A Valuable Resource
This textbook is a testament to the fact that Richard Bonnie is truly one of the giants in the field of criminal law. Everything this man writes is valuable; the chapters on mental health and insanity alone make purchasing this book worthwhile (Bonnie is an expert on the insanity defense). This book definitely leant itself to rich and provocative classroom discussions. I enjoyed the book almost as much as I enjoyed his class. I would recommend this text to any professor who is interested in spicing up his or her criminal law classes.

You think you know about the evils of plea bargaining?
Do you? Is that what you think?

It's difficult to indict an entire system. And, once you read this rare gem, you'll understand how difficult it is to bring about change to the criminal law system. Nothing has changed about our criminal justice system in the past 20 years, but the inequities remain. What's the worst crime humans commit? The truth that Mr. Orloski points out is that it's actually armed robbery.

Why do district attorneys accept plea bargaining? Is it to conserve resources? No. But, I can't give away all the secrets...you'll have to read this for yourself.

The dedication page reads, "to the women in my life." But, the truth is that this book is dedicated to ALL OF US!!!

Thought-provoking, eye-opening, and harrowing.
Scary stuff. This is not a job I think I could do. I was amazed by the immense variety of family distress situations faced by the court. Judge Ross seems to maintain great powers of objectivity and analysis in the face of a near-constant stream of the most painful decisions one could have to make. I was stunned by some of the descriptions of what many kids before his court endured before they got there. Fascinating book. I hope more are forthcoming from Judge Ross.

Death of British Agriculture: Wanton Destruction of a Key Industry

Authors: Richard A. E. North and Christopher Booker

Average review score:

Essential reading for all who care about Britain
"The fate of agriculture is intimately bound up with the fate of democracy
itself....no civilisation has ever survived the loss of its agricultural
base" concludes Dr North at the end of a most worrying, informed and
penetrating survey of the legislation that has led to the situation British
rural communities now find themselves in.

Dr North knows intimately the ways of successive bureaucracies who have
managed, by a combination of well meaning bungling and carelessly imposed
regulatory burdens, to put British farming at a disadvantage. Although known
to be an energetic and witty Eurosceptic, Dr North does not lay very much of
the blame for the plight of British agriculture at the feet of the EU
Commission. It is, to our shame, Britain itself that has so mismanaged food
scares, EU regulation, the CAP and - especially - the recent animal
diseases.

The book is both depressing and exhilarating. Dr North is under no illusions
about the many sad mistakes to have hit the farming industry but he also has
sensible suggestions for avoiding complete catastrophe. He writes in an
accessible manner which avoids any kind of sensationalism. Far from jumping
on bandwagons, he looks closely and critically at the many conspiracy
theories of recent months and debunks them, seeing much more to worry about
in the narrow self-interests of scientists, big business and empire building
government departments. Criticisms of current farming practices are looked
at very coolly, as are the complaints about unfairness from the
supermarkets. Even MAFF/DEFRA, the department who so grotesquely mishandled
disease control, is dealt with fairly - although he pulls no punches when
looking at, for example, the dirty dealing that led to the loss of so many
British slaughterhouses.

If anyone still wonders why so many thousands of concerned people in Britain
have been calling out for a proper public inquiry into the government's
handling of the foot and mouth crisis they need only read this book. They
will then see the foot and mouth crisis to have been just the latest in a
long line of tragic errors - a final straw that cannot be ignored.

a kick in the pants fun read for lawyers and non-lawyers!
Sometimes people say the darndest things. . .and it happens to oftentimes be in court. A laugh a minute, Disorder in the Court provides hours of reading enjoyment. If it is not dumb witnesses then it's pompous lawyers or snide judges that are making the comments that make people understand why law and lawyers are one of the most joked about fields of work and professions!

Praise for Divorce Lawyers at Work
"Divorce Lawyers at Work offers a rich, vivid account of the changing nature of family law practice. It will be invaluable to those interested in understanding the legal profession and the operation of the legal system, warts and all, in one of the most emotionally fraught legal arenas. It also would be an excellent companion to anyone suffering the travails of a divorce--and an accurate (if sometimes unflattering) mirror for the lawyers who represent them." --Richard L. Abel, Cornell Professor of Law, UCLA

"This is, first of all, a superb study of one segment of the practicing bar--divorce lawyers--but it also addresses a host of questions about the meaning of professionalism and the contemporary tensions within the practice of law. Every scholar of the legal profession must read this book. It also will be of immense interest to almost every practicing lawyer and, indeed, to students trying to find out what the real practice of law is all about." --Sanford Levinson, University of Texas Law School

"How do the demands and expectations of divorcing people in the U.S. intersect with the practice of divorce lawyers? This book offers a learned answer to a question that has occupied much speculation. We now have a comprehensive study to inform our relentless desire to understand how legal practice constitutes the demise of marriage."--Christine Harrington, Associate Professor of Politics, and Director, Institute for Law and Society, New York University

"Mather, McEwen, and Maiman have written an invaluable book for scholars and practitioners alike. Everyday, divorce lawyers face conflicts about how to balance contending demands from clients, colleagues, and courts. In this thoughtful, probing, and important book, the authors demonstrate that the norms of professional collegiality are alive and well--if in multiple and complicated ways."--Carroll Seron, author of The Business of Practicing Law: The Work Lives of Solo and Small-Firm Attorneys

"The topic is of great interest not only to those concerned with the practice of law, but also with broader social welfare interests in the management of the divorce process, and with a sociological interest in the development and pressures on the legal profession. The authors are in the first rank in their field, and write with clarity and authority. Their book is an important contribution to the field."--Mavis Maclean, Director, Oxford Center for Family Law and Policy
