Amazing Book!
This book is a wonderfully told life story of an amazing woman! I couldnt put it down!

A beautiful biography that reads like a novel
This book is, in one sense, the biography of a woman whose family has always lived in Jerusalem but in another sense it is a novel of one woman's life as she grows up, falls in love, gets married, has children, loses her son and child.

It is also a novel of how politics and personal life intersect: here we find Arab-Jewish relations ruptured during the Hebron Massacre only to be re-constituted again after the formation of the State of Israel; here we find Raquela's son killed in one war amongst many; here we see the international aid traded for guns in the refugee camps. And above all, here we see the heartbreak and the triumph of one woman, one Jerusalemite, who lives in her own country.

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Israel and Israelis, be they Arab or Jews or Christian.

reader
I enjoyed this book very much and couldn't wait to finish it to see what happened next. I also learned alot from this book on how the people of that time had coped, had courage, and the strength to try and live their lives. I though of Raquela as an ingretible woman with lots of strenght and mental power.

A Diverse Anthology of Views
No book of the Bible so clearly calls for a women's commentary than the Book of Ruth. Not only are the two central characters both women, but their relationship is the engine which drives the plot and is what accounts for much of our affection for the book. Reading Ruth, edited by Judith Kates and Gail Twersky Reimer is so successful that no one wanting modern views of this book can ignore it.
It begins with the Hebrew text of Ruth, plus the JPS translation, followed by a commentary on selected verses by Ruth Sohn, which sometimes focuses on midrash or spiritual implications of the verse
Next is the heart of the book, 7 sections, each anchored to a single verse. Some are familiar ("For whereever you will go, I will go ....") And others puzzling ("A son is born to Naomi" --- when the son was actually born to Ruth). For each, there are 2-4 essays that deal, in some way, with that verse.
These vary widely; there is no set of controlling parameters for this book. Aviva Zornberg is quite traditional, delving into midrash in a wide ranging attempt to fundamentally characterize the actions of Naomi, Ruth and Boaz. Rebecca Albert is utterly radical, presenting lesbian readings on the relationship of Ruth and Naomi and uses of the story ("less plausible midrashim have been accepted throughout the ages" she notes). Vanessa Ochs expresses her disappointment that Ruth seems to be almost erased: "Is this the Book of Ruth or is it the Book of Naomi?" Looking at the end, she decides it's neither --- the genealogy seems to obliterate all the women. Nehama Aschkenasy has a careful look at how women use language to create a form of power. Marianne Hirsch focuses on this rarity in western literature, such a strong bond between a woman and her mother-in law, bringing in her own positive relationship with mother-in-law. Patricia Karlin-Neumann draws a similarity between Job and Naomi, in how their suffering produces isolation.
And if you were to sample just one essay, read Gail Twersky Reimer's "Her Mother's House". Working purely with the text --- no midrash --- she presents Ruth as establishing another model of "woman's relationship to motherhood" --- Ruth as a woman who doesn't particularly want children, but has one anyhow. Skillfully drawing both on things mentioned (Naomi becoming the foster mother) and things unsaid (there is no mention of Ruth suffering as a result of about 10 years of childless marriage), she makes a compelling case for this reading, contrasting Ruth with Naomi's intense preoccupation with children.
Also included is a short and fairly intense play, based on a women's discussion group focussing on the Book of Ruth, six "poetic movements" and some lovely woodcuts (complete with explanations!). Alas, no index.
This book sets an extraordinary standard for an anthology of commentary on a single book.

A variety of viewpoints on the Book of Ruth
The Book of Ruth is familiar to most of us- we traditionally read it during Shavuot. On the surface Ruth is a pleasant story of a young woman who returns to Israel with her mother-in-law after the deaths of thier husbands. But the very simplicity of the story raises many questions. Until this collection of midrashim - interpertations and extentions of the story to fill in the gaps- that is where the matter lay. Now is it possible to read what contemporary well educated women think about this story and the questions raised. If you've never studied a Midrash, this is a good place to begin. If you have studied Midrashim, you will see how different the prespectives are in this book. Other writings on Ruth are both very old and written exclusively by men. This book is a must for anyone who enjoys studying and values a full perspective.

An introduction to women's midrash
Have you ever read Jewish midrash? How about midrash written by women? Here is an exciting new style/genre of biblical interpretation, which has been developing over the last decade or so. Previously midrash had been written only by men, excluding women's voices. At last women have entered this world, as the introduction says, to "create a room of our own in the house of study." READING RUTH includes 30 wonderful, loving, powerful, essays, each by a different author with a different viewpoint, including women rabbis, teachers, poets and storytellers. Each midrash is a jewel providing a string of jewels for meditation, like a rosary. What makes midrash so unique is that it allows for a creative interpretion, including the development of new folklore, new imaginings of what is possible for the Ruth story. It fills in places in the text where the story suggests these possibilities. For instance the landscape on the road to Bethlehem, or the festivities at the threshing floor. It adds the thoughts, emotions and inner workings in the minds of the characters that hinted in their words. READING RUTH is a marvelous place to begin or expand the study of Ruth, of midrash, of women's biblical commentary, and is highly recommended.

Best cookbook I have ever seen or read!
I'm so glad I was able to find this, my favorite cookbook, on Amazon!!!! When my copy was stolen out of storage about 17 yrs ago, I tried to purchase another copy only to find out it was out of print. I cooked many recipes for my family from this book and I'm so glad to be able to have the recipes that delighted my family so much over the years again in my pocession. I know that the copy I am purchasing today will continue in our family for generations to come.
If someone asked me "which book would you call the ultimate cookbook?" I would have to say this one. I agree wholeheartedly with the other reviewer G.R. Woodring that this book should be back in print so others can enjoy it decades to come.

best cookbook I've ever had
I have a collection of cookbooks and two grown sons....both want to be sure they get that one cookbook - when I'm done cooking. I think I'll buy them each their own copy. It's the most comprehensive, easy to use, basic cookbook. All of your favorite classic recipes are there.

Best everyday cookbook. I can't believe it went out of prin
I have had this cookbook forever. I have never found a cookbook that was this comprehensive and easy to use. Great recipes.

A Story With Staying Power
I read this book as an adolescent; about 21 years ago, and it and "The Saracen Lamp" had a very profound affect on my life and my interests. Well written and stimulating, with extreme lasting power, I have thought of this book every year since I have read it.

I would love to see it back in print. Few books since have imprinted themselves as deeply on my soul.

Haunting and never forgotten
I read this book 20 years ago. It has remained with me ever since. Set on the West Country coast of England, it portrays the setting and the thoughts and feelings of a young girl with fantastic sympathy and eloquence.

a book you'll remember
I read this book more than 30 years ago and remembered it well enough to look it up today. Haunting and touching, it speaks to young girls without preaching or talking down. It's not current or modern, but rather classic and timeless.

This book made me take a better look at myself.
I read every word with anticipation. Shadow Work made me take a look at myself and my past with great benefit. I finished the book weeks ago and the message of it is still fresh with me today.

It's time to fight the shadow and recover your birthright!
Finally, someone has written a book which is easy to grasp and a joy to read that deals with our ultimate struggle as humans to defeat the darkness of our neglected personality. Despite such seemingly heavy content , Dr. Ruth has written a truly optomistic book that kept me in great spirits from page to page! As soon as I finished the book I was ready to start living life on a higher plane, a plane that was meant for human beings from the beginning. Dr. Ruth tackles the difficult topic of the "shadow," which is in essence the totality of our unwanted traits. Every person has a shadow, and Dr. Ruth not only explains all aspects of its nature, but also lays the ground work for bringing ourselves back into light. Perhaps the most refreshing part of the book is Dr. Ruth's insight into the shadows we don't think of so much--relational and organizational shadows! Wherever two or more are gathered, there is shadow. The specific section dealing with today's Church and its shadow is a message that religious circles are in desperate need of hearing. Master this book, and you will learn how to live better and love better!

The Shadow Knows and we'd better find out!
"Only the Shadow knows..." and only Dr. Mike Ruth in his skillfully adept book can aid in one's self-examination of the dark side of the personality known as, The Shadow. Dr. Ruth clearly states that to examine one's shadow side is to summon great inner courage, without it no man can walk towards his complete psychospiritual Self with intergrity and ultimately towards individuation. Dr. Ruth explains how through challenging ourselves to become a redemptive community within our own Self leads us to a psychospiritual maturity where one's indviduation triumphs over all conflicts. Simply put, Dr. Ruth encourages us to seek our Shadow and to learn of its treachery so we can cease our running from it inorder to grow to our fullest both psychologically and spirtually. He calls it 'the walk of life' whereby we walk ever increasingly in our consciousness and less inside the prison of our unconsciousness. Dr. Ruth terms it,'illumination,' and aptly so. Clearly stated, once something is made known to us, chances are it will not influence or frighten us as badly. But this confrontation within the Self takes courage and from this walk emerges 'self-love'. Self-love, according to Dr. Ruth, is love that is critqued by the question,"What is best?" regardless of the feelings one has about the situation. To do what is best is not always easy to do NOR that which makes us feel good. But the act of a true self-love brings great dignity and peace of mind because it is one of the highest callings of God. I encourage all who have begun to examine their shadow to read this book. By making the unknown known to us will enable us to live as examples of courage, intergrity, dignity and love for ourselves and fellowman which is precisely what Christ and the true Church is all about to me.

A great fantasy for any age.
My mother introduced this book to me when I was in third grade, only about 7 years ago, she would read a chapter to me and my sister every night, one night she let me read a chapter by myself while she went to sleep. 3 o'clock in the morning, I finished the book. I hadn't been able to put it down. This book is a wonderful whirlwind of fantasy and magic that even me and my sister, 74 years after it was originally published, absolutly adore. This book is a treasure and I'm glad it is still avalable somewhere for people to find.

Tal was my favorite book
I took this out of the library in the first grade and my mom read it to me at least three times. It was my first "chapter book". I still remember this book 25 years later and I searched for this book for years in used bookstores (it was out of print). Amazon finally has it and I am finally going to order my copy today. It's a big time commitment for whoever will help with the reading but I remember each chapter worked like it's own bedtime story.

TAL
Far-fetched fiction at its best. A magical journey through a strange universe. Perfect for those who do not have established notions about the world or who are willing to put them aside. Noom-Zor-Noom and Millitinkle are reminiscent of Balaam and his talking quadruped. A delightful book of stories nested within stories, nested within stories, nested within stories... Completely new material. It's highly unlikely that one will run into any other storybook quite like this one.

Review from an instructor
As a teacher both in the public schools and as a corporate contractor, I could not advocate this book higher. It has become the course book of choice for my students and is better suited for starting computer users and intermediate level users than ANYTHING else I have found.

As an aid to teaching, for self instuction and at times as a reference for the starting user, this title is invaluable.

Good Place to Start
This is a very good book for novice to beginners who know how to use only the obvious features. This book introduces you to a good foundation of details. As the level of the book is Beginner to Intermediate,as stated on the book itself, you will need to read another book on Office 2000 for Intermediate to Advance skills. But this is a great place to start.

Teach Yourself Microsoft Office 2000 Visually
I feel that this book is the best book for learning Office 2000. It is easy, but has a lot of information. I have never seen a better computer book, and I hope they make more like this. This book is for people who know older Office programs and those who are trying Office for the first time. If you really want to learn it fast and easlly try this book. This book does not waste words or your time.

A moving character driven romance
...Rio Grande Wedding"... is a lovely romance. Molly a widow and a nurse by profession wakes one morning to find an unconscious and injured man on her property. She takes one look at his dark features and realizes that he must be an immigrant farm worker (in the country illegally) who was likely injured during a raid the previous night. She is contemplating calling the deputy when he lets out a heartrending cry for his lost "Josefina". Molly decides to use her nursing skills to heal his wounds rather than turning him in.

As Molly heals Alejandro and searches for Josefina, who is his eight year old niece, a tender and sensual romance blossoms between them. "A Rio Grande Marriage" is a little category romance that is jam-packed with more emotion and sensuality than can often be found in a 350+ novel. Although there is a secondary issue that is handled a bit too easily for comfort I'm betting you'll love this one if you enjoy a character driven romance about lonely, vulnerable people.

A sexy love story with believable conflict.
Alejandro Sosa is in the US for a noble, plausible reason, and my heart went out to him. The author has taken a hero who could have been portrayed as a stereotype and made him a hot, lovable character. The heroine's brother supplied another source of conflict I'd not seen done before--sad, but very realistic. The slow-building sexual tension kept me turning the pages! Great story!

Wonderful as only Ruth Wind can be wonderful
If you love the best of contemporary romance don't miss this book. The writing is superb, the characters real, and the situation gripping. The ending is the type of glow that every reader wants.

Best tutorial for beginners...
Teach Yourself Visually: Flash MX is a book for someone who knows absolutely nothing about Flash MX. By using this book you will be able to get a better understanding and knowledge of the program. It has a lot of cool and colorful images that show you the step by step processes of creating an animation. This book takes you from the beginning to the end of the various procedures, showing you exactly what your animation will look like.
Unlike many of the supposed beginner books, you will get a better enlightenment on this very difficult program. By using Teach Yourself Visually: Flash MX, Flash will almost seem easy. This book is better than any teacher in a classroom because it will allow you to work with the program on your own. This is a total self help book. You will almost be an expert at the basic functions of the program.
But be clear this is a book for beginners only. If you want to go more in depth on the capabilities of Flash MX, you must get a more advanced book.

Brilliant choice if you dont have perfect memory.
Excellent views. Very clear. Best first book.

A Gifted, Honest and Warm-hearted Writer.
Lynn Ruth Miller has the ability to weave magic with her words. She enchants her readers with a positive attitude along with a general joy in the very art of being. Lynn Ruth shares her wisdom in a manner that makes it accessible to all comers. Her look at life is realistic and yet full of hope. If there is a positive side to any situation, she will find it and help you to see it as well. Since reading her book, I find myself reaching for it whenever I am having a particularly difficult day or a sad moment. As I read her words and stories, the veil of melancholy lifts and a smile begins to spread across my lips. I urge anyone who occasionally needs to see the positive side of life in all its simple splendor to spend a bit of time with Lynn Ruth Miller. You will find it is a marvelous investmet.

Wonderfully funny and insightful
Thoughts While Walking the Dog is the kind of enchanting book you'll want to read several times and then keep close by, so that every now and again you can reread one or two of the essays and rejoice in the quirkiness and sad/funny wonders of life..and of Lynn Ruth Miller, an original in a world that badly needs originals. Who else but Lynn Ruth Miller could write the following (a clerk has just offered her a senior discount): "Now I know very well that true beauty resides in your heart and externals are so superficial that every intelligent person immediately ignores them. I firmly believe this WHEN I AM DISCUSSING SOMEONE ELSE." Women will chuckle and perhaps sometimes cry while reading this collection of straight-talking yet subtle renditions of life in our times. Miller is a writer who knows how to touch people's hearts -- and leave her mark on them forever. Highly recommended.

Thoughts While Walking the Dog
Great book for curling up with on a rainy afternoon. Short, humerous stories that will make you smile. This book will have you recalling wonderful memories of your own life while giving you a "warm and fuzzy" feeling. I can't wait to read "More Thoughts While Walking the Dog"
