The Quilter's Computer Companion

Amazon base price: $29.95
Average review score:

Excellent tutorials and overall advice.
I highly recommend this book to any quilter who has access to a computer. It's loaded with excellent tutorials, clear illustrations, helpful advice, tips, and gorgeous quilts. This book has kick-started my creative juices, and I find I'm referring to it over and over again. It's an amazing reference. Heim and Hansen are quite a team!

An Excellent Resource for quilters
As a beginner quilter and novice computer user, I found this book to be well worth sitting up late last night, eagerly devouring the wisdom that Heim and Hansen have compiled. Using simple, concise directions and "down to earth" discussion, they have covered all of the topics that formerly cowed me into believing that I should've lived 100 years ago! Now I'm eager to integrate my love of quilting with the new love of computers and the information superhighway! The yellow pages of web addresses are especially useful to someone located in the wilds of Northern Maine. Often, internet access is my only contact with the outside world! A simple comparision of the available software programs have helped me to narrow my search for the next acquisition - quilting software!

Outstanding Resource for Quilters
This is THE book to integrate the art of Quilting with the skill of the Computer. Judy and Gloria have brought the high tech words into the realm of the everyday person.

Hats OFF for a job Well Done. !!!

Easy Art for Anyone
Easy discovery art for everyone, no matter what age. This book has been around for awhile, but the ideas are still classics.

THE book to get for the child artists in your life.
All of Mary Ann Kohl's art books are great, but if you have to start with just one, I would get this one. In fact, if you are teaching art to young children or working with your own child artists at home, this would be an ideal book to start with. Why? It covers all the mediums: drawing, painting, assemblage, printmaking, collage, sculpture and crafts. It contains open-ended projects that are suitable for almost any age. The projects allow children to explore materials and techniques and come up with their own ideas. Each page includes one project and is illustrated with line drawings. Each project is coded to show at a glance how much time/preparation is needed, what age/experience level the project is appropriate for, and so forth. My only complaint is that some of the projects call for the use of liquid starch which I have not been able to find (only spray starch and powder starch) - so I substitute watered down glue, which works. I teach art, am an art school graduate and a parent, and I have quite a few books on this subject, but this is the book I turn to most for ideas.

My favorite art book.
I really like this book. The ideas work every time, and the kids love them all. I don't think you need any other art idea book if you have this one.

Very Interesting!!!
This book had something happening on each page! I could not put it down! I was amazed as to how the author could come up with such an original plot! This book was well worth the money! Excellent Book!!!

Terrific Book!
I love this book. It provided a wonderful retreat. I stayed up way past my bed time reading it! I couldn't put it down because I just HAD to find out what was going to happen next! The character development is so real that I could picture each person, what they were wearing, even the looks on their faces...and there were so many surprises. I think I even gasped out loud...I had the pleasure of meeting the author, Vicki Hubbard and I would like to say she is one of the most genuine, beautiful angels I have ever met. A heart of pure gold is how I would describe her. I hope she writes many more books. 5 stars!

Stories from the Heart: Black Butterflies:Secrets from the
I truly enjoyed Ms. Hubbard's book. The author weaves a flare for story telling with an eye for subtle emotional nuance. It is refreshing to find a story with a serious undertone interspersed with moments of brutal honesty and outright zaniness. I highly recommend this book.

Hilarious Adventures in Weight-Loss
My teenage daughter and I laughed our way through the book. I can't wait for my youngest daughter to read it.

Judy logs a hilarious account of her weight-loss adventures in a remarkably insightful example of the extremes some of us (eager to lose those pesky pounds) subject ourselves. Similar to Loretta LaRoche's don't-take-yourself-too-serious style, Judy teaches us the way to a healthy lifestyle in the happiest way to manage our weight. Judy pokes fun at our absurd behavior by poking fun at her own follies, and judging by her book jacket photo, she's a lovely woman who has found the perfect balance.

More than just confessions...
This light-hearted, downright funny book gives new meaning to the word 'confessions'. It characterizes the diary of a woman who is on a mission ' a mission of life or death (at least in the eyes of those who embrace fitness and health over enjoying a carefree lifestyle). If you've ever conversed with people who know all of the calorie and fat counts of foods while you roll your eyes, you'll take pleasure in life from Ms. Gruen's perspective while she readies herself for an important reunion that will surely change her food and exercise behaviors.

Unless you're naturally one of those skinny people, you've attempted (and possibly succeeded) in many different diet plans. Ms. Gruen has the writing talent to take her diet attempts to new hilarious levels. After reading Till We Eat Again, I was forced to take a long-hard look at my eating escapades ' and vowed to never tell anyone that I was dieting again!

When I was finished reading Till We Eat Again, I was humbled to know that this baby-pouch of noodle muscles I blame on carrying my four children was not just my problem ' it's a problem of other women, too! I keep telling myself that my abs of steel days are long gone and I need to focus on how great I feel when I'm weightless in the bathtub.

How I got Motivated To Lose Weight!
This book really is motivating me to lose weight! I even read the book while I'm on the cardio machines at my health club. The text is very funny - I even laugh out loud! The book is very creative and humorous. I would highly recommend this book!

Your Breast Cancer Treatment Handbook

By far the BEST book available for Breast Cancer Patients
Your Breast Cancer Treatment Handbook was given to me at a cancer support group this past week. I laughed & I cried reading through this! I wish this had been given to me 6 years ago when I was diagnosed the 1st time with breast cancer at age 33 (lumpectomy, chemo & radition). Here I am again at 39 just having had a mastectomy & reconstruction surgery. This is by far the best source of information I have seen! This book should be available to ALL breast cancer patients. Very easy to read, understand & comprehend. Sincerely, Judith Oak-Watson A very proud "perky" breast cancer survivor

one of the best books i have read
I was given this book when I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer--it is beautifully written, lots of positive comments from cancer survivors--I had to read it in "pieces"--I could only read as much as my heart would allow regarding treatment. I have read it all now. It is a great source to turn to for each step of the process. I am beginning chemotherapy next week--it has been a tremendous help with "what's next?" and how I will feel. Lists of questions for your surgeon and oncologist are extremely helpful.

Best Resource
I am currently being treated for breast cancer, and this book has been one of my most useful tools in making intelligent, well informed choices. It's hard to ask the right questions when something this scary comes along. Judy has included some of the best. I reccomemd it to everyone from the first diagnosis, through that final treatment.

Imaginative and thorough, but not for beginners
This book will teach you to think of quilt borders as an integral part of quilt design. It is truly imaginative and has many wonderful photos of quilts to inspire the quilter. However, I found the instructions very complicated and not for those with mathphobia. Still, I have used many of the book's border designs and just winged it with the calculations...still worked out fine.

Great Ideas Here!
I could not figure out what to do to make my Friendship Star quilt zing. When I received this book, I found out - it has so many great ideas to make a boring quilt look great just by adding a marvelous border. You can always depend on Judy Martin to get it right.

THE ULTIMATE Pieced Border Book
This book is by far the best book published on pieced borders. Judy and Marsha are two of America's best quilt authorities and have really put their all into this book. You will find everything from the different types of pieced borders, to hundreds of graphics of different pieced borders to inspirational quilts with pieced borders - at least a dozen of which have complete instructions for several sizes each! As a quilt instructor myself, I find the book an invaluable resource. I have six students starting a Round Robin project this month and their "bible" will be "Pieced Borders" by Martin & McCloskey!

Keep this a secret.
This is the first book I have read about grocery where the battle between manufacturer and retailer is examined for the dirty little war that it really is - too many pass over this as just another compeitive issue, when it is a fight that will see one side losing big time.

Buy a copy and keep it a secret - you will appear to have mastered the major strategic issues in grocery, this book is that good.

The issues are examined in a balanced way and the conclusions are well drawn. Be warned, it takes time to read as every three or four pages gave me so many ideas that I would put it down and write a paper inside my business from the ideas and options the book had generated.

Well worth the cost, but keep this between just us.

Clear, Deep and fun to read
I have been reading books on retailing for at least five years, and I have no doubt this is the one book that everyone in Retailing should read. It is clearly written (with some anglo french words which give flavour), and though Corstjean its a great acdemic researcher , this book can be read by anyone. Its deep, because they go into deep analysis of the real problems facing food stores today. Its deep because their explanations go always to the basic understanding of the problems. Its not a book full of superficials facts, its arguments are always supported by basic consumer behaviour theory.

A Contemporary Marketing "Must Read" Book
The Corstjens have produced a rare book. It's not -as it's commonly the case- an extended article. It's a book full of precious content with several deep insights about the trade. By the way, that's another accomplishment of them: they talk about real things, not about academia concepts, although they do have deep fundaments in all their arguments. It's a dense and high level reading for all of those interested in understanding the naturally existent bargain disputes between manufacturers and retailers.
