The classic collection of literary theory
In this day and age of splintered and broken schools of literary theory, where nobody seems to agree what is the right way to go about reading and discussin literature, W.J. Bate's "Criticism: the Major Texts" is a wistful reminder of the days when critics were far more certain. For several decades after its publication, this collection was the classroom standard for the subject; it still serves as the best collection for any study of the history of literary theory. The introductions are brief but exacting; the texts are chosen with judicious editing; the lessons learned are not easily forgotten. In short, a wonderful read for anyone with a literary bent.

Terrific!
Now that Eastern Europe is once again in the news and the USA is bumbling along into that hornets nest, this book, based on real people, is a stunning trip through a violent period of history. It is seen through the naive eyes of a happy-go- lucky, girl-chasing concert pianist who gets sucked into World War One and becomes a terrific soldier in the process. The scenes of battle and the concerts are really -- surpisingly -- exciting. I loved it and have given this book as gifts to several good friends. But it's hard to find, although amazon.com does manage to track it down.

I Cannot Recommend This Book Highly Enough
This is a fantastic collection of pilot's stories dealing with the "Last of the Gunfighters" the Vought F-8 Crusader. Rear Admiral Paul T Gillcrist has 2000 hours of Crusader time and his impressive knowledge and affection for the aircraft is very apparent throughout. The first part of the book arms the reader with background knowledge of early jet carrier operations as well as the story of Crusader speed records. The bulk of the book deals with the experiences, both harrowing and amusing, of numerous Crusader pilots including fascinating interviews with each pilot to shoot down a MiG in the aircraft. The final chapters give the author's expert analysis of the air war in Vietnam, and an overview of the use of the aircraft by the French Navy, the Naval Reserve and NASA. The book does not suffer from the shortfall of other books in that it is very skilfully written so that a layman can imagine theirself in the thick of the action. After reading this book you are left with a great respect for the men of the US Navy and Marine Corps who flew and fought in the Crusader and operated the aircraft from small aircraft carriers. As a commercial pilot I can only wonder how I would cope with landing a Mach2 airplane on a small heaving 27C carrier deck at night. To these men it was routine. Anyone who is remotely interested in aviation will find this book a great asset to their collection and I cannot recommend it highly enough

Death Dreams: Unveiling Mysteries of the Unconscious Mind

A good survey
I liked the scope of this book. Each chapter covered a different angle on death and dreams of death. This is all interspersed with dreams of Kramer's students from a college course. These are some of the most intriguing and fresh. This book does give up depth in it's attempts to cover so many angles--religious, philosophical, literary, psychological, shamanic... Also, Kramer basically accepts the notion of death in dreams as transformative and liberating. I, too, find it the most interesting approach, but what he presents in the book doesn't necessary lead to this conclusion.

A December Gift from the Shoals
Published in Paperback by Seacoast Publications of New England (1993)
Authors: Paul Peter Jesep and John Bowdren
Amazon base price: $12.95

A Great Little Adventure for Young Readers
Part fantasy (literarily speaking) and part historic fiction, this is a neat little story, charmingly illustrated. A boy named Jim goes on a self-appointed mission to retrieve pirate booty from a haunted island along the New Hampshire/Maine coast. The print job is a little unwieldy, and if anything the story is too short. But I give 5 stars for the content: the boy Jim has a good heart, and Paul Peter Jesep succeeds in infusing a little of the local history and lore into the tale.

Add it to the canon of New England-based children's literature.

The companion book to this, "Lady-Ghost of the Isles of Shoals," unfortunately seems to be unavailable now.

An excellent overview of deep sea biology
An excellent overview of deep sea biology for the biologist (not a good book for people without a scientific background). Some of the material is a little dated, but the information for the most part is very good.

Discounting and Intergenerational Equity (Resources for the Future)

Review
This book contains the most recent thoughts on global climate change policy and the much debated issue of choosing a discount rate. Most climate change policies and abatement programs will be a cost to the present generation and a benefit to future generations. This causes complications in the decision-making process. For short-term projects (within 40 years), the costs of the project are compared with the discounted long-term benefits. Both costs and benefits accrue to the present generation, so the decision can be based on economic efficiency: are the discounted benefits of this project greater than the costs? Climate change decisions are different in that the benefits accrue to future generations. This brings up the issue of intergenerational equity and the discount rate that will give us the amount of equity that we deem appropriate.

This book is fairly easy to read and understand. It is not too technical. It includes articles that are ethical in nature, and those that are mathematical and quantitative. This is an excellent introduction for anyone interested in discount rates, project evaluation, cost-benefit analysis, and equity among generations.

Great for all lovers of poetry or dragons!
I'm an adult but I collect children's books. Why? Because of books like this one. I love any collection of poetry of a theme, and this one is wonderful. I love poems, I love dragons, I love this book! I'm going to get several of them for Christmas gifts for both children and adults. The choice of poems is unbelievable. Who knew there were so many poems about dragons? And the illustrations are so cute, so funny, so amazing. The artist is some magical person who is a gift to our planet!
