Open for Discussion
My preschoolers and I really enjoyed this book. The wonderful illustrations encouraged lots of class comments and really gave our butterfly unit a different twist. The students requested this book several times during the unit, it really has become a class favorite. I would recommend this book for ages 3-6, though it could be stretched over or under that range. The pictures are captivating, making the written information almost secondary. It would probably be best to also include more scientific, fact-based books in your unit along with this book (I like Butterfly Magic by Melissa Getzoff) as well as several stories. Your students and children are sure to ask for more information after reading this book!

Computers As Cognitive Tools (Technology in Education)
Published in Hardcover by Lawrence Erlbaum Assoc (1993)
Authors: Susanne Lajoie and Sharon J. Derry
Amazon base price: $89.95
Average review score:

An essential reading for cognitive tools research.
The first and throughout book on the computer-based cognitive tools. Dividing the research and opinions on two camps, that of student modeller AI camp and the tool oriented camp, the editors attemp to find a middle ground for the issues.

I found it to be one of my essential books for my doctoral dissertation which is also about the use of computer-based cognitive tools in music education.(my dissertation is listed in the abstracts)

The book includes a fairly good definition of the concept of a computer-based cognitive tool, and has grounds for applying the concept to other computer technologies.

A good overview of ITU standards development.
This book provides an excellent background of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) organization and process. It analyzes four significant ITU standardization projects (from the time when the ITU was called CCITT): Videotex, Group 3 facsimile, Group 3 digital facsimile, and X.400 Message Handling Service (MHS). This background and analysis is developed with extensive references to the current standards literature.

The authors, social scientists, use an actor (ITU standards' meeting participant) centered model of standards development and game theory as a tool to develop their analysis of standards development. Unfortunately this approach does not appear to shed new light on the standards development processes. They note that the actor's multiple motivations (company, career, relationship to other participants, technical, and ITU rules) make the problem difficult to model.

While the book offers an excellent background in the ITU standards process including interaction with related organizations, it is very much removed from market reality. The authors do not address any of the significant patent issues that affected the standards they analyze (e.g., Codex V.29 patent in Group 3 facsimile), nor do they present the standards development within the market forces of the period. The authors note that Group 3 digital facsimile standards development was an attack on Group 4 facsimile standards. But the authors neglect explaining that this occurred due to the weak support in the market for ISDN which is the bearer service for Group 4 facsimile. The authors note that videotex was based on the concept of fixed function terminals, but omit explaining that in the early 1980s the market was beginning to move away from fixed function terminals to personal computers. Failures in the ITU standard's development process often seem (to this reviewer) to occur when the market moves in different directions than the standards under development suggest.

The authors explain the major power of the Public Telephone and Telegraph (PTT) companies in the ITU but do not explain the PTTs' deployment of the technology they standardize. ITU standards have usually been less successful in the marketplace when the standards support expanded services with in-network capabilities (videotex, ISDN and MHS) and more successful when they support customer premise equipment (G3 facsimile and telephone modems) or in-network capabilities for internal network use (Signalling System 7, Synchronous Digital Hierarchy, Asynchronous Transfer Mode). It appears to this reviewer that PTTs generally have been marketing risk-adverse, usually not willing to deploy the standards they develop, unless they are also the customer. The successful deployment of videotex (as noted by the authors), Minitel, occurred when France Telecom decided to fund the deployment of Minitel terminals with savings from a planned reduction in telephone books.

For those interested in ITU standards development, this is one of the few works to address in considerable and accurate detail this large, 133 year old, telecommunications standards leader. However, the author's extensive analysis is not followed with significant synthesis. Those looking for new insights into the process of ITU standards development will need to look further.

Redundancies and Excessive Prose Detract from High Quality
Suzanne Epp is an excellent writer and no one could accuse her of skimping on content. However there is such a thing as overkill. Certain sections badly need trimming and clarity: teaching from this book I spend a fair amount of time "boiling things down" to essential points which are often only implied or hidden among a proleration of examples. For example, entire sections are devoted to facets of predicate logic and arguments. This wouldn't prove redundant were it not for the fact that there is much duplication between the points mentioned in predicate logic and the points mentioned in propositional logic. I've seen less redundant and and more perspicuous presentations on logic in other texts. The homework problems for the large part seem a bit trivial. The reader again senses too much quantity of detail with little organizational clarity. Fewer and more substantive examples would prove helpful. The book seems ideal for a liberal arts college, there is plenty of text but much is mathematical style over substance. The reader, however, will at least be left with a clear conceptual understanding of salient topics in discrete math.

Good Reference For Diving in Southeastern Florida
This book is a good reference source about diving in southeastern Florida. Because of the Keys, many people don't realize the quality of diving that can be found off the coast of Miami/Ft. Lauderdale. The book describes many sites in detail and also provides depth, visibility, and difficulty information.

His Perfect Wife (Presents)

Strong characters, the heroine has a sense of humor.
Back Cover description: Dakis Nikolaides has found the perfect bride for his son, Theo. There are only two problems:
The Bride...Megan Taylor has made a vow to avoid good-looking men. The last one she met left her blonde and broke. Not even Theo Nikolaides--self-made Greek tycoon--is going to change her mind.
And the groom: One look at Megan's curvaceous exterior has convinced Theo that she's a heartless gold digger. The only job he thinks she's perfect for is as his mistress! He'll take her to bed--but he'll never wed. At least, that's his plan!

Fast, funny and good story. All the characters are likable and strong. This is not a heroine who lets herself become a doormat. Theo is just what you want in a hero and even Theo's father, Dakis, is enjoyable as he spins his web.

The photos and pictures are excellent and you feel the despair and pain of slavery. It also concludes that slavery still exsists which is important because it is still a unresolved issue today. a great gift , a real treat.
It is a delightful little book (and I mean tiny lil book) that I choose to carry in my purse. I find myself reading a couple of pages of it whenever I feel the need to boost my spirit, and bring me back to the real world with a healthier attitude. 4 or 5 short lines of wise words on each page are like little tickles though a hectic day.

Excellent introduction to the political continuty of caste
One of the first political science books I have ever read on India, and a benchmark for everything that follows. This book addresses the stability of old notions of politics, the changes in ideas of caste that these "traditional" groupings politically conscious and empowered on local and national levels, and how Gandhi was able to use his Indian background as a fertile field for the liberal politics of the West. A great read.
