The Poems of Aemilia Lanyer: Salve Deus Rex Judaeorum (Women Writers in English 1350-1850)

Refreshing Woman Writer of the Renaissance
In Aemilia Lanyer's only volume of published poems, SALVE DEUS REX JUDAORUM, this Renaissance author uses beautifully crafted poetry to defend women against prevailing negative female stereotypes of the time. In "Eve's Apology," this portion of the poem is spoken from the point of view of Pontius Pilate's wife, who is begging for the life of Christ. She explores who really bares the guilt in original sin. She is passionate, yet uses reason in her argument (something women were not thought cabable of doing) and makes her point that any guilt all women may bear in original sin will be far overshadowed by the guilt men, in turn, may bear for Pilate's order to execute Christ.

In addition, in "To the Virtuous Reader", Lanyer states that her purpose in writing is to praise women, and to make it known that they are not all lazy, gossiping, lecherous, deceitful, or stupid as most men of the time supposed. She includes a list of virtuous women to encourage and praise other women to use them as exemplum. If you are interested at all in a female writer's perspective on Renaissance ideas, I highly recommend Aeilia Lanyer's beautiful poetry.

Terrific ending to a series
Restitution is the third in a series that Susanne Beck has written about Angel (Tyler Moore) and Ice (Morgan Steele). Angel and Ice met in the first book, Redemption, when they were both in prison; tried to build a life in the second book, Retribution; and try to pick up the pieces in this last book. Ice has been captured by the authorities who are willing to work a deal. If she will use her skills as a former hit woman for the Mafia to bring in the man who originally set her up for the murder that sent her to prison, all of the charges will be dropped against her. If she doesn't agree to this, she will go back to prison and the authorities will prosecute Angel for helping Ice to hide in Canada. Talk about being between a rock and a hard place. Retribution is about how Ice goes about this task, trying to keep Angel safe in the meantime. Beck reintroduces several characters from the first book, friends of both women from prison, who come to help Ice with her problem. There is just the right blend of humor, adventure and cliff-hanging to make this book work. Beck once again has created very vivid and realistic characters. Women who want to step out of the pages of the book and actually breathe. Yes, this is another in the long line of Uber Xena books, but these characters have an edginess and strength that is often missing in the other books. And Beck hasn't lost her touch with writing love scenes either. All of these books will definitely keep you "interested". The best part is that they're just plain well written. You'll need to read all three to see the whole story, but you won't regret that.

Excellent book
Retribution is the second volume in a trilogy by Susanne Beck about Ice and Angel, two women who meet in prison and have to face unbelieveable odds to make a life for themselves. As Retribution opens, they are crossing the border into Canada, fleeing from both the law and the Mafia. Angel has been granted a pardon from prison, but Ice has escaped to join her and she is the target everyone is after. This book deals with them building a home in Canada and establishing themselves as valued members of their small community. Always hanging in the background though is the threat of Ice's past catching up to them. As this book ends, everything seems to come crashing down around them, but you're left with the hint that even that may not be so. Beck creates amazing characters in her books. I find myself thinking at various times that these, and the supporting characters, are fantastic women, the kind you would like to know, then have to remind myself that they are characters in a book. You can read any one of the three books by itself, but you won't get the full picture unless you read all three, which I strongly recommend. Beck also knows how to write wonderfully erotic love scenes without becoming trite or crude. If you like to read about strong women who overcome great odds, these are the books for you.

Most Detailed Book on Neueoanatomy
This book goes into detail on sensory integration, sensory perception, and tone. It is a perfect book for those who want to learn the fundamentals of neuroanatomy. It reads smooth and is very interesting, not like some books that are complicating and boring.

Review of The Female Spectator
This is not the entire Female Spectator (which would be very long indeed, and much more pricey). Instead, it is an affordable, carefully chosen selection from Eliza Haywood's _Female Spectator_ (a magazine-like publication that ran for several years). The introduction is top-notch. I own this book and refer to it often. This is a great book to read a little at a time. It gives wonderful insight into issues of 18th-century life for women (marriage, manners, and morals). I highly recommend it.

Tourguide to the Metaphysical World
Published in CD-ROM by Bookmice.com Inc. (15 November, 1999)
Authors: Susanne Tucker and Aliske Webb
Amazon base price: $8.95

Very highly recommended
The most challenging aspect of beginning metaphysical studies is knowing where to begin. Shelves and shelves of highly specialized information are out there for the seeker, but where does one begin without a road map?

"Tourguide to the Metaphysical World" by Susanne Tucker clearly draws a map for the novice, introducing such topics as chakras, auras, telepathy, and reincarnation, making it far easier to develop one's own spiritual path. A student of metaphysics, I feel compelled to admit that had I discovered this book several years ago, I could have saved the cost of several expensive classes and quite possibly have met my studies with far less confusion.

'Tourguide" is unique among metaphysical books for its scope and understanding of the beginning seeker's needs. For anyone curious about the metaphysical, I heartily recommend this excellent overview. Not only does Susanne Tucker introduce the topics with common sense, but her simple style allows even the least knowledgeable of metaphysics to follow.

Susan also addresses the responsibilities that go with a healthy study of metaphysics. She cautions the seeker to quest for balance between the positive and negative; that is, there is no sunshine without shadow. Most importantly, she encourages study while exerting caution in the areas where many students find themselves in danger, especially concerning energy work and working on the astral plane.

While I encourage the reader to challenge what they find here by continuing their studies elsewhere, the reader will find that the author touches on the topics essential to a beginner's study. And "Tourguide to the Metaphysical World" provides a solid foundation to follow through on one's studies elsewhere.
