A more candid, realistic view of the pioneers
First published in 1886, California: A Study Of American Character: From The Conquest In 1846 To The Second Vigilance Committee In San Francisco is a study providing an early history of California and which seeks to provide a more realistic assessment of the state than most. Josiah Boyce found he could not trust many of the historic narratives about the state's founding, and sought a more candid, realistic view of the pioneers. Fact and myth are contracted in an important history which pulls no punches.

William James may not have cared for his philosophy....
....but Royce is a very fine writer, and his book on California history, though penned long ago, makes very interesting reading. At the center of the book is Royce's discussion of Fremont's role in the conquest of California, and the conclusions he draws after interviewing Fremont himself and even showing him parts of this book. Definitely required reading for the student of California history.

Read this book. You won't be sorry.

This book is changing my life.
Ron Hutchcraft's book, Called to Greatness, is changing my life. I am a full-time career missionary, working in evangelism and church planting. Even so, I often struggle with the practical outworking of my greater vision. How do I build a relationship with my neighbor, the other P.T.A. member, the vegetable store owner? Sometimes I am so gripped with fear, I simply cannot speak up when the opportunity is there. Ron's thorough discussion of Paul's prayer, "Open the door, open their hearts, open my mouth" was such a motivator for me. We have 5-10 young people who will be working with us this summer. Ron's book is going to be the text for our "team" meetings and discussions. I am so thankful that Mr. Hutchcraft has written this excellent book which will help every Christian find a more fulfilled life as they rescue lost souls.

Cato's Letters or Essays on Liberty, Civil and Religious, and Other Important Subjects : Four Volumes in Two

Timeless Wisdom of Radical Whiggery
Cato's Letters are a must have for any lover of liberty. They are filled with enough passion, wisdom, and wit to make them shining gems on any bookshelf. The philosophy expounded in these letters is that of radical liberty according to the laws of nature. It is made clear throughout that governments are the servants of people, not there masters. The only just role of government is to protect the life, liberty, and property of the governed, any other role being usurped and explicitly tyrannical. It was this radical philosophy that made Cato's Letters such a huge influence in America throughout the 18th century. Their influence on the Revolutionary generation is rivaled only by John Locke and his Second Treatise of Government. Above all, these letters are classics of reason and resistance. In my opinion, they are the best exposition of libertarian principles ever written.

radicalism at its best
Anyone who adocates capitalism, liberty, freedom, etc. should read these letters. They inspired the American Revolutionaries. They inspired me. I'm willing to bet that they'll inspire you.

Change Your Smile
Published in Hardcover by Quintessence Pub Co (1988)
Author: Ronald E. Goldstein
Amazon base price: $32.00
Average review score:

most comprehensive selfassessment book in cosmetic dentisty
This book is an excellent description of the extensive renge of issues dealing with changing the appearance of a patient's smile. The book is clear about its objectives and is very easy for anyone to read and follow. After reading this book, patients can easily decide whether they are candidates for cosmetic dentistry and get a reasonably good idea of the procedures involved. The author has discussed several treatment options for every situation, and he has included self-evaluations for patients to use in making informed decisions. An introductory chapter of relating the smile to the entire face presents a unique perspective. Dr. Goldstein discusses contemporary interdisciplinary approaches in creating different aesthetic effects. The explanations are accompanied by excellent illustrations that demonstrate the changes possible by procedures in modern dentistry and medicine. Often the patient and the doctors are not on the same page as far as the patient's chief complaint is concerned. This may lead to a situation in which the treatment provided may be superior; however, the treatment did not address the patient's chief complaint, leading to the patient's being dissatisfied. This book may provide the critical link to complete the communication circuit between the doctor and the patient. After reading it, patients can have a better understanding of their problems, the steps required to address these problems, and the advantages and disadvantages of each procedure.Further, details of expenses provide the consumer with an idea of the financial commitment involved. In summary, this 324-page hardcover book with 575 high quality illustrations is the most comprehensive and clear presentation of an important self-assessment tool used in cosmetic dentistry. A must-read for patients, students, and clinicians involved with cosmetic dentistry.......reviewed for the Journal of the American Dental Association by Dr. Pramod K. Sinha, Assistant Professor, Univ. of Oklahoma College of Dentistry, April l99

This is the ultimate consumer guide to cosmetic dentistry
This book lets you analyze your smile and come up with the most practical solutions for whatever smile problem you have. There doesn't seem to be anything left out of the cosmetic problems and solutions to a better smile.....and a more attractive face as well. This is because there are chapters that involve the role of facial plastic surgery, orthognathic(done by the oral surgeon) surgery, and cosmetology. It contains a simple smile analysis in the first chapter and logically helps you understand what your problem or problems are. It is easy to comprehend what your choices are because both the patient photographs and illustrations are so easy to understand. In each treatment summary the author describes not only what the result can look like but more importantly, the maintenance required with each restoration as well as a realistic range of fees and life expectancy. Too often people fail to get what they want mostly because they really don't know what they want, and they don't know how to get it. The best way is to take this book with you to your dentist!!!

Charismatic Gifts in the Early Church: An Exploration into the Gifts of the Spirit During the First Three Centuries of the Christian Church
Published in Paperback by Hendrickson Publishers, Inc. (01 December, 1984)
Author: Ronald Kydd
Amazon base price: $9.95
Average review score:

Ideal for the student or the curious mind
If a scholarly but undersatandable review of the roots and early history of the charismatic gifts is what you seek, this is it! Dr. Kydd combines very high quality research with an equally impressive ability to make the results understandable and relevant. This revision of Kydd's doctoral thesis is perfect for the student of Pentecostalism or Church history, and also relevant to any interested soul who has encountered the charismtic manifestations.

Historical evidence the spiritual gifts continue today
It may surprise some Christians to learn that the gifts of the Holy Spirit did not die out at the end of the first century. Anyone doubting this should read Kydd's thorough investigation into the continuing presence of the gifts of the Spirit during the first three centuries of the Christian church. This scholarly--but by no means arid--study fills a deep need, for the church today often struggles to overcome its luke-warmness while failing to see the clear New Testament importance of the gifts of the Spirit for its daily life. The church began as a "little band of fisherman [and evolved] over the centuries until it [became] one of the dominant features of the Greek and Latin world. The Church grew astonishingly in size, power, and influence." (p. 86) Part of the explanantion for this evangelism explosion was not strategic planning or better schools of training, but, as Kydd says, the presence of Jesus himself and the sending of the Holy Spirit. Kydd offers irrefutable historical evidence that the gifts remained after the New Testament period as absolutely essential ingredients for the growth and life of the church. This work belongs in every thinking Christian's library

An Excellent Parenting Resource
This excellent book offers parents solutions to common problems, as well as tips for positive guidance and effective praise. The program seems to be designed to encourage parents to expand on their current parenting techniques, rather than abandoning current practices in favor of a "new method." It boosts parents' esteem as well as giving tips on how to boost children's self-esteem. It sits on my shelf next to "1-2-3 Magic!"

WINNER, 1997 NATIONAL PARENTING CENTER SEAL OF APPROVAL
The following review was done by the National Parenting Center upon awarding the Common Sense Parenting Book as well as the Common Sense Parenting Audiotape with its coveted Seal of Approval.

"When it comes to reading advice about parenting, what we've discovered is that parents like to be spoken to in a direct, common sense manner. No need to use flowery or highbrowed language, just give me some tips and I'll take it from there. Like the name implies, this book and the like-titled audiotape delivers the goods. Common sense tips and good ideas presented in an easy to read and listen to format. Parents mentioned that they really liked the written exercises which serve to help reinforce what you've learned. Here is a logical sensible approach to parenting, featuring good examples that our parents give a thumbs ups."

Communing with the Uncommon
Published in Hardcover by Xlibris Corporation (27 October, 2000)
Authors: Ronald Hegner, Ron L. Hagner, and Ron L. Hegner
Amazon base price: $32.99
Average review score:

Exceptional poetry
Ron Hegner's book of poetry stimulates the reader with complex prose conveying a wide range of emotions. Longing, anguish, passion, several types of love, and much more are conveyed. Take for example just the titles of these poems: "Holy Grail: Limited Lithograph," "Burial of a Wife-Beater," and "Slipping Past Gabriel."

His prose is rich in imagery, painting moods as well as pictures. When I read his poems for the second and third times, they invoke new thoughts and feelings. The illustrations that accompany several of the poems are also noteworthy. They are tight, minimalist representations of people and the world that make good use of "negative space."

Some songwriters and poets seem to specialize in one particular emotion, almost as if they don't feel qualified to express themselves about any other topic. Ron Hegner is not a specialist.

Recommended to Everyone
Not only were the themes amazing, but the wording was brilliant. Every one of the lines has it's own soul, and all those are pulled together cohesively into breathtaking poems. The different perceptions and lives in this book are expressed in an unexplainable way. Although I tend to associate epic poems with tedious boredom, Hegner's ideas were invigoratingly creative and capturing. I recommend this as something everyone should read, especially those who believe poetry has become a lifeless medium.

Confess-O-Rama

Average review score:

Awesome!!!!!!!!
I cannot even say how much I enjoyed this book. Although I picked it up for my younger sister (10), at 14 I had a great time with it. While not drowning in romance, or that kind of drippy friendship that most new literature is pressing on us these days this book managed to get across the kind of relationship any teenager needs. Insightful, smart, humorous, and an easy read, this is a great book for anyone who feels like they don't belong, are being discriminated against, is an artist, or likes cooking. What an incredible book!!!

Confess-O-Rama is good for the soul.
Koertge is one of America's finest writers of books foryoung people, and Confess-O-Rama keeps his string of hitsgoing. Tony's mother has a knack for marrying men who die too soon, starting with Tony's father and going right through his 3 subsequent stepfathers. Now, as Tony and his mom are recovering from the latest death and living [temporarily?] in West Paradise, CA, Tony meets an unusual group of high school artists and begins sharing his problems with a phone service called Confess-O-Rama, little suspecting that his voice and others will become source material for a performance piece.
