"Those with limited views ..."
I have nothing to say about definitions of religion, or about the relative degree of the author's 'enlightenment'. What I will say is about this book. For the non-specialist, this is the best you can get for a NARRATIVE HISTORY of the development and spread of Buddhism. Forget the other esoteric references (which do indeed color the author's other books). THIS IS GOOD STRAIGHTUP HISTORY WRITING.

concise summary of Buddhism
Buddhism is not a religion because it demands cultivation and realization. It is therefore essential to select only writings written by the enlightened; or one can be led astray. Master Nan has been a Buddhist practitioner almost all his life and is believed by many to have seen the path. This book reviews all the basic concepts in Hinayana and Mahayana Buddhism. Being written by someone who really knows, it is very different.

Like all Master Ma's books, it is a book that you would like to keep for your whole life and then pass onto you children. For those who are interested in this area, you will never regret owning this book.

Review Quotes
"Here is a Vietnamese Whitman: a poet who loves his country, trapped in a brutal conflict between North and South, a poet who embraces chaos and sculpts it into song. His darkest poems leave room for collective rebirth, or at least survival. 'Whatever happens, the land lives within us,' he writes. 'We are the people--we will endure.'" --Catherine A. Salmons, The Boston Sunday Globe

"Duy's quietly potent war poems are unforgettable." --The Boston Sunday Globe

"The English translation reveals Nguyen Duy as a passionate voice, one of courage and conviction, hope and love. He mines the beauty of simple, direct language in a way that is personal and political, without rhetoric or didacticism." --Lori Tsang, Multicultural Review

"...an extended love poem to Vietnam, and to the enduring nobility of its people." --Philip Gambone, The New York Times Book Review

Rare instance of good poetry translation
There's a saying in a foreign language, meaning something like "to translate is to betray." That the saying itself can't be translated smoothly is very revealing of the difficulties facing a translator of literary works.

Especially poetry. You can't read, say, Shakespeare sonnets in another language without thinking that the Bard is spinning in his grave.

There is no perfect translation of poetry. And this one ain't perfect. But it is pretty darn good. The imageries translate well, though the clever sounds are mostly lost. That can't be helped -- if you can't keep the clever sound in "traduire c'est trahir" in the English "to translate is to betray", then you have to live without the clever sounds in Nguyen Duy's poetry.

Nguyen Duy is the first poet to sound the alarm over the decaying state of the Vietnamese economy, morals, public spirit, and morale. He is a rare North Vietnamese poet to grieve over the tragedy of the boat people (mostly southerners). He called for "doi moi" (VN's perestroika) years before the government would do so.

But he is not a political dissident. That is not a poet's job. A poet speaks to one's conscience, not one's vote. Nguyen Duy has done so, in style. And the translation manages to keep much of that style.

My one year old loves Frank and Joey!
My one year old loves the Frank and Joey books! He picks the Frank and Joey books out of the stack. He loves the combination of photos and drawings. His father is a big guy in construction like Frank. My two year old nephew and four year old niece also loved the stories when they came to visit for summer vacation. I logged on to Amazon to see if there were any additional adventures...

short and sweet!
This book is funny from cover to cover; for myself and my three year old. Good natured fun, reminds me of Stan and Oliver.

Go Grandma!
Okay, I won't hide the fact from you that May Tang is my grandma. So naturally I'm biased. She's an amazing lady who has lived a life almost as remarkable as her father about whom this book is about.

Read it.

May Tang is a superb writer with a gift
The House Of Chung is an engaging novel that portrays China's transition from an absolute monarchy to a Communist state as reflecting in the travails of one Shanghai family. The eventful first seventy years of the are made intelligible as we see the fall of the Imperial Manchu Dynasty, the Chinese Revolution of 1911, the Warlord's Interlude, the Japanese Invasion, World War II, and the Communist occupation of Shanghai, and throughout this era of turmoil, the strength of family and individual faith remain a constant within the swirling maelstroms of political and social change. May Tang is a superb writer with a gifted ability to totally engage the reader's rapt attention from first page to last.

Absolutely Hilarious!
As a science fiction/techno-thriller author, I rarely have time to indulge my taste for business comedy. But somehow in my busy schedule, I picked up a copy of Steven Lo's hilarious book, and found myself making excuses to my editor on why I didn't show up at my book signing. I was too busy laughing out loud at Mr. Lo's hilarious semi-autobiographical tome concerning the world of high tech business and the life of a Chinese American tech student wrapped into one side splitting novel. A must have.

Exceptional!
I suggest you should buy this book because not even my books compare to this one. It was simply stunning!

Wonderful!
I thoroughly enjoyed this account of Chung Ju Yung's life and the rise of Hyundai. The son of impoverished farmers, Chung managed to build the world's largest shipbuilding company, create a competitive Korean automobile, and sped the development of South Korea into one of the world's foremost economies--all with little more than sweat and determination!
Steers does a great job of detailing Chung's personal and business character, along with providing a detailed history of the growth of Hyundai in the larger context of the Korean economy. I highly recommend it!

A great book about a truly amazing man.
The engineering and managerial feats that Chung Ju Yung accomplished with only a grade school education are amazing.

Non-Functional Requirements in Software Engineering (THE KLUWER INTERNATIONAL SERIES IN SOFTWARE ENGINEERING Volume 5)
Published in Hardcover by Kluwer Academic Publishers (01 October, 1999)
Authors: Lawrence Chung, Brian A. Nixon, Eric Yu, John Mylopoulos, and Brain A. Nixon
Amazon base price: $168.00
Average review score:

Nice piece of work
This book provides an excellent framework, set of tools, and methodology to make system design decisions based on analysis non-functional requirements and "softgoals," often lacking in other software engineering methodologies and tools. In chapter 14 of the book, the authors provide extensions to the tools to model to analyze strategic rationale and business goals of a system, and apply them to a hypothetical business process re-engineering example. I believe that the authors here have presented a base set of tools and methodologies that have applications far beyond the field of software engineering as demonstrated in this chapter, and I look forward very much to see where this work will lead.

All you need to know about non-functional requirements.
From qualitative analysis to quantitative anlysis it is all there. Non-functional requirements (NFRs) are like the step-child to functional requirmeents but this book finally gives NFRs their due. It is a must read for any person in the software/systems engineering community. Especially impressive is the graphic representations which compliment the text.
