A tender and insightful look into a craftsman's life.
William Henry Pratt aka Boris Karloff was perhaps one of the most underated and illused actors in film history. Cynthia Lyndsay's book provides a most personal and loving journey into this gentleman's life. Included too in her portrait is a concise history of acting in the early 20th century as well as a detailed portrait of the actor's craft. Karloff was the consumate professional on stage and screen and off. This book is highly reccomended for any interested in the craft of acting.

Russian original is what you need if you can read in Russian
Doktor Zhivago was rejected by the Soviet journal Novyi Mir so it was published in Russian in Milan in 1957, after being smuggled abroad. Only some poetical excerpts appeared in Moscow. The book was banned in the USSR for three decades - for "nonacceptance of the socialist revolution"...
It's one of the greatest novels of the 20th century, and to fully realize it, you should read it in Russian. It's one of the most moving novels about the meaning of life.

Envy

Envy - from many vantage points
Boris, a Harvard professor and Boston psychoanalyst, reaches deftly into anthropology, history (Darwin); psychoanalysis (Freud, Klein, Winnicott, Bion, and his own clinical practice); literature (Poe, Joyce, Carson McCullers, Eliot, Frederick Barthelme); and philosophy (Plato, Kant) to explore and expose the critical element of unconscious envy; not one of the seven deadly sins, but an interesting and vital psychic component. One chapter, "The Equalizing Eye," lost me (jargon overload), but for the most part Dr. Boris is clear, careful, and compassionate.

Et on Tuera Tous les Affreux

a
it is Vian's "American doppleganger", Vernon Sullivan, who wrote this book - no word puns, no language virtuosity, but a drolatic parody of American detective stories from the 50s. The hero is a handsome 20 year old, who is desperately trying to cling to his virginity in spite of the efforts of evil scientists to select and breed beautiful human beings, which leads to embarrassing situations, as you can imagine - or find out!...

GREAT BOOK FOR FANS AND ILLUSTRATORS!
As a professional illustrator and fan of the brothers Hildebrandt I was pleased this book was made. Since my purchase of this book I studied it carefully from cover to cover and it's contents are well worth the cost of the book. Although the book isn't written by Hildebrandt himself it's full of good information on how Tim Hildebrandt works. I recommend this book to artist's of all levels of experience due to it's technical info and to fans of fantasy and sci-fi art as well for it's entertainment value.

Far Rainbow: The Second Invasion from Mars

Grace, Beauty, and Disaster
Arkady and Boris Strugatsky's "Far Rainbow" represents that strangest of amalgams -- an eerily beautiful story of a planetary disaster. From a population of millions, only a handful could be saved. Paradoxically, the event brings out the best of the inhabitants, who set about selecting those among their number who represent the best of its people, work, and aspirations. Among the greatest works of all postwar Soviet fiction irrespective of category, the sci-fi books of the Strugatsky brothers deserve to be reprinted and disseminated to a new generation.

Marvelous Though Little Read Now
Fireflies by Rabindranath Tagore is one of the most beautiful books that I have ever read. I am not an expert on Asian literature; so, I cannot give very much background on the poems presented her. What I can say is that every poem in here is a beautiful and is a perfect thought no matter where it came from or who is reading it. This collection by the Nobel Prize winner is made up of fireflies. They are each only three to six lines long and present a single thought. The poems flow together very cohesively. Tagore covers many different subjects. He speaks of innocense, nature, power, bigotry, freedom, death, and love. In short, Tagore writes about life. My favorite was the last:

"Before the end of my journey/may I reach within myself/the one which is the all,/leaving the outer shell/to float away with the drifting multitude/upon the current of chance and change."

I also liked:

"Love is an endless mystery,/for it has nothing else to explain it."

Few books flow as well as this one does. It enlightens the reader through the entire book and will express into words some feelings that all people have (as good poetry should do). Anyone who loved The Prophet by Gibran would love this book as well. It is somewhat forgotten among readers of today (I'm 18, and I guarantee that no other person in my high school has read this), but it should definately not be.

Art Ed Kits are fabulous!
We homeschool and I found this kit to be a wonderful tool for teaching art at home to our pre-teen and teen children. It has all the essential tools, information and supplies all for one really great price in a box! At pre-teen and teen ages they need some more substantial learning in art and this has it all!

I am very impressed with the items, price and value!

Two thumbs way up!

A compelling look into the exotic world of India
'From the Caves and Jungles of Hindostan' offers an intrigueing travelogue through nineteenth century India revealing a culture whose uncanny developments in the metaphysics of mind in the material world are today shedding light upon far reaching intuitions. The way Blavatsky reveals India without the fogs of mysticism but through an insightful first-person narritive makes this an exellent introduction and captivating look into the exotic world of Hindustan. It's truly adventuresome and fascinating. For anyone looking into the anthropology of ancient and modern India this book will prove insightful, or for those looking to escape into an exciting travelogue. Blavatsky and her traveling companions are both intellectual and charming. I've had this book for a number of years and I continuously comeback to it for its wonderful wealth of thought and adventure.
