For us it has become part of our daily down time of tea and devotional reading. The prayers are nearly straight from the Bible but organized and expressed in such a way that they feed and elevate our souls. And the additonal writings about how to incorporate and enjoy praise in all of life is amazingly insightful and real.
At this moment I'm buying 10 more of these little gems to give as gifts to friends.

Much of the writing is equally good: obviously all these authors are excellent writers.
Some of the stories were compelling, some were mildly entertaining. None were awful.
However, this book is uneven. I have a hard time imagining that any one person would love all these stories. Some of the stories suffer from being so short, and others are just not that interesting.
I loved Moon Over Miranda and Mary Jo Putney's reworking of the King Arthur tale.
Five stars for concept and two of the stories. The other stories were all 3-star and 4-star in quality, so I'm averaging it all out to be four stars.

fifty-something.
This little book with its' practical no nonsense
approach to life and lifestyles can be read again and
again.
Enjoyable, exciting, and enlightening.
I recommended the book to my bookclub, In the Company of My Sistah (Northern Califonria).
1. "When you're casual about life, you'll end up a casualty."
4. "If you stand for nothing, you'll fall for anything."
8. "Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift. That's why it's called the present."
Some readers may think such sayings are "corny" or "obvious." Quite true, there is very little "new" in this little book. For me, many of what Beckford calls "affirmations" are really "reaffirmations" of what I already knew but seldom consider. I plan to re-read this book periodically. Also, I will continue to give copies as a gift to friends. But not to all my friends. Nor only to those "in the second half of life." Rather, to those who will be receptive to what Beckford shares so generously. One final thought: Many (most?) residents of retirement communities -- and especially those in assisted living facilities -- will derive great benefit from reading this book. If you have loved ones among this group, you should seriously consider giving this book as a gift to them. Just a thought....

Here he is writing about his dogs and in particular a dog named Cookie, a female who served as his lead dog in the Iditarod and also was mother to many of his other dogs. He starts with the birth of her last litter of pups and goes on from there. Some of the most striking anecdotes show just how intelligent and sensitive these animals are: one of the other dogs teaching the puppies how to get all of the meat out of the skull, and Cookie herself seemingly forcing a pack of dogs to go back and help her owner when he has to let all of them go in order to extricate himself from a predicament.
In the end, they both have to give up running, and of course humans live longer than dogs, so we know how it ends: sadly but poignantly, as the author says goodbye to someone he obviously considers a friend.

Each chapter offers lyrical insight on what it means to be human. Read about cutting an onion in "The First Session" and you'll never take an onion for granted again. "Wave Breast and Heave Shoulder" is one of the most beautiful and biblical passages in the entire book. I have read the final pages of "The Burning Heart" many, many times and never fail to be moved. Some sections of the book are reminiscent of Annie Dillard's descriptive style in Pilgrim at Tinker Creek or some of the best of M.F.K. Fisher's writings. Capon's salty observations balance the high spirituality, creating a complex blend of philosophy and kitchen craft.
As Capon himself says, "We were given appetites, not to consume the world and forget it, but to taste its goodness and hunger to make it great." This book continues to inspire my writing, my cooking, and my spirituality. If you want a flavorful literary feast, buy The Supper of the Lamb. I highly recommend Robert Farrar Capon's other books as well. Each one is a treasure.
Capon is a true wild man. He has become one of my favorite authors (His book Between Noon and Three is one of my top ten). "The Supper of the Lamb" is earlier, yet vintage Capon.
The book is indeed a cookbook. It is also so much more. What the reader will find here, besides the recipes, are reflections on life and reality. The theme of Ferial cooking is transferred to a kind of manifesto on Ferial living. Capon sees food, and life as well, through a lens of wonder.
Capon's book is really a recipe for living life more fully. While his recipes for food are great, it is this "larger" recipe that holds the greatest appeal for me.
I recommend "The Supper of the Lamb" to you with all my heart.
