Each of the five short stories in this book focuses on a single aspect of old age and, collectively, they illustrate the myriad of horrors that plague the elderly.

Though the general theme provides a common thread throughout, the stories themselves do not follow a predictable pattern; the author portrays a variety of situations, some alarmingly real and others perhaps more hypothetical in some future life.

The most eventful and touching tale is "City Life," which places the reader in the very epi-center of a city divided by growth and deterioration. I thought that the book was very good. I don't usually read stories about wars, but this really appealed to me. It was a collection of letters written by a young man fighting in World War 2 back home to his family. I thought that as a young man, he made very astute observations about the changes in the world around him and the consequences of the war on the people all around him. I couldn't put it down!

Edward Miller's "War Plan Orange" is a well researched and effectively written book on the United states Navy's plan of action against a naval threat from the Empire of Japan. He covers the plan from it's initial design, through it's many changes, and through the point where it was "taken off the self" and executed.
While the sneak attack by the Japanese at Pearl Harbor might have destroyed a large portion of the physical fleet. One thing they could not touch was this plan and through it's use as the foundation for the US response, the defeat of Japan was assured. Let's hope that we still make plans that prove this effective.

Author Edward Stanley Miller has expertly distilled the political and military conditions of each era of war planning for the Pacific Theater. Using a plethora of original references to illustrate contemporary reasons for each era of stratagy, Mr. Miller has done a yeoman's job. The text is logical (a difficult task to identify all of the ebbs and flows of the various planning bodies of the time)and informative. The supporting tables, charts and maps are helpful but could have been expanded. Additional maps of Midway, Corregidor and various other key locations would have enhanced the text. Considering the main thrust of this scholarly work however , any lack of illustrative aids is not a major handicap. This book serves as a benchmark for U.S. military and geopolitical stratagy in the greater Pacific area for the first half of the twentieth century.

Too often these days both fictional and "factual" scholarly and media representations of military personnel falls into two categories: buffoons or renegades. Edward S. Miller explodes the myth that the interwar military planners were a bunch of buffoons and the actual combatants who won the war against Japan a bunch of brilliant innovators. War Plan Orange reveals the careful, thoughtful debate and study that went into Pacific War Planning for 48 years. In the final analysis, about the only mistake the interwar planners actually made was to underestimate time and resources required (something that happens with every campaign). As to basic strategy, their work was sound. The campaigners of WW2--some of whom helped with interwar planning--did nothing innovative, they simply executed a good plan proven through much wargaming and study.

This book opens your eyes to the wonders of the world through picture books. It gives easy to deliver effective lessons to go along with them. If you are an elementary educator or an outdoor educator it should be in your library and worn with use.

Most books with titles like this are vaporware - promising a lot but delivering nothing. This one is real and should be read by everyone responsible for managing a library. I've read/skimmed it once and have begun a project to determine how often books on the Reference shelf are used. Spend the $55!

What good news! A baby is coming! Everyone is celebrating the expected birth, the birds, the bees, the animals, all of nature. As I read this book I kept thinking how wonderful it will be when the expected grandchildren will be able to understand that their grandma wrote a book to celebrate their coming.

This is one of the coolest books I have ever read. Being a hockey nut, I just ate these stories up like no tomorrow. You don't need to be a crazy fan like myself to enjoy the stories though. The Stanley Cup is definately the most well traveled hunk of silver around and its story is still being written. The Cup means so much more that just winning and this book illustrates just how important it is to people and just how uncontrollably happy they can become when they raise it over their heads. One of these days, when I get my day with the Stanley Cup, I hope to be featured in a book just like this.
In general, this book is a unique collection of fascinating stories that have been compiled for over one hundred years. No hockey fan should be without this and I highly recommend it too anyone who is looking for an easy going and enjoyable book.

If you are a fan of hockey, this is a must! I couldn't put it down. One story after another, after another. Next time you see the Cup, you'll think back to all of the hilarious things the Cup's been through. Five star, double thumbs up!

What a great way to pass time between playoff rounds. Mr Allen had done his research. I can't watch Bill Clement without laughing so hard from his recollection of the Flyers Victory parade. A touching story is also included about Rocket Richard and his famed input on the Cup lore. Also a surprising and VERY sentimental touch of Pat Verbeek's day with the Cup in 1999. It's nice to see guys like him with even more reverence for the Cup.

A fabulously original and interesting book. I strongly recommend you buy it. Great for both children and adults.

A very unique, well written and educational book for both children and adults. Not many authors explore the different creatures under the sea. Most people have not even heard of Wolf-eels and so this book opens the doors to a new world of undersea creatures. There is so much we do not know about the ocean. The fantastic thing about this book is it brings these facinating creatures to life for everyone.

Not only is this book very well written, but it also inlcudes beautiful, colorful illustrations done by Jacqueline Stanley herself!

This is a fabulous book. Buy a copy, you will not be disappointed!

I recently had the opportunity to read this book, and was very impressed with its originality and interesting content, both with regards to the written text and the beautifully vivid illustrations (all of which were done by the very talented Ms. Stanley). Not only is it a fun read for any child (or adult, for that matter), but also offers educational information on a sea creature not widely known or understood, with pictorials detailing the life cycle of the wolf eel, etc. In my opinion, any child would love to receive this book, and I intend to purchase a copy for all of the children I know. I look forward to seeing the further adventures of "Wolfie" detailed in the future, or perhaps the tale of another sea creature - whatever the subject, I am confident the author will again create an exciting adventure below the seas to delight the imagination of both young and old. You've done a wonderful job, Ms. Stanley!

A Time Apart by Diane Stanley was by far one of the worst books I have ever read. It about a girl named Ginny who goes to live with her dad in London because her mom, back in Houston is sick with cancer. Her dad is a part of this Iron Age project where a group of people came together and lived as they did in the Iron Age where there were small huts, clay pots and stone tools. Most of the book is about her every day life on the project grounds. It is interesting at first, but after describing every day in her life on the project, every day is exactly the same. I did not like this book because it was slow moving, and was a story that could have been told in 30 pages, instead of 272 pages.

I just finished A Time Apart and I loved it. It's about a girl named Ginny who is sent to live with her father in England while her mother recovers from cancer treatment. When she gets there, she finds out that she and her father will be living on a farm modeled after Iron Age villiages with no electricity, modern tools, or contact with the outside world. The book shows how she is slowly adapting to her new life and finding a different side to her father from the one she knew. I really enjoyed this book. I would recommend it kids/teens ages 11-14.

This book is truly fascinating. I recommend all you to somehow read this book. It truly a GREAT book. Listen to me. It is a good book. I won't tell you any details so that You as readers will find out. Oh I hope I can find another book like this one it was a great good book. I really loved it. Now Listen to me you might think I'm lieing. But think again. I not! So read this spectacular book. I liked it so much I bought instead of just reading it from the library. It is a truly fascinating book. PLEASE read it.
