Fr. Miller has the qualifications on all fronts, as a philosopher, a theologian, and his former employment in the Papal Secretariat of State, to gather and remark on these works. I just got a copy from Sporty's. I devoured it as soon as I started looking through it.I will be recomending it to my friends who fly the Bonanza. I expect I will re-read it again and again. It also will come in very handy towards making some placards for various speeds and manuvers.

This text goes directly to aircraft performance without digression. Clear and easy to read yet well documented. I have looked for a book like this for some time and am very happy to have found it. If you liked Aerodynamics for Naval Aviators (ISBN 1-56027-140-x) but thought it too long and too general you will treasure this book.

John Ecklebar is an outstanding Bonanza instructor, and this book offers some of his insights. John is one of the American Bonanza Society's instructors for the Bonanza Pilot Proficiency Program. Highly recommended.

I think this book is great it was written so neatly and i think you should all call the publisher and tell them to bring it back.

Simply, there are three main reasons to read this book One, it provides the reader with an inside look at the lifestyle of Major League Baseball Players. This is especially interesting because the Krukker is not the stereotypical mold for a baseball player, physically, or as you will know when you finish the book, he has a more humble attitude then baseball players are given credit for. It really makes you wish you could live your life playing baseball Two, it is hysterical, especially the second or third time you read it (I have read it at least 5 times) Three, even non-baseball fans can appreciate this down to earth look at life generally.

John Kruk was not known in Philly for his neatness therefore you cannot expect his book to be neat either ! Instead the book is everything that embodied Krukker,and the rest of his team mates during that wonderful season 1993. He is honest, open and caring. He is straight forward where criticism is needed and gentle and kind where emotions ran high. His story about his bout with cancer was touching and human. I ain't an athlete lady, maybe not but you are a heck of a human being. Thanks for a terrific experience. This book makes us all part of the 93 Phillies. Welcome to Macho Row !

I don't know why or how but when I read out loud any 5-10 names of God, I feel God's presence. May be it was just me I thought. So I let my friend borrow it and told him to read it out loud during his devotion and he felt the presence of God as well.

It is a simple book, on one page it has a name of God such as "I am the friend of sinners" and one bible quote to back up the name, yet so powerful. I must be invoking something spiritual when I verbalize the names of God. I don't get it, but who cares, I simply delight in the presence of God.

I was in Chicago last year, when I first heard John Paul Jackson read the names of God. The Presence of God pervaded the atmosphere. Hundreds of people were deeply moved by the Presence of the Holy Spirit. I could do nothing other than fall to my knees and weep. I will never forget it.

When I learned that the book was available, I could hardly wait to read it. I regularly walk through my home, reading the names of God. As I do, I am aware that He comes to fill the spaces of my daily life as personally and powerfully as He did that Saturday night in Chicago.

I love to meditate on the names of God, because I am aware that as I do so, He is smiling and keeping a record of it. It is such a simple way to bring joy to the heart of my Heavenly Father. For me, it brings an immense awareness of His love, strength to my spirit, focus for my mind, and an increase of faith.

The author has identified 365 names of God and suggests that the reader meditate on a different one each day. When I pick up the book and begin to read, I cannot stop with just one. I usually do not put the book down, until I have read them all.

Five stars seem too few to rate how highly I esteem this author and I AM.

This book contains little excerpts from various speeches and works of Pope John Paul II. It also contains a brilliant collection of photos taken of the Pope over the years. It is an inspirational book, and a GREAT collection of photos, if you are looking for pics of our wonderful Pope.

This book is deeply inspirational. What a great gift Pope John Paul II is to the world! The photograph of the Holy Father and Mother Theresa smiling into each other's eyes is incredible. This book is a personal treasure.

In his most recent account, His Holiness Pope John Paul the II is still representing a truly Christian view of not only Europe but the whole world. John Paul the II gives concrete examples of how you can be happy and live "joyfully" through the "living spirit". The Pope says that you must be humble and completely surrender to GOD. Only then can a "true beleiver" find a bit of peice in "the world of men". He goes on to site many examples, idieas , and even mentions some of the great saints in thr tradition! ...

The cops and robbers game was played differently in St. Paul in the '20's and '30's than in most American cities. That's because in St. Paul organized crime was largely controlled by the Police Department. Consequently, it became the headquarters for fugitive gangs who found refuge there until Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson, and the Barker-Karpis gang brought federal heat to the Twin Cities in 1934. The story of the "public enemies" who found sanctuary through local mobsters and police contacts in St. Paul is told in full glorious detail here for the first time, thanks to author Paul Maccabee's great research and his battle for the release of long buried FBI files. It's a must read for all gangster buffs.

What the lengthy reviews don't really touch upon is the writing style of the author. Maccabee is has a great touch -- light, breezy and able to turn deadly serious without a wisp of melodrama. The book is organized in short snippets, little windows into the world of the times. It is tempting to grab the book and just read one of the snippets. Good luck. I've been late to work, appointments, dinner, etc, too many times because I've gotten sucked in to "just reading one more". Certainly, it's tantalizing to know the places Maccabee describes firsthand as a St. Paul resident (imagine my surprise when I found that my office was once home to a huge underworld betting parlor!) I would guess that Maccabee's storytelling insticts would enthrall people from any geographic location.

The editorial reviews above pretty much say it all--I'll just add that this book was my expert guide around St. Paul on a snowy Sunday in December. It's a class act--well-written and slickly designed on glossy paper, with plenty of rare photos. If you're interested in Depression-era crime, all you have to do is buy this book from Amazon and a plane ticket to the Twin Cities.

Katie John is a character I grew up with, and the books about her are filled with fun, adventures, and funny things that happen, while teaching good vurtues. Which is more than I can say for some of the depressing childrens' books in the bookstores and libraries today. The author should keep writing!

I loved Katie John; she was such a tomboy, and -- being one myself -- I enjoyed watching her get in and out of trouble and excitement. A definite must-read.

Apart from Paul Horgan fans, probably most people coming to this book will be doing so to learn more about the real life archbishop who inspired Willa Cather's great novel DEATH COMES FOR THE ARCHBISHOP. And just as Cather's novel concerns the friendship and work of two major characters--Archbishop Jean Latour and his vicar Father Joseph Vaillant--so Horgan's biography necessarily tells the story not only of Juan Bautista Lamy but also Joseph Machebeuf.

Horgan's biography succeeds magnificently in two ways. First, for those who will be coming to the book from reading Cather, one will find vastly greater depth and detail than was possible in that novel. So, the book is a boon for Cather fans. Second, even if one has not read Cather, the book tells a magnificent story of a truly heroic man and his closest friend. Their story is also the story of the West as a whole, and Santa Fe in particular.

There are biographies that record the rote facts about an individual, and unfortunately most fall into this category. And the there are biographies that almost manage to bring you into contact and introduce you to someone you have never met. Lamy emerges almost as someone you know, instead of someone you merely know things about.

I heartily recommend this book to anyone interested in either history of the American West or in Willa Cather's great novel. Although I am not myself Roman Catholic, it would probably also be enjoyed by those whose main interest is in Church History. It is a tragedy that this book is not currently in print. With so many much weaker and less interesting biographies available, it is unfortunate that many of the truly excellent ones are not.

It would be difficult if not impossible to overpraise this book. As a narrative of what the southwestern United States was like during the nineteenth century, as a triumph of research into a multitude of different sources spread out all over the United States and western Europe, and as a biography of an undeniably great man (the first Roman Catholic Archbishop of Santa Fe, whose life this book tells from his departure from France around 1839 to serve as a missionary to the United States to his death in New Mexico the late 1880s), this book succeeds wonderfully. It's one of the best books I have ever read.

This outstanding book on the first Archbishop of Santa Fe - the French-born Jean Baptiste Lamy , details Lamy's tireless efforts at rebuilding the Catholic church in New Mexico from the state of shocking neglect which he found it to be in. It delineates the work Lamy did to improve both the spiritual and material lives of the people under his care. It also enumerates the many hardships Lamy endured. Evidence of the tremendous devotion, unwavering faith and sterling character of this man of God can be found throughout the book. If there is one word which can best describe Lamy, that word would be - Saint!

Author Paul Horgan won a Pulitzer prize for this book and it is not difficult to see why. It was readily apparent that Horgan had done exhaustive research from the numerous details contained in the book.

All in all, a meticulously researched book on a most remarkable individual of the American Southwest written by a diligent author.

Dr. John F. Crosby's "The Mystery of 'Fair Love,'" contained in this collection of essays, is one of the best introductions to Pope John Paul II's theological anthropology, "theology of the body," and thought on human sexuality available. Rarely does one find such insight and concise clarity in one place. Follow up this essay with the Pope's works collected in Pope John Paul II on the Genius of Women and/or Theology of the Body, both available through Amazon.

So much coverage of John Paul II presents him as a politician or a superstar. This book explains his role as a thinker. And it does a good job showing the theory behind the battles at the UN and the battle to restore orthodoxy---or just a little sanity---within the Catholic church.

John Paul II, the philosopher pope, is the most intriguing thinker of our time. But it's not easy to plow through the mass of encyclicals, adresseses, and books. This work provides an excellent study of the Pope's thought. Special kudos to John Crosby for showing the phenomenological side of the pope and to Joseph Koterski for unraveling the Thomist side.

Knowledge makes love fruitful in service. God calls us to be the instruments of salvation for others(evangelization). That is the work of the Church. Far too many of us find ourselves involved in church work and not in the work of the Church. This little book will help straighten out the misunderstanding.

"Loving the Church" is a series of meditations on the Church given as a Lenten retreat(1966) to the Holy Father and his staff. The aim of the book(retreat) is to instill a more profound sense of Church(that's our reason for reading the book). I can imagine the difficulty of retaining a sense of mystery in the Church when such as a papal staff is unceasingly confronted with the practical, day to day, sometimes mundane requirements of a visibile and functioning organization. Yet the Church is fundamentally a mystery, founded in the mystery of Christ himself, human and divine. We are put into communion with this mystery through communion with Christ. I believe this to be a fundamental point for our author, Christoph Cardinal Schonborn.

Although the whole is always the sum of all its parts, two "chapters" alone are worth the price of the book. In "The Mysteries of the Life of Christ," Schonborn anchors us in God's plan for us; to be united to himself in the Son's humanity. That humanity, in Schonborn's view is "radically filial" not "sevile". By God's design we are to become "sons(daughters) in the Son". In the words of the Fathers of the Church, "divinized". For Schonborn becoming Church means, at its deepest level, this very participation in the Sonship of Jesus.

The other "chapter" which excels is "The Communion of Saints". Its key understanding is that "the Church does not come to an end at the threshold of death." In Christoph Schonborn's words, "She(the Church) is the communion of ALL who live in Christ." A more compelling explanation on the communion of saints than in this meditation will be hard to find anywhere.

A repeated emphasis found in "Loving the Church" is that our participation in the Mystery of the Church is reality and not theological theory. It is based on fact, the fact of the Incarnation of the very Son of God in the real womb of a very real woman approximately two thousand years ago, Mary.

Though I found the first part of the book a little slow. That may just be me or the fact that the Cardinal was preparing the ground, tilling the soil as it were. However, no one will come away from this book without having been abundantly enriched.

A must read!

This is a man who talks about the Catechism and Scared Scripture in such a way that the reader almost hears a kind of heavenly music in which the heart wants to sing! Beautifully written, the book offers insight to scripture par excellance! The author sees all of creation and salvation history as a prefiguring of the "Church" as only Catholics can understand that term. Compelling, I could not put the book down until I finished it and then couldn't wait to give it to my parish priest. A true treasure to read for Lent! Cardinal Schonborn may indeed be our next Pope.

One delightful tip is to read these exercises and then read the catechism sections they refer to. Christoph Cardinal Schonborn is the general editor of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and might possibly become our next Pope. These reflections were actually preached for Pope John Paul II; you can't get more orthodox or reliable than that.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church can be a heady book, very long, a bit technical for the layman. But it will spring to life for you in reading these spiritual exercises. This book taught me not just how to read the Catechism, but how to pray it.

Cardinal Schonborn's great gift is the intense spirituality of his writing, which is deeply rooted in traditional Catholic theology and ancient Catholic scriptural exigesis. Christoph Schonborn will teach you to see the Church as she sees herself, as Bride, as victim, as the great cloud of witnesses which is the mystical Body of her Divine Spouse; in short you will see the Church as the communion of saints in Holy communion with the Lord. You will see the Church as Christ sees her--and if you're a convert, as I am, you will fall in love with her all over again.
