Now printed as Langenscheidt Pocket Grammar
Too bad the Cassell's Contemporary Italian/French/Spanish/German series are now out of print. I have them all the they are the best grammar books I own. I am a language buff and own several grammars and these can't be beat! I had been looking for the Cassell's Contemporary Italian recently and discovered the Langenscheidt Pocket Grammars are the Cassell's Contemporary series in new editions.

A most helpful handbook
I purchased this book while studying German at a local university. It was a real help to me. What the text book does not cover, this handbook does. If you are serious about studying German, then you need this handbook.

Definitive book on Celtic art history
As a Celtic artist I'm always on the search for books speficially on Celtic art, not just the Celtic people in general. This book by the Megaw's is the best I've found yet, giving lots of impartial information without romantic colorings about 'mystical meanings' and such. Just a great overview of how the art style is thought to have evolved, how it changes throught history, and lots of great photos. And a word on the photos of artifacts... many of these photos are 'new', in the sense that they're not the same ten images you see in every other book about the Celts. New photos of new artifacts not often shared with in publications. Great for Celtic artists who enjoy checking out ancient artifacts to use as source material and to track the evolution of its design and patterns!

Excellent Chronological Book!
I enjoy this book a great deal because it includes history, art, timelines, and discoveries in the Celtic civilization. There are several maps that describe the Evolution of the Celtic Empire and its power before the rise of the Roman Empire. It talks about the beauty of the iron work that the Celtics created and the complicated knotwork designs that are very popular in Scotland and Ireland today. This book will give you a great overview of the Celtic Culture, I greatly recommend it!

Changing Light: The Eternal Cycle of Night and Day

Transformative Poetry and Prayers -- Very Accessible
Ruth Gendler has collected together some of the most accessible and beautiful poems ever written. Her collection is eclectic, international, and both spiritual and "light." This is the one collection of poetry that I give as a gift to people who read poetry only rarely. They always find their eyes opened by the freshness of Gendler's selections. The book follows the progression of a day from daybreak to night, which gives the book both cohesion and progression. Her art is sprinkled throughout the book, and it enhances the mood, without becoming intrusive. Really an excellent choice for yourself or as a gift.

A celebration of the rhythms of the day.
Gendler has given us a great gift by gathering together a magical collection of poetry, prose, haiku, and prayers coupled with evocative abstract images of dawn, day, evening, and night. One marvels at the universality of themes repeated by so many voices through the centuries. This is a book that needs to be shared with special friends who will appreciate its beauty and reverance for life.

Chasing the Panda
An Adventure Story From the 1930s featuring a rich American widow, a young Asian-American, & the first panda to be caught alive.

An Eclectic Escape, and in Non-Fiction
Kiefer provides an eclectic escape that covers nature, people, politics and history...and all within the confines of a true tale! I will never gawk at those cute bears the same way again, knowing the story of their "discovery" and what that story tells us of the specific times--and the general nature of people. The read is "light," yet one learns a bit along the way. This is my version of a nearly perfect summer read. A romantic "novel" for thinking persons.

Just right for my 1st grader
When my first grade daughter began to express real/serious interest in taking communion, I knew I had to get on the stick and think about what to do. (In the Presbyterian church baptised children may take communion.)

My thinking was I was OK with her taking communion, if she could convince me that she understood that it was not a "snack" and really understood at least the idea tbat communion is a rememberance of Jesus.

I started looking about for books to assist me (and her) in talking about the subject. This book is really oriented to assisting kids in understanding a typical Presbyterian (traditional)Sunday service. Each page or two explains a different element of worhsip, for example the creed, Lord's Prayer, Gloria, hymns and sermon. The sacraments of baptism and communion are covered in the same brief fashion.

The illustrations are apppealing and the explanations of each part of a typical worhship service were simple and engaging. The language is right for reading to a 1st grader. Some second or third graders could probably read it (mostly)unaided.

I see this as a very good book for parents to use with their kids in talking about the different parts of worship and their meaning. The brief discussion of communion was very helpful in talking with my daughter.

This book is focused on "traditional" worship styles. Families who attend "contemporary" services might not find it as useful. While the book is written by a Presbyterian author as an aid to Presbyterian families, I suspect that members of other protestant churches would also find it useful.

I can highly recommend this book to parents of young school age children.

Excellent resource!
As a pastor of a church with many young children, I find this an excellent resource for families. We give copies to families as a way of helping prepare children for attending worship. I highly recommend this book to churches, families, and as a gift. Well done!

Hot new author writes like Robert Jordan and JRR Tolkien
If you liked Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series or JRR Tolkiens Lord of the Rings, you will love books written by new author Ruth McIntyre Williams. A very exciting read that is also suitable for children.

Clovenstone is a winner. Don¿t miss this book...
Not since I first discovered "The Hobbit" by J.R.R. Tolkien many years ago have I been as engrossed by the creation of a fantasy writer as I have during my initial exposure to "Clovenstone" by Ruth McIntyre-Williams. Succinctly put: "Clovenstone" is a wonderful read. Her landscape is detailed in its reality and her characters are fully drawn. While Tolkien drew upon Germanic and Nordic mythology, McIntyre-Williams cleverly draws on the Celtic mythology of her heritage.

This is a classic quest story starting with the introduction of one lone heroine drawn by her destiny. As the story progresses she is joined by other characters until the questing party is composed of a half dozen characters both human and mythic. There are mages, warriors, little people and shape shifters all coming together for the quest. This 700-page tale of these fascinating folk and how they fare will keep the reader entertained for night after night. The book has a satisfying ending that still leaves the reader hungering for more. Ms. McIntyre-Williams promises a sequel and I for one can't wait.

If you like Tolkien, the Eddings, Anne McCaffrey, Norton, Pulliam or Brooks you will enjoy Ruth McIntire-Williams. This is fantasy for adults. Her language is accurate and phrases well turned.

Collecting and Preserving Plants
An excellent book for anyone interested in the science of preserving plant material. This book explains how to collect, prepare, and mount plants of all types, including moss, lichens, seaweed and mushrooms. The author explains exactly what to do and how to do it in a clear, concise manner. 184 pages, paperback.
I very highly recommend this book.

A good book for people interested in plants and science...
This book tells how to collect, prepare, and mount plants of all types, including seaweed and mushrooms. It tells exactly what to do in a clear manner. It also tells when you shouldn't collect plants. I highly recommend this book. A good book to go with it is "Building Your Own Nature Museum" by Vinson Brown...

Surprising Read aloud
We read this book frequently in our Storytimes. The overlays demonstrate how the colors mix. The optical illusion, is more suited to one on one situations. We leave the book out after storytime so the children can try the illusion. One word of warning about the illusion, it will not work with children who are color blind. It took me 10 minutes to figure out why my red/green color blind cousin could not see the effect. :-P

Will inspire and delight young artists
My 6 1/2 year old daughter brought this book home from the school library, read it with dad and after that still rushed to find me and read it all again. Her delight as each concept unfolded was contagious. The use of overlays made the concepts of mixing colors and printing come alive and sparked her imagination. Each page was a new discovery. This self-avowed young artist said, "We've GOT to get this book, mama!" Congratulations to Ruth Heller for producing a non-fiction work that inspires and thrills the young.

Conflict in the Classroom: The Education of At-Risk and Troubled Students

Very helpful for the regular classroom teacher
This book is a useful mix of theory and specific strategies, of reports on current research and examples of best practices. After reading it I think I understand better the dynamics of conflict in the classroom, and I also have some new things to try in crisis situations. It is a huge and ovewhelming book which most teachers would avoid, so I cut it apart into five sections. I handed the sections to teachers, who read them enthusiastically when they would never have tackled the whole book. It can be read like that, in sections, and not necessarily in order. The content is highly recommended but the format must be made teacher friendly!

The best single-source for working with troubled students!
Long and Morse have written and collected a panorama of articles which collectively define the state of the art in aproaches to troubled and troubling students. This book goes beyond the traditonal to the truly insightful interventions which focus holistically on the child or youth and his struggles within systems. Strategies for regular education and special education teachers are clearly described, and a list of resources in areas from sexual abuse to grief are inculuded. The book begins with a collection of short stories from contemporary literature in an intoduction to the reader into the minds and lives of children who are emotionally disturbed. Conflict in the Classroom has been a classic in the field for 30 years, and this 1996 edition is as worthy of the same honor as its fine earlier editions
