Can you not be compelled by a visionary author who opens this edition of his book with a review of the first edition, written in 1987! The 20-page new introduction and review is one of the most fascinating parts of the book. In a fairly modest way, not self-serving, Davis shows how most of his ideas have come to pass. Some are in still in development, and a couple of previous case studies have since flopped eg Sears one-stop-shop. But overall I thought it was a remarkable performance, and a key source of credibility for the book and the author. How many other business writers have put themselves to this same public test - not many that I know of, with the exception of Peter Drucker.

In 1987 Davis introduced concepts such as competing on speed, and mass customization. Today we accept that time has become intrinsic to business logic, and mass customization is now developing its own mass following. In this new edition he sticks with the powerful thinking tool he proposed earlier, namely that time, space and mass are fundamental dimensions of business. It is through exploring the extremes of this framework that new services and business models have eventuated. Davis shows us how to use that rather esoteric framework to help re-think our business. And I think very successfully, although it seems hard to grasp at first glance.

For example, we all take for granted the shrinkage of mass - miniaturisation. The thesis is that all core products will shrink, and the intangible component must grow for a business to remain sustainable. So we must extend our minds to take on the challenge of defining the knowledge-value in a mortgage or a pair of socks. The redistribution of product "space" will dramatically alter industries such as health care and education. Witness the advent of on-line training programs for computer skills, which can now result in Microsoft certified staff. Employees do these programs at work while doing their current jobs. And Microsoft's Encarta Learning Centre is another redistribution of educational product space.

Of course there are other books that cover the same ground as above. But this one is the seminal work, from a fundamental mental model. It has stood the test of a decade and is still completely current. And it has more - "organisations run by marketplace economics", "the misconception of having internal customers", "the business is not the organisation", "successful strategy self-destructs" etc.

I must comment on the one glaring anomaly that stands out in reviewing progress over the ten years from the first edition. It is the lack of progress in developing and implementing new organisations, and new ways of working together. This lack of change is astounding to me in the context of the other change that is framed by the book. As Davis remarks in his new preface "the organisational precepts are yet to come". For that reason alone I would recommend this book to every business leader.

This is one of the best books on Hegel in English. Specifically, it's the best introduction to Hegel for readers who have a good general background in the history of philosophy, but who have yet to tackle Hegel in detail. It's been out of print for a long time, and it's great that it's readily available again.

This is another example of the bright and brilliant intelligence of the author. In this book Rosen brings the whole of the disagreements between the Moderns and the Ancients to bear on the analysis of Hegel. Reading Hegel as a modern, Rosen talks about how Hegel's engagement with the ancients, an engagement which is central to Hegel's thinking, is worked out in the dynamics of Hegel's political thinking. The drama of German thought, its scientism, its radicalisation of philosophical considerations in an effort to arrive at a system of thought, are played against the sober playfulness of ancient thought. The effect is elating, understandable and eminently digestible. Rosen is a god among men.

This children's book is a delight and should be shared with parent to child of any cultural background as it evolks the unique community of Japanese American truck farmers in the early years of the 20th century, as well as a father's sense of fun and adventure with his son.
I especially liked Terasaki's matter-of-fact descriptions of the Japanese American farm life as he tells his story, from the food that they eat and grow, to the subtle language and word usage that is uniquely Japanese American. But persons of any cultural background will appreciate the father's quest with his son to discover the 'ghosts' in Farmer Tanaka's field. Anyone who may have played hide and seek at night or flashlight tag as a child, will remember the sense of adventure and spookiness of playing in the dark. The father and sons search for the "ghost" brought that to mind to me. Except that this son had his father to explore, guide, protect and even laugh with him in this quest. Any father would do well to read this book with his young son.
Shijo's illustrations are a delight and make the story fun and alive.

Ghosts for Breakfast is perfect for Halloween, or any time of year! It has all the elements young children, and the young at heart, love: beautiful illustrations that support the clearly told story, humor, and gentle fright/suspense. A winner for first time author Stanley Todd Terasaki and illustrator Shelly Shinjo.

The previous reviewer hit most of the points, i shall say though, that the book features an excellent collection of poems representative of each author,some nice footnotes, brief bios of the authors ... and a great selection from Hoelderlin and Goethe. The German side by side is a wonderful aspect for any with some German. A book not to be left without. The perfect way of sampling some great German poets so as to find those to pursue further. Note: read Hoelderlin

I am so delighted by this book. The poetry is by authors such as Ludwig Tieck, Franz Clemens Brentano, Josef Von Eichendorf, Novalis, and more. These are some of the finest authors of that lush period known as "Romantic Literature" to have to have there works assembled here. Moreover, the translations are excellent, and the English and German is set side by side in a very practical-sized type, making it extremely comfortable to read and enjoy. I should mention that the book is a sturdy paper back, much better than average, so it's more durable when schlepping it around to and from campus. I would recommend this collection not only to students of German Romantic Literature, but also to those studying English Literature, as writers from both periods were very influenced by each other. This might make for some wonderfully interesting topics for papers your papers. I highly recommend this book for English students or students of German that are studying the Romantic Period.

A "mind-opening" experince! Many new insights will pop up as you read it. The author spent 23 years of full-time work to combine four Gospels into one complete and single narrative in chronological order, without repeting any single detail. Awesome work!! Johnston Cheney's approach to bringing each of the Gospel records into perspective with each other provide the leisure reader and serious student of the Life of Christ with a unique, tree-top view of the Savior's walk among men. Prior to reading this book, there were numerous questions in my mind concerning the records of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John - things that didn't quite mesh into the concise, understandable image of Christ that I wanted to see. Cheney's research and dedicated study into the records of His Savior's life have placed all of these perceived inconsistencies into perspective with one another, resulting in a coherent mosaic that yields an unparalled view of the Life of Christ. This book is a "must" if you want to understand Christ's life and purpose, but is also a great "read" for leisure time - a thriller, that will at times leave you speechless, will enrage you at the treatment of mankind toward each other and their Creator, will make you cry, make you laugh, and in the end, will change your life

In this work, Dr. Greenspan provides the reader with a general thesis on human development, from birth through mature adulthood. His arguments center on the role that emotions play in our mind's growth, from birth through death, and in so doing reveals the foundations of both our human fragility and greatness, on an individual and societal level. This is powerful, intoxicating stuff: it will resound in your heart what you've suspected all along, make clear what was hidden, and lay bare what makes us most human. As a layman unversed in the field of psychology, I found it absolutely riveting and exhilarating - and as a father of an 8 month daughter, it provided a sound framework on which to base my parenting - to see the forest through the trees and approach my role as a father with true confidence and newfound excitement.

Although this book has been favorably reviewed, I suspect reviewers did not grasp the truly profound nature of Greenspan's propositions. I wish this book had been available to as I was writing my own book on the nature of addiction. Addiction, dysfunction, mental disorders are the principal plagues of all societies. Classical psychoanalyis, behavior modification, cognitive psychology, and scores of therapeutic techniques continue to tinker with the essential human problem. But until we understand and accept the nature of our emotional life as Greenspan explains it, we can expect no meaningful changes. Back in 1962 Susanne Langer (Mind:An Essay on Human Feeling) wrote: "The thesis I hope to substantiate here is that the entire psychological field - including human emotion, responsible action, rationality, knowledge - is a vast and branching development of feeling." In 1944, Ernst Cassirer (An Essay on Man) was proposing that we should drop our description of man as the rational animal in favor of symbolic animal. Quantum physicists asserted that reality cannot be grasped by what we think it is but by how we experience it. Physicist Eric Jantsch (Design for Evolution) writes, "Rationality, as it turns out, begins to play a role only after the knowledge has been obtained viscerally." And Danah Zohar (The Quantum Self) says, "All definite answers - all passion, all reason - are classical structures. They arise at the point where the wave function of thought collapses, that is, after the moment of choice. Our logic does not make our choices." In depth psychology, psychiatrist Robert Jay Lifton (The Broken Connection) shifted the Freudian model from instinct and defense to death and the continuity of life, brilliantly illuminating the symbolic connections by which mankind thrives or perishes. And just this year we hear from science writer Tor Norretranders (The User Illusion)that the human organism is predominantly a non-conscious organism - consciousness processes about 16 to 40 bits of information per second, while the non-conscious levels process and discard about 11 million bits of information per second. Experiments prove that decisions are made a full half second before we become conscious of them. For me, all this culminates in Greenspan's beautifully written book. Hopefully, his work will will lead other researchers to pursue this essential line of thought. Schools are at last beginning to introduce youngsters to their feelings, but this movement must become universal and taught at the highest academic levels. It was a great book! I loved it! The storys are so good! Trust me this is a book you would love to read. All my friends have read it and they all love it!

Heartbreak and Roses is a non-fiction book based on ordinary teenagers'heartbreaking stories. Many teenagers speak out from their former experiences. Instead of dwelling on their hurt and pain they learn from thier former relationships, they grow form it and they move on. This book in many ways helped me beleive the truth! That it is not the end of the world when you loose your other half. Heartbreak and Roses is one of those books that stick with you for the rest of your life!!!

For people who love horses this book is a precious document carefully complied by the authors. It preserves a collection of photographs of workhorses from about 1890-the mid 1970s. The book is more than just a static display. The accompanying text makes the pictures into meaningful illustrations of life when humans and horses weere everyday partners. - KLE

These authors have made this a thoroughly enjoyable book for people who love horses, lovers of history, and those of us who drive horses. Their little touches really make this a personal book. They notice the little things, and point them out to the reader so you too can enjoy them. For example, the horse's mane being braided up but the wagon was muddy... I have been driving for over 20 years, and my friends include people with draft horses. We, as horse owners, really enjoyed the fact that the authors know what they are talking about. And they shared so much, like talking about the fire house team of horses that when the alarm rang.... Little tidbits they added about particular horses, owners, or pointing out something in particular about a certain harness made it so enjoyable to read. This is just plain good reading for just about anyone.

I have a friend who's a very nice guy, but I admit he's a little weird and very hard to figure out good birthday gifts for. I gave him this for his birthday recently and he loved it, which is perhaps not too surprising in retrospect, since his favorite movie is the Texas Chain-Saw Massacre.

This is an extremely useful guide to being your own butcher. If you follow the guidance carefully this book teaches you the basics of cutting meat from your own body. Perfect for the man who enjoys fava beans and a nice chianti.

The book shows you how important it is to really trust in God - how to understand God's purpose in one's life - and that situations we experience in our life can be a lasting benefit for us here on earth. One of the points that I discovered in the book was the ability to be a comforter. A comforter by definition of Charles Stanley is someome who has experienced and through that episode is able to offer true compassion and understanding by virtue of one's own identical experience. This book really gave me an opportunity to realise that all adversity is not necessarily 'bad', but infact a life building and beneficial experience. Therefore, one should rejoice during periods of adversity knowing God is in control and His master plan never fails!
