Mixed bag
A mixed bag of philosophies. There are many other books more practical and useful than this (examples Gottman, Parrott).

saved my marriage
This is not another how-to book. Instead, it describes the elements essential to making relationships work, and saving those that are in trouble. I found many excellent essays that helped me think more deeply about what I wanted in relationship, and it helped to burst some bubbles as well -- fantasies I had that made my goals seem too idealistic to achieve. In Waldman's introduction, he lists 25 criteria that American women demand from their mates -- 20 more than anyone else asks for in other parts of the world. We seem to want it all; no wonder we're so angry and disappointed when reality sets in! Thanks to this book, I was able to approach love more realistically. Today I'm in a wonderful, mutually caring relationship. Finally!

A remarkable collection of essays - a must read!
Here is a relationship cuisine that is bound to nourish and awaken interest within and between people desiring lives together. This is a book of hope and heart, a collection of works that would be enhanced by being r3ead aloud, idscussed and shered in depth with at least one other person. Waldman makes very good points about our wanting love, togetherness with significant others, and wanting to endure with one another as long as there is meaning, and our needs, values, and directions are being shared and fulfilled. Provocative, thoughtful, and helpful - a superior gathering of nourishing articles. (Reviewed in New Perspectives Journal)

Save your pennies
Cricket the grand old English game, the gentlemens game. More research should have explained the games heritage and how it was introduced to the countries that were under English rule, thus giving a greater understanding of how the game came to dominate in the former English colonies. I think that this emphasis would have made for not only a deeper understanding of why Cricket has failed to establish itself as a serious sport in many countries that were not part of the English commowealth but also why the game is steaped in English tradition.

Informative and amusing at the same time
This book is best suited to somebody who has witnessed some cricket without having a clue what was going on. The book is filled with answers to questions typical of the ones a novice might ask (why do they all wear white? don't they all get bored? who's WINNING???). Fun cartoons throughout. I understand that the UK edition of this book is called 'what is a googly?'.

The closer you look, the better it is
My first quick perusal of this book lead to a mild sense of disappointment, but the more I studied the pictures, the more I came to appreciate their artistry. And while the pictures may be from the '60s and '70s, some poses seem very 1950's style. I would also prefer one picture of each model--and therefore more models. But the pictures are of high quality. All in all, a real Mel Roberts fan-either for eroticism or nostalgia-might easily enjoy his videos much more

Simple, timeless photography
Wow!! Does this book ever recapture those seemingly inncocent days of the 60s and early 70s?

Some wonderful models, wonderful locations and most of all a wonderfully bright and sunny California sky. Most of the photos have a warmth of light that simply glows from the page..

This book is like the Beach Boys but in photographs and not songs. The images convey a simple innocence and enjoyment. The haircuts and clothing takes you back to those easier, less frenetic times.

The poses range from the very formal style of the 1950s, to the informal 'snapshot' from 1979. The models are, for the most part, not the hulks seen in so many American physique photos, but rather more evryday types of guys. The emphasis is on the young, and if you have a hunkering for the blond surfer type, you won't be disappointed.

Well worth buying.

A Must Have for Serious Photography Collectors
You will have the most fun with this volume of Mel Roberts' work, if you pick it up without any expectations. It's been over 20 years since Roberts' work has been available to the public, and the collection here is different than any other collection of his work in the past, which mind you, were put out by the author with whatever funds he had available. This time, the guy's got a small-press publisher behind him footing the bill, so there's a sleekness to the presentation that never existed before.

What I loved the most about this book was not the models, or the settings, though both are beautiful and interesting, but the most intriguing element for me was that Roberts' work seems to have captured an innocence of a "time," a time which will never be again. So many photographers today are trying to photograph that "retro" look, and failing miserably at it. Mel Roberts has done it because he was there doing it, capturing the essence of the 1960s, in the 1960s. Besides, the whole thing is very erotic, a must have for serious collectors. I've already bought 3 prints from the book and plan to buy more! Bravo! to Mel Roberts and whomever (FotoFactory Press) had the inspiration and intelligence to bring this man's work out of the woodwork!

It's Okay
Its concepts are amazing to any programmer but, widely known, I learned just as much from my Instructor in my post-secondary class then I did in this book. The Karel code also gets a little boring. However, to be a good programmer you need to know these concepts through and through, so I do find it useful as an introduction to programming. I don't recommend it to anyone who knows their own logical style well already; it will be useless to you.

Book is quite good, Software does not run.
The presentation of the concepts of programming and the building of layers of complexity was handled in a competent and easily read manner. However, the software simulator is completely out of date and does not run under windows 98. For beginning programming students with little or no other computer experience, this would be a good starting point...IF the software worked.

Richard Pattis is a genius!
This book is very well written and I highly recommend it. It is interesting to read, and very comprehensive. Richard Pattis is my 15-127 professor. (I hope I get an A on the Mastery! ) Thanks.

Baseball Register 2001
All at your fingertips: this book has all of the basic stats for each and every player who played a game in 2000. However, I felt that this book could have been a lot better. I have to stress that this book only presents the classic basic stats such as batting averages, RBIs, etc, but not slugging percentages, on base averages, or WHIPs. Also, the book provides no photographs (even Who's Who In Baseball has photos of most of the 700 players in their little book) and very skimpy player biographies. STATS Inc provided the statistics for this book and publish their own line of books, including Major League Handbook, which would probably have more of the numbers that more hardcore fans would want. What would have set this book apart from Major League Handbook would have been interesting biographies or photos, not tidbits such as "led California League in total chances in 1994". Save your money for STATS' Major League Handbook.

A very thorough book.
For stat lovers, this is a must. Gives stats on all players plus prospects. Also year end league leading stats. They could improve on a few things - like showing a players slugging average and on-base average, which are much more important than showing how many times a guy turned a double play in the minors.

Indispensible!
The plot is lousy but the cast of characters is tremendous! This is the standard reference work used by announcers for those endless trivia games they play with each other and the audience while filling the time taken up by intentional walks and visits to the mound. The Sporting News has sponsored this book for the past umpteen years--I have kept every copy I bought right next to my TV chair for easy reference during the season. Great for finding past players without searching through the hardbound, 5-pound encyclopedia. My copies are well-thumbed.

Good complement to....
another guidebook such as Rick Steves book. Recommend.

Frommer's Again?
I tried desperatly to purchase any other guidebook on Ireland other than Frommer's and Fodor's. But after an exhausting search Frommer's wins again: It has information found only in Frommer's. Reviews more variety of lodging and dining. Helps with ideas on side trips and day trips. Gives just enough inside information to help you make an informed decision on where to go stay and do. For an overview of Ireland, you can't go wrong with Frommer's. For more in depth on a single area.....You will need to do more research. Likewise, if you have a specific reason for the trip i.e. windsurfing or gaelic music a different format may help you. But for basic advice on travel Frommer's is hard to beat.

Great travel guide for Ireland
During an extended stay in Ireland I've used the guide a great deal for many different parts of the island, with an emphasis on the Dublin area. The maps of city centers are wonderful, the highlighted attractions are always as advertised, and the restaurant listings have been very reliable. It offers a great deal of depth, and the format makes it easy to find day trips from various cities you may be staying in.

It's well worth noting that the hotel rates listed are generally rack rates, and you will frequently find them much lower when you call.

Friends I've loaned the book to have agreed that it's the best one for the area that they've used. I'd recommend it highly to anyone considering a visit. Just don't forget your rain gear.

Not worth your time
I had to read this book for an introductory programming class and didn't find it at all helpful when going on to Java. It wasn't worth the time I spent working with it. You'd be better off just beginning the object-oriented language you're interested in. If you want my advice, try Beginning Java Objects by Jacquie Barker instead.

Good Start for Younger Readers
This book reminds me of the older LOGO programming language. You have a small "robot" that explores his world. You tell him how to move and what to do. The only reason this is good is that it helps you think of object oriented programming. (The robot is considered an object). There are also special editions of the book in case you want to specifically move to C++ or Java later. Basically, the book is a good start. If you have any programming experience - skip it. Otherwise, it will get you in the rate frame of mind to move toward OOP.

A Decent but very basic intro to C++
This book is meant for the earliest of beginning programmers. If you have any programming experience whatsoever, even with macros, the information in this book will seem extrememly remedial. Also, some of the terms used aren't even real C++ code, so you'll have to adjust your thinking just a little when you move on. Finally, the price is pretty steep for the amount of information you get. I would probably only recommend this book for someone needing a very, very, VERY gentle intro to programming.

Why is the truth always termed racist or anti-semetic
Here you have a book written 'on the spot' at the time of this atrocity. The finger points at the internationl Jew with out a doubt. The NAZI holocaust pales compared to the pogrom this ignited.

A Shocking True Story
Complete, shocking story of how, and why, the Soviet secret police massacred Tsar Nicholas II, his wife Alexandra, and their five children. As head of the dynasty that had ruled Russia for three centuries, Nicholas II personified his land and people. His cold-blooded murder by order of Lenin and Sverdlov was thus symbolic of the Communist effort to obliterate a rich national and cultural heritage, and presaged the terrible Soviet bloodletting of later years. Dramatic yet meticulous account by a veteran British journalist and historian, based on the official on-site inquest of Russian investigator Nikolai Sokolov -- the most thorough ever conducted. As special correspondent in Russia for the London Times during the years of revolution and civil war, the author writes with authority and rare candor. He forthrightly assigns responsibility for the historic crime, showing the role of racial-ethnic revenge in motivating the killers. The crucial Jewish role in the Communist takeover of Russia and the early Bolshevik regime is detailed in an eye-opening introduction by historian Mark Weber, and an appendix by the author. Attractive, updated new edition of an authoritative but long-suppressed work. A generous selection of rare and revealing photographs supplements the text.

If you want the truth, read this book!!
This book explains to the reader why they were murdered, how they were murdered, and who was responsible for these horrific crimes. The author, who lived in Russia for quite a few years before the Bolshevik Revolution and investigated the murders a year after they happened, is able to provide first hand information and facts about this terrible event. The book was originally published in London in 1920.

mediocre songs
his didn't cut it. some of the stories were of the kind where the military are challenged by pulpish creatures. i hate those stories. there is a story by Smith here, not really good horror, but had suspence. in addition there is a good story by Rainey. but the rest, no. Some, like Piccirrilli, get almost interesting, but in the end, you wonder why you read them.

"Sounds of silence"
Stephen Mark Rainey has edited a very pleasant collection of stories for the Cthulhu enthusiast. While most are either familiar or non-memorable, one newer story is particularly eerie: "In the Rue dAuseil" by Fred Chappell has exactly the frisson and dark laughter that characterize HPL. The collector of automata focuses on musicians, and composes for them. In his searches he finds out what Erich Zann really was... Good reading for Hallowe'en!

Do you like scary stories?
If you are a fan of H.P. Lovecraft or even if you are not these stories are well written and geniunely scary. It was a pleasure to read. I highly recommend this book.
