A "must" for anyone hiking through this part of the world
Profusely illustrated with full color photography throughout, Vera Evenson's Mushrooms Of Colorado And The Southern Rocky Mountains is a definitive and completely "user friendly" reference manual ideal for the non-specialist general reader. The beautiful photography showcases the mushrooms in their natural habitats while the text provides keys, clues, and diagrams to help identify mushrooms found in the field. The subject of poisonous mushrooms and how to avoid eating one is simply invaluable, while the basis of mushroom structure, life cycles, habitats, and names is as authoritative as it is informative. With more than 170 mushroom species represented, Mushrooms Of Colorado And The Southern Rocky Mountains is a "must" for anyone hiking through that part of the world to enjoy the region's diverse fungi.

Excellent resource for mushroom hunting in Colorado!
Deals with mushrooms from the Rockies. Nice photograph & information on the same page.An essential field guide to any mushroom lover!

perfect guide for the Rocky Mountains mushrooms
what a wonderful book. Inexpensive too. Beatiful photographs. It very well applies to mushrooming in the Rocky Mountain region. Many other books have pictures that don't quite match the hues, color, setting of the mushrooms I see in Colorado, but the pictures in this book does.

Invaluable book to have for this grade one teacher!
I picked up your book at Costco and went back the next day for nine more. It is now required reading for every parent who has a child in my class. Many parents have said that the book not only helped them to see reading through the eyes of their child, they saw their own reading in a new light. I am a Grade One teacher and would highly recommend this book to anyone who teaches reading, especially in grade one.

Life is wonderful again in our house thanks to this book.
Brett was struggling with reading. I knew he could do it but how do we help him so he knows he can do it? That is where your book has helped us and I can't begin to tell you how things have changed for all of us. No longer is that dark cloud looming over our evenings at reading time and we now see a little boy who beams every time he reads. This has been an invaluable gift to all of our family and we can't thank you enough for writing this book.

If literacy is an issue in your household, get this book!
"Your book is truly wonderful and clearly illustrates some of the difficulties encountered by beginning readers as well as corrective measures, which can move them onto the right track." - Senator Joyce Fairbairn, Minister responsible for Literacy, Ottawa

If you only ever read one book about parenting children...
A consummate insight and thought provoking theory that explains why children have sibling rivalry and how parents can effectively guide their children.

I am a single father and employ Dr. Vera Rabie- Azoory's techniques on a regular basis. They are simple, and extremely effective.

In my humble opinion her work is both illuminating, unique, and essential in raising children in a healthy manner with maximum self esteem. Her thoughts on children are unique, and far reaching in their consequences.

It is common sense taken to the pinnacle. For the price of a CD., you are getting the wisdom of Solomon.

Adults will also find this compelling reading to help them understand their past dynamics.

I cannot urge you enough to buy this book, and then to implement it's principles.

Sibling Rivalry: The Truth About the Family Favorite
A book I highly recommend for its original, penetrating insights on a universal phenomenon - sibling rivalry. Whether parents like it or not, sibling rivalry is a fact of life. The author gives an easy-to-understand explanation of why it occurs and what parents can do about it.

She also draws you into the inner lives of children and helps you understand what really makes them tick.

This is a fascintating book that offers realistic expectations of family life and a model through which to understand family dynamics. As well, it offers specific descriptions of parental roles.

A must-read for parents who want to understand what all those noisy, irritating squabbles are all about (it's not about who gets the biggest piece of pie but about who gets your love) and why children prefer one parent over another.

The author helps you understand how to recognize and appreciate the different but equally important roles both parents have, whether as the primary (preferred)or auxiliary (supporting) caregiver.

Parents who understand the dynamic of family relationships laid out in this book are way ahead of the game, namely children competing for their love on every front, in every fight.

THE LAST BOOK YOU'LL EVER NEED ON RAISING CHILDREN
THE MOST INNOVATIVE AND PRACTICAL WORK ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF CHILD PERSONALITY TO COME OUT THIS CENTURY. Finally - a challenge to Freudian notions about personality developing out of sexual stages. Anyone can read this book and become greatly enlightened as to how their own personality and that of others came to be. Parents in particular can begin to understand and change their children's behaviors, with direct repercussions for the child's future, marital harmony, and peace for the entire family. The techniques are simple, the changes profound and everlasting. Does for behavioral science what Dr. Spock did for raising children.

A Pleasure to Meet Such Gifted Women
I became interested in "Ten Sisters" when I noticed that the story took place in my home state of Illinois, but specifically central Illinois. I just graduated from EIU which is located in Charleston and just next door to Mattoon. Reading about the Waggoners in those towns was such a joy, but meeting nine of the sisters was an even greater honor. They signed my book at the mall in Mattoon and were extremely gracious at my interest in their stories. I wasn't able to finish the novel before I met them, but even so, reading the chapters after I had met the authors gave the book a personal touch. I was in disbelief at some of the personal trials they went through. It is amazing that any of them survived so much heartache and uncertainty! My favorite aspect of the book is how Jenny and the older sisters wrote about the same period of time, but by the time you get to Vera's, Audrey's, and Doris' chapters, you are set in a completely different timeframe with completely different lifestyles. It is amazing how so many different stories come out of one very close, very special family. They told me that they will be coming out with an audio version of the book and they'll be featured in a popular women's magazine in Nov. or Dec. I'll be sure to check it out, and you should too!

This made a great English Project!!!
I really don't like to read...let alone do a report on something that I have read! I don't know why, but I actually like doing it for this book...... It has some really funny, sad, and just odd things in it. I mean who would have a pet goat as a kid? I am in Highschool and lots of my friends and teachers were all dying to read this book. I would sit in class and read bits and pieces and the kids around me would always want to hear more...it was weird! Stuff like having a boxing ring in the front yard, or ten sisters sleeping in one bed not knowing who wet the bed in the morning...for some reason that sparked their interest???? Then there was the sad stuff in the book that was described in detail. It really made me learn a lot more then I already knew about these ladies, it's like stepping into their shoes (although they didn't wear them too often) I really like the book, after I read it there were just soo many things to tell about it in the report I did for my sophmore English class that it ended up getting an "A"...which is odd for me! :) This book is great...there are just soo many things to like about it, so many stories. The part I really like about the book though was that sometimes the sisters had different view points about the story, it was kinda neat to see what each one said about certain things...if they remembered or included it. And living in Iowa, it was a big highlight of my life...not many things can do that here! thanx-AM

A heart-warming look at real life.
Courage comes at an early age... these women had it in 1942 and even today display that same courage. As I know each one of these women personnally, my review may be a bit biased...but anyone that reads this work will see that I am only telling the facts. Each sister is a remarkable work of art. This book is a true "Love story" about "Family" and the meaning it gives to our lives. "Divided" as a family at such an early age has given great meaning to "togetherness" as each sister worked their way from mid 20th Century to present day.... Their style of writing is free and bold as they tell of perceptions and feelings. Just to get ten sisters to sit down and author a book together is almost fiction. Yet again their spirit of "one for all" won out, and I, a reader won too. This book is "true LIFE" at its worst, and best

This is a great book, but if you need it right away and don't want to pay a special handling fee order it directly from Vault.com. The eBook version is also available there as well as the new 2003 edition that is not available yet in bookstores.

a superb book and the only one of its kind
i don't normally write reviews as i'm too busy slaving away as a lawyer...but i must add my $.02 this vault guidebook is astonishingly good. my fellow lawyers and i can't get enough of "The Buzz" which tells what lawyers are saying about various firms. this is the ONLY resource that tells it like it is in the arduous, sometimes rewarding, sometimes nauseating world of BIGLAW

The best edition yet!!!
The folks at Vault have really outdone themselves. This new edition is huge and very much expanded from previous editions. The material inside is all new as well. The have increased the detail and have done an incredible job providing the scoop on the top law firms in the country (including many that didn't make the top 50). They have included information on the quality of life rankings and their methodology. The book is invaluable for any law student as well as any lawyer considering a lateral move. I have a copy on my desk at a prominent law school and find people constantly borrowing it. Highly recommended.

Veruschka Grab it if you see it.
An excellent book, grab it if you see it, showing a wide variety of full body painting images. The canvas of the painting is the 1960s model 'Veruschka'. The book is divided into five chapters which are, 1 Mimicry-Dress-Art, 2 Signs and Animals, 3 Nature, 4 Peterskirchen, Spetse, Paros, and 5 Oxydation. The painting covers the entire body of the model and she merges seamlessly into her surroundings - if she is standing before a plain brick wall, the painting is such that she merges with the wall. Other body paintings include the illusion of suits and ties (like Demi Moore on Vanity Fair's August 1992 cover). Also Veruschka has appeared in bodypaint in Playboy January 1971. The contents pages from front and back covers of this book appear below.

'Veruschka' Trans-figurations. Vera Lehndorff Holger Trulzsch. Introduced by Susan Sontag.

In the 1960s there suddenly appeared on the scene a fashion model and actress of extravagant and exotic beauty known to the world as 'Veruschka'. She remained an enigma even when she starred in Antonioni's classic film 'Blow Up'. As we now discover, Veruschka was, and is, Vera Lehndorff, who, twenty years later, emerges in this book as an artist of extraordinary power and originality.

Trans-Figurations. In 1970, Lehndorff met Holger Trulzsch, prominent painter and photographer. Their collaboration - Trulzsch's vision fusing with Lehndorff's resulted in these brilliant, unsettling images: Veruschka transfigured beyond recognition. Their work challenges every conventional assumption about photography, fame and anonymity, beauty and death.

Trulzsch and Lehndorff use her body as the canvas. It can take sixteen hours to apply the theatrical paint that transforms Lehndorff. The artists never resort to technical contrivance. In some images, Lehndorff mimics cinematic beauties like Marilyn Monroe and Rita Hayworth. In others, she denies her humanity - becoming metamorphosed into an animal, a statue, a stone. Most haunting of all are those from the 'Oxydation' series, in which Lehndorff's body appears to disintegrate against the grim walls of a derelict building. Art critic Robert Hughes has called these 'an abandonment of consciousness: akin to being buried alive.'

Whether witty, shocking, or erotic, the images are always intensely beautiful. Or, not merely beautiful, but as critic Susan Sontag writes: ''about' the beautiful... very much concerned with the testing of beauty - through artifice, through distortion.'. Sontag's introduction is a stunning exposure of the issues behind this work. Closing essays by Lehndorff and Trulzsch reveal their method and rationale.

Vera Lehndorff studies painting and design in Hamburg and Florence. She became known as Veruschka while learning to act with Lee Strasberg in New York, and has appeared in many films, including Blow-Up (M. Antonioni, 1967), Salome (Carmelo Bene, 1971), and Dorian Gray im Spielgel des Boulevard-Presse (Ulrike Ottinger, 1983). She did her first body-painting in 1966.

Holger Trulzsch studied painting and sculpture in Munich. he has been involved with experimental music as a member of a group with whom he composed the music for Werner Herzog's film Aguirre (1972), and he has recorded several albums. His own photographs, drawings, and paintings have been widely exhibited since 1962.

Insane example of body painting, totally inspirational!
As an experienced body painter I found Verushka's work amonst the best examples of body art I have ever come across. If you can feast your eyes on a copy of this baby, it will totally change the way you see things. It has for me! Mind blowing and very clever.

Fascinating examples of body painting
For anybody interested in the art of body painting, or in photography of the human / female figure, this book is well worth a look. The blending of the model into variously-textured backgrounds, as well as other approaches to body painting, are truly fascinating.

Chasing Warblers
A wonderful book. In addition to great photographs, it is a wonderful story of the adventure taken to obtain the photo's by the photographers.

Here is a truly unique account of bird watching/photography
While many books on birds are either cumbersome "doorstops" with far too much information (even for the avid) or are comprised of a collection of "only good" photographs that all seem to blend into one at the end of the reading (if you get that far), Bob and Vera's, "Chasing Warblers" is refreshing. Not only are the photographs first class by all standards, but the storyline is original and tight. First off, who gets that close to a Swainson's or a Colima or a Kirtlands, let alone photograph it? Any birder who has even scant knowledge of warblers and their persistant and sometimes frustrating "flutter" can appreaciate their task and acknowledge their success. Second, there is good writing. The story of Bob and Vera's adventures and misadventures from the mountaintops of the Texan deserts to the Pacific forests to the woodlands of Central Park prove exciting and written in colorful coloquial speak. Whether a birder or not - one can appreciate a book that combines truly amazing photos with an entertaining story - a rare entity!! Review by Mark Robert, San Francisco, Ca.

Chronicle of youth : war diary 1913-1917

Utterly unforgettable
I read this book in 1988 and have never forgotten it. This may be the most moving, heart-wrenching, beautifully-written book I have ever read. It is a diary, from 1913 to 1917. It opens when the author was under 21, on Jan. 1, 1913, progresses thru that year and on into the war. This is a wrenching book, vivid,super-poignant--written with great beauty. I am unable to convey how strongly it affected me and it remains one of the most exceptional things I have ever read.

Completely and utterly absorbing
The actual diaries kept by Vera Brittain, which were the basis for the much better known Testament of Youth. As such they are even more personal and direct in conveying the emotions and experiences of this period during the Great War. One of the only two books I have ever read which when I had finished I went straight back to the beginning and read through all over again. Tony Maynard-Smit

The Future Evolution of Mankind
In this book, the author takes us through the meanings of the various dimensions. She explains the First Dimension as a line, the Second Dimension as a square, polygon, etc, the Third Dimension as objects and materialism, the Fourth Dimension as radiations flowing in all directions and interacting with one another. Also included in this dimension are the radiations of Wisdom and Love. Finally in the Fifth Dimension she explains to be the opposite of the Fourth Dimension, where instead of radiations flowing in every direction we have inter-penetration, where worlds can dwell one within the other. The Fifth Dimension is to be ruled by the use of mind-power.

She explains that each dimension to be of higher level of vibration and how the Earth is slowly raising its level of vibration and transmuting itself to attain oneness with God. Back in 1940, she prophesies the future of Man's evolution - the future of government into a world government & the union of various religions, the future of health-care and the future of education. She also explains how science through the development of free electricity will free the world and through etheric photography will stimulate the mind into higher activity.

All these activities predicted here will be the dawning of 'The Golden Age'.

A book with unusual future insight.
This book was originally printed before or around 1950. Some of Vera's books were printed in the 30's. It is an amazing book under the New Age catagory that one would expect to find newly printed (due to the content). In this book, the author has drawn on a number of sources to draw conclusions of the future. When I first read this book I was fascinated and now I see these things have either come true or are on their way. She even speaks of a New World Order, and walls that give off light at night that they stored up during the day (Maybe solar power?). She also discusses an energy source that will be free and fully available. (cold fusion?) All in all it is a timelessly fascinating book. Cindy Ratcliff
