Not a thoughtful work, but worth having.
This book is the only resource available if you're interested in the architecture of Portland, Oregon, but it has its problems. Mr. King is not an architectural critic, but rather a fan of Portland architecture, especially, apparently, that of the early 1900s. Few Modern buildings are reviewed, or reviewed well. There is an odd political commentary infused throughout the book which does little to help the reader gain insight into the architecture of this City. For example, he inexplicably calls the urban planner Robert Moses a "fascist" without any explanation as to why. About the convention center he observes: "one of those dreadful holding pens full of glad-handing salespeople and marathon foot journeys to get to the restroom." Many of his reviews are as hollow and as tinny as a grammar student who has been told to fill the page with a certain number of words: "Measuring sixteen stories high on its east side, the Federal Courthouse is the most ambitious building constructed in Portland during the 1990s and certainly the most expensive public building in Portland." (Huh?)

While this book doesn't achieve the critical level necessary to qualify as an architectural guide, it's still worth having as an introduction to Portland architecture---but skip the homilies by Mr. King, they're time wasted in your exploration of the buildings of this great City.

A surprisingly fun read!
I picked up a copy of this book in the Portland Airport, although I will confess that I didn't have high hopes for it. This guidebook turned out to be a great traveling companion. Its short entries are perfect for bursts of reading, and the the book really keeps the history (and humor!) flowing. I appreciated the book's ongoing commentary and interesting (even bizarre) facts. King seems to have done a great job of providing a thorough overview of the city's buildings, from the oldest to ones from the 21st century.
I would not only highly recommend this book for the casually interested, and the architecture expert, but also for the disinterested . . . it will hook them in!

Easy to read, enjoyable
I have lived in Portland for 7 years. I really enjoyed this book. It is fun to carry this book while walking through downtown Portland.

for the experienced cook or the fearless novice
this is not the usual indian cookbook. there is no history; there are no reminiscences; aside from the chapters for sambars and rasams, and a few 'gujerati-style' this, 'moghul-style' that and 'malabar' the other in recipe titles, there is no identificaiton of regional origins; there are few serving suggestions. the introduction and chapter headings perfectly demonstrate the meaning of 'terse.' but there are recipes! wonderful recipes.

the only reason i didn't give this book five stars is for the sake of the fearless novice. in many of the recipes, there are directions that call for blending ingredients into a paste, but no suggestion as to how (blender or food processor, of course, but maybe the fearless novice hasn't gotten to the point of buying these, and probably wouldn't have a mortar and pestle, either). the blending-to-a-paste isn't mentioned until after the cook is told to start roasting the whole spices. now, an experienced cook knows to read a recipe through, collect the ingredients, and have everything recipe-ready before cooking starts, but a novice could easily burn the first bit of the recipe. also, the f.n. might not be aware that the imperial pint is larger than the american pint and assume that the american measurements are misprints.

but these are fairly minor points which the majority of cooks wouldn't be bothered by. in any cookbook, the recipes are the important bits, and these are very good. and there are certainly enough of them to keep a cook (and diners) happy for years.

Excellent
the book arrived fast and was in the exact condition the seller said it would be. thanks for the amazing service:)

What happened?
I'm going to be put in the doghouse for saying this, but what kind of weird book is "Betsy, In Spite of Herself?"

When I was younger, I loved the Betsy-Tacy books, about when the two were little girls, but recently, when I read this one I just cringed! Betsy, the sweet imaginative child, has turned into a flirt as she enters high school--and her sister Julia is far worse. This was a big disappointment. I truly pity Tacy, having to put up with Betsy.

Oh, Tacy...remember her? (She doesn't have a major role in this book.)

I would still recommend this to the Betsy-Tacy fans however, just to complete your collection.

Books you'll never forget!
Growing up a child of the 70s, I read all the Betsey-Tacey books over and over again. I found this one when I was just entering Junior High school. I was so excited to find she grew up too, and had adventures with BOYS (but just as pals, of course!). Reading it, I was gratefully lost in her world. I think this series is highly under-read today, as I find many youngsters have not heard of them. But they are truly one of the best series for children I've ever found.

2 Sentences
No more than a year ago my best friend, Tacye, introduced me to this wonderful series. For a book to read on Friday night I bought Betsy In Spite of Herself. Two sentences got be hooked on the series for good. When Betsy said, "Where is romance? Is it in these unwritten pages?" I was a gonner. I'd fallen in love with two sentences. But, if the sentences are by Maud Hart Lovelace isn't that reason enough to fall? Betsy In Spite of Herself is a lovely story about issues that we deal with still 80 years later. I loved when Betsy took her trip to Milwaukee. Tib was so much fun to read about! Most of all I loved the chapters where Betsy turns from Betsy to Betsye to Betsye to Betsy. Now you have to read it! Go on! It great!

A book that can brighten my day (at any time!)
There is something about the Betsy-Tacy series that always fills my heart with warmth. Betsy and the Great World is no exception. At twenty-one, Betsy is on the verge of a great adventure. She embarks on a tour of Europe - when Europe was a new horizon for a young writer to see. Betsy soon discovers that she is growing up (she is courted by a dashing Italian during her trip abroad), but she can not forget her beloved Joe. Read this book and the rest of the series. They will take you back to a time when things were simpler.

A wonderful way to travel vicariously
I have never been to Europe, so reading "Betsy and the Great World" was a fun way to experience Europe through someone else's eyes. I read all the Betsy-Tacy books, and though I definitely felt the absence of Tacy and the Crowd in this book, it was interesting to watch Betsy's development and growth during her year abroad. Her independence and spunk even away from home are amazing to behold, yet at times she gets homesick just as anyone would, so her experiences are not unrealistic. I think this book shows a very important time of growth in Betsy's life. If you are a fan of the Betsy-Tacy books, this one is not to be missed. "Down to Gehenna or up to the throne, he travels the fastest who travels alone..."

I love this book!
I was brought up on Betsy-Tacy, but just recently read the last two books in the series. This book is great at describing the feelings and evolution of a girl becoming independent. The beginning and ending are both excellent, with the detailed description of her experience in college providing a good bridge from the high school books. I love her romance with Joe, the recurring appearance of the famous writer, Ms. Whitaker, and the depiction of England at the very start of the war.

this really works
I bought this book because a friend recommended it but was very skeptical about the possibility of an estended massive orgasm. after doing the masturbation exercises my orgasm lasted for 25 minutes and i had leakage of semen and everything. this was the best orgasm of my life and it works every time out for however long i want it. then i tried it on my girlfriend and gave her the best orgasm of her life. this book really works and it only gets better with use and more fun with my lover than thought posssible. now i thanked my friend and recommend this book too.

Almost too good.
Over the past few years my girlfriend and I had begun to get a somewhat monotonous quality in our sexual encounters. A very repetitive: in, out, suck, lick, repeat. A routine you could practically sing cadence too. A friend of mine suggested this book to me after I confessed to him that gameshow hosts probably have better sex than me. Boy, have things sure changed though after reading this book. I can't thank my friend enough for recommending it to me and I think about him everytime I have sex. It's like a whole new world of sensual joy had been opened up to my girlfriend and I. Everything is going great now because of this wonderful liberating book the only problem is now I have to get a new girlfriend. The old one popped.

superb info and illustrations
this book is a masterpiece in the sexual category. the bodanskys have come up with a second book that compliments their first book and makes it even easier to grasp the techniques. the drawings themselves are the best my wife and i have ever seen in a sex book. It's easy reading and immensely informative. I don't usually recommend books on amazon but thought the world would be a better place if more people read this book. We are sex teachers ourselves and will use this book in our classes.

You'll fall in love with Laura Hunt
I watched the film on the French TV on a sunday evening and bought the book on the following day. It's really a tremendous plot, a good old detective novel. You'll identify yourself with the girl or the detective. Read it, or you'll miss something. As great as the best Ellery Queen, William Irish or Mary Roberts Rinehart.

An Enduring Masterpiece
Though written in 1943 and made into the classic film by Otto Preminger this classic murder mystery/romance is as fresh today as it was then. If you have not read this you are in for a real treat.

It is the story of a detective investigating the shotgun murder of Laura Hunt. During the course of Detective Mark McPherson's investigation he moves uneasily into the high society crowd that was Laura's world. McPherson writes most of the narrative and we see through his eyes the shallow affectations of the upper class, and like the detective we begin to wonder how a girl like Laura ended up a society page murder sensation.

Who killed Laura is only part of the story as McPherson begins to fall in love with the dead girl. Then one rainy night in her apartment while he is reading her diary, something so startling happens that the whole case is turned upside down. This book is a terrific read up until this point. It then turns into the finest murder mystery/romance in American literature.

It is just a fantastic read you will never forget. Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of this fine classic today.

An Absolutely Fabulous Book
My Mother bought a used copy of this book last year and she loved it. I read it after she did and I thought it to be a very good piece of a literary work. I also have the movie, which is a favorite of mine and will probably need to be replaced some time soon.

Accomplished Work for a poorly understood medium
The CPSA is doing good work on behalf of the colored pencil. Recently they have established an annual experimental show for those artists using the medium for more avant garde ideas. This is good for demonstrating the versatiity color pencil can offer. With this book based on the fifth annual show (the CPSA is about to have it's 10th) we see a greater depth of subject matter being handled by artists. Still...some 34 works/pages in this book are devoted to the traditional fruit/flowers crowd. Some indeed are exceptional, others not. I am, however, drawn to those artists who are doing other bolder more imaginative work. Luckily some very good examples are included in this book. I recommend you add the book to your library if you are a color pencil artist.

Enjoyable
This is an enjoyable book for me, primarily because it was written by a friend of my mother's with my mother Elizabeth Holster's drawings in the book.

Great coffee table book, inpirational
This is a beautiful coffee table book for colored pencil artists and enthusiasts. Subjects span a wide range from people to landscapes to animals and still life works. There is something here to suit almost anyone's taste. This wonderful variety truly shows off the possibilities of the medium.

Some of my favorites include Donna Basile's close-up baby face, Carol Tomasik's "Flying Fish", and an American Indian on horse titled "Me-A-Pa-Te" by Stan Pawelczyk. I also enjoyed Elizabeth Holster's "Isle Royale Portage"; this landscape could easily be mistaken for a photograph it is so vivid. I would have to say my absolute favorite is by "Wing Nuts" by Mike Russell. It's hard to describe, but it's very unique. It shows sunflowers and bees in a fantasy scene.

I really like that instead of just listing the basics about each piece, like title, size and paper used, they also include commentary from the artist who created it. This gives you insight into what the artist was thinking and adds a personal touch to the book. A Directory of artists, as well as a glossary, is also included in the back. This makes a great gift for any colored pencil artist.

When the Soldiers Were Gone
Have you ever been with someone else for so long that you don't know your real parents? It is based on a true story. It's about a boy named Henk who was hidden during the war. His real parents came to get him, but he doesn't remember them. When they got home they celebrated his return with cake. One day they went to the park, but Henk was afraid because he remembered when a Nazi soldier would come out of his position and try to hurt him. He remembers other things from his past, which help him adjust to his new life.
I like this book because it's historical. It was after World War II. It also tells how Jewish people were treated. The soldiers didn't let the Jewish people do anything. After the war the Jewish people could have normal lives. I give it four stars, because it was good. It told what it was like while he was hiding during the war and went on with his life.

Book Review
I had to read this book in lit circles at my home school in Montgomery, PA. Overall I really liked this book. The book starts out about a little eight year old boy. His name is Henk he lives on a farm with the staal family. Henks parents had to hide from the Nazi's because they were jewish. Henk was to young to come along so they gave Henk to the Staal family. After the war Henk's real parents come back for him. Henk doesn't want to live with them but later in the book Henk starts to like his real parents. While Henk is living with his real family he gets to do many things that he couldn't do before with the Staal family. Henk gets to go to school and meet a couple of new friends and some enemies. At school Henk finds out about his life and what happened to Jewish people and about Hitler.

Amanda's thoughs about When the Soldiers Were Gone
Have you ever read a War World II book before? Here is a book that describes what happens before, during, and after the war with children, mothers and fathers. I think the author wrote the book very well. She described what had happened. She told about the events and the characters. I feel the author really understands children, because she told about a young child. I feel the book was well written. One day after the war, two strangers walked up to Henk. Henk's real name is Benjamin. The two strangers were his mother and father. As he got to know them he started to remember. He was happy when he knew that they were his parents. What I think this book is a very sad story. I was surprised that this really happened to a man, who is still alive today. I rate the book five stars. It was hard to follow, because there were so many characters in the book. It was sad, but well written.

The Bug Cemetary
This was an odd book about children who made a bug cemetery. When they found dead bugs, they would have funerals for them and pretend to cry. Then one little boy's cat died. They buried Buster the cat in the Bug Cemetery, but they cried real tears. Then they decided funerals were no fun and they planted a garden there instead.

Child's Eye View
Without a touch of sentimentality, Hill shows us the child's eye view of the grieving process and ends her story on a life-affirming note. Children and adults alike will appreciate this heart-warming book.

Insight into children's thinking.
Ever wonder how small children really think and talk when no grownups are around?

The language found in The Bug Cemetery may give us an insight into the world of children as we read the book with them. It is direct, yet eloquent. The youngsters will take to it immediately, and their parents will find it thought-provoking on several levels.

What a fine start for this new author! Let's hope we see more from her, and soon.

A Woman Like You: The Face of Domestic Violence (New Leaf Series)

One-sided with blinders
This book only perpetuates the stereotype that all domestic violence victims are women and children, and all abusers are male. This kind of one-sided 'women-good, men-bad' thinking makes it impossible for a man abused by his wife/girlfriend to be taken seriously. It also means that law enforcement, the courts, and even the shelters won't take a man seriously when he needs help. This is not a book to celebrate.

Seeing Intimate Violence: Appearances Can Be Deceiving
This book is excellent in portrayal of domestic violence, and through pictures, one realises that domestic violence affects everyone, not simply women. For example, the narrative by the two children in the book can break anyone's heart--particularly for those who have actually experienced the similar traumatic experience like myself. The narratives by the different women are all very touching, and this book can be read and SEEN by everyone, with no selectiveness of the audience. For those working as domestic violence counselors, lawyers, criminologists, law enforcement officials, etc., they should all examine this book to understand the impact of domestic violence within their community. Overall, this book is excellent!

A Woman Like You: The Face of Domestic Violence
This is a touching, meaningful, and an innovative way to break down the denial concealing domestic violence in this country. In this work, Anderson utilizes interviews and photographs of 30+ women who are survivors of domestic violence. Questions like, "Why would a woman stay in a violent relationship?" and "Couldn't she tell before she married him that he was abusive?" are answered by the women without the question being asked. Second, the book can be used by therapists to help clients look past their own denial regarding their life experiences and find similarities between themselves and the women presented in this book. The last positive attribute to be mentioned here is Anderson's ability to capture the "face" of domestic violence. If one ever thought he or she could determine whether anyone else "looked" like a battered woman, one may have to reconsider his/her position. This book shows that domestic violence can happen to anyone... and it does. Domestic violence happens in all income brackets, racial and/or cultural groups, and in heterosexual and homosexual relationships.
