Be Not Afraid--He Was Right
Beautiful...a beautiful way to begin the new millennium as we reflect upon excerpts from our most fearless and patient leader.

A priest read a page at a mass during a homily and I was hooked on the idea to make this a daily devotional part of my prayers. These short insights into the human condition allow me to pray for us all.

good manual
I never had interest in chemistry (and probably never will) but I found this book easier than most. By easier I do not mean that there is not much content, but the way of writing and the explainations are given in simple terms, making it better than most books. Many concepts which were greek to me were easily understood, and the excersises were designed to make a person think and apply knowledge. It is a good book, but then again, unless you're interested in chemistry this book won't magically pour knowledge of chemistry into your head. All this does is make you learn chem the way it should be learned, by understanding and applying knowledge. Among most of the chem books i've come across I'd rate this as one of the best. This manual is useful for lab exercises, if you're a student. After using this book a lot of lab excersises were very very easy to me, and I understood concepts more than by listening to the professor.

Excellent
An Excellent text. Full of useful information on the daily uses of chemistry. Well written, great CD-ROM. Many texts use CD-ROMS, but few are able to place students in a virtual laboratory to the extent that this production does. Very nice graphics, nice problems, and useful tutorials for all aspects of the chemistry these authors are trying to cover.

VALUE THE GIFT
A few days before Christmas nine-year-old Marcel and his family are driving to their new house--an old farm deep in the snowy woods, then get lost. Luckily they find an old hotel which at first seemed to be closed. Marcel is fascinated by their quaint but kindly host, Pappy, who promises to provide them with directions to their destination the next day.

But the man mysteriously disappears, leaving them only an unsigned, unaddressed Christmas card, which has no words--just a curious sketch of the woods. Marcel gradually realizes that this card is a kind of map to their new home, yet it is much more than that. It is a Magic card, which changes to reflect conditions of the real world outside--of time, light and location.

Still Marcel experiences alternating fear and peace in the days preceding the Christian holiday, as a result of the card's shifting hints. The family of four is confused by the mysterious fire glowing in the old cabin; did they just stumble upon a meeting and inadvertantly drive the people away? Secular and sacred connotations combine to make a fascinating, enjoy-in-one-sitting read. Will Marcel ever see his beloved Pappy again--just who and what is he anyway? A literary chiaroscuro where the Light combats the Darkness and a young boy tries to choose the right path and make the best "trade."

Great introduction to the subject
THis work comes out of the "Braaten/Jenson Ecumenical Center" which has provided so many great books on Christian reunion. The center isn't called that, but those two untiring Christians have done so much that it should be named after them!

Now this book doesn't solve any problems per se, but it does put them into context and it avoids the unhelpful, silly, and unscholarly straw man arguments that the cheaper scholarship throws out as to why we should be Catholic or Protestant or Orthodox or "Protholidox"! WHile it is a great book for those interested in reunion, it is certainly a must-read for those who have read Ut Unum Sint, "that all may be one".

See my review of Brian Tierney's "Origins of Papal Infallibility" for a great selection of books that deal indepth with the subject of reunion between east and west as it relates to the papacy. Enjoy!

John Eadie on EPHESIANS
First published circa 1856, this copy is just that -- a copy in paperback format. As a copy, some of the beautiful typography is preserved, the Greek font and the Syriac especially are very attractive.

Eadie loves God's word, and his love for it is everywhere evident in this commentary. It is laid out on a verse by verse basis, so a limited context is visible, but it is limited. However, in his introduction he also lays out a general "outline" in English of the entire epistle. Also in his xlvi page introduction Eadie dialogues with several earlier commentators who submit, for example, that Paul started this church himself in Colosse (which Eadie corrects (i.e. that Paul personally, himself, did not start this church)). As to the date, Eadie places it in the Roman imprisonment period of Paul's life (A. D. 62). Which date accords with the Biblical testimony. Indeed, this accordance to the Biblical authority is a mark of distinction in Eadie's works, he is very conservative with a plain basic respect for the Holy Writ.

Eadie presents the Greek text, and then discusses it along with notable variants. He reflects upon many of the earlier Greek texts, often Lachmann's and the TR, and he is free from most of the errors seen in works which rely upon the Nestle/Aland or UBS Greek texts. Unfortunately the commentary was made before the discoveries of the great Greek papyri (such as P-46).

Eadie gives an accurate definition of the Greek word for "mystery" at 1:26, but the reader must consult Eadie's sister volume on EPHESIANS to see there the definition for "mystery", thus for a thorough appreciation and understanding of Colossians -- the reader needs both volumes (Eadie's commentaries on Colossians AND Ephesians, also an excellent commentary!).

The volume is a GREAT commentary, giving us today a solid conservative view. Eadie adds substantially to the efforts of his predecessors. But perhaps the lasting value of this great work, is that his corrections to the liberal theories and speculations of his day are still needed today, as many of these liberal conjectures are still being espoused! It was Eadie's love for the word, which probably made one of his contemporaries (Charles Ellicott) jealous of Eadie's labor!

A great and stimulating read, all scholars, students, pastors and laymen can benefit from the reissue of this classic and great commentary. A MUST HAVE for any Christian. Gary S. Dykes

Excellent resource for very serious Bible student
Eadie's commentary is a classic on the book of Ephesians. It does require a working knowledge of Biblical Greek. Eadie is able to do an intensely technical analysis of the book (including consideration of textual variants and commentary on the Greek text itself), while still also making practical and devotional observations which are very helpful. Eadie leaves you with the sense that you have really wrestled with the hard exegesis of a passage and and that you have gained from it a far greater awe of God, of the greatness of Christ, of the depths of your own depravity, and of the hope of a deeper walk with God. Again, it is for the very serious student of the Bible. One who is less than very serious or who does not want to labor over the Greek text will probably find the book hopelessly tedious. If however, one is willing to mine diamonds in concrete, you will find Eadie a truly rewarding expedition.

Funniest book in a bit
The book started off promising enough. I thought that at worst this book would give the reader a rough idea of what the British education system was about. That was what i gave me.. and then some more. I haven't laughed out loud reading a book in a while. And this book was a pleasant change. It give readers a overview of schooling from the view point of a growing up boy who comes from a semi-posh family in England. The usage of language in this book is unexpectedly funny and needless to say, the humour is real. Why i really like this 'Comp' is because the book flows as thought the writer is really a 14 year old boy. It didnt necessarily flow from one plot to another to be well written book. The author excellently captures the essence of being a young, regular and tirelessly naughty boy.

The deeper issues discussed are the evolution of the UK education system and the racial issues that come with it. A must read for those who miss the good old schooling days. Definitely written along the lines of Adrian Mole with a little bit more.
