Excellent!
I have the book and have taken the class with Dr. Malphrus. Both were extremely "Ben"eficial to my physics eduacation. This book is interesting on both the historical and scientific level. An excellent view into an evolving science.

Go Doc Malphrus!
We haven't really read the book but we're students of his and we love him. He's an awesome guy. GO DOC!

A comprehensive guide to the beginnings of radio astronomy.
This book offers an excellent look into the history and making of the science we now know as radio astronomy. Dr. Malphrus' book is also easy to understand, you need not be a physics major to make sense of the science he discusses. A great book for a interesting look into the once invisible world of radio astronomy.

MONTOYA: MASTER OF CLASSIC ELEGANCE
This masterful book is one of the very best design books out today. the fabulous photos give richly detailed images of how the mind of Montoya turns dreams into reality. Colorfully planned rooms evoke reverence for things past and present. Montoya's use of religious references inform us of his link with humanity. Indirect lighting mixed with many different kinds of stone, granite, marbles and limestone create theatrical yet uplifing interiors that make beckon us to linger. Always sensitive to his clients' desires and wishes, he incorporates scale, harmony and balance while implementing function with style. Montoya is a master of surprise, you'll go back to this collection of his work time and again.

Design excellence captured in print.
This 400 page pictorial of Juan Montoya's work, past and present, is an engaging look at the designer's commitment to creating living spaces with flair, refinement, and cultural aesthetic.

Juan Montoya reveals the inspirations for his designs - both furniture and interior design - coming from a broad range of technology; to foreign cultural artifacts that are used to enrich and enhance spaces.

The spaces he creates are magnificent - a miriad of textures and colors that blend harmoniously into a defined living space - which the self titled book reveals quite well. Large color images enable you to study subtle details of the various rooms. This book also gives you a certain time line of his experience and influences during recent decades. Much of the text is reprinted from Architectural Digest, among other periodicals and books. Not to miss is the spread that displays the custom furniture designs that have been created, and used in various client's residences and office spaces.

This is a great addition to anyone's design collection. Definately a keeper, as well as a great design resource.

Kingston Trio on Record

THE BIBLE OF THE KINGSTON TRIO
Superb, fun, and, most important, thorough history and discography of the great Trio. Lots of pictures and fascinating interviews (with the late Dave Guard, and Nick Reynolds, among others). Every song the Trio ever recorded is annotated, every release date of every single, album, and other material, including 7 Up commercials, is provided. Those of us still around who grew up with them and appreciated them know how great they were, and this book is a delightful revisiting of these extremely talented, and witty young men and their unique time - that tranquil window between the Eisenhower 50's and the Beatle-ized 60's. This book answers a lot of lingering questions. Happily, the guys who put together this book are also responsible for making available, thru their mail order outfit, every Kingston Trio recording that has been re-released on CD.

The single greatest tribute to THE TRIO(s)ever assembled
Having fallen in love with them when I was 7, and still considering them the greatest pop group of all time (sorry Beatles fans), this book is a must for anyone who wants to get to know them. Congrats to all concerned. There will never be anything like them ever again, and this book captures our little moment together better than anything except, of course, listening to the records. Thanks for the memories!!!

OH THE MEMORIES
I'M PROUD TO COUNT MYSELF AS A BIG BIG FAN OF NICK,BOB,DAVE AND later JOHN. I STILL PLAY THE 33RPM OF THEIR CONCERT AT UCLA and thrill to KEN Kangara, with Nick on the congo drum and Roddy McCorley, they bring back memories of a time of infinite promise known to us insiders as the 60's Ya hadda be there

(The Ethnic Trap!), par Benjamin Sehene
Au coeur de ce récit tragique -le voyage géographique et intérieur d'un exilé Tutsi au Rwanda-, le lecteur captivé se trouve emporté malgré lui dans les terribles mâchoires du piége ethnique.

Her First Book Read to her
This book is great. It was the first book read to her when she was just born. She still loves at 18 months. We read it to her at night and she loves to look at all the neat pages.

ONE OF MY DAUGHTER'S FAVORITE BOOKS SINCE 2 MONTHS OLD!
PRECIOUS MOMENTS LITTLE PRAYERS' illustrations and storyline are both 5 stars each so this book deserves 10 STARS! It is truly rare to find a book with a great story and illustrations like this one! No words I can utter would do this book justice--I'll let the book speak for itself:

"I'M READY TO SLEEP, ALL SAFE AND SNUG. I'VE HEARD A STORY AND HAD A HUG.

THANK YOU GOD, FOR A HAPPY DAY. GIVE ME A HAPPY TOMORROW, I PRAY.

I WONDER WHAT I'LL DREAM TONIGHT, HERE IN MY COZY BED. PERHAPS I'LL DREAM OF KINGS AND QUEENS OR JUST OF MY OLD BEAR, TED.

MY GUARDIAN ANGEL SPENDS THE NIGHT, AND KEEPS ME SAFE TILL MORNING'S LIGHT.

THANKS FOR THE SUN...THANKS FOR THE MOON...THANKS FOR THE STARS SO BRIGHT. THANKS FOR WATCHING OVER ME--MORNING, NOON AND NIGHT.

THANK YOU, GOD, FOR BOOKS AND TOYS TO SHARE WITH OTHER GIRLS AND BOYS.

THANK YOU, GOD, FOR EARTH AND SKY, FOR OCEANS DEEP AND MOUNTAINS HIGH, FOR SUMMER, WINTER, FALL AND SPRING--THANK YOU, GOD, FOR EVERYTHING."

Night-night, sweet dreams and remember God loves you!

Good Bedtime routine
My two-year-old loves this book! We read it every night before going to bed. The rhyming prayer was easy for her to memorize, so she now "reads" the book to me. The poem reviews the bedtime routine and reminds kids to be thankful for their world.

The Nature of the Judicial Process
Published in Hardcover by Wm Gaunt & Sons (1998)
Author: Benjamin N. Cardozo
Amazon base price: $55.00
Used price: $27.50
Average review score:

excellent explanation of the process of justice
The judicial process is often a maddeningly confusing one. Cardozo, one of the most well known and respected jurists in the history of American law, aims to give a relatively straightforward account of the judicial process.

The book is a good introduction to law and its processes. It certainly is not an authoritative text, as certain of his discussions seem to be out of date. However, given the authority accorded Cardozo in the legal world one can hardly go wrong starting out with this book.

Required Reading
Like many first year students in the U.S., one quickly becomes very fond of, and curious about, Justice Benjamin Nathan Cardozo. Cardozo's opinions are written with such convincing and lucid prose that the interested law student can't help but wonder what made this man tick. This short essay explains much of Cardozo's philosophy of legal reasoning and the sources a judge must draw upon when making difficult decisions. It isn't often one has the chance to look inside the mind of a great jurist, especially in his own words. A legal classic.

A classic text that remains relevant to judicial politics
This book reflects the profound intellect of one of the most highly regarded jurists in American history. Despite its age, Justice Cardozo's classic treatise provides insights into the "real" workings of the judicial decision making process that remain relevant to a modern analysis of American jurisprudence. His exploration of the motivations, ideals, and even prejudicies of judges serves to demystify this crucial aspect of the legal system. His insights into "legal realism" provide an appreciation of this judicial approach and offers an understanding of its underlying rationale, as well as an argument for its continued utility for modern jurists. Most importantly, he strives to make the judicial process comprehensible and, even, approachable to the non-practitioner of law, as well as law students, thus attempting to make public law, truly, "public."

On the Cessation of the Charismata: The Protestant Polemic on Postbiblical Miracles (Journal of Pentecostal Theology Supplement Series, 3)
Published in Paperback by Sheffield Academic Pr (1993)
Author: Jon Ruthven
Amazon base price: $29.95
Average review score:

Scholarship on the side of the Charismatics?
It's ever so true. Mr. Ruthven who is a professor at Regent University has written a scholarly response to the cessationist that demands to be read. Even if one does not believe that the Charismata is for the present day church of Christ, one must still accord the respect due to this polemic.

For too long our theologians have been influenced by the cessationism of John Calvin and Benjamin B. Warfield. Though dead, these two have had an influence upon the majority of the church. Due to the scholarly presentation of anti-cessationist literature, Christians have very quickly embraced this anti-scriptural viewpoint. The cessationist viewpoint has effected other areas of the Christian's devotional life such as confidence that God will interven in answer to prayer, the need for guidance, etc.

Ruthven has done an excellent job of refuting the cessationist viewpoint from the level of a scholar. Yet, Ruthven does not refute this error through scholarship alone but deals with the most important aspect of proving the truth that the Charismata is available today - the Scriptures themselves.

I highly recommend this important work. Get it today if you can find it.

A long overdue anecdote to Warfieldism
In this book, Ruthven systematically and carefully refutes a sacred cow of American protestantism that should have been put out to pasture a long time ago - namely the B.B. Warfield philosophy. Warfield's ideas have seemingly been uncritically accepted by many theologians over the years. Few, if any, have taken the time to apply his own standards to his theological system to find out if it stands. Ruthven does the job masterfully in this book and shows not only the errors of the classic Warfield/cessationist view from a Biblical standpoint, but also rightfully points out that Warfield appealed to history (and therefore experience) in an attempt to support his position. This is significant in light of the fact that so many who accept this Princeton theologian's arguements claim that they "go by the Bible alone, never by experience."

Outstanding
Ruthven has presented an outstanding response to the argument set forth in B.B. Warfield's early 20th century classic "Counterfeit Miracles."

Thiose interested in the cessationist debate would do well to read Warfield's book along with Ruthven's more than competent response.

Original Sins
A fine, balanced, insightful, scholarly survey of Zionism and its dark side. This Israeli scholar issues an effective call for readers to take a more enlightened stand on an issue often clouded by ignorance and (anti-Palestinian)racial prejudice. As a former relief worker in the Middle East, I heartily endorse Prof. Beit-Hallahmi's book as an introduction to clear thinking and action about the realities of Palestine/Israel and other, broader, issues. As a professor of social ethics, I find this book well documented and well researched, bringing light to a question which often generates only heat and darkness.

Not Balanced...Just the Truth!
This book is remarkable. It ranges widely but is quite incisive! Covering about 200 years of Jewish life with special attention to the Zionist movement and the State of Israel.
Despite the title, it is not the breast beating of a bleeding hear liberal. It just states that facts and examines the arguments and concludes with a way forward.

True, he probably dwells too much on the "failures" of Zionism. (Zionsim failed to work as intended, that doesn't mean necessarily that it failed.) One might want to compare Tom Segev's ELVIS IN JERUSALEM assessment.

The chapter on religion is worth the price alone! He disentangles the groups like Gush Emunim, the Kach party, Agudat Israel, and Neturei Karta, which tend to get lumped together. Along the way the does much to give the lie to Israel Shahak JEWISH HISTORY, JEWISH RELIGION which sought to lay the sins of Zionism at the doorstep of "Classical Judaism." On the contrary, even today, there is an strong negative correlation between orthodoxy and zionism in Israel.

As for anyone who wishes to question his discussion of religious groups, I would like to point out that religion in Israeli life is a Dr. Beit-Hallahmi and his previous book DESPAIR AND DELIVERANCE deals with this very subject.

Well reasoned and disturbing critique of Zionism
This Haifa University Israeli scholar credibly demolishes the myths successfully established by a century of Zionist propaganda. He joins Marc Ellis and Meron Benvenisti(CITY OF STONE)as a courageous "voice in the wilderness" in an Israel where few leaders are willing to acknowledge the massive injustice done to the Palestinian people over the past fifty years. That such a devastating critique of the flawed foundation of a society can come from within it's own intelligentia is, oddly enough, a tribute to Israel and a sign of hope.

An excellent overview of physics for Qualifying Exam Prep
I used this book when I prepared for the qualifying exams. It is an excellent review to get you back up to speed in an organized way on all of the topics covered... Gets you ready for Cronin's "University of Chicago Graduate Problems in Physics, with solutions" The two make a great team. I am now buying them for my students.

Excellent Study Guide for Comprehensive Exams
I like the set-up of the book. Each concept is presented in three parts. The first part is a concise (very concise) summary of concept, the second is problems with worked solutions, and the third is problems with answers so that you can check your work.

This three part combination makes it very easy to quickly identify your own strengths and weaknesses in problem solving; as well as testing your understanding of physics.

Brilliant overview of undergrad physics
This book did the rounds when our 'class' was studying for the comprehensives in grad school. It is an excellent review of undergraduate physics in a concise manner.

Soul of the Law

Average review score:

Is Sanity Possible in a Profession Gone Insane?
A must read for lawyers and law students. Wow! I first read Benjamin Sell's extraordinarily crafted "Soul of the Law" -- part anthropological study, part social commentary, part psychological self-help book -- as a young lawyer fresh out of a judicial clerkship, while searching for a firm job. It blew me away! What a grim portrait of the legal profession; of lawyers; of our legal system. Grim...Yes. But very telling! Had I read this book prior to enrolling in law school, I probably would never have went. With three years of my life invested, and a hundred-or-so grand in education loans to pay back, I deduced that I had no choice but to land that firm job. But the lawyer of today does not have to let his career consume him, the book ultimately teaches us. Purpose and fullfilment are, believe it or not, out there...maybe. "Soul of the Law" conjures the queries: Is it the dysfunctional profession that breeds dysfunctional lawyers, or did the egg come before the chicken? How do these undeniable professional dysfunctions impact the American justice system? Is the profession on a slippery slope to hell, or is there hope? Can a lawyer today lead a quiet, normal, happy life in spite of the profession's dysfunctions? If you're a lawyer, real "Soul of the Law". You'll relate! If you're a law student or a candidate for law school, you'll run for cover!

Best insight into the law and being a lawyer
This book is a must read for anyone who ever contemplates the law or being a lawyer. Especially for anyone thinking about attending law school! Sells, along with Thomas Moore, relates the imaginative language of Archetypal Psychology to the mainstream in this insightful discourse.

It identifies a long needed soulful review of the Law's soul
A timely contribution to the Law. Without soul we are nothing. The pain and loss many lawyers are confronting and the open hostility in the law by consumers has to change. This work is a start of a journey to renew the law's soul. Best Practice may be the bridge between the lawyer and the consumer thereby helping to heal the soul of the law? I would welcome comment on this point.
