pathways, you're going to address most of the areas that are likely to have trigger points. Still, he has a valid point in that consumers need to ask whether a massage therapist specializes in relaxation massage or knows how to treat specific pain and injuries.

I rate this book right up there with Devin Starlanyl's books. I have had Fibromyalgia and Myofascial Pain most of my adult life and have been disabled the past 5 years. This book by Mr. Davies has just helped me end 2 months of an excruiating flare of muscle pain. I showed it to my Pain Management physician, who is ordering one for his office and will advise his other patients similarly effected to purchase one if possible. When all the doctors don't know what else to tell you about relieving your body/muscle pain, this book is the answer. It is easily understood by medical professionals and laypeople alike. It's deascription of the muscles and the mechanism involved in the creation of unexplained boby pain is outstanding. Anyone, by themself or with another person, will find the diagrams showing the location of trigger points in muscles and how to achieve relief easy to learn. Mr. Davies explanation of massage therapy for trigger point release has made this book one of the best and most valued tools for self-treatment of body pain.

I was in so much pain that I couldn't sleep at night. I was diagnosed with arthritis (hip, back, etc), but I was not satisfied that this explained my pain. Then I found Davies' book and started to work on trigger points with the rubber ball he recommends. It didn't solve all my problems, but it reduced my pain to the point where I could sleep without pills (and demonstrated that my pain was at least partly muscular)--and all for the cost of a ... little ball! And now (several other therapies later), I still keep the book and the rubber ball by my bed, and still follow its directions to massage key areas on a daily basis.

This book is terrific--the best "self-help" book I've seen. It is clearly written, well organized, mostly well illustrated, and contains a wealth of really useful detail. It is definitely not one of those "glossy" books--all photos and no useful information. The author really does take the approach of someone who was himself helped by this therapy and who wants to make it as clear and accessible to his readers as possible. Very highly recommended.

I read this book back when I was in high school. I never dabbled in drugs but I had friends who did. I was curious about ouija boards, but I am very religious so I was a bit uncomfortable with the idea. After reading this book I decided never to touch a ouija board again. It also reminded me why I did not use drugs. I did, however, listen to heavy metal music. I realized that some people do not know how to differentiate between music and reality. Especially those who are drugged out and into satan. Basically, my mother freaked out when she saw the name of the book. I explained to her that if anything this book made me even more religious and scared me away from drugs even more than before. It is frightening to think that these crimes happen far too often. It definitely made me open my eyes to reality.

I was walking through a store and looked up and saw a book title I knew would drive my parents teachers and friends running to the shrinks. I had never heard of Ricky Kasso or Nothport Long Island. It is the easiest book to read since See Jane jump Spot. The story pulls you in from the first page. Before your realize it you're sucked into the life of a troubled kid whose life takes an unexpected turn and shows how easily a kid can go wrong. I was 16 when I first read it. I've gad 6 copies of the book 5 of which vanished. The last I found hidden in the stacks at the library. If nothing else it should be part of some required reading list for would be parents. The book changed my life. Even the most heartless can't put the book down without Rcky, Jimmy or Gary sticking with them for years.

I first read this book a few years ago, accidentally discovering it in a bookstore, and recognized the name Ricky Kasso from the media. As you read this book, I don't see how anyone with a heart could not help but feel a little sorry for Ricky; this was a CHILD, and we as a society failed him, failed him so wrongly he became entangled in drugs, crime, devil worship, and eventually murder. Unfortunately, Gary Lawvers just happened to cross him at the wrong time and paid the ultimate price.Ricky was not cold-blooded, but a scared teenager with a mind clouded by drugs - his suicide proved that. This book is a perfect example of this country's need to have parents who are willing to be there for their kids. I would never put my child out on the street, the way the Kasso's did. We can't let more and more teens reach the point that Ricky, and sadly, many others, have reached.

I saw this book in a bookstore in Atlanta, Ga over 17 years ago in it's first edition. While I had not been impressed with other "How to 'do' psychic stuff" books, and was also under considerable parental pressure not to acquire more (being a young and "impressionable" teen at the time), a cursory read of the text showed what appeared to be quite simple instructions and a fascinating breadth of supposed psychic abilities covered. So, impressed, I snuck up to the counter when my Mom wasnt looking and bought it.

As other reviewers have noted, the most amazing fact about this book is that you start seeing results from the moment you put its techniques into practice. You will have some degree of success with everything mentioned in the book, from seeing auras to table tipping. There will be points during practice of the excercises when you make a breakthrough, and your hair will literally stand on end.

As one of the most easily accessible texts on psychic abilities I have ever encountered, it is indeed a shame that this text has gone out of print. Having said this, a more widespread reading of the text and practice of the excercises would no doubt make many of the "extraordinary" abilities listed in the book become downright commonplace. The author, and the book, are really that good!

a few different American psychic societies and has a way of coming across which is so down to earth and easy to approach that your level of education doesn't matter. I think thats great.

I also think its amazing the number of books on Amazon and [another store] on this subject that don't get as nearly as many reviews from folks telling you how THEY got specific results from the use of this little book.

I've read many of St. Clair's books and was inspired to create a FREE MSN (microsoft network) community dedicated to him and his books. There are many books out there more sophisticated and prestigious but few that will get you the RESULTS you want as quick or as successfully. That's a rare talent. Thanks David!!

I have always suspected a tad of psychic ability in my bloodlines. After reading this book i can attest to the fact that WE ALL DO! It is a known fact that we use only 10% OF OUR BRAIN! This book gives much insight on how we can use the other 90% to benefit our physical lives as well as our spiritual lives. It is not magic and it is not spells. It is nature! EVERYONE HAS THE POWER and this book shows you step by step, precisely how to use it. This is the first piece of literature i have bothered to read on the subject and after getting "hooked" i can find no other which can compare to the genuis of Mr. St. Clair. For the Doubting Thomases of psychic phenomena, this book is a MUST!

I live about six miles from Independence Indiana, where the story begins. My wife (departed) grew up in a town just south of Watseka and was very familiar with the story of Mary Roff. She gave me the book in 1982. I believe the story to be true.

I grew up in Watseka. Only 3 blocks from the Roth House. My house was putt on the site of the Durst House and Mrs. Durst Haunted the land and my home. I have heard stories about this book and finally got it yesterday. I read it form cover to cover in one day and learned alot. I enjoyed the book. It was great. I learned that Mary and Rancy were torcharded soles and very misunderstood. I will keep this book and would recomend it anyone. It was a well written interesting part of our history. It might even change the way you look at Death.

I lived in watseka for many years.The houses in the book are haunted by the people in the book.I know first hand about the hauntings. The house that I lived in was build on the foundation of the house that was burned in the book. I also knew the people who lived in the other two houses and been in the other two houses in the book. All the houses are still haunted to this day. The house I lived in you could hear glass braking. Door knobs would move and nobody was there. People going up and down the stairs. Many,many other things. In one of the other houses doors open and close. Everyone could be out back and you could come to the front door and knock and someone would tell you to come in. But no one would be in the house. So when you read this book remeber it is true. I lived in that town and my family and I know first hand how true this book is..
