Serenity distilled
The original blueprint to create a Japanese garden filled with empty spaces, quiet, calm and tranquillity. I enjoy simply reading and rereading the detailed instructions which send my mind travelling along paths of gardens I've yet to see or create. Happy gardening.

Once in a millenium...
The editorial comments on this book can hardly do it justice.
Not only does this book give you a clear, up-to-date translation of probably the earliest practical garden handbook, a treasure in itself, where those instructions remain relevant to gardening generally and japanese gardening in particular today - you get the result of an extraordinary cooperation between east and west, namely the attention, erudition and dedication of these two thoughtful and careful authors. In addition, you get almost 150 pages of a detailed, yet clearly comprehensible, well illustrated and very readable introduction to japanese gardens, their influences and the sakuteiki itself. If you have ever felt the coffee table japanese garden books are too vague and the academic books too turgid this book majestically spans and outshines both genre - Buy it!

Great resource for research
I have used this book several times for a quick reference, more thorough reviews and as a bibliographic source. It has been invaluable in all respects. In most cases it was the only reference I could find on discinplinary history or aspects of that history.

For readers of history, for people interested in the Earth
I am the editor of the book and just want to put in a good word so people might know what to expect from it. First, it is two volumes, long and richly detailed -- so it's worth the price. The authors --all 140-- are very well informed on their various geosciences but also on their histories. How was the geological column unravelled and where did those names come from? How have storms or northern lights or ocean currents been understood in different times and places? How did our expansion into space affect our understanding of the Earth? All of these stories and many more are told in these volumes in ways that both inform and challenge. These stories are also authoritative reflections of the "state of the art" in history of Earth Science. So if you are a student or a professional historian of science, these volumes provide a basis for further research. There is a "Guide to Resources for Research in the History of Geosciences". An alphabetical index includes over 2000 people who have contributed to geoscience, including their full names and birth-death dates in most cases.

I would appreciate hearing from anyone who would like to know more about "Sciences of the Earth" or about this field in history.

Sharpening the Sword

Amazon base price: $25.00

Expensive but worth the cost...Innovative thinking here
I am in the midst of some pretty expansive research on innovation in national security (at MIT) and after doing a search came upon Sharpening the Sword. With a bit of trepidation I paid the $25 and was pleasantly surprised to find what was inside the compendium. It addresses things as important as the unified command plan and prescient as unmanned aerial vehicles. Only part I didn't really enjoy were the sections that were Service specific. But overall an exceptional volume and well worth the cost.

On target & timely
The editors and authors of "Sharpening the Sword" have achieved what few others have lately --- they manage to carefully and critically treat the questions of innovation in national security with an eye to the future. From the foreword by former Deputy Secretary of Defense John White to the last article on privatizing peacekeeping -- these are fresh new thoughts from experts who are looking ahead.

Wonderful Book!
My 6 1/2 year old LOVES to read this book! The riddles are funny and easy to understand. Each page has about 10 words to read so it's not too challenging but not too easy either(my son becomes frustrated with too many words per page). He also loves to tell these riddles(jokes)to family and friends. Pictures are silly looking not scary at all. Highhly recommended.

Be Prepared To Hear These Jokes A Lot!
My 4 and 6 year olds love this book. It's great easy reading for them and they love the punchlines! Even Grandpa laughed!

The Story Of Metal Trading
Published in Paperback by Metal Bulletin (2003)
Authors: Helmut Waszkis and Peter Marc Waszkis
Amazon base price: $40.00
Average review score:

The Story of Metal Trading
An excellent, authoritative book that covers trading in ores and metals from ancient Phoenicia to contemporary London and New York. Unlike many histories, this one is written from the inside out; both authors are experienced metal traders. They know the business. But they also bring to their task the historian's craft. The book is carefully composed and supremely well documented. It is also written with panache; their entrepreneurial energy enlivening their prose. Highly recommended.

The Story of Metal Trading
Since the discovery of metal in ancient times, metal trading was an important element of everyday life, just as it is today. Where would human civilisation as we know it be without metal? The Story of Metal Trading, chronicles the development of the profession of metal trading since man discovered metal some 8,000 years ago, and charts its history through the ages right up to today's modern, global trade.
The Story of Metal Trading covers these questions and more:
·What was, and is, metal trading?
·Who are, and were, metal traders?
·Where did metal trading originate?
·When did crucial events take place?
·How was, and is, metal trading done?
You will discover: how and why the profession of metals trading developed originally, the importance of metals trading to civilisation through the ages, how the key players in the last century shaped the profession into what is today and see how the industry is likely to develop through the 21st century.
Starting with the history of how traders facilitated the making of bronze, this new book chronicles the development of the metal trading profession from every geographical and metal category angle:
·How the Greeks mined silver
·The role the Phoenicians and the Romans played
·The early German lead and silver merchants
·The Fuggers controlling the world's copper and
silver trade
·How American silver inundated Europe
·How the Industrial Revolution was started
by metal traders
The roles played by companies such as Vivian, Younger & Bond, British Metal Corporation, Metallgesellschaft, Aron Hirsch, Beer, Sondheimer, Philipp Brothers, Hochschild, Associated Metals, Glencore, Rio Tinto, Rothchilds, Anglo American Corporation and many, many more, are all chronicled and their importance, historical and current, to the metals trading industry, noted in this amazingly comprehensive history of your profession.

The best book of its kind on the market.
The Feldmans have brought an epidemic into the light of public scrutiny, but this book is not a "heavy read." You cannot miss the honest affection that lies beneath the surface in their interactions with patients. By drawing from a wealth of anecdotes and clinical experience, they compellingly describe a wide range of mental disorders.

Psychiatrists such as these are hard to find. They are remarkably attuned to the needs of the human spirit. I was particularly intrigued by their assertion that in order to communicate with a psychotic patient, it is often necessary to go along with his delusion. When I read the story about Moses, a schizophrenic patient of "Mrs. Dr. Feldman", it all made perfect sense. Few psychiatrists would be willing to publicly endorse this practice, but the Feldmans are willing to do whatever it takes to heal their patients, and I admire their chutzpah.

This book made me laugh, cry, and think. Reading and re-reading it sure beats the cost of a therapy session. I loved it.

Incredible descriptions of how people think
This reading of this book is not to miss. For any health professional interested in understanding more about the people behind their patients, please pick up this book and read it until the end. It really helps you understand the distortions people have usually in the more severe ways. However, as a physician you are able to understand how and why your patients may act and react. Personalities are very difficult to understand until you have read this book. It even allows the practioner to understand one's ownself in terms of personality. It delves into a majority of psychiatric conditions which seem to be more and more prevalent in our society. I feel they are more prevalent because people, practitioners and patients have a better understanding. Why does someone think in a certain way- read this book. It is easier to understand why people do certain things. It also proves to me that psychiatrists are being truly underutilized. I am so glad that I found and read this book. Bravo to Dr and Dr. Feldman for a truley great book.

A MUST READ FOR ALL INTERESTED IN JUVENILE JUSTICE
I highly recommend that this book be read by any person interested in solving the problems of youth crime. In this excellent, yet disturbing, book, Elikann discusses many relevant topics relating to, as the subtitle of the book describes, the "demonization" of our children by the law.

In exploring these topics, Elikann does not rely on his own opinions. He appears to have carefully researched the subject of juvenile crime and punishment and is evenhanded in his presentation of substantive quotes from many well-respected sources, representing opinions from all shades of the political spectrum.

I would make it a law that this book be read by every member of Congress and every member of every State Legislature BEFORE being allowed to vote on any bill that might impact juveniles. Maybe, these lawmakers would understand that the way to solve juvenile crime is not to declare war on juveniles, but to declare war on the causes of juvenile crime - poverty, ignorance, and abuse.

Unforgettable. Buy it, promote it and use it
From Library Journal July, 1999 "Superpredator" is the chilling name currently given to the most severe juvenile offenders. Can they be saved? Is it right to lock them away for life? What went wrong? Elikann, an attorney, Court TV commentator, and chair of the Criminal Justice Section of the Massachusetts Bar Association, writes that these youths can indeed be helped, offering a 15-point plan based on intervention, strengthening families, rehabilitation, and role models. Chapter 5, which eerily connects with the reasons behind the Littleton shootings, merits extra attention. Elikann argues that there is no such thing as a motiveless crime and deals with the role shame and disrespect play in retribution. This book is well researched, straightforward, and unforgettable. Buy it, promote it, use it in discussion groups. Recommended for all libraries.

Rebuilding Our Ethics Through Trust
Dr. Jane Goodall and Dr. Marc Bekoff have compiled ideas, stories, experience and much more about living a humane and ethical life into a book accessible to all. As the animal protection community has done for 50 years, this book shows that humans must respect the environment and all life if we, as a species, expect to survive. It is a very simple premise yet humanity has yet to catch on. The Ten Trusts not only gives us a path to follow, but it shows how others have acted before in trying to alter destructive patterns. Caring for others (animals, humans and nature) is not something radical, it is - humane! It is something everyone must do.

Goodall and Bekoff share their experiences from living a life of compassion and a boundless ethic. Few people are as well known and respected as Jane Goodall, but she has never rested on her fame. Instead, she stepped away from her field research and beloved friends in Gombe National Park, not to build monetary wealth, but to share her wealth of knowledge with young and old alike through lectures and programs such as Roots and Shoots. While Bekoff has spent years educating a more humane youth at the University of Colorado, all while helping us to better understand and appreciate animal behavior.

Over the last two years the Bush administration has systematically deconstructed even basic protections for the environment in order to please corporate greed. The Ten Trusts talks about many issues, one of which will certainly reappear following recent elections, is the drilling for oil in Alaska's ANWR. Even though the American public is opposed to destroying the last pristine environment, the Administration hopes to lull us into a belief that it is needed.

This does not have to be. Goodall, who revolutionized how humans think about other species through her work with chimpanzees and Bekoff, who is a leader in showing us that the minds of animals are as unique and complex as ours, have concisely gathered a wonderful set of ethics into an easily readable book. A book that everyone should read because it shows how we really can and MUST be compassionate.

A moving, enlightening, reaffirming book.
This is a wonderful book, filled with information and perspectives from which everyone will benefit. I recommend this book to "the converted" as well as to those who are unsure what all the vegetarians and animal-rights people are going on about. It's not a preachy book and it's not purely for animal lovers or "tree-huggers" -- it's a book for any human who cares (even slightly) about how his or her life affects other lives--the life of the planet and the lives of the animals (including humans) who live on it. I cannot imagine anyone who could read this book and not be affected by it. It's also very encouraging to read about the success of Ms. Goodall's Roots & Shoots program -- hopefully, the generations touched by her knowledge will do a better job than we have.
