A Masterpiece
Kara Dalkey's "Little Sister" is a beautiful and stirring story about a young Japanese girl, Mitsuko no Fujiwara, who has to recover the wandering soul of her beautiful eldest sister Amaiko after it goes missing when she witnesses a terrible tragedy. Mitsuko is accompanied on her journey by Goranu, who is a tengu (a sort of demon in the shape of a man-sized bird). The story is both well written and deeper than one might expect for a book classified as "Young Adult" reading. The relationship between Mistuko and Goranu is particularly moving, especially at the book's conclusion. To say more would be to spoil it, but trust me, you will be moved by the end. A great book for intelligent readers of any age.

Refreshing Japanese Fiction
Sadly, I have to admit what inticed me to but Little Sister was the cover...it was enchanting and mysterious. Not only was the cover that, but the story as well. I was surprised to be so drawn into the character and her family problems, how traditions are floating around as questions. People not familiar to the mysterious Japanese will find this book beautiful and refreshing.

Praises for "Little Sister"
"Little Sister" is a wonderfully written book that leaves you begging for a real end. That was its only real weak point, but it also lets your imagination run wild with what Mitsu-chan might do. It was much more fun than "Of Nightengales that Weep" which was much more serious. Having Mitsuko go and meet all sorts of mythological characters was a very interesting twist, especially her meeting up with Susano-o and the god of the dead. Read this book now, it's worth it!!

The Complete Greek Cookbook : The Best From 3000 Years Of Greek Cooking

Good Book, but intimidating if you don't know Greek Food
This book is definitely complete in the types of Greek receipes that are contained within its pages. It covers the basics and the unordinary. This is not a cookbook for someone who is wanting to casually explore cooking greek food though. Because it doesn't contain any pictures, I found it quite daunting determining what to start cooking. While most receipes seem simple, I find some of the organization difficult to follow because so much is packed in -- specifically the appetizer section. There are some nice introductions for charters which talk about the history of greek cooking, where to buy greek foods, greek cheeses, serving sauces, etc. These all add a nice touch for explaining what to do. Each receipe also has the greek name in greek and its phonetic pronuciation. For someone who knows Greek food and has cooked Greek food before than this is a excellent compilation. But if you don't know much about greek food and don't want to digest a whole cookbook to learn what to do, than I would recommend shying away from purchasing.

My favorite Greek cookbook
I have cooked from Ms. Yianilos' book for thirty years, and continue to use it as a trusted friend for cooking for buffets, and small dinner parties, as well as for family dinners. The recipes are inventive, complex, and tasty. They do make more than the author suggests: if she says something serves four, it probably serves eight. But I would never give up my copy for anything!

after twenty years, she is still the BEST
I started using Theresa Yianilos' cookbook so many years ago that the book's spine is now split, the pages are stained and dog-eared, and the whole book has a resinous and spicy odor. She understands Greek food, and she can get those of us who are not Greek to cook it well enough to make our mouths water. It is, simply, one of my all-time favorites.

A Must Have for Brookie Lovers
Brook trout are my favorite trout (or Char, as the author corrects us) and there's a lot more to this book than the fish itself. It describes the history of the fish from a regional perspective, explaining why, for example, the fishing in New York is the way it is and how amazing America's brookie rivers once were. After reading it, I had a new perspective on American history.

Karas provides ample attention to how environmental problems have damaged the quality of brookie rivers as well.

One thing a reader should be aware of, however, is that the book is light on tactics for actually catching brookies. It's much more about why the fish is in the state it's in and what it used to be before man ruined the brookie's habitat.

Nevertheless, I was so engrossed in the history provided and the beautiful photos that I didn't mind not getting out of the book what originally inspired me to buy it--how to catch brookies. I've read the book twice and enjoyed it each time.

Best written book ever on Brook trout....a brookie addict
I have fished brook trout for 25 years both in lakes and streams, and this book BROOK TROUT is right on the mark. Full of informative information that was not obtained over a short duration. The author of this book gives the brookies the credit it deserves. Rich in history and sad at times, this book tells why the brook trout should be American proud symbol for all fishermen.

This book is a must read for anyone interested in brooktrout
Brook Trout by Nick Karas is among other things a life history of America's great trout species. The book spans millions of years of evolution and the ice age telling the species story. The science is well researched and written in a manner that may be understood easily. The book also presents information about the decline of Brook Trout populations over the last century and a half and the prospects for the species future. Brook Trout according to Karas were first pursued by early settlers soon after their arrival in the new world. That pursuit among other things was responsible for much of the species decline. Brook Trout are rebounding in many areas of its range and its prospects for survival are good. Many anglers are interested in restoring habitat and seeing the species recover and this book presents some ideas to facilitate a recovery plan. This book is a must read for everyone interested in the species recovery or angling opportunities and is well written and informative. Included in the book are some great photographs of Karras and trout. If you fish for brook trout, don't miss reading this book.

sequel to little sister
a wonderful book that won't let you stop. should be a timeless classic. great!recommend it to all your friends. only has one flaw, the ending. maybe she's leaving room for a sequel? hope so,a book this good needs an ending to match it.

A Beautiful Story
I picked this book up, along with "Little Sister" at the library a few days ago. I could not put eithe of these books down. The story line is compelling; it pulls at you to read more and more. The only thing I did not like about the book is the ending. It wasn't sad, but it left me feeling... well, read the book, and see. I strongly reccomend this book to anyone, even if you know nothing about Japanese culture. I knew nothing of Japanese culture, but after reading the two books, I have a little knowledge that has interested me to find more about it-- and it inspired my imagination in a way no ever book has. This is one of the best fantasy books of today.

One of the Best books I have EVER read
The Heavenward Path is not only a very interesting book but it also gives its readers a good idea of what it was like in ancient Japan. This book gets you hooked from the beggining. I would recommend this book for everyone. It has romance, adventure, Japanese legends, and many other things in it. After I read this book it became one of my all time favorites!!!!!

Rather Sad
This book wasn't as good as the first two. It starts out with Corwin and Nia are about to set out for Atlantis, to defeat the evil Averter Ma'el. The story seems to drag a little bit. And the ending was a little rushed. On the other hand the story line is good and Corwin & Nia are both likable characters. I think the author could have done better, but this was a good try. If you like reading about mermyds and Atlantis or have read the first two in the trilogy, I would recommend this book. If you don't like sad endings, stay away from this book. All the same, I did enjoy this book.

The thrilling conclusion to the Water trilogy.
Nia and Corwin are joined together as Avatars, linked together with Gobaith, the young Farworlder. Now they face their greatest challenge yet as they travel to Atlantis to stop the evil Avatar Ma'el and his Farworlder, Joab. Nia and Corwin hope to find a magical, powerful sword that they hope can help them defeat Ma'el for once and for all. But they arrive in Atlantis to find the sword missing. They must search for the sword in the once-grand city, now a ghostly near-ruin. But even if they find the sword, will they be able to save Atlantis, and even if they succeed in stopping Ma'el, what sacrifices will Nia and Corwin have to make? I read this thrilling, shocking conclusion to the Water trilogy in one sitting, it was that much of a page-turner. This whole series has managed to surprise me at every turn -- not an easy accomplishment! I highly recommend the entire Water trilogy to fans of fantasy novels, especially if you are interested in the legend of Atlantis.

Great conclusion to a wonderful trilogy!
Nia and Corwin have one common goal---Stop the evil Avatar, Ma'el, before it is too late and he destroys their worlds. Now the two of them are joined as Avatars, working together to stop their one common enemy. Soon they learn that the only way to stop Ma'el is to use a magical sword that lies in the deeps of Atlantis. After a dangerous journey through the seas they finally reach Atlantis only to find out to their utter shock that the sword is nowhere to be found, and all the people of Atlantis have been enslaved by Ma'el. The now once grand city of Atlantis is now nothing but ruins! Will Nia and Corwin be able to stop Ma'el in time before he destroys both their worlds? This trilogy was one of the best I read. Twist and turns everywhere that keep you guessing right up to the end. Another great job for Kara Dalkey! Hopefully she decides to write more fantasy books like this. This trilogy is definitely one of the best books on Atlantis I have ever read!

From "I'll NEVER do an Ironman" to "Sign me up!"
I got into triathloning (is that a word?) because I no longer wanted to do marathons. I've completed 3 marathons, and after each one, I said that was the last one. But I really meant it after the third, and took up triathlon as an alternative. I just completed my first Olympic distance triathlon, and had a blast. I love triathlon!

I bought this book because I know several people that have done an Ironman, and I have always thought they were crazy! But after reading the stories, I now have an overwhelming desire to do one. This has actually made me very angry! I stopped doing marathons because they hurt! Now I want to add a 2.4 mile swim and 112 mile bike ride in front of it?!?! I've lost my mind!

I never envisioned the Ironman as an adventure, but to read the thoughts of each participant, it seems like the Ironman is more about the journey, and not about the race. Each athlete has their own approach and outcome, and I could relate to each. The book is divided nicely into different sections. I liked to read about the ones that barely made the cutoff of 17 hours. I will be one of those people! And to know that some professionals actually DNF'd their first attempt is somewhat comforting.

The book is just a great compilation of life stories - knowing who you are and where you are going. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves triathlon. But if you've ever said "I'll never do an Ironman", you better watch out!

Very moving book
This book has described an event to me that has always been something I have aspired to trying someday, yet I have never been able to get the right answers that I needed in terms of very basic "how did it feel" questions, from the few friends I know who've actually done an Ironman. I was moved to tears and now, after reading these wonderful stories, I can say to myself that yes I can do an Ironman, and more importantly, that I WANT to do an Ironman.

The Straw
As a long time triathlete (16 years), I found this book to be a much needed breath of fresh air. Since I have been involved in the sport, triathlon has evolved from a rough and tumble gunslinger's kind of challenge to a much more refined and scientific undertaking. There is almost nothing in this book about lactate threshold, bladed spokes, or the merits of the electrolyte-replacement-drink-of-the-moment. There is a lot about peanut butter, which I for one, am glad to see.

This book, and the stories inside, return us to the true nature of triathlon. The fundamental reasons we all race; to challenge ourselves, to be healthy, to have FUN, and to find out what is really out there for us to experience in this short life.

I am returning to the sport after a somewhat lengthy sabatical. I can honestly say that I think I lost sight of why triathlon is important to me. I think I forgot about the roots of this great sport. I never really had a burning desire to do an Ironman, although I always thought I would do one eventually. A couple of halfs had helped to fuel the "long-distance" fire. I am back on my bike, ready to go, and this book has been a gas can.

Inspiring!

Gritty read
Eddie Mackenzie provides his readers with an enlightning look into the inner workings of the Boston Irish mob.His recounting of his experiences as muscle for mob leader Whitey Bulger make it difficult to put this book down.Reading about his life, I felt both sympathy and revulsion towards Mackenzie. When you see how messed up his childhood was, it's easy to understand why he became a criminal. But lots of people have had to contend with the miserable experiences he had and didn't become "predators" like him.
Reading his story, I got a real vivid picture of the hopelessness and violence that plague Southie.I've never been there but feel like I have. Upon completing the book, I found myself admiring Mackenzie. He's clearly not proud of his days as a street thug but he's following a better path now.

The Truth
I've met Eddie on 4 or 5 occasions, and I have had long talks with him. I know some of the R.I. people he talks about. I've read the book. Everything Eddie says in this book is the truth as he saw it and lived it. I wish all of you could look into his eyes as he tells his story and see the pain of his youth, the disgust of Whitey's sexual tastes, and the true love he has for his 5 daughters.
This book is real, it deals with a part of life that most of us will never see. It does not make Eddie a hero it makes him a man that found the only door open to him to survive.
Read it!! It's hard, it's raw, it's true. If you start it in an evening plan on not going to sleep until it done---you can't put it down.
If he has a book signing anywhere near you go see him, talk to him, you'll never forget it!!!!!

Could not put this book down!
I have read several books on both the Italian and Irish mobs. I would rate this book as one of the better ones because of it's rare, insider perspective. It is a story of survival on the streets of Boston and how one's environment while growing up contributes to the person we become. Eddie Mac is not vague in his descriptions of Whitey Bulger's gang activity and the stories told had me turning the pages faster and faster! I would also recommend Black Mass and All Souls for those interested in the Irish Mob in Boston.

Portrait of an Innovator
It is unusual for a business book, much less one on the high-tech industry, to start with an elegy, but this is precisely what happens ui Kara Swisher's absorbing account on the online service universe. The opening chapter is devoted to Bill Von Meister, a man whose failure paved the way for America Online's success. Given that is is rare for this sort of pioneer to be honored even in supposedly altruistic fields such as literature (who remembers the inventor of the sonnet?) the tribute the author, and AOL chief Steve Case himself, paid to Von Meister is certainly noteworthy. Fascinatingly, the humanity exemplified in this gesture also was pivotal in AOL's rise to the top, as its competitors could only focus on obvious money-making routes like using the Internet to sell goods whereas AOL concentrated on aiding human communication. As haas happens so often in the history of the Internet, the conventional wisdom was exposed as facile, as it no doubt will be in the future.! ! This book is highly recommended for its portrait of an innovative company.

On Line Entertainment !
I read this book soon after the announcement of the mega merger of AOL and Time Warner. Having gone through the well narrated story, I am amazed by the vision and the resilience of Steve Case who has guided the company through turbulent times.

The trend towards convergence of technologies, content and delivery, exponential growth of online users, bandwidth and processing constraints, the fierce fight for survival are all here in one book.

I look forward to one more book from Kara Swisher ( from where she has left) to tell us what is happening since then.

Excellent journey through the creation of AOL
AOL.COM is a fascinating and well written documentation on the birth and growth of the giant company we know today. Kara Swisher did a wonderful job of presenting the history of AOL. I found particular interest in the integration of quotes from many different sources including investors, employees, and competitors of AOL.

I am impressed with AOL as a company. Although Steve Case made most of the important decisions, everyone was important to the success of the company. What a great strategy by Jan Brandt on blanketing the country with AOL diskettes, and the idea to make the software user friendly and easy to use was right on. Both of these features lured me to join the AOL customer family.

AOL as a company, along with the aid of this book, is a great encouragement to those who dream for the stars.

A bit boring but he knows his stuff!
I've lost 50 pounds this year after getting sick and tired about my weight. Make no mistake about it folks, this book or any other book/weight loss program won't help you long-term. The long-term success rates dealing with the obese and their success at keeping off weight are in the vicinity of 2-3%. This book gives you information, which is a tool for attaining success but until I got off my butt and exercised more and stopped eating the junk food all the time it wasn't going to go off.

This book will help you if you truly are "sick and tired" or being "sick and tired." What I loved about this book is its simplicity. He knows how to lose weight and hits all the basic principles down cold. If you follow what he recommends doing you will probably lose weight.

Here is the problem. From my extensive reading in the past 2 years I have learned that most weight issues tend to deal with inner issues about pain/pleasure and self-motivation, not about lack of information. The information is out there. I personally like Bill Phillips' Body For Life book more than Mr. Karras book because it is easier to read and deals with more of the inner issues and motivational tools that people can use to succeed. What I didn't like was Mr. Phillips pitching of his product throughout the book but his plan works phenomenally. Additionally, Mr. Phillips lifts weights and practices what he preaches. While Mr. Karras certainly looks like a healthy guy do I want to look like him or Mr. Phillips?

There is no magic pill, no secret food, no magical combination of foods that causes you to burn fat immediately. It's just calories in vs. calories out. More importantly, it is a lifestyle, not a diet. If you want to live a long-time, see your kids grow up, meet that special someone in your life, have more energy, get promotions faster, etc I would encourage you to use something like that as a motivational tool to get you going and to KEEP YOURSELF GOING long-term. Whether you pick Mr. Karras' book or Mr. Phillips book the choice is yours; they are both good books.

Common Sense Plan That Really Works.
I have been looking for a book like this for years. Business Plan For The Body is, simply stated, a no nonsense plan, spelled out in detail with medical backup for losing weight. There are no gimmicks or freaky diets. Karas just spells out in easy to follow steps what one must do to lose weight and keep it off permanently.
I especially enjoyed the chapters in which the fad diets were discussed and debunked. Other "freaky" diet books can actually seem to make sense while reading them. The foundations on which they are built seem sound until you really stop and think about them. Atkins made sense to me for a while, until I saw what happened to some folks who used it for extended periods of time.
Karas even tears down the food pyramid, one of the most universally accepted dietary recommendations out there by making one simple observation. The Department Of Agriculture created this model. Are there any doctors on that panel, or are they the folks whose job it is to sell foods made in America?
If you are taking your health seriously and want a book that will open your eyes and really make a difference, pick this one up.

The Business Plan for the Body
After reading "The Business Plan for the Body" by Jim Karas and following the guidelines, I am convinced that his healthy approach to dieting is the most effective. I stand five feet two inches tall and in my forties had managed to climb up on the weigh scale to 132 lbs. I had weighed 105-108 forever through my mid thirties. Even though I am a runner, for the last 13 years, the weight still crept up on me. By writing down the calories for every morsel of food that went in my mouth on a daily basis, and implementing weight lifting, particularly for the upper body, on the opposite days I ran, the weight just fell off me. I lost a little more than a pound per week and within three months I weighed 18 lbs. less. Using the formula in the book helped to custom build a plan suited just for me to determine how many calories I could consume daily to lose weight. By continuing the healthy lifestyle I lost another 4-5 lbs. without effort. Eliminating sodas and high calorie fruit juices, and drinking primarily water was another key factor. I am a Registered Nurse and had been worried about gaining weight like many of the women do in my profession, since much of the free food at work consists of donuts, bagels and lots of birthday cakes; not to mention high stress in this field makes everyone turn to food for comfort. Jim Karas, in his book, does warn of some of the negativity that can occur when you start to look really great. Men take notice and the women get jealous. Once you get passed all that, it's hard to come down off the high. Thank you Jim Karas. You got me back on track.
