Professor Drake's Black Folk Here and There is essential reading for anyone concerned with the history and legacy of slavery and race in the contemporary world. This book provides the best review of the specialized literature on race and slavery, making available a great deal of knowledge heretofore confined to university libraries. St. Clair Drake was one of the deans of Black Studies as well as American Sociology, and he applied that rare background to an analysis and evaluation of modern theories of race and racism. His main targets are the theory of black inferiority and the theory of universal black contemptability. Did every civilization develop racism against "blacks"? In order to challenge that idea presented by some psychologists and historians, including the prize winning Professor Carl Degler, Drake reviews the history of Egypt, Ethiopia, Europe and Christianity in the Middle Ages, slavery and Islam, and the rise of the Atlantic Slave Trade. And he finds that there was no universal contempt for blacks. The evaluation of blacks throughout the ages, depended on their status in various civilizations. The high point of black social and cultural status was in ancient Egypt and Ethiopia as well as during the Middle Ages as revealed in such folklore as Prester John and the Black Madonna. However, with the emergence of the Atlantic slave trade as the modern world took shape, Black Africans took on a distinct ly degraded social and cultural status that was spread by modern communications throughout the world. In terms of encyclopedic knowledge on this subject and hard hitting analysis, Drake's study is unrivaled! As a professor of history, I use it as the best introduction to the global problems of race and racism left behind by modern slavery and the Atlantic slave trade. No one knew this subject or wrote with the scope as did Professor Drake. Thus, this text is essential reading for teachers and students.

Black Metropolis: A Study of Negro Life in a Northern City
Published in Paperback by Harcourt (1970)
Amazon base price: $2.85
Average review score:

Black Metropolis is perhaps the founding document of African-American studies, a classic work of sociology that still resonates today. It is a paradigmatic expression of the Chicago School of sociology, however, a school that today stands in some disrepute, at least in some circles. Indirectly, it was the target of James Baldwin's famous attack on Richard Wright in his essay, Everybody's Protest Novel. The claim of the criticism has been that the Chicago School, due to its insistance upon using a "scientific approach", merely reproduces the very terms under which African-Americans have been oppressed--a claim that has proceeded under the warrant of European intellectuals such as Theodor Adorno. Still, Black Metropolis is a landmark study, and, unfortunately, many if not most of its observations and conclusions remain true today, and in fact it could be argued that conditions in the Black Belt of Chicago have gotten worse, not better, since 1945, the year of Black Metropolis' publication--which lends a certain credence to the criticisms mentioned above, though perhaps it should be qualified by saying that they are not so much criticisms of the Chicago School as they are criticisms of American society. Since then, as we know, we have witnessed a great shift in American public opinion away from what some consider to be the excesses of those days; so much so, in fact, that the work of Black Metropolis may again be regarded as a profoundly useful book. Embodying American liberalism as it does--which counted as a grave sin thirty years ago--Black Metropolis may possibly be due for a fresh look.

As a youth pastor for 11 years, I have been searching for abook to give to my volunteer youth leaders that would disciple andtrain them for strategic youth ministry, and this is it! Barry St. Clair does a fantastic job of breaking down youth ministry in such a way that a volunteer can fully understand his role as a youth leader while keeping his personal focus of Christ as Lord. As a youth pastor, I'm constantly dealing with that critical issue of time - time for myself and helping youth leaders balance the amount of time they give to serving in our student ministry while still taking care of important needs such as family and personal time. This book helps volunteers address this critical issue of time with practical application included. One other great piece to this book is that it teaches leaders how to lead. Barry St. Clair uses the biblical four-step approach that Jesus used in leading His disciples: 1) Leader does the work and the potential leader is with him, 2) Leader does the work and the potential leader assists, 3) The potential leader does the work and the leader assists, 4) The potential leader does the work and the leader observes. I highly encourage any youth pastor to purchase this book, go through it, and then use it to help train adult leaders to carry out the work of the ministry.

I don't live on Cape Cod, nor have I ever been there - but this book was facinating. The author started by providing an interesting history of the ways that humans have created shelters at the beginning of the book. The rest of the book takes you through all the different architectural styles that can be found in Cape Cod, along with an idea of how and why they evolved. There are lots of great pictures and drawings to illustrate the main points. Overall a facinating, well researched and easy to read book.
