Clough Williams Ellis was a peripheral figure in the world of the bright young things of the 1920s and 30s. A fashionable architect with a busy practice in London, he is best remembered as the designer of the extraordinary folly village of Portmeirion in North Wales, later to be the location of the TV series "The Prisoner". Jonah Jones, a Welsh sculptor, worked with Clough on Portmeirion and in this entertaining biography he describes Clough's life and work, not only at Portmeirion but as far afield as China, with revealing insights into his working methods - which even in old age were decidedly hands-on, hand-gilding the finial of one of his most elaborate creations from a rickety ladder at the age of 75, dressed in his unvarying costume of yellow waistcoat and knee-breeches. Clough's buildings always manage to charm, and so does this book.

Every year the book is updated to include new prescription and nonprescription drugs. I like the fact that it is in paperback and affordable. It is easy to understand. What I found most helpful was that it tells you all the possible side effects and drug interactions. I have found this book invaluable and will continue to buy the updated versions for years to come.

This book offers practical advise for the ecologist or biological data manager. Although some of the principles of data management in this book should be review for those in the field, this book brings together this advise in one place. Most useful to me were the sections on data archiving and metadata, which go hand in hand. Throughout the book are references to data standards, and examples (such as online web sites) of implementing the principles. I would have appreciated more mention of XML, which has the potential to promote data exchange. I would have enjoyed more discussion of warehousing and mining, but you have to have the basic data management first! I would whole heartedly agree with the basic premise of the book of the need for treating data as a resource and the need for stewardship to increase understanding, data value, and understand long term problems.

Fundamental Principles of Sol-Gel Technology
Published in Paperback by Inst of Materials Ashgate Pub (1990)
Amazon base price: $40.00
Average review score:

The author has presented an extremely well structured introduction to the field of sol-gel technology - an otherwise poorly documented area of physical chemistry. The approach has been one of considering the applications of sol-gel rather than the chemistry behind it, although the early chapters do provide sufficient information for a non-chemist. The real forte of this book is its readability. The writing style is easy enough to make it comfortable bed-time reading (unusual for physical chemistry texts :) ). On the downside, the illustrations are poor, though well intentioned. And the author fails to convey the full range of current applications for the technology. Biochemical aspects are well-covered and I found myself wishing that other areas were receiving the same treatment. However, this does not detract from the fact that the book is an excellent read.

For those readers interested in both history and geography, this book should be of interest to them. Great journeys is a BBC production and the seven writers describe their journeys, with differing opinions and viewpoints. The seven journeys are: 1) the Silk Road, 2) the Polynesian Triangle, 3) the Pan American Highway, 4) the Burma Road, 5) the Baltic to the Black Sea, 6) the Salt Road, and 7) the Ho Chi Minh Trail. Terrific writing by all the writers, although I can't say I agree with all their viewpoints. This is especially the case with Philip Jones Griffiths who wrote about the Ho Chi Minh trail. I found him too guilible to the Communist cause.

If you know of Wordsworth and Coleridge you might also know that they both, but Coleridge in particular, led quite stormy lives. Although this work is a representative of the not so stormy Romantic period, the poems seem to transgress from the ordinary quiet of that time in history. With "Rhyme of the ancient mariner" as the obvious headstone in the book one cannot help but feel that this is somewhat "different" lyricism. However, the two poets don't seem to be on the same mission with their work. Often the reader is pulled in different directions. Perhaps the slight confusion of this book is one of the things that has helped it survive, it is undoubtedly at the same time what justifies it and annoys the critical reader. Having said that it seem somewhat "irregular" I must add that the book contains some of the most beautiful scenery in romatic lyricism.
