Beautiful, historical and perfect for kids
Like all the Diane Stanley books that we have my children and I loved this one. The illustrations are colorful and very fitting for the time. I have always been interested in history and have searched for books that my girls can relate to. The story of Queen Elizabeth is something all children should be familiar with. I think Ms. Stanley has a wonderful way of making history interesting for young readers.

Enchanting Start to a Lifetime Love of History
I first read this book when I was in third grade and I must have checked it out from the library 100 more times. I was fascinated by the beautiful illustrations and by the true story of Elizabeth I. It really got me into history. Now I read 800+ page books about Tudor history and I can't help but think back to the days when i used to recreate the illusrations using my own crayons and muse over every sentence in the book. Starts a lifetime love of history, and for me, an obession with the Tudors. The illustrations are perfect and the content isn't too dumbed down, but it isn't too hard. Recommended for any child who ever wanted to be a princess or ever showed any interest in history.

Literally changed my life
When I was seven years old my mother gave me this book for Christmas. That was nearly nine years ago and I've since become an Elizabethan "buff" I read everything on her I can get my hands on. This is a wonderful book for any kid who has ever shown an intrest in history or being a queen or a king. Superbly adapted for the younger set this well written and engagingly illuatrated book on Elizabeth I's life is historically acurate. And for me anyway what looks like a life long fascination.

The best little book I have ever read
This book was funny and moving. It made me cry. I loved it so much. Anyone and everyone should buy this book. It completely disproves that you have to be famous to write a great book.

one night
I came home tired and discussed with work, people, life. I saw a copy of the book on the table and picked it up out of boredom. After the secound chapter I couldn't put it down. I stayed up all night and read. This book has given me knew perspective on live. I cried for a half hour after I finished and now I want to share it with everyone I know,.And the scholarship fund what a fabulous idea! You won't be sorry if you purchase this book.

Heart to Heart Worlds Apart
I read this book when it first came out and was so impressed that I bought several others to share with my friends and family.

This book is easy to read and is so touching. It's a book that everyone should pick up. It taught me so much about how to love others, no matter what race, creed or color. What an awesome example this author is to everyone in the world. If everyone could feel the same way as she does, there would be peace throughout the land.

I'm still buying more books to help share her message and I hope that everyone else will too. It would be awesome to help some of these less fortunate people be able to get a college education. Don't miss this book!

The original "gardening for dummies" book
This is absolutely the ultimate gardening book for the amateur gardener. It's comprehensive, concise and couldn't be easier to use. I'm very disappointed it is out of print. I wanted to give my daughter a copy, but I don't want to let go of my own, which I have had since the 60s. Any hope of getting it back in print?

GREAT little book! Bring it back to print!
I've owned this book for many years and refer to it often. As the other reviews say, it very rarely lets me down. The information on each plant is listed alphabeticaly, and together with the index you can easily find plants by common and/or more formal names. The entries are usually only a few paragrahs with just the basics on light needs, moisture, soil, etc. Often that is exactly what you need. Find your copy before it is too late!

Helpful plant guide
This is the best basic garden how-to book I have ever seen. It contains info on practically every plant I have ever tried to look up. Although there is not a lot of detail about any one plant, it is an excellent source of starter information. It is too bad that the book is out of print.

The Hysterectomy Hoax
Published in Paperback by Stanley West, M.D. (01 October, 2000)
Author: Dr. Stanley West
Amazon base price: $14.95

Excellent
The explanations are clear, extremely helpful to anyone facing the possibility of this kind of surgery. A good reference and recommended reading for all women.

Excellent women's resource. Could save lives!
This book details women's reproductive system and offers easy to understand reproductive surgery. It is excellent as is Dr. VG Hufnagel's NO MORE HYSTERECTOMIES published in l989, five years prior to this one. BOTH should be on every woman's bookshelf. Both expose the unjustified medical practices women are constantly being subjected to. Intelligent, questioning women everywhere need these tools in order to demand the care they require if they are to remain healthy. If 51% of the world's population is female, someone better catch on or there're going to be massive legal problems ahead for the medical and insurance world.

a must-read for anyone facing hysterectomy
This book is designed to help a woman ask the right questions, the most important of which is "What are my alternatives to hysterectomy?" No doubt having a female ghost writer, recognized on the front cover as one would expect from a sensitive person such as West appears to be, helped make this a clear and interesting read for the women to whom it is targeted. Everything one would want to know is included--that is, everything that is available to know. West is not vague in discussing areas of ignorance for the medical community. From the workings of the female organs to the myriad of ills that may befall them to the treatments that are available, everything is presented. At the end of each chapter discussing specific dis-eases of the female organs, West has included a list of specific questions to ask a prospective surgeon. To aid the woman who fears questioning the big daddy in a white coat, West reviews research on doctor-patient communication and gives soun! d advice on communicating effectively and fairly and expecting the same fair treatment from the physician. Among the many books on the market today, I would place this first for the woman weighing her options when hysterectomy has been advised or considered.

Want to turn your life around for God? Read this book!
Are you struggling in your faith? Are you having trouble listening to God's voice? Did you know that there are several ways for God to communicate with you? Did you know that most of the time we hear two voices (Satan and God)? Want to know how to tell them apart and how to ultimately listen to God? Then you should check out Charles Stanley's book Listening to God. Two years ago I received this book as a gift and I just put it on the shelf. When I finally read the book I realized that if I would have read it the first time I would not have been faced with the issues that I am struggling with today.

In this book Charles Stanley not only teaches the reader how to listen to God, but he also tells the reader how to take that new knowledge and apply it in real life situations. He uses examples and stories from his own life, which helps the reader relate to the new concepts and issues. Each point is backed with scripture and is followed by questions that will make the reader take a closer look at his or her walk with God.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is stumbling in their walk with God or anyone who is trying to strengthen their relationship with the Lord. This book, although it is apart of a Bible Study series, does not necessarily have to be read in the correct order. Just pick it up, read it and don't give up because the Lord will use it to show you the way!

LOVED THIS BOOK!
I really enjoyed reading this book and thought it was excellent. Not only did it focus on the "why do I feel this way" aspects of emotions, but it also offered great suggestions on how to deal with our emotions. The book focuses on emotions in general, but then gradually confronts specific emotions such as anger, fear, anxiety in later chapters. It gives great examples on what to do when you feel a certain emotion and how to deal with it. What I liked even more is that the text was backed up with great biblical verses and it also made you think. I've already started putting the book to use and I can already see a change in the way I think and react to my emotions! The only problem with this book is I wish it were longer! :) Highly recommended!

"God Has A Purpose..."
'God Has A Purpose For Everything That Happens To You', is the Introduction to this book that, along with 'Another', may in fact change your life forever. Charles Stanley has been blessed with a powerful Gift from God to teach His Holy Word...that is equaled by "very" few. His 'In Touch' Ministry is indeed IN TOUCH with the Holy Spirit God Himself (Now find out more...).

Diane Stanley does it again!
A beautiful book! Diane Stanley carefully traces the life of Joan from her humble beginnings to her tragic end. The book even comes with a pronunciation guide to help those of us who haven't been to France. Although the language is at 8+ year old range, my 5 year old daughter loves it anyway!

Wonderful for kids
Not only was this an accurate portrayal of Joan of Arc's story, it was wonderfully written and illustrated. I would recommend it for anyone who is starting out in learning of the saint. It is educational and enjoyable for a child.

A role model for girls
This is a beautiful book that I purchased for a seven year old girl. I am a medievalist and the depictions in this book of the clothing, etc. are true to fact. The next copy I buy will be for myself as I collect good children's books on medieval times. Every year I publish of list of children's book on this time period that I recommend in our group's newsletter and this book is high on the list.

Lesser Evil
Published in Paperback by Pathfinder Press (1997)
Authors: Jack Barnes, George Breitman, and Stanley Aronowitz
Amazon base price: $10.95

A Most Remarkable Book
What strategy is needed to advance the cause of the working class and progressive people? Since Franklin D. Roosevelt in the 1930s, many labor, Black, and other progressive movements have supported the "lesser evil" -- usually the Democratic party candidate. Debated here is whether working people should dump this course and seek instead to replace the system which is alternatively administered by "lesser evil" Democrats and "greater evil" Republicans. Read the book and consider the consequences of "coalitionism" vs. independent working class political action.

What Kind of party do we need
Eugene V. Debs the socialist revolutionist was fond of saving, "it is better to vote for what you want and not get it, than to vote for what you don't want and get it." Malcolm X was fond of simply pointing out that at every key point in the history of Black people, the Democratic party "has sold us out." This book explains why real revolutionists are trying to chart a course of indepedence for workers, farmers, and the oppressed from the twin parties of capitalism, the Demnocrats and the Republicans.

Can the Republicans and the Democrats help us. Or do we need some new kind of party like the Green party, whichis a more liberal or more progressive party but still built on the model of the Democrats and the Republicans.
The responses that leaders of the Socialist Workers Party give here to people who believe that working people can work in the Democratic party or build other capitalist political parties answer these questions. They point out that the fundamental problem in this society is not liberal ideas or non liberal ideas, but the existence of a capitalist class, the big corporate leaders, and a capitalist system. They explain that politics is a question of taking power out the hands of those people and that system.

A system is a system
This book chronicles a series of debates between supporters of the Democratic and Republican parties and leaders of the Socialist Workers party who believe that working class people, Blacks, Chicanos, Puerto Ricans, women, and all who fight for change need to break from the Republican and Democratic parties and the wanna be capitalist parties like the Greens to form a working class political party, a labor party, a party that can fight for power to be placed in the hands of workers and farmers in this country and the world. Its simple, a system is something that seeks to preserve itself. The SWPers demonstrate that Democratic party and other capitalist parties are part of the capitalism system and are not vehicles for liberation, but traps

The Hauerwas Reader
Published in Library Binding by Duke Univ Pr (Txt) (2001)
Authors: Stanley Hauerwas, Michael G. Cartwright, and John Berkman
Amazon base price: $74.95
Average review score:

A Wonderful Collection
If you want to understand Hauerwas' thought on the issues of the day, as well as his method for doing ethics, begin here. The selection of essays for this text allows you to see many facets of Hauerwas' writing. The opening essays attempt to show how Hauerwas goes about doing ethics. They explore the way narratives impact the living of life and what Christian discipleship looks like. The later essays explore particular social issues, such as war, capitalism, sex, and medicine. The introductions and conclusion by other authors help to understand some of Hauerwas' thought. The essays in this book range from complex to simple and straightforward. There is something here for everyone, though some of the essays might be a struggle for those who are unaquainted with Theology and Ethics. Be prepared to disagree with some of the things Hauerwas says. However, if you want a thought-provoking book that deals with the issues of the day, this is it.

Clear and thought provoking.
This is the collection of essays through which I was introduced to Stanley Hauerwas. I wish I had begun reading him sooner. Hauerwas' arguments are clear and to the point, and some of his comments are jarring; but then, we need to be shaken from our complacency. I like that fact that Hauerwas can combine what is sometimes an abrasive manner with humility. He truly seems concerned not only with whether we think through these problems, but also with whether we properly understand what the problems are that confront us as Christians. I recommend this book to anyone who is concerned with ethics and especially the manner in which Christians should respond to the issues of the day.

A valuable reference
Stanley Hauerwas is probably the most influential contemorary Christian ethicist. While prolific, Hauerwas can be frustratingly difficult to read, especially if one's goal is to get a sense for his overall "system." (He avoids this last word like the plague.) This anthology provides an excellent way to learn Hauerwas's approach to contemporary Christian ethics and his views on a range of topics.

Actually helpful..
I have read and browsed many a book on relationships to get through the typically rough first couple years of marriage. This is the first that actually offered sincere and truthful advice and inspiring thoughts. What I liked best is that Women are given as much of the blame as the guys are... This is very refreshing from the crap Ive read from Smalley.

A good read and some helpful things to consider.. Very intelligent reading.

Best marraige book I've ever read!
Not your typical book on marraige. This is an excellent book and I'm usually pretty sceptical about these types of books. If you're engaged, thinking about marraige, or in a marraige and experience difficulty, this is a MUST READ!! If every couple read this before they got married I think the divorce rate would be a whole lot lower!

This is a MUST READ!
Scott Stanley has paved the way for married couples to really understand what commitment in marriage is all about. He has taken the best from research and with his practical down-to-earth writing style inspires and motivates couples to reaffirm and deepen their heart commitment to each other. If more couples read this book and followed Dr. Stanley's excellent advice, divorce attorneys would be looking for another job. It is by far the best thing I have read on the subject of commitment!

Leadership in High-Performance Organizational Cultures
Published in Paperback by Greenwood House (30 March, 2002)
Author: Stanley D. Truskie
Amazon base price: $24.95
Average review score:

Leadership in High-Performance Organizational Cultures
I teach Organization Theory and Organizational Behavior. Teaching leadership has the challenge of finding a way to put the theories into practice. Dr. Truskie meets this challenge and offers a reasonable solution to this decision maker's need.

The Art and Science of Leadership
At various points throughout the book, Truskie cautions that there is no one "ideal" style, nor an infallible "model", nor any single combination of leadership traits, characteristics and behaviors which are most appropriate to all organizations in all phases of their development. He urges his reader to absorb and digest the contents of Leadership in High-Performance Organizational Cultures with care, of course, but also with some degree of critical detachment. Then, correlate his observations and suggestions with the specific circumstances of the reader's own organization.

Truskie suggests that "there is a direct link between leadership, organizational culture, and performance." According to his research and analysis, the most effective leader has an impact on "forming the culture of an organization, which further can have an enhancing effect of improving the level, ensuring the consistency, and sustaining the organization's continuing performance improvement." Truskie believes that many leaders are preoccupied with identifying and then manifesting an "ideal" style of leadership when, in fact, no such style exists. That is to say, even the most effective leaders have significant human imperfections; however, they are aware of these imperfections and make every effort to ensure that these imperfections do not have a negative impact on their respective organizations.

For this reader, one of the greatest benefits of Leadership in High-Performance Organizational Cultures is Truskie's explanation of the potential, beneficial implications of the L4 Strategy with specific relevance to creating and then sustaining a high-performance organizational culture. Leaders as well as those whom they lead must constantly monitor the balance of four aforementioned cultural patterns. Imbalances are inevitable. Although Truskie does not discuss it, he would probably agree that an early-warning system of some kind is highly desirable. The model he provides suggests all manner of ways by which to recognize and then respond effectively to symptoms of such imbalances. For the foreseeable future, change will be the only constant. Given that reality, Leadership in High-Performance Organizational Cultures can be of even greater value as all organizations (regardless of their size or nature) proceed into an otherwise uncertain future.

Dr. Truskie Hits the Mark
Dr. Truskie's thesis that an integrated and balanced organizational culture is a necessity for long-term managerial success is right on target. This book is not only a valuable education on building leadership qualities and enhanced organizations, it is encouraging to those of us who try to maintain an even keel in currents that want to pull the ship toward the rocks. I wish that I had been exposed to the L4 strategy earlier in my career. I would have yielded quicker and superior results in establishing an effective organization.
