Miniature Horses Their Care, Breeding&Coat Colors
Having been a breeder of Miniature Horses for over 12 years I have often been frustrated by the lack of accurate printed information to suggest to other Miniature Horse beginners. This book is a MUST HAVE for anyone involved with Miniature Horses. It is very helpful to prospective owners in supplying information on just what to expect with the breed regarding care including types of housing and fencing. This book has been a long time coming. I suggest it to everyone who comes to my farm to look at horses.

Worth twice the price!
This book should be required reading for every miniature horse owner/breeder. The chapter on coat color alone is worth the price. The chapter on conformation is wonderful, easily understood, should result in less of a population of pot bellied, short-legged horses. Finally a comprehensive reference on this endearing breed of horse.

A "must have" book for all miniature horse lovers.
This informative book will be an asset to anyone interested in miniature horses, from the novice to the expert. Very easy to understand with a great layout that makes it easy to find exactly what you are looking for. It includes a wide range of subjects, from purchasing to selling, and everything in between. It also has the history of the Miniature Horse and a beautiful color photo section to help understand the various coat colors. Probably the most informative Miniature Horse book on the market.

Praise for Waldman's translation
Easy enough to refer to a prose translation as "appropriate for the masses," but the fact remains that when a translator is freed from the necessity of forcing a poem to conform to rhyme and meter in a second language, he has access to a broader range of vocabulary and is therefore more able to remain true to the spirit of the original (as Waldman deftly explains in his introduction). Is it any wonder that this work has received so little attention in America when past translations have been so hidebound and pedagogical? Orlando Furioso is anything but a sing-songy, staid old verse.

In Waldman's translation are to be found both the idealised virtues of chivalry and sometimes startlingly lowbrow humor, all wrapped up in an epic tale of adventure, romance and magic. By providing an unabridged translation (another shortcoming of more traditional editions), and by attempting to capture the true flavor of the work rather than slavishly abiding by the dictates of classical poetic rules, he has presented to English readers for the first time a tale that rivals the epics of Homer in its scope and aspiration. And for sheer entertainment value (coupled with the elitism of Ariosto's sly jabs at the very people for whom the work was composed), this work is all but impossible to beat-- his original audience, after all, was not the literati, but the idle rich.

A delightful giant
Ariosto was one of the giants of Renaissance literature, and this was his footprint. Grand, touching, funny, witty, stirring -- as Dryden said of Chaucer, here is the world's plenty. Some of the greatest poets of the next two centuries (Tasso, Spenser, Milton) explicitly attempted to overdo him, and only sometimes succeeded; Byron took as much from Ariosto as he did from Pulci.

But don't read this on that account. Read it because it's a delight from start to finish. War, love, and chivalry are the poet's themes, and they're here in all their forms.

I don't know Italian, but everyone I've asked who would know assures me Reynolds's translation captures not just the essence but the spirit of the original.

(Ignore the reviews that claim that this is a prose translation -- they are from another translation.)

Orlando Furioso
Before anything else is said, it should be known that this edition is a prose translation, which does not retain most poetic characteristics of the original poem although for a modern English reader this is probably the best edition yet: fairly clear and still interesting in its own way. Orlando Furioso is a 16th century epic poem dealing with Charlamgne's wars against the "Saracens" who had (if we are to take the poem as historical fact) even reached the point of besieging the city of Paris. Of course, the book was not meant by its author to be historically accurate in any way, merely a parody of chivalric court legends as the book description says. Whoever reads this book and fails to sense irony on every page, even crude jokes in some parts clearly does not understand what he is reading in the least. But Orlando Furioso is not a parody of just chivalric court legends; it also pokes fun at the Illiad, popular tales and even common peasant stories. The heads (complete with helmets) sliced in two by a single sword blow are taken from The Illiad, in which Greek champions perform similar feats, although in Orlando Furioso, literally hundreds of men meet their end in this manner to the point of becoming amusing in a way. And I found it strange to notice a very clear similarity between the story told by an innkeeper in the book and the prologue to a translation of a 13th century version of the Arabian Nights (translated by Hussain Haddawy). Ariosto had no possible way to know of the existence of the Nights, but still it is interesting to see how truly close the two incidents are: In Orlando, two men who have given up on the possibility of women being chaste, take one woman and watch her day and night, yet she still deceives them in their own bed. In the Nights, a demon has locked his wife inside an impenetrable castle, yet she still deceives him as he sleeps right next to her in bed. The two events are described similarly, with the same irony (being meant as a joke which the author denies believing in in the least). The book is funny only in the way reading Candide is funny. This is simply another example of what makes the book enjoyable. During the reading of Orlando, somewhere about 3/4 of the way into the book, the reader may wish that it would end right there and that two characters; Bradamant and Ruggiero should get married and finish the story. But the continuation of their separation and further adventures is just another parody of common legends, exaggerated out of proportion. In the end, with all its jokes and its surprisingly individualistic narrative technique, its more serious scenes (the most touching of which is when a woman named Isabel is killed) forms into a large picture, with a great deal of good atmosphere, such that when it ends (although the reader may not have been touched very much during its reading) will want it to go on.

Extremely useful information.
This book is filled with excellent information. The one minute to better posture produced very quick results. When I changed my workstation as specified in this book, my neck stopped hurting. The tips for adjusting car seat, a life saver. I thought my poor posture was hopeless but the info and exercises in this book really delivered. The best $12 bucks I've ever spent. I highly recommend this book. I saw the author on the Oprah Winfrey show and was very impressed.

Florence Nightingale: Mystic, Visionary, Healer
This beautiful book is the most comprehensive and creative examintation I have ever read of the life of this remarkable woman. The book is profusely illustrated. Many of the images are in full color and have not been previously printed. Words and images combine to produce insights of incredible depth and beauty. The author's straightforward and readable writing style reminds readers of Nightingale's own writings. Clearly, Dossey has a connection with the fascinating Miss Nightingale that spans the boundaries of time and space. This is lucky for us, the readers of this sesntive portrait of one of the most amazing women in history. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone interested in feminist history, healing, the path of the mystic, leadership, or the history of nursing. It will surely become a classic in its genre!

Florence Nightingale brought to life
As a nurse and amateur Florence Nightingale historian, I was so excited to find this book. The content did not disappoint me. It offers the best coverage of the life of this extraordinary woman I've seen or read. This book is exciting, informative, and beautiful.

Nightingale transformed healthcare in the nineteenth century, and built a foundation for modern nursing. Dossey's clear writing, coupled with her extensive research, presents an enjoyable, comprehensive picture of the significance of Nightingale's life. The historical photographs and illustrations complemented the text and were a delight to view.

I recommend the book to anyone interested in nursing, history or the biography of an amazing woman. Thank you Barbara Dossey for bringing Florence Nightingale to life in this wonderful book!

Florence Nightingale: Mystic, Visionary, Healer
The life and accomplishments of Florence Nightingale is an extremely difficult subject to examine. This complex and multi-facted women had an amazing intellect driven by her profound spirituality and and need to improve the well-being of mankind. Barbara Dossey is to be commended for her excellent biography which goes well beyond the usual recounting of dates and events. This volume is beautifully illustrated and analyzes many of the persistent issues which have surrounded Nighitngale including her extended illness. There is a well-developed analysis of Nightingale's motivators and motivations. This volume should be of interest to the general reading public as well as nurses.

Give Yourself a Present by Focusing on Your Future
This unassuming book is the best tool I have found to identify my personal and professional priorities. "Free to Succeed" served as a launchpad for me to think creatively about how I can take control of my work life, and keep the personal and professional in balance. The profiles of real-life clients ground the text, making it easy to see myself and my situation more clearly. The activities helped me to develop and individualized short and long term career plans. This book is a career counselor between two covers.

excellent book!
I would like to thank Barbara for all her advice and wisdom.

I truly enjoyed and appreciated this book. Even though I may not ultimately become a free agent, I loved the way she talked about designing your life according to your own needs and wants. She makes soul searching a little easier with some innovative and creative questions and exercises. I've been recommending this book to many of my friends who are beginning to debate about all their choices.

I look forward to more thoughts and books from her!

I highly recommend this book
I run a mentoring services company, working with corporations to set up online mentoring programs. I recommend this book frequently to program participants. The book is designed to help people think about whether they want to leap into free agency but I think it's equally good as a career development guide for anyone who's feeling stuck or thinking about a change. There are some great exercises to help you assess your current life / career situation and figure out a next step - with free agency being one of many possibilities. I wish I had read this when I was thinking about leaving corporate life and starting a business. I wouldn't have done anything differently but it would have given me better perspective.

fine,never-before-seen photographs of most icons
The book was representative of true icons in our century, though other African Americans such as Jimi Hendrix , Sidney Poitier, and Diana Ross were worthy of inclusion as opposed to Michael Jackson or Oprah Winfrey. The information accompanying each icon was valuable as well, because there were several I was not familiar with.

An excellent, well-designed & -illustrated book
But, alas, too American in the perspective. The selection includes people who are only of importance in the U.S. area. I.e. baseball & football players and t.v. entertainers (Oprah!)And in choosing Oppenheimer and Fermi instead of the far more important Niels Bohr. Further, Karen Blixen is presented by her alias Isak Dinesen - quite embarassing. The photos, though, are phantastic and the layout creative. In spite of an American chauvenism in the selection, the book makes a brilliant statement heading for the millennium.

Send in the proofreaders!
All kidding aside, this is a fantastic volume for the end of the century. The one-page articles are informative and well-written, and the b&w photographs are quite striking--I never imagined I'd see a photo of Mikhail Gorbachev hand-feeding a squirrel! I was, however, taken aback to see "Queen Elizabeth I" listed as an icon of the 20th century. I'm sure Elizabeth Tudor (1533-1603) and The Queen Mother would get a kick out of that! (Actually, this is pretty funny, coming from a book published by "The Overlook Press".) Enough of my carping: I highly recommend this book to every home in the country, and imagine it being a treasured posession in fifty years or so--especially by the children now who are too young to have known of any of these fascinating people. Thanks, Santa Claus--great choice!

No, really, this book did change my life!
At a difficult point in my career, I turned to this book to help me move to something new. I followed the steps described and it really worked. I had a dream of teaching environmental ethics at university, and now I am! A great thing about this book is that it is really written for sceptics like me who can't stand self-help books. Barbera Sher is particularly suspicious of resolutions and positive affirmations. She states quite clearly that you don't have to improve your character in order to get a good life - good news indeed! Another great thing about this book is that, just as she promises, all the exercises suggested are actually fun. This book moved me from a place of despondancy to a widening sense of wonder and excitement in life. Could you ask for more than that?

Better than self-help: SELF-UNDERSTANDING
This is one of the best books I have read for improving and understanding your life.

The premise of the book is that you can't force yourself to be "successful" or happy. The success gurus generally tell you to discipline yourself, to use the power of choice, to take more action. As Barbara Sher points out, these philosophies have mixed results because people can rarely discipline themselves for very long to do things that they don't feel like doing.

Maybe you know that you need to contact certain people to get started on the path towards something you love, but somehow you never get around to it? We need to understand that this doesn't happen just because we are weak and undisciplined -- there's a REASON for our behavior. This book awakened me to the concept of resistance. There are many different possible reasons that we experience resistance to doing things that we know we need to do. But if we try to just force ourselves to do things, then inevitably it will become too uncomfortable and we will quit, or "forget" about it.

In addition to resistance the book describes how to awaken yourself to things that you might love to do, and gives numerous techniques for helping you on the path to doing them. I will refer to this book again and again as I pursue my goals and dreams.

Overall this book is much better organized and written than her book "I could do anything, if only I knew what it was". That book does have some other useful material, but I would only recommend reading it after "Live the Life You Love..." if you are still hungry for more of her insight.

The only book you'll need to get you on track with your life
This is a really good book. It's very straight forward with none of the usual self-help fluffy stuff to get in the way. It helps you learn what motivates you and how to get the support you need from yourself. Then it gets you thinking about what you *really* want and how to get it. This and The Joy of Simple Living by Jeff Davidson are the only two "self-help" books most people will ever need. (If you are female add Real Gorgeous by Kaz Cooke to that list.)

Junie Jones Is Not a Crook
Book review
By Rebecca

The book that I am reading is Junies B. Jones Is Not a Crook. Her grandfather gave her some mittens. It wasn't her birthday or Christmas or Valentines Day. This is a funny story.

Junie B. Jones Is Not A Crook- or is she?
In the book Junie B. Jones Is Not A Crook by Barbara Park a girl named Junie B. Jones gets new mittens and they are so furry. Her Grampa Miller gave them to her. At recess when she is playing someone steels her mittens. If you want to find out if she gets her mittens back you have to read this book. It's great!

NCLEX-RN 2000-2001 Edition
This book was very helpful in illuminating new ways for me to approach NCLEX questions. The book offers various "paths" or "strategies" to help break down NCLEX questions. With these approaches it is much easier to eliminate answer choices in order to get to the correct answer. The only thing I do not particularly like is the CD-rom that accompanies the book. You are only allowed 2 chances to test because you have to use authorization numbers. I have children and have to tend to them as well as preparing myself for this test. I need more time to practice with the CD-rom and this book/CD-rom kit did not provide me with that extra time or with a CD-rom that I could use more than just one time.

Terrific publication for those taking NCLEX-RN!!!
This book is great--it shows how to take the NCLEX-RN, and gives example questions with each test-taking point. It even compares it to possible questions we had while in nursing school. It does have one drawback--you can only use the test on the CD once; if you don't finish the test you may use it again, but that is it. Kaplan shows HOW to think through the questions and answers, with an NCLEX mindset.

Kaplan's NCLEX-RN 200-2001 edition
I found this book to be very helpful, especially using their critical thinking strategies. The strategies help you maintain focus and not get distracted by obviously erroneous answers. This book aso includes a nice chapter on Maslow, and how, by using the Maslow method to eliminate answers, test taking is much less difficult. The cd rom that is included with the text is also very good, especially when reviewing. It catagorizes your weak areas and also gives you the correct answer, with rationalization. I took the cd rom test before reading the book, and then again, when I had finished the book. I found my score improved using the Kaplan strategies about 33%. I highly recommend this book and cd rom.
