This is obviously written by people with great knowledge about a difficult set of subjects. What sets this book apart from others is that the authors present the material in a fashion that everyone can digest and therefore come to understand the very complex issues surrounding global terrorism.
The book fully addressed and shed light on almost 40 topics regarding the war on terrorism. It gave me a greater understand of WHY the U.S. is a target, HOW al Qaeda operates, WHO bin Laden is, HOW the US and its allies can and are responding.
Ever wonder about the history of the Arab/Israeli conflicts?, the history of the conflicts in Northern Ireland?, what makes al Qaeda different from other terrorist groups? ...its all in here, and then some.
The book lists more more than 40 terrorist groups operating trhoughout the world, what their "cause" is, and the their bases of operation. It identiifes terrorist orgranizations on each continent, and by country. It gives some detail and information about states that sponsor terrorism, and the complex politics involved in each case.
Overall, the book is a "must read." It really gave me a clearer understanding of the global politics in play when it comes to the issue of terrorism.
Great detail and facts about:
What IS terrorism -its defined in many ways, this book clarifies why different countries and even different parts of the US gov. define it differently.
The al Qaeda organization and its global reach,
Terrorist operations in: Africa, Middle East, Europe, Latin AMerica, Asia, etc.
Terrorism and International Law
and it even presents a balanced viewpoint on the hot issue of Civil Liberties.
Overall- I give it 5 stars, and that's because I couldn't give it 6.
To the authors -GREAT job!
issue of international terrorism. Unlike much of the coverage
of the tragic events of September 11th, and of
other terrorist atrocities in the past, it provides a scholarly, but highly accessible, account of the wider context of these events, including the history of terrorism and the search for a working definition of the term.
It also provides a concise history of the major terrorist organisations, and also clearly lays out the range of possible responses in the international community to the threat
of terrorism. This book packs a great deal into a relatively
small, and very readable, format--take the time to read it and you will not only be better informed, but also provoked to think more deeply about this crucial contemporary issue.

This is the first book that I have read, (and I read many books!) that stressed finding that creative side again, as we were when we were children. I felt your energy come through, throughout the entire book. Your message also taught me how to use my mind to form associations-therefore giving myself more options, which in turn would cure me of that helpless feeling that I sometimes feel.
It was interesting how you tied in genetics to the equation (DNA)..I am very close to my family, and they do have a major influence in my life. My parents, as well as my brother, and my friends, all impact my high concept.
My major concern at this time is working a field that promotes the Spirit. For so long, I have felt restricted in the choices that I have to find a new career. Your association exercise helped here. I enjoyed filling out the high concept exercise.
Perhaps the most difficult exercise for me was to write down my most defining moment. Maybe it's because I don't feel that I have reached that point yet, or maybe because I couldn't pinpoint my "most important" anything at the time. This book carries over into my personal relationships as well.
Your book is better than "self-help" books, in that it is practical. I truly believe that one is a product of what they read--and your book has definitely had a positive effect and influence on me. I have already recommended your book to four of my friends. If it weren't for the title, I may have overlooked it. I'll keep referring to some of the chapters, as I need them.
Thanks again for writing this book and sharing your brilliant ideas and way of thinking with others!

The book is divided into seven chapters, "Thought and Character", "The Effect of Thought on Circumstances", "The Effect of Thought on Healthy and the Body", "Thought and Purpose", "Thought as a Factor in Achievement", "Visions and Ideals" and "Serenity". In chapter 1, Allen writes, "(you) contain within yourself that transforming and regenerative agency by which you may make yourself what you will" (pg 25). One shapes one's own character by the controlled application of thought, will and action. In chapter 2, "...the outer conditions of your life will always be found to be harmoniously related to your inner state" (pg 32). People who love themselves, attract love from others; people who believe they can be sucessful end up causing their belief to come true and being sucessful. Skipping ahead to chapter 7, he writes that serenity is the effect of "see(ing) more and more clearly the internal relations of things by the action of cause and effect, we cease to fuss and fume and worry and grieve, and remain poised, steadfast, serene" (pg 85). When we come to realize that everything we want or fear has certain causes and that to a great extent we have control over those causes, we ceased to be frazzled by external circumstances because we sense a tremendous locus of power within our ownselves to shape our lives, to be the cause of those effects we desire and to stop being the cause of those effects that cause us suffering.
A great book that probably requires some unpacking by the reader given that it is so concise. Highly recommended.

The language is kept fairly high-level, and most of the explanations are clearly written--if a little terse--with a fair number of tables and charts making the book accessible for both novices and more advanced users alike.
Since there are scant few books out there that are specifically dedicated to IP administration, this book exists as a viable option for system admins and curious readers.

The book is well organized into chapters each focusing on the life of one individual artist. The author skillfully and humorously connects information about artists' personalities, preferences, and lifestyles with how they affected their most well known artworks. It recreates each one's position in history, telling how the artists were seen by the general population in their day, or even their reputation among curious or superstitious neighbors. Readers will be able to see for themselves that famous artists were real people who did mess up once in a while. The author explains a time when Leonardo Da Vinci decided to try out a new painting method, saying, "The technique resulted in disaster...(he hadn't read all the way through to the part that said "don't try this on walls")."
The author's voice helps compliment the content in several ways. Kathleen Krull's words strike a tone that is warm, chatty, and friendly, making you feel as if she were talking with you in the same room. Her gossip extends not only to the basic facts but also to many specific details abou the artists' lives. Showing the passion and tragedy in his life, she remarks about the artist Vincent van Gogh,"Van Gogh imposed a condition of near starvation on himself and would go for days without food so he could afford to buy art supplies." In addition, every sarcastic or humorous comment made on the part on the author helps readers to feel they are getting to know an actual person rather than a cold, vague historical figure.
The author also ensured that the book would appeal to an audience of both children and adults. The words and explanations are engaging and humorous and immediately capture your interest, yet the vocabularly is not too difficult for children. The full-page color illustrations are vivid, clever, and bring to life each artist for the young and old alike. Because the book gives more information about each artist than is generally known, it is sure to benefit and interest a wide range of audiences.
Readers of all ages will definitely become hooked on this fact-filled and entertaining biography. Lives of the Artists: Masterpieces, Messes (and What the Neighbors Thought) retells the one of a kind stories of each of the world's most famous artists, blending historical facts with humor and captivating details. Most importantly it allows readers to recognize each individual artist through an attractive mix of their achievements, lives, and unique personalities.

Just like Peanuts characters, and others with whom we, or our children, grew up, Arthur's looks have changed over the years. What a great classroom discussion these changes could prompt! I could envision this discussion taking place, with more mature reasoning, from first to sixth grade, and I wouldn't hesitate to use the book as a writing springboard in those same grade levels.
When I first saw Arthur in his present incarnation, I thought he was some sort of a mouse. He's actually an aardvark. He looks more like an aardvark in the earliest book. That's the problem: Arthur doesn't like his long aardvark snout.
His family loves Arthur and his nose. But the kids at school, who are all different types of animals, sometimes make fun of his nose, so Arthur decides to change it. He visits a rhinologist (who is a rhino, of course), and tries out different pictures of noses. Would he be happier with a rabbit's nose? A chicken's? An armadillo's?
Finally, he decides to stick with the nose he's got.
It's a great message for any kid who feels a little different. But, look at Arthur today. What happened to that long snout? No matter, he's still my favorite. As author Marc Brown put it in the first book, "There's more to Arthur than his nose."
