The Adventures of Stanley Kane has become a book that we've treasured as a family. I wish it were still in print--I would by a copy for each of my children. Wonderful images on the page and in the words!

When i was a little kid my mom read me this book all the time, and i'm 15 now and i still remember it..."What is a knock when a knock's not knocking"...

Giordan Bruno is still today a controversial philosopher. In this book he exposes his philosophical/cosmological ideas and, in doing so, he uses the new Copernican theory as the basis for a new, daring vision of the universe.
Anybody who would like to familiarize him/herself with the work of Bruno, or is interested in the development of Western ideas will find this book extremely challenging. However I would like to say a few words on the interpretation that the translators give of Bruno's ideas. The translators appear to follow completely an interpretation of Bruno based on the theory of the english scolar Frances Yates. According to this theory Bruno was an exponent of the (then popular) Hermetic movement.
It is imperative to underscore that Yates theory is not universally accepted. While it is known that Hermetic influences can be traced in Bruno, to reduce his whole cosmology and his understanding of Copernican theory to a "hieroglyphic" is misleading if not plainly wrong.
Bruno was not a scientist, but he was the first to intuitively realize the revolutionary consequences of Copernican theory (not only for science) and to bring that theory to its logical conclusions: an infinite universe with infinite earth-like worlds. This vision can not be reconciled with the world of the hermetic "Magus". The whole purpose of the hermetic Magus was to ascend the material world to the world of the perfect spheres. In Bruno's universe there is nothing to ascend to. The universe is composed of a thin air where an infinity of worlds and stars are suspended and move following universal (animistic) principles. The other worlds are corruptible as much as the earth and may be inhabited by earth-like people. The very base of the hermetic doctrine is missing. I would therefore encourage the interested reader not to stop the investigation of Bruno's ideas to the hermetic interpretation, but to also read different points of view (for example Yates interpretation of Bruno's use of images has recently been challenged with very solid arguments by the finding of italian scholars). In particular I found the book of Hillary Gatti "Giordano Bruno and the renaissance science" extremely interesting and complete.

Giordano Bruno stands at the cusp between the Renaissance and the modern world. His unique attempts to extract philosophical and theological meaning from Copernicus's forward-looking work provide us with striking insights into the Weltanschauung of his troubled times. Gosselin and Lerner have brilliantly translated Bruno's elegant but involuted Renaissance Italian into clear modern English that nevertheless preserves the spirit of the original. Their thoughtful notes bring comprehensibility to previously misunderstood passages, and the linkage they establish between Bruno's travails and Galileo's later troubles is highly convincing. A must-read for the scientist as well as the philosopher

This was a good book. General MacKenzie WAS the great American Indian/bandit fighter which spawned the myth(?) of the American West in the next century (John Wayne played MacKenzie's role in "Rio Grande"). As for his place in history, he was not shot down in his prime the way the inept Custer was, and as a result, he has all but been forgotten in Western lore (his going mentally insane didn't help matters either).

The book reads easily, flows well and the author doesn't bog you down with unimportant details. I recommend this book to anyone with a mild-to-high curiosity about the Indian Wars and the history of the American Southwest in the late 1800s.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Coverage of Ranald Mackenzie is rather sparse and this book does a great job of detailing the man's entire life. Mackenzie was one of the many frontier heros who did not gain the notariety of other Indian fighters, but he was one of the most successful. Mackenzie showed the ability to learn from his mistakes and adapt tactics as necessary. He also served in all the theaters of Indian warfare (Northern Plains, Southern Plains, US/Mexico Border, and Arizona). This book is easy and entertaining to read and will hopefully help us remember an Indian fighter that history has tried to forget.

Stanley is a masterful writer/illustrator when it comes to creating longer picturebook biographies (with heavier text). Her bios on da Vinci, Cleopatra and Shakespeare are fabulous. It amazes me that she has not won a Caldecott Honor yet! I can't wait to see her bio about Michelangelo!

Our family has recently discovered the wonderful Peter Vennema/Diane Stanley biographies. They are vivid, engaging, and thorough, yet short enough for younger readers to sit through (my daughters are 4 and 6). Bard of Avon and Good Queen Bess are our favorites so far, and they go very well together since neither Shakespeare nor Queen Elizabeth would have been the same without the other. Unlike other histories or biographies for children, this book makes a destinction between what we know about Shakespeare's life and times and what are only guesses. It is nice for children to see that the study of history is not just memorizing facts and dates, but piecing together clues in the context of what is known about a time period. As a former high school English teacher, I wish that I had had this book when I was teaching Shakespeare plays because it would have been a wonderful introduction.

I'm going to have to agree with the above review, the only thing I can add is the fact that Barron's not only makes review books for Physics, but for many other subjects as well. I think it would be foolish not(italics) to buy these for your classes.

As the year progresses, you look up questions that pertain to where your class is. I found that my teachers often took questions for their tests and quizzes and quests right from old regents's themselves, which is what these books contain(not to mention the answers hint hint). At least until they found out that more people were buying these things and had to change their tests!(darn!).

Many old practice Regents exams included, answers explained. Need I say more?

This book is an outstanding study tool for students enrolled in college preparatory physics courses or AP Physics B courses. I have found it an EXTREMELY valuable starting point for my own quizzes and tests. The questions seem to be the perfect balance between conceptual and computational assessments. I use the books in this series as the ideal curricular standard for the courses described above. Highest praise for the authors.

The late Paul Ramsey continues to speak to our situation today. This book, originally published circa 1950, provides an outstanding introduction, not simply to Christian ethics, but to Ramsey's way of thinking. Especially thought-provoking is the section "What the Christian Does Without a Code."

This fascinating look at the basic tenets of Christianity is both powerful and enlightening. It should be required reading for anyone studying ethics or theology as well as christians who want to come to a greater understanding of their religion and faith. Particularly noteworhty is the chapter called "Christian Love in Search of a Social Policy" which discusses, among other things, the concept of rights in the framework of compassion. This book has helped me come to a deeper understanding of my own faith and values and has transformed my perspective on a number of issues.

This is an excellent book with tons of pictures and drawings. I am the inhouse repairman for an apartment building and this is an excellent reference manual... Should make my job much easier. Highly recomend this book.

This book is an excellent instructional book for a novice/starting plumber like me, an IT/electronics person. With the excellent fundamentals, the nice and colorful drawings and the detailed step-by-step instructions, I was able to replace a p-trap, a tail piece and a strainer of a kitchen sink on my own. I attribute this first-ever accomplishment of mine to this book. The book is so simple, so informative, even a 12-year-old can do the job after a few minutes of reading. Highly recommended for aspiring plumbers. How's that for cost-saving from expensive plumbers and boosting your self-actualization and learning a new skill ?

I checked out this book/tape from the library for my children just because it looked interesting. I didn't even listen to it, but when they did, they didn't play another tape for three whole weeks! The book has a short history of each kind of music, and the accompanying tape has an original song written in each style. It is well put together and the tunes are catchy. My kids liked it so much I ended up buying one for them, and I have bought three more for birthday gifts for my kids' friends. I would definitely recommend it!

Great songs and music...especially "Brain Power". My students made a real connection with this music. I teach at an inner city school in Tampa, FL. Would love to meet the author. Does he have any other material?

Olga Broumas understands the makings of the fantastic being. The book involves several types of fluid mixing -- mythology & history from her Greek heritage, shamelessly erotic flashes & soft touches, & some well-known western fairy tales & legends. For me, the climax of her cursive, unique language is in the second-to-last poem of the book, Little Red Riding Hood, in which she describes being born with her "mantle of blood" then elegantly, respectfully minding her mother's advice in life, which is "mind where you got to go, mind you get there," & a delicious amount of other world-wary stances. Between that poem & one of the first, Triple Muse, which ends, "We are of one mind, tuning our instruments to ourselves by our triple light," there is no slackening of vision.

Olga Broumas's "Beginning With O" was required reading when I attended college in the late 1970s. Having read and re-read the book many times, I came away regretting that I was born male and could not, therefore, be lesbian. For these are love poems of the highest order--exquisitely crafted, dangerously erotic, and even comical, as when Broumas writes: "There are still other fluids/fecund,/tail-whipped with seed...." Broumas clearly owes a great deal to her spiritual ancestor, Sappho. A Greek by birth, Broumas shares Sappho's love for other women and, while more sensuous and erotic and less witty overall than the 7th century BC master whom Plato referred to as the "tenth Muse", her celebration of beauty rivals Sappho's own. Most satisfying is the section of "Beginning With O" titled "The Twelve Aspects of God" wherein Broumas reexplores classical mythology in the light of goddess-worship; her goddesses are potent, sexual, and often real women. The light she sheds is shimmering--more moonlight than sunlight, her words are not "winged" but fall from a wet tongue into dark places which are beautiful not only for their lunar sheen but for the darknesses themselves. Sappho wrote, "If you're squeamish, don't prod the beach rubble." Broumas delights in prodding; seaweed and cunt are words of celebration in her remarkable lexicon.

My mom bought this for me when I got engaged. I haven't gotten around to trying all the recipes yet, but I have tried those such as the Rosemary and Mushroom Beef Tenderloin, the Apricot Pork Medallions, and the Sherried Pork, among others. They are soooo great! The food tastes good, I'm able to make the entire meal in 30 mins, and my husband is no longer starving. All this from me, the girl who's mom feared she'd never like cooking! With a cookbook like this, who wouldn't like cooking?!

One of the things I *really* love about this book is that EVERY recipe has a picture. I like to see how my creations are suppose to turn out. So far so good! The recipes also suggest what to serve with it which has really developed my meal-making skills.

These days we eat, we eat well, and we still have time to kick back and watch Friends! This book is a definite must for newlyweds or anyone loking for great, easy, and quick recipes.

These recipes are simple, easy, but don't taste simple - they actually taste more sophisticated than I expected. Especially the Southwest Chicken Skillet and the Southwest Chicken Soup! Also, these are mostly ingredients you can buy and keep in the freezer for when you need them.
