The First Dick Francis Mystery
This is the first Dick Francis mystery and I like it the second best. I like "Nerve" slightly better, but only slightly. This "Dead Cert" contains several impressive scenes. The most impressive is the climax in which the star horse "Admiral" plays an unexpectedly spectacular role. It is definitely THE MOST SPECTACULAR scene in ALL Francis mysteries. Highly Recommended.

Dead Certain to please mystery lovers...
In yet another gripping story of mystery, murder and British steeplechasing, Dick Francis continues his amazing streak of hit novels.

His real appeal is not racing or mystery however, it is his ability to create characters who are admirable, honorable and self-reliant. If you're looking for troubled, self-loathers who "somehow" overcome their weakness and become unwilling and unwitting heroes, don't look here. Francis' heroes revel in their abilities to withstand evil, overcome it, and end up smiling in spite of it all.

Kudos once again for Dick Francis and Dead Cert!

With this novel...
Dick Francis didn't save the best for last. I have read all the DF novels except Blood Sport, which I have ordered and expect it anyday. I have loved every single one, but Dead Cert is my favorite, although Bonecrack and Whip Hand are close favorites.

Dick Francis is an excellent author because he is a master at combining three elements into his novels. Horses:), danger and mystery, and romance. If anybody reading this reveiw has never read a DF novel, please do so, you won't regret it!

The history of CP
I am a big fan of Cedar Point and this book tells the history all the way back to before the amusement era. The roller coaster capitol of the world started as a small amusement park with just a water slide and this book plots it's history through the beginning, the depression, the 50's and 60's all the way up to the 90's. It's so interesting to find out the history of some of the most popular amusement parks and this one is one of the best I've ever read.

A thrilling ride from pre-historic CP to current times.
If you love Cedar Point, this book will give you everything that you should know to be a first class fan of the park. Dating back to the times of the geological formation of CP, to it's present fame, "The Queen of American Watering Places" is an indepth look at the good, bad, and amazing facts of CP that most people probably never knew. There are also some things that happened at CP that may shock you, but you must read this book to find them out for yourself.

This book tells you every thing you would ever want to know.
I love Cedar Point so much and I thought I knew everything about Cedar Point until I read this book, it's the best book I've ever read!!!!!!!

Outstanding--a must-have in any faith library.
You know how some people pray, "Oh Lord, please heal this person if it's Your will," like 1) they don't really expect Him to and 2) they're trying to talk God into doing something He doesn't want to do? It's impossible to have faith for something if you're not SURE God wants to do it. Well, this book will convince you that God DOES want health and wholeness for all His children. And just because the church, as a whole, isn't walking in the light of this absolute, rock-solid, Bible-based truth-- is no reason WE can't!

Get this book and go over the principles until the truth really sinks down into your spirit. Then find some like-minded, faith-filled believers and get into fellowship with them. It could save your life one day! And even if you never get sick, you'll be even more convinced of God's goodness and mercy and tender love, not just for all mankind, but for YOU.

Life Changing!!
I was given this book when I contracted cancer. Reading this book convinced my skeptical mind that it is the Lord's will that none of His children suffer illness. Every time I read it I see new truths and my faith is encouraged. I have since started giving it to my sick friends who need a boost in their faith.

Great Book on Faith and Healing
This is an excellent book that teaches one that the true will of God is for good physical health for all. The book gives examples from the Bible of how faith is the first step in healing. I highly recommend this book to all, even to those not currently needing healing. This book can change your life.

Dated but full of charm and good advice
St. Francis de Sales is one of the greatest of spiritual writers and writers, period. It is easy to be charmed by this guide to the spiritual life. He inspires the reader with a gentle, loving touch which I found delightful. He was also a very learned and experienced adviser when it came to things of the spirit. He seemed to have known about every difficulty that one has in the spiritual life and offers practical and wise solutions that anyone can carry out. If you are interested in reading the great spiritual classics, be certain not to miss this one. It will be well worth your time. I cannot imagine anyone finishing this volume without obtaining some excellent advice from it and also without making progress just from reading it. The only drawback is that it IS several hundreds years old and some of the theology is dated and will seem strange to modern, post Vatican 2 Christians. Do not let that keep you from this book, just keep it in mind when reading it. Highly recommended.

A spiritual guide for true Christian devotion.
A spiritual masterpiece for all Christians, Introduction to the Devout Life is rich with spritiual reflections and excercises. It mandates a slow, reflective read. The book focuses the reader on their past and present life rallying them to purge themselves of past sin and affection for present sins. St. Francis recommends spiritual exercises to avoid future spiritual decline, and unites the reader's future devotion with GOD. Introduction to the Devout Life is a "life" changer.

I agree!
I can't say it any better than JMark does below, but I feel strongly enough about this book to echo some points.

I knew the book was a few hundred years old and was more or less expecting some datedness in the description of religious practice and in the writing style. What took me completely by surprise was how USEFUL de Sales' advice still remains. He was, as already mentioned, a gentle, wise and thankfully down-to-earth spiritual director. He did not expect over-night transformations and did not advise extreme measures in the spiritual journey. His writing is encouraging and immediately applicable.

When my husband was worried about dryness in prayer, I found the section in this book dealing with spiritual dryness and read it to him. He, although not much of a reader before then, immediately grabbed the book, read the section again himself, and told me that was exactly what he had been experiencing. He has taken permanent possession of the book (to my delight), and has gained a lot of reassurance and practical wisdom from it.

This is an excellent book for persons just embarking on a deeper spiritual life. Once you adjust to the vocabulary he uses, you will understand why Saint Francis de Sales was considered one of the best spiritual directors of his day, and is considered one of the Doctors of the Church. I wouldn't be surprised if, like so many other readers, you find yourself growing downright fond of him.

Great book, but not for feng shui beginners
This is a beautifully written and photographed book, but it is not a primer for feng shui novices. I have studied feng shui for many years and got some good information from this, but it really doesn't address the basics that someone just learning would need (for that, try "Move Your Stuff, Change Your Life" by Karen Rauch Carter - superb book!).

The homes in "Feng Shui Revealed" are gorgeous and beautifully decorated, not exactly "How to improve your suburban tract house". For anyone who loves architecture, design, and has a good foundation in the fundamentals of feng shui, this book is a delight.

A master book by a feng shui syang shang.
For those who have had the priviledge of learning the discipline of Feng Shui under R.D.Chin, his newly published book will leave a lasting imprint of his extraordinary personality. As you progress through the book, you feel as though you are part this exciting field trip, avidly processing information and taking mental notes. R.D.Chin's strong, yet subdued presence, will guide and convince -without imposition- always respectful and considerate. His extraordinary personality, perfectly balanced and harmonious, is what defines him as a true feng shui "syang shang" (gentleman).

Finally, a book that concentrates on apartments!
Having recently purchased my apartment, I was at a standstill with my space. After reading this book, I became determined to meet this man and get him in my home for a personal consultation. After 5 months, and my luck, I was able to get him into my home. He has turned my apartment from an asthetically difficult space into a very harmonious one. With Feng Shui you can just rearrange your present furniture to achieve this harmony. It's amazing how easy the use of Feng Shui is. This is a great book for anyone that has a small space or an apartment!

A Treasure Chest of Peace and Wisdom!
Do not hesitate to purchase this book! A wonderful reflection on the lessons left to us by the life of St. Francis and how to apply them in our daily lives. One need not enter a monastery to enjoy the applications in this book. As a suggestion, this book is especially wonderful when read with one of the author's CDs playing in the background. Some good ones available from Amazon.com.

Digs a Little Deeper...Wait, No...a LOT Deeper...
This was simply an excellent book. No other way to put it, really. This book got so far down into me that I felt more aware, more present, more spiritually attuned during the entire time I was reading it. It spoke to me in a quiet and humble way...the way I seem to hear the best. Though I'm not Catholic, I am moved and inspired by the life of St. Francis, and his life is worthy of many books. I have to agree with another reviewer, though. I'm somewhat disappointed that this great man is seen mainly as a "Catholic"...I think if we can take the labels off of some things (and people) others might dare to venture into something they wouldn't have ordinarly. I'm a Christian, but I don't hear much about the life of St. Francis or his teachings from the pulpit of my non-denominational church. Yet I can't help but feel that the messages of this book and the lessons of St. Francis (who sought to be like Christ in every way) could seriously benefit today's Christians, if we open our minds and hearts. This is the kind of book that causes us to examine the kind of religion and Christianity we say we are pursuing. We say we don't love money, but I'm convinced that we work overtime trying to balance our love of God with our love of money. I'm not an extremist, and I'm not saying we've got to give up everything. But the kind of Christianity that promotes "believing God for a Lexus" while our brother goes hungry makes no sense to me whatsoever. I think we have a HUGE responsibility as Christians, and this little book really brought that (and so much more) to life for me.

How-to Franciscan lifestyle
A gentle compendium on bringing the Franciscan lifestyle into your world, this book will help you express the simplicity and faith of Francis in your personal life. For anyone who has "always loved St. Francis".

Gripping. Action-packed. Top-five book on the Vietnam War.

This book tells the story of a village and the marines and militia who defended it during the Vietnam War. It is filled with first hand accounts of fast paced fire-fights and battalion-sized battles. The action is riveting, and the story is endearing and heart-wrenching. A squad of marines and platoon of PF militia men fight night-after-night against local guerillas, and at times, VC main force battalions. The Americans become members of the village, eat in families' homes, play with their children, attend weddings, funerals, and holiday festivities. Their emotional ties hearten them, motivate them, and ultimately betray them.

The book was written by Francis J. West, a marine officer and RAND Corporation researcher sent to the village in the late 1960's to study its marine defenders. The marine squad -- seldom numbering more than a dozen -- was known throughout the Marine Corps. It encountered communist units more often than any other unit in the Corps; its members often fought twenty to thirty engagements a month, more than most U.S. battalions.

I've recommended this book to several men in the military, including my brother, a captian in the 10th SF group. All of them, in turn, recommended it to their friends, commanders, and subordinates.

"The Village" is as good as "Bravo Two Zero," "A Bright Shining Lie," and "We Were Soldiers Once, and Young." You won't put this book down until you're finished, and then, you'll read it again and again and give copies to your friends for Christmas.

One of the best first-hand accounts of the war ever written
I am an active-duty Marine officer. I read this book in 1995 as a First Lieutenant aboard the USS Kearsarge on my way to the Adriatic Sea in 1995. [-- It was in the ship's library in a manuscript format. It looked like it had just come from the typewriter because the pages were 8 1/2 by 11 and the binding looked homemade.] When I finally left the boat, I lost the name of the book. I have been searching for it ever since. I have a fairly extensive library of Vietnam literature and I think "The Village" ranks number one in both content and storytelling. I rate it above even Philip Caputo's "A Rumour of War", James Webb's "Fields of Fire", and "Easter Offensive", all five-star books in their own right. Should be on the Commandant's required reading list (it may be, I'm not sure.)

small unit action at its best
I first read this book in jr. High school in the 70s and I never forgot it. I later reread it while serving in the marines in the 90s. This book tells of small 5 man squads seeking out the enemy often w/o artillery support. These marines were not recon they were ambush patrols. The chapter where the squads fort is overran is unforgetable. The books author was at the village but he writes about the men and not himself. While in the Corps a Lt. O.West asked me what was the best book on Vietnam I had read I told him "The Village" Only than did I find out it had been written by his father. Later, while serving as a raid instructor I told my marines that this was the book to read if they want to know about patrols and ambushes.

Another engrossing book!
Dorothy Dunnett continues to impress me. I'm a big fan of Dumas and his trilogies. Dunnett comes darn close to his writing. Her books are engrossing, weave a great story, and draw me in more each time I read another book. This is the third in the Lymond Chronicles series. It is very well written. I enjoy how the story stands on its own but also weaves into the first two books. If you have the time, read the entire series from start to finish. I'm looking forward to reading the next one! I also can't wait to get into her House of Niccolo series. This book, and series, is well worth a read!

Truly a Wondrous Book!
Good for you if you've made it to this, book three in the Lymond series. This is the best series I have read in a long time. It is so worth reading! The book is action-packed and thre are so many plot twists and turns that you have to be extremely sharp to follow them all. Make the effort and take the time, and you will not be disappointed. For anyone who loves adventure books this series cannot be beat. I can't wait to read Book Four, and the other two books in the series, but it will be sad when my adventure is over. Lucky you if your adventure is just beginning.

Knights is Worthy of this Brilliant Series
If you've made it to this, book number three in the series, you are no doubt an Lymond addict like me. This book was yet another incredible "fix" in my terrible, obsessive craving for more of Lymond and his heart stopping adventures. I am an impatient soul by nature. And because my time is limited, I loathe the thought of seeing a movie twice and it has never crossed my mind to re-read any book, no matter how good. This all ended when I discovered the Lymond Chronicles. I not only (happily) read and reread passages of each book (often by necessity to puzzle out the complex plots) as I am reading it but as soon as I finish a book in the series I want to start rereading it, and the entire series, right away. These books are like a drug. I cannot get enough of them. They are the most wondrous, satisfying reading experience I have ever had.

Disorderly Knights made me laugh so hard, especially Lymond's early escapade with not a small number of sheep. Knights made me cringe during Lymond's terrible beating (particularly since he had known this torture as a galley slave). And, Knights took my breath away with its exciting, brilliantly staged climax with Gabriel.

The Pepperdogs (Thorndike Press Large Print Adventure Series)
Published in Hardcover by G K Hall & Co (2003)
Authors: Bing West and Francis J. West
Amazon base price: $29.95
Average review score:

Thriller is knowledgeable, swiftly paced
Bing West has used his insider's knowledge of weapons and tactics skillfully, not overloading the reader with techno-babble, to write a brisk, knowledgeable, swiftly paced thriller that will keep you turning pages until the very end.
This elitist reservist group, in top physical and mental shape, is referred to en masse as the Pepperdogs because they can run like dogs with pepper on their butts. The rescuers defy the chain of command that obliges U.S. officers to consult with NATO members first before acting, since the war in Kosovo was technically a NATO, not an American operation.
What makes for a good novel may not be the most effective way to work things out on the world stage, where West once had a supporting role. All in all, this book puts West among the great war novel writers with W.E.B. Griffin and Tom Clancy.

Pepperdogs
I found this book to be factual and as a former Marine I could relate very easily to what the characters in this book were going through. After reading this book, I would rank Bing West among the great war writers as W.E.B. Griffin and Tom Clancy. As an Old Corps Marine, one can appreciate the sentence that Bing West writes...."no crusty Marine colonel limping along behind them, telling them what to do." Any Marine would see the allusion to Colonel Chesty Puller. I would recommend anyone to buy this book, as I surely enjoyed it.

exciting techno-thriller
Captain Tyler Cosgrove, US Marine Corps Reserve, is doing his last patrol in Kosovo because he has been granted leave to fly back to the states to see his dying mother. One hour before his patrol is over, his path crosses that of Soca, a psychopathic Serb who just killed a woman in cold blood and stole her valuables. When the captain tries to stop him, his foe knocks him unconscious and takes him across the border into Serbia.

Captain Mark Lang is very close to Cosgrove and is determined to find him and bring him home. Accompanying him are the men in his unit, THE PEPPER DOGS. They all come from New York and their families are all close friends. When an official rescue attempt fails, the men go it alone. Deliberately ignoring orders and prepared to take the consequences, their exploits are being broadcasted on to the net with pictures and text turning them into real American heroes. Politically and diplomatically their country doesn't know what to do with them but even the hard-liners hope they will make it back to safety.

BING WEST has written an exciting techno-thriller that is in the same class as the works of Dale Brown and Tom Clancy. The men that comprise THE PEPPERDOGS are true heroes because they do the right thing in searching of their friend even though they have to go outside legal channels to do it. There is so much action in this novel that the reader will want to finish in one sitting to find out if everyone makes it back alive.
