Excellent
I reviewed the other volume in this unabridged re-publishing of the two volumes, and I highly recommend them. They are certainly must-reads for all.

Great re-publishing of the ancient Chinese epic
This, along with the other volume (also on this site), make an excellent epic story. This re-publishing has an informative foreword, is in paperback, and is unabridged (the two volumes combines make over a thousand pages!). I highly recommend these two volumes.

Unashamed, direct, honest, on par with women poets today.
This collection was a huge surprise. Unlike the steryo type of what women in China was like, subservient to husbands they are forced to marry, with little thoughts and feelings for themselves.

These women poets starting from 1644-1911, shout out thier love of thier partners, discuss drinking, sex, lust, romance, infactutation and even loving other women.

The metaphors are soft and light at the first reading, yet if you look deeper you realise some of the subjects are far from the softness the poetry is conveyed in.

A good histrical text on Chinese Women and a good read. As the previous reviewer said, buy two and give one to a friend.

One of the greatest collaborative translations ever
An exciting selection of poems by known and previously unknown women poets. Ling Chung's scholarship and sensitivity gave the late great Kenneth Rexroth the insight and inspiration to outdo himself here. Buy two copies and give one to a friend.

Advanced Kicks is a Must Have.......
Advanced Kicks is a must have for any Fan or Student (past, present,or future) of Sifu Cynthia Rothrock.

It has a very good and easy to follow format. However...like ANY instructional book or video...... it is only a guide to actual training with a Qualified instructor. One could get "Hurt" trying to do some of the stretches or kicking drills without the proper warmup.

What would make this book complete is if it were to have a Video package.

I own a copy (*1st printing)of this book and use it as a reference manual at my Martial Arts Studio.

*A note to Collectors. This book has two printings. Both printings are pretty much the same. The difference is the "price" on the back cover.

An Advanced System for Playing Mah Jong
Published in Hardcover by Dorrance Publishing Co (01 January, 1973)
Author: Chung Wu
Amazon base price: $19.95
Average review score:

For a Deeper Understanding of the Chinese Game
An Advanced System for Playing Mah Jong may not be the best book for beginners or casual players. This system is quite different from most of the normal approches used to play Mah Jong. It is not complicated, in fact in some ways it simplifies things, but it will require some adjustment to your thinking. It does help westerners play more effectively in the true Chinese forms of the game. Prof. Wu writes in beautifully clear, easy to read English (he spent much of his adult life in the US). And the fact that it was first published nearly 30 years ago does nothing to reduce its usefulness.

Aside from his System, Prof. Wu gives us a really fascinating historical background to the game. I have never heard these things before. Many of the historical notions most of us in America hold about Mah Jong are completely wrong. For instance, the Red, Green and White Honors never had anything whatsoever to do with dragons! This was some kind of fanciful promotional idea introduced by the early American importers like Babcock, et. al.

All in all, if you are interested in a deeper understanding of the purer Chinese forms of Ma Jong, this is a wonderful book. I certainly am glad I bought it.

Lao's review
A very good "how to" manual for embroidery styles found in Japan, China and Korea. Covers the history of embroidery technique from personal and home accessories, to Chinese Dragon Robes, Japanese Kimono and Korean Wedding Robes. Full color plates augmented with black and white line drawings showing robe construction and embrodery placement. A very nice section in the back covering Chinese symbolism as found in dragon robes and other classical textiles.

Excellent Modern Treatment of an Ancient Subject
This superb, broad collection of detailed papers on ancient Eastern Central Asia is fascinating for anyone interested in the subject. Though presented for professionals in the field, virtually every paper is intelligible to the lay person, opening new horizons for anyone interested in the history of this region. Exceptionally well-edited, with chapters covering archeology, migration and nomadism, linguistics, genetics and physical anthropology, metallurgy, textiles, geography and climatology, history, mythology and ethnology, a long overdue comprehensive treatment of this subject is finally at hand. Every contributor to the two-volume set should be pleased with this phenomenal achievement. Persons interested in many diverse topics, such as Zoroastrian studies, history of the Fergana Valley, or Tocharian linguistics, will still find many papers of interest, whether treated as separate subjects or not. Outstanding!
