Albert, the Apple-eating Appaloosa: Dolch Horse Stories
Published in Paperback by Learning Abilities Books (2002)

delightful
This is a collection of short stories about a lovable horse, children, a child's teacher, and adults. All ages enjoy the book. It is illustrated by photos. It helps people who need help learning to read better, but mainly it is an interesting collection of short horse stories. I recommend it highly.

get all four books
This is the fourth book in a series of Dolch books by Betsy B. Lee. All four are great. THis one has a collection of short funny horse stories. I guess the only non-Dolch work in the whole book is probably Albert and appaloosa. Big words like appaloosa and palomino don't bother kids especially if they love horses. Well the names of the people aren't Dolch words but they are easy names like Sarah and Linda. This book uses a lot of Dolch words with ed and s on them. Kids need to recognize these forms of the wrds too. Lee's other Dolch books are A Funny Dolch Word Book #1 and #2 and #3. All of these have a few word search puzzles as well. None of the words are backward or upside down.
I really like that. All four books are great!

Halfway through review
So far I rate this book 5 stars. I am also writing a book on this topic, and one of the most compelling reasons I have encountered for the decriminalization of substances is the situation in Iran. There dealers of Heroin have been subjected to the death penalty, and the traffic is unabated. As mentioned in this book and other sources, the harsher the penalties, the greater the profits. In every society there are persons so desperate and lacking in education and opportunities that death itself is no deterrent to such profit. In our (US) society recently a former chief of police in Los Angeles said that even casual users should be shot. He did not include cigarette smokers or beer drinkers. Fanatics are not often troubled by attacks of logic.
Abraham Lincoln said Prohibition laws run contrary to the principles upon which the United States was founded. He is one of George W. Bush's heroes. Dubya seems not to have read his hero.

Intense,truthful,and well researched!!
Read this book!! In it lies the truth behind the legal-illegal substance/drug story and thier relative harms. You will be surprised. Offered are models for legalization that only a brain-washed fool would argue with. Open the book, read, then open the debate! Well written. Bravo!!

A classic
I recently picked up a copy of this book because of my interest in the work of Ellis. Apparently Abrams and Dengelegi are terrific researchers. They have added alot of clearly presented biological research to the work. Excellent.

Well researched book on the psychology of eating
Although not a "diet" book per se this is the best in that category. Rather than provide the right way to eat, it demonstrates through extensive research that body weight is the result of a complex interplay of biological and behavioral factors. The authors first seek to teach self-acceptance, then the rational-emotive/cognitive behavioral methods to maximize self-regulation. The case vignettes presented throughout the book both add to its entertainment value and its applicability

Asterix Forever: 6 Adventures in One Book! (The Adventures of Asterix and Obelix)

Contains Hard to find Asterix Gems
This collection is great because it has a variety of asterix books in it, and some of the best stories. If you are not searching via the internet, you would not likely find "When Obelix fell into the magic potion" or "Operation Getafix", in addition to the other great Asterix stories that it has. Another bonus - it offers you a good value of six books in hardcover (less than the regular price of one hardcover Asterix book.) I am a total asterix fan, and I have been reading the stories since I was a little kid. I highly recommend this series to anybody who likes comic books, very funny, clever jokes, many plays on words (a bard named cacophonix, a druid named getafix, as well as tons of other names, by Toutatis), and genuine fun. The stories are well-written and beautifully drawn.

Good collection
If you a fan of Asterix series{if you are not you are missing great fun} this is quite a treat. It ha asterix and the great divide, asterix& the magic carpet,Operation Getafix[not a regular strip cartoon],Asterix&the secret weapon,How Obelix fell into magic potion[again, not strip]and Asterix conquers America[new book minus the regular strip but old title Asterix & The Great Crossing was much better].So the new A & the secret weapon is hilarious as usual.

State of the art resource for helping professionals!
Battered Women and Their Families (2nd edition) is a book that every clinician should own. This book provides the expert in domestic violence, as well as social workers and other helping professionals working within a general private practice, a step by step treatment approach for victims of domestic violence. Background of the problem is discussed in section I detailing the scope of the problem, crisis intervention, and short-term treatment approaches. These first four chapters detail each step in the treatment process to assist clinicians to build treatment protocols: a first step in evaluating practice effectiveness.

Sections II and III illustrate the problems and interventions of children and adolescents from violent homes and battered women respectively. Treatments and solutions are outlined on the micro-mezzo-and-macro levels of practice with these populations. Section IV covers special populations (the elderly, substance abuse, & lesbians), and section V deals with cross-cultural issues, policies, and practices with battered women. Each of the chapters takes great care to cover current trends and treatment practices providing a magnificent state of the art resource for social workers and other helping professionals. This is the most practical book I have read on family violence intervention.

This book is a gem.
The second edition of Battered Women and Their Families is the only book of its kind. Each chapter in this collection is as compelling and well documented as the next. This volume is highly informative, especially regarding crisis intervention protocols. It should be on the shelf of every hospital and treatment center. Writers go into theoretical depth in arguing for an interdisciplinary approach to address client needs, for example, battered women with substance abuse problems or children who have abused and abusive parents. Graduate students of social work and counseling will find much relevant and useful information here.

Good for Kids
This is a good book for any classroom. It shares how children are affected by HIV - how they are still children, but with great weights. I have used it many times, not just for children, but as an awareness tool for adults.

Faces and Hearts, Not Merely Numbers
This collection of pictures, stories, and thoughts from children who have AIDS humanizes an inhuman experience. These children are the children in our lives, the same as all children. Their artworks and statements bring home the human aspects of this disease and help to remove the distance that fear and misunderstanding cause. I was first introduced to "Be a Friend "in a training session for teachers working with special populations. Since then I have given it as a gift to friends and coworkers and have used it extensively with my class of Youth in Custody students. It is a non-threatening approach to a subject about which they have many fears and misconceptions. Hearing the voices of children helps lower the barriers and open the dialogue which promotes learning and understanding. Similar in approach to " I Never Saw Another Butterfly " the stunning work by children of the Holcaust, this books makes the experience of AIDS very real and human. I recommend it highly to anyone who knows and loves a child.

The most exciting birthday celebration ever
Birthday Zoo is a joyful picture book by Deborah Lee Rose about the most exciting birthday celebration ever. A whimsical poem about fun activities suggested by various playful animal friends, and cheerful color illustrations by Lynn Munsinger make Birthday Zoo an upbeat, entertaining, and highly recommended picture book for beginning readers.

A ZOO-FULL OF GREETINGS
What do children enjoy more than a birthday party? Young folks find a visit to the zoo exciting. The combination of the two in "Birthday Zoo" is bound to bring smiles of delight.

Illustrated in engaging watercolors and presented in catchy rhyme, the story opens with a question, "'Hey, what's the big deal?'" noticed the seal." When it's discovered that the big deal is a birthday preparations begin.

"'What do we do?' asked the emu. 'Make everyone happy,' said the okapi." And that's precisely what this joyful narrative will do as balloons are blown up, party hats distributed, and refreshments served.

At the last, imagine being wished happy birthday by a whole zoo!

Tremendous Achievement
How many bibliographies are a pleasure to read? How many would you put on your "desert isle" reading list? Astonishingly, long-time crime writer Albert Borowitz has perpetrated a volume that fits both of these rare categories splendidly. An instant true-crime classic and a literate treat, "Blood and Ink" will inform and charm its readers for decades to come.
The bulk of Borowitz's volume is given over to 500+ annotated bibliographic entries, wherein he crisply describes and critiques true-crime classics from around the world (excepting only Africa). As is the case with his own true-crime studies ("The Thurtell-Hunt Murder Case," "The Woman Who Murdered Black Satin" et al.), Borowitz's scholarship is impeccable, his style beguiling and his critical judgment unfailing. Compounding these delights are the author's introductory survey of world crime literature (a graduate course itself for the criminously inclined, plus lesser but worthy contributions by no less than Jacques Barzun and Jonathon Goodman.

A Tremendous Achievement
How many reference book can be read for pleasure? How many bibliographies would you include in your "desert island" list of indispensable titles? Astonishingly, Cleveland true-crime scholar/enthusiast Albert Borowitz has produced a magisteral volume that splendidly qualifies in both categories.
True crime aficionados take note: this is a book you cannot live without. In almost five hundred pages of crisply perceptive text Borowitz provides a lovingly annotated list of the world's true-crime literature. And, while the bulk of his text is taken up with English language items, the multilingual Borowitz also surveys works from around the world, excepting only Africa.
Erudite, witty and flecked with a dry humor,Borowitz's 654 choice entries will henceforce comprise every crime connoisseur's library or bibliographic lust list. Not the least of the delights herein is Borowitz's 40-page introductory survey of true-crime literature, which is as good a pocket-history of the genre as you will find. It is an additional measure of Borowitz's standing in his field that "Blood and Ink" also boasts prefatory contributions by both Jacques Barzun and Jonathan Goodman. As Sam Spade himself might say, "A toast to Albert Borowitz--and success to crime!"
