A Must for Practitioners of Pediatrics!
The 5-minute pediatric consult is written in an easy to read outline format. The writers have eliminated unnecesary obscure data and offer a concise outline of all major pediatric diseases. The topics are designed to be read in 5 minutes or less and all the up to date information to diagnose and treat a specific illness is included. The topics are alphabetized, so they are easy to look up. The writers are accomplised experts in their fields and the book has been edited by the distinguished Dr. Schwartz, at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. As a professor of Pediatrics, I highly recommend this book to practicing pediatricians, family practitioners, nurses and students.

The Rise of Modern China

Still a definitive work after three decades
Now in it's sixth edition, this work bt C.Y. Hsu is still one of the most popular textbooks on this subject in universities across the country. Within its 1000+ pages the book covers the period from the beginning of the Ching dynasty (1644) to 1998. I believe that what separates this book from others on this subject is that instead of focusing primarily on geography, chronology, and names, it attempts to provide a glimpse of the personalities and motivations of the many important figures that emerged during this period. The chapters concerning the years between the decline of the Ching at the turn of the 19th century and the establishment of the PRC in 1949 are extremely well done, and convey a great deal of information about important players of that age such as Sun Yat Sen, Mao, and Chiang Kai Shek. It is a well-researched, well-written book, and a pleasure to read.

Definitive
Whether you are studying Chinese history or you're simply interested in China, this book is essential for every library. It is both consumately researched and artfully written.

Asian history doesn't get any better than this!

"The Rise of Modern China" by Immanuel Hsu
It is a very good book, it is very thorough, and factual, it is really critical of Mao. I highly recommend it

Couldn't do without it
I had a series with slightly less-than brilliant interviews with a couple of US consulting firms after completing my (part-time) MBA last year here (I am a liberal arts undergrad major form an European school). One of the intervievers referred me to the Vault site and this book particularly to help me correct my alleged "firehose" approach to business cases for... my next interviews. To my amazement, it worked. I gladly recommend it to anyone interested in getting into consulting.

best case interview preparation in print
In my opinion, this Vault guide is the best guide available which prepares the reader to excel in a case interview. I suggest you at least flip throug it if you are serious about doing well during consulting firm interviews.

excellent and essential guide
This guide contains numerous essential frameworks, case strategies, and actual case questions with model answers. There must have been more than 100 cases of various types in the guide. I highly recommend to anyone pursuing a consulting position, particularly with strategy consulting practice areas.

Fortress Besieged
Published in Textbook Binding by Indiana University Press (1980)
Author: Chung-Shu Chien
Amazon base price: $17.50
Used price: $128.43
Average review score:

Comedy in the Highest Form
One of the greatest modern Chinese novels. Disguised as a "modern Rulin Waishi (Scholars)," Fortress Besieged is much more than an ingenious satire of the haute intellectual class in 1930's China. Its depictions of Chinese society in a time of great adversity (the Sino-Japanese War rumbles in the background much as the Napoleonic Wars do in the works of Jane Austen) is thorough and penetrating. The sheer wit of Qian Zhongshu, who possesses a stunning erudition in both the Chinese and Western literary traditions, makes the book one of few "random access novels": novels the reader can flip to any page and start reading with equal relish. The central characters, Su Wenwan, Tang Xiaofu, Zhao Xinmei and Sun Roujia are all unforgettable. Above all, it is the portrayal of the hero Fang Hongjian that elevates the novel to the realm of the highest tragicomedy.

A must read book for bookworms
Fortress Besieged is one of the set books in the morden Chinese literature course I take. Though I like English literature more than Chinese one, this book gave me a refresh. Chien Chung Shu was so called Scholar writer, his works are full of both Chinese and western idioms. Therefore reading Fortess Besiged you can learn a lot of about Chinese and western world. Though it was written in the 30s, you will not feel it is old fashioned.

A Great Book, Must Read
I am astonished to find that this book has not been reviewed by anyone at amozon.com. Fortress Besieged is the immortal work by one of the most talented Chinese modern novelists, Chung-Shu Chien (Qian, Zhong-shu). This book has been translated into all major languages and enjoyed by readers all over the world. It has also been made into a very popular TV series in early 90's in China. Almost every educated Chinese is familiar with the story of this book, while the truth of life told by this book appeals universally to all mankind.

This book is about the life of a young Chinese intellectual in the 30's. His travel, his career, and most importantly, his relation with women. Through the simple, everyday happenings of this young man, the author shrewdly seeks for the motivation that drives us to receiving education, building a career, falling in love, and forming a family. The conclusion is that everything of life, including career, marriage, etc., is like a besieged fortress; the people ouside of it want break into it and the people inside of it want to break out of it.

The language used in this book is very humorous, sarcastic, and intellectual. Preferrably read in Chinese to get the most enjoyment out of it.

Learn about Taiwan's Economic Miracle!
This clever little book takes one through the "Taiwan Experience," the stages of Taiwan's economic progress. The author's personal anecdotes and cartoon illustrations give good historical background and lend to the book's unique appeal. I highly recommend it!

Experience Taiwan's economic miracle first-hand!
This is a fascinating and fun book that details Taiwan's economic miracle through the eyes of a businessman who has lived through it. Easy to read, interesting, and cleverly illustrated...it's a must-read for anyone wishing to do business in Taiwan. I couldn't put this book down once I picked it up!

Unique book on Taiwan's economic development by an insider
This is a unique book about Taiwan's "miraculous" economic development written by a Taiwanese businessman who lived through it and, as the founder of a leading Taiwanese electronics firm and one of Taiwan's wealthiest men, in many ways helped create it. Clearly written with a refreshing light-hearted style, this book is a must-read for anyone wishing to do business in Taiwan.

very good one
simple and understandable language. was extremely helpful in my course.

The simplest book on TCP/IP
There is no doubt that apart from Douglas Comer's three-volume set, this is the best book to learn TCP/IP. Behrouz has simply created magic, with his usual liberal use of diagrams and tables to explain complex topics with ease.

I would strongly recommend this book for those who want to learn TCP/IP at a conceptual level in addition to Comer. However, if you want to go to the internals, this may not be the right book for you.

The best book on TCP/IP that I have come across.
I consider myself very fortunate to be one of the first few to have a copy of this book (draft copy that is sold at DeAnza College Bookshop). I fully recommend this book as it starts from the basics and covers all aspects of TCP/IP. I understand that the published version of this book will cover a few additional topics. I am really looking forward to reading this book. An essential book for everyone interested in TCP/IP. Also an EXCELLENT reference book.

A book I will reread often
This book helped me because it broke down and discussed attitudes and fears I wasn't always aware of, that get in the way of learning. Using many general stories and specific examples relevant to skiing, McCluggage explains things that hinder learning and improvement. This is not a book that tells you exactly where to put your right hand as you conquer the hill, but rather it helps you center, relax, and visualize a smooth ride as you go with the mountain. Various chapters titles: The Energy in Fear, Working with Images, Breathing. It sounds esoteric but it is actually very simple and straightforward to understand.

If you had to choose only one book on skiing this is the one
Denise McLuggage is a genius. She was 20 years ahead of everybody when she wrote this book. There was no such thing as shaped skis back then. Yet, she knew the art and the science of skiing exactly, independently of the equipment one uses.

I have read that book again and again. I never get tired of it.

Centered Skier
This book is one of the great works on skiing. It opens your mind to the possibilities of the sport and can be used to help with any sport you participate in. Easy to read and right to the point. This book is a classic among classic sport pyscology books. A must read for anyone looking for the Zen path in sports.

Taking the Reader on a Poet's Wanderings
Poetry is the highest level of language subtlety and complexity. It takes work to comprehend and understand. Korean poetry in translation is next to impossible to access, grasp, or appreciate, especially for readers steeped in Western traditions. Fortunately, this novel is not so much about poetry, even though some very nice explanations abound; it is about the poet. When a tradition mandates that the political miscalculations of a person must be visited upon the 'third and fourth generation' by society, most Westerners are unable to grasp the gravity and finality of such social behavior. Their ideology of individualism cannot comprehend such group power. Yi Mun-yol, and his translator, Chong-Wha Chung, bridge some of these cultural divides by simply looking at the poetry we call life. Thus, we are all poets, and when the suffering poet, Kim, of this novel wanders into the countryside, we walk with him. Life can be cold and cruel, full of inner turmoil and pain. Our lives may be different, but many of the elements of life's poetry are universal. We live in times that are harried and hurried. If there is a need to pause and reflect, contemplate and feed the soul, walking with Yi Mun-yol's THE POET may provide some food for thought.

Sad but True
I chanced to find this book at London when I was traveling there, and was very happy to find it on the shelve though it was placed too deep to find it out. Anyway, it really reminded me the discrepancy between what we believe right and what really happened several centuries ago. We are still believing that any forms of discrimination no matter what color we are, wher we live, how much we earn. But discrimination was there where the story goes. This book does not only mirror the emotional flows of Kim Sat-kat, but tries to argue about the twisted social structure. And this attempt beautifully melted into the poem, Korean traditional 4 line poem which Kim wrote.

a man, whose life made him a poet
this story is about family, art and history. the poet's self-exiled journey is still too realistic for many koreans even today. the ideology that an individual cannot be freed from, distorts individual life into empty cynicism and self-hatred, especially in the circle of "artists." the traditional connection of writers with intellectuals, and intellectuals with conscience, is in the root of (in)famous debates between "pure literature" and "engagement." the writer suffers in the middle, but still he has to deal with his family history first. anyway, it turns out to be not so different from the collective history, in terms that it situates the weak and (maybe therefore) suffering conscience of today. and lastly, the poet was nothing but the prisoner of his poems (language).

An excellent translation of a document on Internal Alchemy
For research into Taoist concepts of Internal Alchemy, this is an excellent translation of a classic Taoist document. Wong even provides some helpful clarifications to the text that make it very readable.

For those studying philosophical Taoism or meditative Taoism that does not involve complex Internal Alchemy, it may not be as useful a resource. It's extremely complex and may seem odd to eyes of people unfamiliar with certain Taoist practices.

Excellent...
Eva Wong has done an admirable job translating several classic Taoist texts for Western consumption; in this book she continues to uphold the excellent work. These texts were allegorical references for internal alchemy (Qigong) and I have yet to find better translations.

Wong starts the book with a general overview of some of the historical discrepancies around the text, particularly when and by whom it was written. Her explanation, although somewhat short, is quite informative and sets the stage for the translation. She also provides information to assist the reader in understanding the somewhat 'cryptic' discussion of such terms as "yellow sprouts" and "true vapour".

The translation is actually very informative but the reader must leave behind the Western preoccupation with trying to put everything into direct terms. The Taoist's spoke of internal alchemy in a very poetic manner - something which I feel is probably the best method possible. That is, a lot is up to the intuition of the reader (with the help of a proper master) which is the best way to understand the subject. For those who have been cultivating this book will be an invaluable asset.

Highly recommended.

Great book on concepts and theories of Taoism!
This book caught my eye in the bookshop. I flipped through a few pages, read it, and i immediately liked the information offered there. It offers a concise and detailed look into the theories of health and longevity in Taoism.
The original text was written by 2 Taoist famed sages, one being Lu Tung Pin, which is perhaps one of the most popular figure in Taoism. WIth this book, you can learn about more indepth concepts of yin and yang, true yin within yang, "dragon" and "tiger", phases of the moon, the importance of the vapor and vitality and lots more! I couldn't put it down since i bought it. I don't know why, perhaps its the delivery of the concepts thats unique in this book... very well translated and written.
