Live & Work Abroad : A Guide for Modern Nomads

The Guide to the Outside World
This book was the best book I've ever read. Having based the whole research on questionnaires filled in by foreigners living in other countries, and by being nomads themselves, the authors have very successfully helped others who don't work in their own countries. I believe working and living in a country where you don't live must've extremely difficult, and having to put up with the stress of not being used to the currency or not knowing the language etc. must be equally frustrating. If I ever do live and work abroad I will have this book at my side to guide me.

Live & Work Abroad: A Guide for Modern Nomads
This book, aptly listed as a guide for modern nomads, is a must-read for anyone going on or living through an expatriate assignment. During my years in International Human Resources I think I read every book written about the expat experience, looking for the one that I could recommend to our staff. I'm pleased to say that this book satisfies my craving, and after twenty-five years, I can stop my quest.

The book covers everything from definitions of words associated with expat assignments to detailed information on how to address various aspects of expat life. The book is presented in easy to read language. At the end of each major segment it lists additional resources on the topic, typically both print and Internet, so may continue to research a topic of particular interest.

The book can is a boon to all expats, from those moving under the auspices of a company that provides assistance in shipping household goods to those who are making all the arrangements on their own. There are some brilliant checklists that guide you through various decision-makings processed such as what to move and how to select a pre-school. Although I read this book over a three-day period, it's best used as a tool that you refer to as you face expat situations. If you only pack one book in your carry-on luggage, this should be it!

An Expat's Best Friend
Live & Work Abroad is a must have for any person who is currently living abroad, thinking of living abroad or in the process of moving abroad. Simply a MUST HAVE. Our family uses it as a complete reference guide with up-to-date, practical information. As a Modern Nomad I appreciate a complete book that covers so much. It's a first-timers MUST HAVE and an experienced expat's best friend. Buy one for yourself and keep on extra on hand for friends. If you lend your copy out, put your name in big letters, or you might not get it back.

Madam & Eve's greatest hits

I love Madam and Eve
I first learned about Madam & Eve when taking the African Politics class at my school. When it came time to do term papers, I ended up exploring the issues in Madam & Eve (which meant I read all the books my prof had - and scared my roommates because I kept breaking into laughter). Madam & Eve is a wonderful comic, very smart and VERY funny. I recommend it to anyone who likes political commentary, as well as a good laugh.

Best comic relief
The best of the first five years of South Africa's (and a few other places) favourite couple, Madam & Eve. This book provides a history, a deeper look into and of course, their greatest hits. I've got em all, mostly all signed by the authors and i'm told my collection is getting worth a few hundred dollars now! New edition out every year, get em while you can, you won't be disappointed.

Excellent for South Africans
All Madam and Eve comic books are great. They are full of comics about things happening in South Africa, toyi toyi, government, hijacking and problems between white and black people. These books are really funny, but you have to know certain things aboutt the country to understand some of the comics.

A Man With Problems
At the start of "Nerve," one of Dick Francis' earliest and best books, the hero, Rob Finn, has a a couple of problems. A rising young jockey, he is something of a misfit in a family of talented musicians. And he's in love with his first cousin.
Soon there's another, more threatening problem. All of his horses turn into lethargic losers. The whisper at the track is he's lost his nerve.
To save his career, Rob Finn must tackle the mystery of the sluggish horse as if his life depended on it. And it does.
In all, a satisfying romp through the world or horses that Dick Francis has no peer in dramatizing.

The Best of Dick Francis Mysteries
I bet this is the best of Dick Francis mysteries. But I haven't been able to write a review for a long time. Because I can't describe why this book is so fascinating without destroying the mystery. This is a rather astonishing, extraordinary story, and I'd like you to read it without any preliminary knowledge if possible.

If you are not interested in horse-racing at all, don't worry. I am not interested in horse-racing either, but I can enjoy Francis novels heartily.

great book
This is a must for any Dick Francis fan. I loved this book. A page turner. Read this one, you'll love it.

Let freedom reign
This work is a hallmark for questioning authority, pursuing individual freedom and happiness, and working to build a more enjoyable and enriched world. Lovers of liberty would be well-advised to study this work thoroughly, and then pass it along to the nearest religious extremist. It will surely get a reaction.

The original.
Dr. Leary maintains a high ground in his defense of the value of the psychedelic. This is the early work and a must have.

Brain change is the game
Timothy Leary gave us the following commandments for the Molecular Age:

1) Thou shalt not alter the consciousness of thy fellow man.

2) Thou shalt not prevent thy fellow man from altering his own consciousness.

Leary may one day be regarded as the first major pioneer in the revolution that replaces fear and religion with a love and fascination for the wonder of DNA. Politics of Ecstasy laid the groundwork for Leary's later explorations into Brain Change. smi2le!

Easy to Read, Easy to Understand
I love this book. The writing style is easy to understand, and carries the reader forward in a natural progression. It's a book that can be read straight through. It has great tutorials on VBScript and SQL (although I wanted more on SQL), and a lot of friendly ASP tutorials. Definitely a great book for the library. It's hard to find everything you need to develop a web application in one book, which is why I give this one 5 stars. I can get quick answers, or read through for more complete understanding. I have a lot of ASP books, but this is my favorite due to its completeness and easy, friendly writing style. I love Kris Jamsa books, and now I'm adding Rob Francis books to my Must Have list.

Great intro to ASP.NET
I was very intimidated about moving to ASP.NET. This book's seven lessons on ASP.NET got me up and running the same day! Very easy to understand and follows -- explains the differences you must know to get started.

great book for beginners
I had never created an active server page before. My Web site had over a dozen after my first weekend with the book. The lessons make the process very easy!

La Salle and the Discovery of the Great West
Published in Digital by Modern Library ()
Author: Francis Parkman
Amazon base price: $4.95
Average review score:

Living History
Frances Parkman was a man who lived and breathed his history. He not only researched his subjects thoroughly, but seems to have crawled inside their heads as well.

Parkman's gift for bringing people alive is nowhere more evident than in this complex story of Robert Cavalier de la Salle's attempt to realize his dream of making France a leader in the new world. Parkman's skillful examination of the man behind the story lets the reader understand why LaSalle and his ideas were the cause of such controversy. At the same time, Parkman paints a vivid picture of the new world frontier as it existed in LaSalle's time. This is a book that can be savored on many levels: as an entertaining adventure story, a psychological thriller, and a historical reference.

Parkman's prose is rich and full of details you will need to understand the complexity of the charcters and the consciousness of the times. Therefore, you should be prepared to spend time working your way through this book. Whenever I tried to hurry through a section, I found that I missed something important that was needed later on. In other words, patience is needed, but well worth it. Parkman was a true lover of history and the people who shaped it and it shows.

Just a great story
I picked this up on a lark and found I couldn't put it down. A fascinating story, extremely well written and a pure pleasure to read. I travel extensively and found it amazing how many places I go to regularly have a direct link to La Salle. Couldn't recommend it more.

Breathing Life into History
While there is a new Introduction, this is the historic account of Robert LaSalle's exploration of the Louisiana territory in the 1680s. Parkman first published this treatise in 1869; it has since been reprinted numerous times. An excellent, thoroughly engrossing recounting of the exploration of the territory which LaSalle claimed for France in 1682, through which the reader not only learns of the daily travails of the little band of explorers, but also, the human frailties of the man, Robert Cavelier, known as LaSalle. This book gives life to a name from history, and exemplifies the methodical research done by Parkman in the days before telephones, faxes, and copiers. I was thoroughly impressed by the subject and the writer. Excellent; informative, totally enthralling reading-writers of today should take note! Kudos to the publishers (and Krakauer) for bringing this series (back) to life!

Overcome by the Spirit: The Extraordinary Phenomenon That Is Happening to Ordinary People
Published in Paperback by Fleming H Revell Co (1990)
Author: Francis MacNutt
Amazon base price: $16.00
Average review score:

A good look into the modern phenomena
This book was written for Christians who don't understand what thre Lord is currently doing in the world today. Francis MacNutt does a pretty good job bringing a difficult topic to light. Why do people fall down? Why would God do something like this? What happens when people fall down? Thank God for this book. "Overcome by the Spirit" gave me an understanding of what God is doing when He causespeople to fall over. This book is a great introduction to many aspects of modern Christianity.

Awesome book about resting in the spirit!
This is such an amazing book about the phenomenon of being "slain" or "overcome" in the spirit. The stories in this are truly touching, and make me wonder why anyone would say that these manifestations are caused by Satan. They truly are from God. I see they have several copies of this book above, new and used -- get it! If you're not a believer that falling is caused by God's spirit, or believe that it serves no purpose (which I once did), this book will change you. It's the only book I know of (there may be others) that is solely dedicated to resting in the Spirit... so check it out.

WONDERFULLY BALANCED
Francis MacNutt provides a well balanced look at, what he terms,"resting in the spirt". From a religious background that would often close someone off from such experiences Mr. MacNutt has maintained an open minded approach. Perhaps most revealing is the overwhelming evidence and testimonies of the people that have "rested". A recommended read for everyone who is curious about what they have seen...and felt.

Beautiful marriage of turn of the century & modern art
As a teenager reader, I often have difficulty relating older poetry to today's world. Yet this book tied Edna St. Vincent Millay' work, which I found previously unapproachable, to the modern day. The women portrayed could have been snapshots of myself or my friends and suddenly the words had entirely new meaning and related directly to my everyday life. I plan on treasuring this wonderful book for years to come.

Touching poetry accented with gorgeous illustrations
Picked up this up recently while browsing my local bookstore and was taken aback by the beautiful artwork found in this collection of Edna St. Vincent Millay's poems. I bought it on the spot! Not only are poem's heart-wrenchingly personal and affecting, the watercolor's are a feast for the eyes. I've shown this book to many of my peers who share my enthusiasm and have consequently picked it up as well. Strongly recommended!

Visual poetry!
Since I am an illustration student at RISD, I frequently review children's book art. I find this particular marriage of Millay's poetry and Mike Bryce's illustrations to be delightful. I will give the illustrator my best compliment: I will look forward to purchasing your next children's art work.

Quarks and Leptons: An Introductory Course in Modern Particle Physics
Published in Hardcover by John Wiley & Sons (1984)
Authors: Francis Halzen and Alan D. Martin
Amazon base price: $87.95
Average review score:

Would have been great if only...
This is a very good treatment of particle physics. Unfortunately, its one of those textbooks where exercises are dispersed throughout the text and which form an integral part of the pedagogy. In other words, the reader must work through the problems as they appear in the book as subsequent material is based upon it; not to do the exercies will result in an incomplete and fragmented exposure to the material. Some might like that approach but I personally find it irritating and slows down the reading. As I mentioned its a very well written expose of particle physics but it could have been great if its format had been more traditional.

Best book for preparing for a test in particle physics
I love this book, mostly because this book told me very well about how to do every kind of particle physics problems.
Before you read it, you needn't have much background in Quantum Field Theory (while it should be quite good to read this book before studying QFT), and you can get almost all ideas of High Energy Physics in an aspect of phenomenology.
If you wanna prepare for a professional particle physics test (such as a PhD Qualification test), for sure this book is the best one to read --- you can pass any kind of these tests if you concentrate more than 2 days on this book.
And even you are not worrying about any test, this book is very good for a beginner to know particle physics quantitatively.

Do yourself a favour!
If you are a grad student in high energy/nuclear/heavy ion physics, experimental or theoretical, do yourself a favour and buy this book. It starts really from the begining (scalar fields, spinors, dirac equation, propagators) and slowly but steadily reaches the point of gauge field theory, QCD, partons, electroweak interactions , spontaneous symmetry breaking and the Weinberg-Salam model. Dont expect to find anything rigorous about renormalization. Chapter 7 has some calculations about running coupling constants etc. but most of it is intuitive (describing rather than proving) in order to give you a glimpse about these matters and serve as a tool for later chapters. Although I knew the basics of Quantum Field Theory before I read this book, it helped me understand topics like deep inelastic scattering, parton distribution functions, scaling, weak interactions, spontaneous symmetry breaking. Caution: It is not a Quantum Field Theory book, it is a particle physics book. If you are looking for gribov anomalies,ward-takahashi identities, and renormalization of the weinberg-salam model and stuff like that then this is not the place to find it. The book is about particles and their interactions. Its purpose is to prepare the serious student for more rigorous Quantum Field Theory books and give him/her the big picture of the standard model (the forest) rather than the little details of field theory (the tree). I strongly recommend it to any student in the field. The language is clear and the concepts are easy to follow. Its a down to earth approach trying to explain things in a clear cut manner rather than confusing the student with "big words" and terminology. A nice suplement to this book is the book by Chris Quigg (...huge number of references). In short, this book is worth its money ! Buy it !

The Way They Were (and some still are)
This book was actually published first in 1961; I discovered it in the early 70's and have enjoyed it time and again since then. For anyone who wants to know what life was like in every Poor Clare monastery before Vatican II and the decimation of the religious life, this is undoubtedly the book to read. The lifestyle still persists in a few monasteries and you might want to visit their websites. If you enjoy this book, Sr. Mary Francis has written others as well (though none is quite as good as this one!).

Fantastic View into the Life of Nuns
I throughly enjoyed this book. As a Catholic girl I have considered becoming a nun at various stages of my life. Reading this book helped me to get a better perspective of what nunhood might be like. Mother Mary Francis discusses the ups and downs, and the beauties and the horrors of being a nun. I reccomend this for any one who wants to understand the beauty of religious life.

A classic in books about religious life
I loved this book so much, that I marked passages of it to share with other women I know who are discerning religious life. Mother Mary Francis tells us about a group of Poor Clare nuns beginning a new foundation in New Mexico. But that is just the superficial framework of the book. What she really gives us is a superb view of the theology of life as a Poor Clare nun.

In her writings on Saints Francis and Clare, her pen paints pictures that make these wonderful saints come alive for us. Mother Mary Francis shares with us their teachings to their nuns, and what impact those teachings have on their lives. So many consider the cloisered religious life to be a dark, solitary, very solemn life, but that is far from the truth. A monastery is a place of love, and light, and laughter, and no one tells us that so well as Mother Mary Francis.

I highly recommend this book to any and all, but especially to those discerning religious life and to those with a devotion to St. Clare. This book may be old, but it is far from outdated.
