Ganja in Jamaica: A Medical Anthropological Study of Chronic Marihuana Use (New Babylon, Studies in the Social Sciences ; 26)
Published in Hardcover by Walter de Gruyter, Inc. (1975)
Authors: Vera D. Rubin and Lambros Comitas
Amazon base price: $18.85
Average review score:

A classic work on real life cannabis use in rural Jamaica
This classic work has gained new significance with the release of the recommendations of the Jamaican Ganja Commission in August 2001. Rubin and Comitas give a chronology of cannabis usage and legislation, followed by a thorough study of how cannabis is used in rural communities, primarily by poorer sections of the population. They found little evidence of harmful effects as they described the informal social controls and customs that regulated its use more effectively than punitive laws ever could. A must read for everyone seeking a thorough understanding of cannabis and how best to control its use.

A splendid collection of nature essays & human spirituality.
With Heaven In A Wild Flower, Vera Glenn shares the joy of growing things and what it can mean in the life of a woman. Glenn captures the life of her flowers in each season, as well as the essence of her own growth and development. Illuminating each month with inspirational anecdotes, as well as horticultural and literary insights, Heaven In A Wild Flower is a beautifully woven tapestry of life in relationship to the garden. This splendid collection of nature essays will be greatly appreciated by readers with an interest in human spirituality, growth and development, the divine in the ordinary, and what nature can nurture within the human soul.

A Beautiful Book about Life, Love, and Eternity
A Dove at the Window is a beautiful book for the soul. Vera Glenn's collection of people's personal loving encounters with heavenly visitors will give comfort to all who have lost loved ones....The book also contains many precious quotations from Emanuel Swedenborg (1688-1772) about the life after death and the connection between heaven and earth. The mixture of personal stories and quotations are uplifting and enlightening. I recommend this book for everyone, not only because of its hopeful message, but it is a delightful adventure to read.

I lost my old copy
When I moved from a previous residence I mistakenly did not pack this precious book. I has been a reference of mine for thirty years. I miss it like a long, lost friend. If you can obtain a copy I hightly recommend it. It is essential for anyone who loves preserving, or finds themselves with an excess of any foodstuffs. Even has a recipe and explanation of Chinese 1000 year eggs, and my lost recipe for currant liquor. Excellent. Can we talk the publishers into a new printing?

the complete guide guide to canning, freezing, etc..
Covers food storage techniques from around the world; --pickling, smoking, canning, drying, freezing and jelly-making. Then theres a special section on wines, cheeses sausages and other preserves. The instructions are clear and the recipes are classics! No matter what your tastes are there is something in here for you. In addition to being informative there are plenty of antedotes throughout that keep the reading light and interesting. The following short list of recipes available might give you some idea of how vast their coverage of the topic was.

I'd say it was innovative if i didn't know it was old-fashioned!!!

Little Bear Won't Go to Sleep

One of our favorite books
This book could have been written with my daughter instead of Little Bear. We read this book every night before bed. My 3 year-old loves it and has for years. I also think it's adorable, so I don't mind reading it over and over again. Little Bear is just like so many kids who don't want to go to sleep or who want to sleep with mom and dad. Great book for kids!

Excellent book for all kids--esp. those who hate sleeping!
This is one of my 3-year-old's favorite books. Little Bear is so cute, and she loves how curious and naughty he is! The sniffing game that his parents play with him is especially cute, and she makes us recreate it while reading. This book has been especially helpful in getting her ready to move from our room to her own big-girl bed, as Little Bear learns that sleeping with his "guys" in his own bed is really the best place for him. We read it every night before bed, and I suspect she will love it for years to come.

Another treat from Nazarian
In this book, which is structured more along the lines of a conventional novel than the equally mesmerizing Dreams of the Compass Rose, Vera Nazarian has created something wholly her own, a narrative voice and an invented realm that are a striking rendering of her unique authorial heart. This is about as far as you can get from regurgitated genre. It's got the exciting battles and the intricate plotting and the sense of enchantment--it doesn't stint on any of the things that we love in fantasy--but it also has a cutting depth of insight into character, and an intriguing eroticism (sensual, sexual, and aesthetic), and a delicious style unlike anything else available right now. It's really the perfect novel for just this point in time: a spicy exotic new flavor for the jaded fantasy palate, but in no way offputting for those who love what's out there and crave more.

A Rainbow of a Novel
Nazarian seems to be hitting her stride with this, her second novel. The story is more coherent than her first, the prose more under control, while still giving the reader little pocket surprises: humor, poetic insights, action, and a really splendid idea in this world leached of all color.

Anyone who is tired of the same old medieval fantasies ought to give this novel a try; about all you can predict is that the world will probably regain its color, but how you get there is full of fascinating discursions and distinctive characters. Be prepared to laugh, to nod and contemplate, and to go right back to the beginning for a slow and leisurely reread.

Excellent.
I am glad to see the 'Luftwaffe' literature enriched by excellent books like this. Can't wait to see Mr Mombeek's new series of JAGDWAFFE.

excellent never seen before photos and text
I was impressed with the rarity of the pictures, and the identification of the personnel, aircraft and locations. Many of the pilots were only names until I read this book. It is a great boost to historians to be able to "put a face" with the text. Also photos of rare aircraft flown by the Luftwaffe were rewarding. Rewarding in the sense that they were not the "boiler plate" photos used in most books about the Luftwaffe. The book can also be used as a reference for future works and questions concerning the use of such aircraft.

A fantastic reference for native orchids
I am a nature photographer and have a passion for finding and photographing orchids. Because of their relatively short flowering times it is really essential to be able to know where and what habitat to find them, when they will be blooming and a bit of the biology of the flower. With this reference I have been able to actively locate these lovely jewels across Minnesota. It isn't a book necessarily full of photos (it has enought though of the more showy varieties) but I still highly recommend this book for anyone truely interested in orchids native to Minnesota. It is a much better reference than similar books I've seen about other states' orchids.

A taxonomic overview of the Orchid species of Minnesota
Orchids of Minnesota by Welby R. Smith covers the many species of Orchids that live in the state of Minnesota with all it's diverse plant habitats. The book has nice drawings that make species ID easy.

This is a taxonomic over view of the Orchid species that grow in Minnesota, covering identification, what locations or habits they grow in, were in the state they grow (including state maps) with growing locations illustrated, when they bloom and if they are rare.

The focus of the book is not pretty pictures but the identification and description of the many species and forms of these plants that live in the state. This book is for those that are familiar with plant identification and have a love for "native wild plants" It is not geared to the gardener. It is informative and easy to read, with an illustrated key (used to identify plants), species accounts (covering location were plants grow, habitats they grow in and some historical information).

I recommend this book if you are interested in the identification and ecology and location of the Orchids of Minnesota. I think it would be valuable to those that do not live in the Minnesota too for its over view of each plant. The naming of the plants takes in recent taxonomic work so the book is up to date and the keys are easy to use. A book valuable for the layman as well as those with more Botanical interests. It is a nice looking book for the series minded Orchid lover.
