THIS BOOK IS A HARD READ, BUT HAS SOME GOOD INFO
This book is a hard read. It is chockfull of historical research into the contexts of how different theorists came up with criminological theories. It covers control, conflict, and other theories, with an interesting section on feminine crime... This book is very convolluted and hard to follow at times, jumping back and forth between history and theorists...it needs to be made more clear and concise, and to make up whether it wants to be a book of theory or history. Also, the slanted views of the writers in favor of conflict theories is too obvious. Also, it should be used more for graduate study than undergraduate. If you have the time to decipher it, it has some interesting information in it. It is a small book, and perhaps this is why some of the theories were glazed over with little explanation or practical reviews. It is a decent book, but it should be made more accessible to the non-expert mind.

social context
The previous reviewer missed the point. Criminological theory should be studied with an appreciation of the social context (i.e., history) in which the theories were developed and extended.

Nazi Justiz
Published in Hardcover by Praeger Publishers (1995)
Author: Richard Lawrence Miller
Amazon base price: $52.95
Average review score:

Nazi Justiz
Nothing original in the book. The author borrows mostly from Raul Hilberg's "Destruction of the European Jews"---published in 1961, but remaining one of, if not the, seminal works on the Holocaust. Many of the "stories" of Nazi perversions in administering the law have been recounted in other works such as Ingo Mueller's "Furchtbare Juristen" which is far better researched and written. "Nazi Justiz" is not worth reading, much less paying [a lot of money] for. Get a used copy of Hilberg's book for a few dollars.

Why was it "legal" for Nazis to commit genocide?
Pre-Nazi Germany was a land of high culture and many laws, so how did it become both legal and acceptable to commit mass murder as the "final solution?" Bizarre as it might seem to most Americans, the road to genocide was "legal" ... and the German judicial system actively paved that road. In this fairly short and highly readable book, the author shows how the five steps to the Nazi genocide took place ... and all quite "legally." The five steps were: identification, ostracism, confiscation, concentration and annihilation.

After reading this book, you will know what happened and "how it could happen in a civilized nation." Then you'll start to see some of those road signs to persecution on the American social landscape. (My detailed review and analysis of this trend was published elsewhere.)

The book does not just describe the horrors of Nazism. It teaches you how to spot the lessons of history. The author warns all generations that the road to genocide starts with steps that even the persecutors don't recognize.

Every person should memorize the author's clearest advice: "As soon as we see our productive, ordinary next-door neighbors somehow being identified as deviant by our government, we now know to leap to their defense before they are ostracized, before their property is seized, before they are concentrated in certain areas, before they are annihiliated."

Nazi Justiz is for anyone who wants to be able to foresee -- and prevent -- genocide from every happening again. And that ought to be just about everyone.

Interesting but erratic
Within this book, you have some excellent and also really poor material.

For instance, one chapter about estimating population growth is very good. It is objective. It details the assumptions, and explain why forecasting population growth is associated with a high level of uncertainty.

Another chapter on the future of energy consumption is really bad. It is a not so disguised subjective infomercial about alternative energy. Although promoting the use of alternative energy is really laudable, it should not be confused with objective and integer forecasting simulation. This one chapter should have never made it within this book in its existing form.

Insightful!
You might expect that a book edited by professors of economics at Harvard and the London School of Economics would come in on the dry side. Nothing could be further from the truth with regard to What the Future Holds, a compelling compilation of possible future scenarios written by experts in population, climate, energy, labor, government, monetary policy and information. The enlightening details about scenario planning are an added bonus that we from getAbstract believe will be especially relevant to any business or government decision makers.

It was a pleasure putting this back on the shelf!
I rated this as a 2 only because you couldn't rate it a one and a half. I must admit the descriptions on both the covers say alot to attract you in. Unfortunately, I have to say that this book is not well liked by myself or the other 4 people, in my company, who reviewed it. The information is clearly the most basic, at best. I found that the authors severely lack in research experience and easily could have done a better job on this book. While reading through the sections covering computer security, bodyguards, private security, etc., I discovered that the authors, who have no practical job experience in these areas, painted a false picture in their descriptions.

This again shows lack of research and creative writing experience. The publisher has put out some much better law enforcement publications. Personally, I can't understand why they accepted the transcript from the these authors. I have put this book back on the shelf, where it belongs, and use it as a reminder of where "not" to go looking for this specialty career information.

Not too bad, but serious candidates can do better.
If you're interested in law enforcement, but don't have the slightest idea where to start, you might get something out of this book. If you've taken any criminal justice or law enforcement classes, however, skip this one and pick up a book that isn't so elementary. The best book ever written on federal law enforcement positions is "Guide to Careers in Federal Law Enforcement," by Thomas H. Ackerman. Your chances of getting a job in federal law enforcement will increase substantially if you have the information presented in Ackerman's book. Those who want to be municipal cops should consider "Police Officer," by Hugh O'Neil. Although O'Neil's book is quite basic, there is some good information about getting into police departments.

Great guide to understanding law enforcement positions
This book is a good explanation of how to locate different law enforcement jobs. It's easy to understand and well written. Great book.

Badly written book
There is an enormous amount of detail in some apparently unimportant topics (for example on how to get a green card for your maid) and very little on very important ones (for example on labor certification). The topic of labor certification is a subsection in the chapter for "Live-In Domestic Workers" !

This book may be good if you are trying to get a green card for your maid, though.

mahfouz in usa
i wish going to usa to be with my brother hosam

Shows your options and helps to make decisions
I believe this book may be of interest to many readers.
First of all, it explains how visitors from abroad can legally prolong their stay in the USA. It's possible to apply for an extension of one's visitor's status without leaving the USA. And this book guides well through this procedure.
Secondly, those who are interested in applying for a green card, should find the most suitable category if they want to succeed. The book describes qualifications and outlines the application process for each of them.
Many people don't know that they may be inadmissible for one or another reason even if they otherwise meet all the green card applicant requirements. Someone already in the US, and still may not be allowed to proceed if he or she falls into one of the inadmissible categories - as a violator of immigration rules in the past or for health reasons, for example. Some people find this out only after passing a medical exam. But you may want to learn about the regulations in advance. The book covers this issue in detail, including who and how can apply for a waiver of inadmissibility.
Another sensitive chapter is on cancellation of deportation. How and in what cases this may be done...
Also, you'll find some important information on how and who is eligible to claim status as a refugee or political asylee.
In all, I think the book is pretty informative and filled with practical advice. It's also easy to read and understand.

Cases and Materials on Torts
Published in Hardcover by Aspen Publishers, Inc. (2000)
Author: Richard Allen Epstein
Amazon base price: $89.00
Used price: $14.00

Average review score:

Torts in Epstein Land
Epstein consistently fails to distinguish between the law as applied by real courts and the law as Epstein would like it to be. On the rare occassion that he does acknowledge that his views are not law, he refuses to present the arguments in favor of the majority rule fairly or objectively, often characterizing a court's allegedly faulty application of a rule as a mistake, or worse. The vast majority of Epstein's views in any area of law, including the law of torts, are way out on the fringe of American jurisprudence, and he does the reader a disservice by pretending otherwise.

Extraordinary Casebook
Richard Epstein's Cases and Materials on Torts is easily the best casebook I used in law school. The cases are well edited, and the prose clear and tight. The notes after and before the cases are clear and thought provoking, but more importantly, let the reader know why the cases have been included in the book. While the book is heavily slanted toward a law and economics approach to tort law, I recommend this book for any professor who wants a systematic and clear approach to tort law that students will appreciate

CyberEthics = Mumbo Jumbo, not worth it
The content of this book is nothing short of a diaster! I had to read this book for my Ethics in the Information Age class here at the Rochester Institute of Technology and I must say that this is the worst textbook I ever had to read. It felt more like a highschool essay thats 155 pages long. The book is plagued with wordy sentences that can confused and bemuddle anyone who isn't an english major. Practically every sentence is littered with words that a bare few of us remember from the SATs (perhaps to lengthen the book?). The book's content doesn't provide a sense of contraversy about ethics in cyberspace. I beleive that he tried to stay neutral in the arguments but it only seemed to confuse me. The auther included a lot of references to other sources suggesting that he too doesn't even know a thing about Cyber Ethics, resorting to other people's works. The writng is too abstract and at most times I ended up rereading the book several times just to make sense of it. If I didn't need this for class, I recommend not buying this book. I am sure there are plenty of other well written Cyber Ethics books than this.

An intriguing exploration into cutting-edge ethical issues
After starting this book, I found it difficult to put down or avoid engaging others with the questions the book raised both explicitly and implicitly. The murky waters of online ethics are aptly navigated by Spinello in this brief work. The presentational format of providing background and then analyzing each side of an issue enhances the understanding of the material while provoking further thought for the reader. Case studies are also interlaced into the material, providing ample ground for discussion. This would serve well as a college supplemental reading for any truly in-depth analysis of morality and cyberspace. It also remains enjoyable and understandable for the pleasure reader who has little background in this field. A must-read for anyone hoping to understand where government and society stands on difficult ethical and legal dilemmas created by cyberspace.

Interesting but not the best
An interesting book, but there are definitely better ones to learn how age of the sail ships were manoeuvered.

To get a vivid account of how all these tasks were done during a round-cape-Horn cruise, you'd better read "Two years before the mast" of the same author.

You got the name wrong
It's Richard Henry Dana, Jr

Irritating and Disappointing
This book is a compendium of irritating whinings by a naive liberal intent on saving the world. I was very much disappointed. Skip. Or borrow the book from the library.

Great food of thought!
I'm a law student in Taiwan. I read this book in its Chinese version and this book reveals to me the mental transformation of a law student in the American's top law school. The function of Harvard law school, the holyland a law student might dream of, through its 3 years' top educational resources and first class faculty, is to make a liberal-mind student to be a cold-blood wealth searching lawyer. How terrible it has been and what's wrong with the legal education? And Harvard just represents all of this.Don't doubt that I am an anti-Harvardist, I also dream that one day I could be accepted in this school which is situated on the top of hierarchy....

The author wrote this book in a sence of irony and humor. But the truth is so horrible. I think that all who is dedicated himself or herself in this field could think twice about what you are doing now.

pretty good with lots of info
yes, at times, the author does come across as elitist, but at least he tried really hard to get postions in public interest and gov't..although i agree that some gov't positions are just as self-serving, his actions do indicate a committment to public service..after all, he gave up a very high paying corporate job for a low paying gov't one..if he was so fake, he wouold have sold out like other so-called liberals had. Of course, if you are into corporate law, this book will not be compelling..would a book about Malcom X be moving for a Nazi?? Anyway, the book is very emotional and provides a lot of insider info about Harvard Law. Although things have become easier for public service minded law students, this book still is helpful
