This book molded my life as a christian teenager.
I came to know the Lord Jesus Christ at the age of 12. This was the first Christian Book that I read. It really made a great and lasting impression on my life and drew me into the life of Christ. So much so, that I am buying it to read it to my 6 year old daughter.

This book touched me in a way that no other book has
The author tells the story in such a way that you feel as though your right beside the little boy seeing all that he is seeing & feeling all that he is feeling. And when he comes face to face with Jesus after they have nailed His feet & hands to the cross you will ask yourself how could He love us so much & willing suffer all that He suffered for someone as undeserving as I.This is a book that will make you feel the love of God!

Wavelets and Multiscale Signal Processing (Applied Mathematics and Mathematical Computation)
Published in Hardcover by CRC Press (1995)
Authors: Albert Cohen and Ryan
Amazon base price: $75.95
Average review score:

The source!
This book is the original source for reading about the use of numerical methods from signal processing in wavelet constructions, with an eye to applications. Mathematically, it is especially elegant, and its author speaks the language of applied math, and numerical analysis. By now, it has in fact become a central area in numerical analysis. The book is actually an updated translation[by Robert D. Ryan] of the French version [RMA, v 25, by Albert Cohen in the Masson book series], and I can recommend both. I can also recommend the several other wonderful translations, from French to English, of wavelet books by R.D. Ryan, for example his translation of French language wavelet books by Yves Meyer et.al. In the years since Cohen's book, we have seen a handful of books stressing the interface of
signal processing and wavelets which are very suitable for classroom use. I have taught from some of them, but always find pearles in Cohen's original book when I take it down from my

shelf, or when I need to remind myself of the elegance of the presentation from the original source.

this book is a one of the greatest book in wavelets..i enjoy
very interesting and efficient book on wavelets

The Words of Albert Schweitzer
Published in Paperback by Newmarket Press (1902)
Author: Norman Cousins

Albert Schweitzer - Spiritual Man of the Century
Although I am a scientist and I appreciate Einstein being chosen as Man of the Century, I feel that Albert Schweitzer would have been a more compelling choice. It is true that Einstein represents the science and technology that is taking us at a breathless pace into the new millenium. But just where is is taking us?

Schweitzer's scholarship in medicine, music, and religion could easily have led him to a highly successful academic career at a university. But he did not choose this path. Rather, he put his knowledge of medicine to use at a primitive level by serving natives in a remote part of Africa. It was a courageous, soulworthy decision. For that reason it is worth learning everything we can about this man whose mind was capable of such unique comprehension and action.

I am very grateful that Norman Cousins put his editorial skills to use in selecting words of Albert Schweitzer to pass on to us. Cousins is correct in the Introduction when he says "The greatness of Schweitzer rests not just on what he has done but on what other have done because of him."

The words in the text are classified under six headings: Knowledge and Discovery, Reverence for Life, Faith, The Life of the Soul, The Musician as Artist, and Civilization and Peace. Also, an excerpt is given from Schweitzer's 1952 Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech.

The quotations range from humorous to subline; from "An organ is like a cow; one does not look at its horns so much as at its milk," to "The history of our time is characterized by a lack of reason which has no parallel in the past." It is a fearsome accusation for a generation that prides itself on the good job it has done in harnessing reason to science. Schweitzer further reflects that "we have sought to live and to carry on with a civilization which has no ethical principle behind it."

With the example of Schweitzer's life of dedication and service we can perhaps see a glimmering of the ethical principle that is missing in today's world. By living a life of sacrifice and service, his soul grows steadfastly without bound.

Wonderful introduction to the great humanitarian.
As printed in the Editor's Note, I first suggested the ides of this book to the publisher and corresponded with Norman Cousins. In l995 I wrote a multimedia musical dramatization called the "Words of Albert Schweitzer and the Music of Bach>" This acclaimed production is available to churches and universities. It was prsented March l at Syracuse University, New York. Thurston Moore

An engrossing, overall view of the War of 1812
This book provides a fascinating look into the causes of the War of 1812, as well as life for those fighting. The living conditions onboard British warships is detailed, giving the reader an understanding of why British sailors were deserting; thus leading to British impressment of American sailors. All subjects in the book are given the same in-depth treatment with gripping first-person accounts of naval and land battles.

If that is the case...
If asked to provide two bookends to a theology/philosophy library, my choices would be David Tracy's Blessed Rage for Order and this book, The Abuse of Casuistry. The former provides contemporaneous structure and language to the general propositions of the subject, this book obtains practical meaning (meaningfulness)from the individual case. Jonsen/Toulmin is a tour de force in a subject so laden with cliches (how many modern reader have read the Provincial Letters?) and "Enlightenment" baggage (this is the one we kept out of assorted discarded myths of the universal) that just reading it constitutes an act of intellectual rebellion. Henceforth, we are all casuists (not that we ever stopped being casuists, as the well developed narrative and examples point out)and informed at at...despite our pining for absolute platitudes..
