Summer Reading Fun
As an accomplished and dedicated grandmother, I would like to recommend Mr. McTaggart's book to other who, like myself, enjoy reading to their grandchildren. These stories are very readable and interesting enough to hold the attention of an active 6-year-old boy. He especially enjoyed "The Forgetful Squirrel." As a retired coordinator of a program which provided literacy training to adults, I am fully aware of the importance of reading to children. It can make a great difference in a child's life. Buy this book and try it!

A Companion Reader of Ten Christmas Stories
Although the cover states that " A Companion Reader of Ten Christmas Stories" is meant to be enjoyed by children from 2 to 10 years old, this 60-plus grandpa found the stories to be very interesting, as well.

Additionally, I think that the grandkids had a great time listening to them too. Mr. McTaggart has written a good assortment of wholesome tales that come with good moral points. They're short enough so you can string 2 or 3 of them together if the kids ask for "just one more."

Another interesting feature that I haven't seen in any children's book is in the table of contents. The author supplies reading times for each story! Believe me, that comes in handy if the little ones have to go to bed at a certain time!

The book is bound with very sturdy covers, to make it relatively kid-resistant, as well. (as if anything could be!) It's also generously illustrated with black- and-white drawings. Try it, and I think you and the young ones will both have a very enjoyable experience!

An all inclusive everything about blocks book.
Talk about complete! The author wasn't kidding when he titled it "The Complete Block Book". This book is an interesting look at the use and popularity of blocks over the past 200 years. You will learn everything you ever wanted to know about blocks including their use in educational settings, the different types of blocks available, the benefits to children, why blocks are considered educational toys, how best to set up a block corner, and which educators and philosophers influenced the popularity of blocks. Also, this book gives a very good historical overview of the emergence of "play as work" as a concept in children's education.

Computer Music in C
Published in Paperback by Windcrest (1991)
Authors: Phil Winsor, Gene Delisa, and Eugene De Lisa
Amazon base price: $24.95
Used price: $5.00
Average review score:

Explore algorithmic composition and get good results.
All Phil Winsor's books have a common theme - the various mathematical algorithms (probability, filtering, shaping melodic lines, etc). One of the books provides C code, the others all provide BASIC code. He discusses such subjects as stochastic composition, development of melody via various mathematical functions, rhythm and harmony using mathematical functions, etc. He doesn't go into more advanced algorithms such as using Markov Chains, neural networks, or AI. His book, "Automated Music Composition" is intended for use with his MusicSculptor package in that the various programs create output files suitable for use with this software. It seems to me that all his books contain roughly the same information, so if you get his latest book "Automated Music Composition", you will have the gist of his previous books. I would say his books are more accessible than some of the more esoteric writings by MIT press. Winsor's books are loaded with code that actually works using whatever algorithm is being discussed. So I am not sure anything is to be gained by detailing each book separately. Winsor's books all cover the same material. "Computer Music in C" is the C language version of "The Composer's Toolbox" which is in BASIC. "Automated Music Composition" is also in BASIC. But they all cover the same material, though "Automated Music Composition" provides more initial coverage of putting together a MIDI system and how his algorithms fit into the overall scheme of music making. It is as if one can see an evolutionary development of his ideas through the span of time over which he has written his books. By the way, if you have a PC and MPU-401 midi card, you will want to consider purchasing his MusicSculptor program and the book "Automated Music Composition". With these two pieces, you can freely explore algorithmic composition and get good results.

Conceptual Foundations of Modern Particle Physics
Published in Hardcover by World Scientific Pub Co (1993)
Author: Robert Eugene Marshak
Amazon base price: $99.00
Average review score:

excellent
This is a very good book. It is not intented to be an undergraduate
or graduate book. Rather it is a research book which assumes
knowledge (good knowledge) of advanced quantum mechanics.

It is very well organized, with very good presentation
of the rational of breakthroughs in quantum field mechanics
an extremely good presentation of QFD (quantum flavor dynamics)
and with a deep understanding of the related concepts. You wont
find 'how to do' calculations.

If you have a working knowledge of quantum mechanics of fields
and you want an overview of particle physics, this is
definitely the book for you.

A compelling and deeply personal memoir
This memoir was hard to put down. Goodheart courageously examines and reveals his past, his relationships to family, colleagues and friends with an honest study of a secular Jew growing up in America in the second half of the 20th Century. Left wing politics, furious clashes with the intellectual establishment, a high adventure journey through the mind, its all here packed into 262 pages of vivid prose.

Conquering Psoriasis: An Illustrated Guide to the Understanding and Control of Psoriasis
Published in Paperback by BC Decker Inc (2002)
Authors: Eugene M. MD Farber and Lexie Nakk
Amazon base price: $13.95
Average review score:

An excellent handbook for people with psoriasis ...
This is a small handbook for psoriasis patients, using language that any high school graduate can understand. Numerous illustrations and case summaries help explain what psoriasis is, how it is triggered, and how it can be treated. Each chapter concludes with a list of "Facts to Remember" that highlights do1s and dont1s for the patient. Especially notable is the concluding chapter, "It's Up To You," which encourages the reader to take a pro-active role in controlling the disease. Also notable is the chapter on "Total Care," which emphasizes the importance of each patient1s general health and lifestyle as they relate to his or her psoriasis. As one who has struggled with psoriasis for 35 years, I am especially glad to have so much valuable information summarized in one small book. Even more important, I believe, is the overall message: that we patients are capable of understanding the basics of psoriasis, and with optimism and persistance, can do a great deal to help ourselves. Dermatologists should present this book to every psoriasis patient over 12 years of age, especially in this era of managed care. Three minutes with the doctor and another prescription simply cannot provide the information and encouragement that are so important to psoriasis patients.
