I am a breeder of miniature horses and have several books on horse genetics. This book ties all the parts together; the scientific and practical. Since getting this book in September of 2001 I have it with me when I travel as well as by my bedside. I read it almost daily. This is a treasure for serious breeders lucky enough to get a copy. This book can help a breeder better their ability to improve the horse breed.
My only regret is that it is out of print and hard to come by.

This book is wonderful, as are all in the series by Jones. He makes philosophy come alive by placing it in the context of it's contemporaneous civilization. The great questions asked by humanity, to which philosophy addresses itself, do not come out of thin air (please excuse the cliche.) These questions are born of the search for meaning, whether it be metaphysical, epistemological, ontological, ethical, political, or so forth. The sociocultural and political milieu beg questions of meaning and truth to each generation and individual, and each must answer for themselves. Jones places twentieth century philosophy in perspective. He scrutinizes, defines and explains the great philosophical movements of our century in the context of the times. The trauma of two world wars, the challenges of scientific discovery, the alienation of the individual, the seeming futility to grasp ultimate reality are inherent in our culture, and our great philosophers have attempted to formulate theories to make sense of these phenomena. A great book which puts flesh and breath into philosophy.

This book is very well thought out. The author tries to give an argument about God. The title is a little misleading because of what he addresses. His argument is basically this: If God is omnibenevolent, omnipotent, and all loving, why do black people suffer? I don't want to spoil this book, but if you are reading this review (no matter what race you are), you really should spend the money on this book. It is worth it, I assure you.

Any lover of this Gilbert & Sullivan masterpiece will gain a fuller appreciation of it by being able to follow the lyrics and dialog while listening to the operetta. The score also has a nicely written preface and synopsis of the story. Although knowing how to read music is not essential to the enjoyment of this Mikado full score, buyers that do read music will gain an even greater appreciation of it by being able to follow each instrumental line along with the lyrics of the songs. The Dover score is beautifully printed at a very bargain price to boot. Everyone can derive a great deal of pleasure from this score, no matter what level of musical training they possess. Highly Recommended! (P.S. I understand that the full score of The Pirates of Penzance is due for release this fall)

This book contains excellent photography of old cars and gas stations. Although most of the pictures were taken around the Pacific Northwest, specifically Grays Harbor County, Washington, the quality of the photographs is terrific. Great for antique car buffs. And by the way, it isn't out of print. Just contact the author.

I also would like to take note of the fold-out art work that describes, like a present day draftsmen, extinct forms of plant and animal life. These forms have no existence in present day learning. Knowledge forgotten!! Also words in foriegn languages in their recent and ancient understanding are compared one language to another. Jones had it all in his mind. He died of a lung condition when he was 47 years old. He is properly called the Father of Modern Linguistics.
In summary, Jones can talk to a little boy and respect his input. As jones said he could learn from those who simply percieve and truly value their input lest it be irreverent or disrespectful.
But the evidence of his discoveries of the commonality between different languages and his work in later years as a Botanist and with other religions and customs(ancient/recent) is Superb!! We live 70-90 years most of us. But how we lose so much because of just minor changes in our languages from generation to generation. Only books keep these treasured secrets locked away for the reader to discover. What treasures..what jewels..are kept hidden in these 13 Volumes(mostly the first 4 Volumes).
But I must warn you.. that the old English is difficult to read until you become accustomed to it.
