SACRED HEALING - BOOK REVIEW

Recently, I, along with 18 others had the honor and pleasure of spending one week with Ron Mann in an enlightening and rewarding leadership training for my company. During this week we learned the importance of integrating the "whole person", body, soul, emotion and spirituality into the workplace. Ron's tremendous gifts of spirituality were shared with all of us. His book, Sacred Healing was used in part to demonstrate his wisdom, gentleness and strength of character. Ron lives what he teaches. His word is his bond. This book is truly an eye-opening tribute to his faith in God and humanity and the power we all have within to become the best that we can be. During the week we all spent together, we practiced meditating which is described in detail in this book. Meditation, prayer, becoming quiet helps an individual to have a direct relationship with Spirit. It is such a peaceful, tranquil experience that allows one to truly feel connected to something that is much bigger than this life. It is a healing of the soul which is what this book focuses on.

Sacred Healing shares in detail some of Ron's own life experiences, a personal account of his own spiritual - soul growth over the years which serves to enlighten and encourage us all. It speaks of such profound wisdom and truth, guidance and love, eternal peace for anyone who is seeking that plane of tranquility in the world in which we now live. Sacred Healing is an awakening of the Spirit in us all. Allow the Divine to work through each of us. Let "ego" die. When we let God and Spirit "in", life changes. I would encourage all people both on a personal and professional level to read this book and open your hearts to a new life that can bring you to a new level of consciousness. Modern western science still has a long way to go in accepting that God and spirituality play a huge part in the "wholeness" and the healing of the human being. We are really just beginning to touch the tip of the iceberg. Sacred Healing will help to demonstrate how and why this is so very important.

Ron Mann's dedication, perseverance and spirituality reach out to all of us in this wonderful book as well as the seminars that he offers. On a scale of 1 to 10 this book is a TEN!

Deletes para from para-normal & makes"peace & love" real
...In this entertaining and powerful account of spiritual awakening, practice and communication, Ron Mann relates his extraordinary experiences as a seeker, healer and '90s everyman. With the voice of you and me, he tells his stories of experiencing higher levels of awareness and human energy fields, astral and otherwise. This book is a compelling chronicle of finding a higher love, a guru and a way to precipitate profound shifts in the real lives and souls of people in the author's life and psychotherapy practice. Travels through heat, dust and dirt during a spiritual quest to share the love and wisdom of enlightened beings in the ashrams of India; out- of-body experiences while communing soul-to-soul during the healing of an autistic child; Dr. Mann's vivid and clear descriptions show us how these amazing phenomena are integrated into his real, but intensely spiritual life. The impact this expanded dimension of awareness has upon his practice as a conventionally trained clinical psychologist is of special interest to people involved with this profession. Remarkably, while relating riveting tales of personal spiritual explorations, he also manages to reduce esoteric yogic philosophy to a digestible and efficiently organized series of idea-bytes. And makes us see why we need them to understand our own lives and find our own bliss.Dr. Mann's good will and sincere dedication to uplift other searchers shines through this book. The truth and inspiration he offers is a beacon for anyone interested in the changing conciousness described in "The Celestine Vision" and similar messages of hope for humanity's emergence into an enlightened age.

Best Intentions turn out even better
This book was originally conceived and written as an Advent Devotional by the authors but can be used, as I have used it, as a devotional for any period when you need to know that God cares about you and your problems or issues. Written in a personable, practical style, Salt and Light brings a common sense approach to two men's walk with God, and how they are sharing their unique vision with their family and friends. From "the grass is always greener over the septic tank" and the often quoted but never improved on "Pray, read your bible and love Jesus" both men show that you can use this practical guide on many levels, and enjoy growing closer to God with each one.

Wonderful!
This book of devotions is a creative mix of theology, humor, life lessons and real examples of living faith. I recommend this to anyone who wants a book that can make you laugh, make you cry and always make you connect faith with daily living. A good read for the seeker or mature in faith.

Salt and Light
This is such a great devotional. It was very hard to stop at just one devotional. I found myself continuing to read on and I realized that I had gone into another days devotion. But this is ok because I just kept re-reading which is a good thing to do! I have recommended the book and have given copies to others. Their reaction is Thank You so much for such a great inspirational book. It is not like other devotionals, which may not hold your attention, and cause you to reflect on each devotion. Everyone I have talked to that has read the book simply loves the book.

Sauron Defeated: The End of the Third Age (The History of The Lord of the Rings, Part Four) (The History of Middle-Earth - Volume 9)

And so the tale is brought to a close. . .
In "Sauron Defeated", Christopher Tolkien brings to a close "The History of The Lord of the Rings", a subset within his "The History of Middle Earth". Like the previous three volumes in this series, Christopher traces the development of his father's thought as the final chapters of The Lord of the Rings are written. Of special interest are the early conceptions of "The Scouring of the Shire" and the two versions of the never-published "Epilogue". The Epilogue was, to me, particularly touching, as it involved Sam, now a middle-aged hobbit with a houseful of kids, reading to his family and keeping the Story alive.

HOWEVER, the above material, while unable to fit into the previous volume (The War of the Ring), was not enough to warrent a volume all by itself. So Christopher has also included "The Notion Club Papers" -- a space/time/dream travel story, written at the same time as The Lord of the Rings was being developed. The story itself involves Numenor -- Tolkien's telling of the Atlantis saga. Of particular interest to CS Lewis fans, "The Notion Club Papers" purports to be a discussion of (among other things) Lewis' own space travel fiction, penned in the late 30's and early 40's. It's a shame that this story was never brought to completion -- I'm finding the ideas it expresses to be quite interesting.

Again, 5 stars, both for the Master, and for the tireless work of Christopher.

A great job by Christopher Tolkien!
In the ninth volume of The History of Middle Earth and the last dealing with LOTR Christopher Tolkien gives us not only the original ending to Tolien's epic trilogy, but also an essay called the Notion Club Papers, an edition of the Drowning Of Anadune, and information on Adunaic which was one of Tolkien's invented languages. I liked this book very much even though the Notion Club was hard to read at times. Thankfully, this is the last edition dealing with LOTR and Tolkien soon turns again to his father's greatest work, The Silmarillion. I recommend this book to any Tolkien fan.

Another Gem from Tolkien
The title of this book should say it all. Certainly a book designed for die-hard Tolkien fans, 'Sauron Defeated' hardly represents interesting reading for people unfamiliar with the Lord of the Rings series. That said, the thick volume is still essential for anyone who has read the previous three chapters of the History. Although some parts of 'Sauron Defeated' are better off left out in its next edition, it presents enough interesting information in its 482 pages to make it a worthwhile (not to mention impressive) presence in your Tolkien library.

Children finally come with a manual on how to raise them!
I am a parent of 3 teen-age+ children - 2 pre-teen stepchildren and have managed a pre-school program (57 children) for the past 15 years. This is the first method of discipline in the new age that is useful not only for teachers and parents but also for our children. If everyone were to apply R. Morrish's intelligent and common sense methods our future generations would be our pride instead of our sorrow. Our children will benefit greatly from this method of growing up and I will be using it extensively in both my home and my pre-school. Thank you Ronald it is about time we "raised" our children with real workable methods. Parents should be given this book the day they have their first child.

Making discipline make sense
Morrish walks the reader through the 12 keys that truly unlock our children's potential to be responsible and successful in life....I found his approach "parent-friendly" and would recommend it to anyone with children or planning to have children

A must for every parents or teacher
If you are looking for a how to guide for disciplining children at home or in the classroom, this is the book to read. Simple, common sense suggestions to help teach children the value of respect, reason for rules etc...

best so far
I'm going to make it short. I just passed my neo resuscitation recertification because of this book. What makes this book so special is its illustrations (each illustration is worth 1000 words or so)and its flowing text.If you need this type of book, than I believe this one is the best so far on American market; there is one better in Europe and Australia, but they have slightly diferent guidelines which may be better than ours, but hey, maybe one they we get to the point where we have world guidelines. Believe me, I have researched alot to find the best book on this topic, and this book is it. I recommend it to all MDs, critical RNs, neonatal respiratory therapists(RRT-NPS)and other medical staff that is often in contact with little bambinos.

Excellent and Improved Version
Text flows well and I was able to ace the course. Great reference to keep in your locker at work for review, too

Neonatal Resuscitation Made Easy
NRP has been streamlined to enhance the readers learning and retention of the resuscitation guidelines. This book is easy reading...cover to cover! Key learning points are emphasized throughout the book. Each chapter is carefully laid out with case studies to reinforce the content covered. The reader builds on the foundation of the previous chapter(s) thus progressing one from a basic to complex resuscitation scenario. Comprehension questions are found through various points of each chapter with a test at the end of each chapter. The book is excellent not to mention the CD-ROM as an added bonus. Even if you are due to renew your NRP under the old guidelines(through June 2001) this book will provide you with all the information you need to know. Thanks Marla!

Excellent for the new retiree
Just retired and this book answered alot of questions. I always felt that I could manage my investments by myself in retirement. This book makes me realize that I may eventually have to go to a financial planner for help.

Outstanding Retirement Guide
As a financial advisor, I've personally purchased over 100 books to give to my retired clients as gifts. They love it. This book is an excellent guide to retirement finance. It covers almost every concern known to any retiree, for example--how much of your portfolio should be used for income? Their logic and reasoning makes it simple for anyone to understand the economics of living off your portfolio during retirement. The case studies are great--real life examples of life changing financial decisions. Thank you Ron and Murray for such a wonderful gift of your knowledge.

Magnetic Reading
Once I started reading this book I realized how much thought has to go into the retirement proccess. This book starts you off in the right place and takes you through the proccess in exactly the right order. I found the book very easy to comprehend and the charts were very helpfull to illustrate the points that were being made. I have read other books on the subject of retirement and I found that this book is very comprehensive and easy to follow.

Time Among the Maya Travels In Belize Gu
Published in Paperback by Penguin Putnam~trade ()
Author: Ronald Wright
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

Current Reference Work
I read this pretty quickly. There's no problem with knowing what the author is trying to say. I found the representation to be a little full of sad satire and sorry history lessens but then again the reality really has been horrific.

I will hang on to this and use it as a reference. I always find it interesting the way several 1st person accounts of a like place will produce inconsistencies in attitudes and reactions.

Much More than a Travelogue
At first this book appears to be merely a travelogue of Wright's journeys through the Maya areas of Mexico and Central America. Sure, he gives us the goods on the ancient Maya ruins and archeological treasures, plus a lot of great historical coverage, but these turn out to be the background of a much larger narrative. Instead, Wright spends the bulk of his time visiting with the local people, both modern Mayas and non-Mayas who inhabit these regions today. Therefore we get an excellent sociological study on these peoples. I was surprised to learn of the large numbers of Maya that still exist, not just as an ancient fringe religious group, but as a sizeable portion of the populations of Guatemala, Belize, and Southern Mexico. Unfortunately these people still deal with the fallout of nearly 500 years of oppression, and continuing discrimination today. Their resulting hardships are a major focus of the book. Wright also has a flair for picking out offbeat and enjoyable characters among the people he meets, like the nearly-Rasta mestizos of Belize and a variety of befuddled and naïve traveling companions. Wright could stand to be a little less biased at times, especially in the portion of the book that deals with Guatemala. Wright gets really carried away in describing this dreary nation as a hopeless hellhole. This characterization is probably not too far from reality, but impartiality is missing at times in this book. (Note that this was written back in the mid-80's, though it's doubtful if much has changed since then). Also, pictures of the many fascinating areas Wright visited would be a nice addition to this book. You have to rely on Wright's descriptions instead, although he does a pretty good job. Ultimately, this book is less a standard travelogue than an entertaining and very enlightening sociological study on a people who are still going strong even though their culture "collapsed" (in Western eyes) centuries and centuries ago.

Great
A travel book, with culture and policitcs woven in, but not too heavily. Geography, environment, and a collection of characters encountered along the way, a fascinating book on several levels. Also in the fabric of the book is a discussion of how the Mayans keep time, what happened to them as a culture and people, as well as what their future might be. But is it all done with excellent writing, none of it too academic or dry, all interesting, with great writing artistry. A very good book. Simple and powerful. A good read if you have any interest in this area of the world or the Mayans.

The Word of God and the Mind of Man
Published in Paperback by P & R Press (1992)
Author: Ronald H. Nash

List price: $9.99 (that's 50% off!)
Average review score:

Great on Documenting the Modernist Movement
Ronald Nash's work, The Word of God and the Mind of Man, is a mastery and succinct piece of work. It can be read within a few days and the content is very good.

He opens his discussion with what he calls "Hume's Gap" and then moves into "Kant's Wall" (if i remember his term for Kant's theory of the possibility of knowledge correctly). Nash notes their significant importance because their epistemological theories are shown to have influenced men such as Reihnr, Schliermacher, Brunner, and others. For example, Nash notes how their perspective about God consisted of nonpropositional content, and the experience or knowledge of the metaphysical was more of a reliance than a cognitive experience.

Following his discussion of Aristotle's four squares and the modernist theologians, Nash touches upon Augustine's theory of knowledge. This is not by any means an indepth look as his other book, A Light in the Mind: St. Augustine's Theory of Knowledge; but he does explain quite enough to grasp the fundamental concepts.

The next chapter consists of the logos epistemology. This is fully compatible with (and endorsed by) Augustine. The "logos" refers to Jesus Christ, as taken from the opening of John's Gospel. Nash gets into Scripture in detail discussing how knowledge is contingent upon Christ from a Biblical perspective.

Finally, Nash moves to the more recent theologians and philosophers. For example, he discusses the Amsterdam philosophy (e.g. Dooyweerd) and others such as Van Til. It should be noted that Nash was a student of Gordon Clark. Nash uses Clark's argument against Van Til's theory of knowlegde; however, this argument stems from a misunderstanding of Van Til's theory of man's mind being analogous to God's. See Greg. L. Bahnsen's book, Van Til's Apologetic: Readings and Analysis. There are many excerpts by Van Til that discuss that issue and clarify what he meant by man's mind being analogous to God's.

Nevertheless, despite that one problem with the book, I found it quite enjoyable and interesting to see how the modernists were influenced. I recommend this book to anyone interested in philosophy or theology (esp. within the Christian tradition).

Small book, helpful content
This book by Ronald Nash helped me understand some key intellectual history about how the mind of man has been slowly blocked out from theological knowledge. Revelation does provide cognitive content and propostitional truth. Nash points out some of the common logical errors in regard to reason and revelation. He made me comfortable with the integration of reason and revelation. I consider him a helpful teacher and guide for intellectual life and the Christian faith. This author is a teacher and trustful guide.

This book is back in print
The latest edition of this book is once again available from the publisher, Presbyterian and Reformed. It remains the only critical evaluation of theologians who attempt to discredit God's disclosure of true information through special revelation.

Tuition Rising : Why College Costs So Much, With a new preface
Published in Paperback by Harvard Univ Pr (2002)
Author: Ronald G. Ehrenberg
Amazon base price: $13.27
List price: $18.95 (that's 30% off!)
Average review score:

Writing from the Ivory Tower
Tuition Rising is serious disappointment. The entire book is a long-winded justification of why college cost so much. Instead of exploring on a few fundamental social or governmental changes affecting college tuition, the author simply discusses in-depth each expense that schools have. For example, there is a whole chapter on parking and transportation, and another chapter just about cooling systems.

While Ehrenberg rambles on about the minutia of college finances, he never really explains why colleges' expenses rise at a much faster rate than other sectors of the economy. Many businesses must pay for transportation, cooling, and everything else that colleges do, do not have skyrocketing prices.

Tuition Rising does not ever mention the possibility that government financial aid programs have given universities the green light to spend excessively, since many students can get loans or grants to cover the cost increases. College costs are no longer subject to free-market economics, which generally causes prices to be low. In fact, Ehrenberg thinks the problem of college affordability can be alleviate with more federal financial aid!

This book is at best a boring compilation of college expenditures. Worse yet, Tuition Rising makes high tuition increases seem unavoidable, or even justified.

Tuition Rising: Why College Costs So Much
Ehrenberg's insight is amazing and the book is full of important and interesting information. As a parent of a college student, I found the book to be very helpful in explaining why tuition continues to increase at an incredible rate, why college administrators make the decisions they do and how tuition relates (or doesn't) to the quality of higher education. It is a wonderful resource for parents, students and educators, anyone who is interested in higher education. Kudos to Ehrenberg on a job well done!

High school counselor
As a high school guidance counselor I can see the immediate value of Mr. Ehrenberg's book. In fact, it is the best book on the subject which I have read. It should also be of tremendous value to parents of college bound children and to college administrators. The language is highly accessible and the author makes his points clearly and succinctly. This book is a welcome addition to the field, and perhaps the very best of its kind.
