Mini-sized guide with maxi-helpful information
The Opera Journeys Mini Guide Series is just wonderful; it's like a "Cliff Note" of the opera, and extremely informative and educational. I particularly like the size; these guides are not cumbersome and fit right into my shirt pocket. The ladies will find sufficient room in their pocketbooks.

The story narrative with the music examples is excellent. I prefer it to a libretto; indeed, it's a much easier way to follow the essence of the story. The essay is magnificent; very well written, not pedantic, and extremely insightful and comprehensible. I congratulate Burton Fisher for a job very well done and Amazon for making these handy, information-laden booklets available. The Opera Journeys Mini Guide Series is a wonderful contribution to opera education and opera appreciation.

My tip: acquire the entire collection because you will be in easy reach of superbly presented opera guides consisting of story analysis, principal characters in the opera, story narrative with music highlights, background, analysis, and commentary.

Excellent textbook
Incredibly insightful, very thorough book, worth every penny. This is more than just a textbook; it should have been called a reference book. You will find yourself looking back upon this innumerable times. A very technical work, it is not an "easy read" for someone outside this field, but certainly understandable to those professionals and students familiar with biological sciences.

A very interesting and informative book
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. My review may be found in "Art History" vol. 21, no. 3 (September 1998), 445-48. In the reiew I mention: "It offers the first extensive twentieth century analysis of Reni's personality and environment. Spear's relatively non-reductive research methodology is an interesting shift of study 'from the "outside" to the "inside"' of the subject (Spear p. 9). This method is used in addition to the standard revisionist focus on the artist from his/her own time, rather than from our time. 'The "Divine" Guido' is a welcome addition to the new historicist studies from publishers such as Yale University, Cambridge University, Prentice Hall and Thames & Hudson."

Best of Guido Crepax
This hardcover volume is the definitive collection of Guido Crepax's erotic comics. The inventive page layouts and the expressive line work are beautifully reproduced on high quality, glossy paper. There's so much wonderful material here it might even be too much of a good thing...Crepax overload. Be sure to check out the companion "O" volume, both are top-notch productions.

The Hernandez-Weiss wavelet book
The Hernandez-Weiss book is a great source in mathematics, where the reader can learn about
some fundamental and timeless tools of wavelet analysis. The presentation is clear and self contained. The book is great for an upper level analysis course, as well as for self study. Its emphasis is centered around the
multiresolution method, and it has both the basics in the subject, and
some exciting new results,-- those due
to the co-authors, as well as those of the analysts in the extended "Wash U-family" of researchers. It has a wealth of new material that
came after the 1992 classic of I. Daubechies ("Ten lectures on wavelets" SIAM ).The presentation in Hernandez-Weiss of, for example,
multiplicity theory and the dimension function is great for
the student who wishes to pick up the central ideas, or to
learn the details, step by step. The book contains both history and
motivation, and it points the reader towards a variety of exciting and timeless applications.

Gambler's Daughter
Published in Paperback by Guernica Editions (2002)
Author: Rachel Guido deVries
Amazon base price: $10.00
Average review score:

Poetry Lives!
Rachel Guido deVries' new book of poetry, Gambler's Daughter, reminds me of the serenity & the multi colors of nature: spring gardens, summer lakes, autumn trees. Yet all the while a Northern New York State winter is building for an old-time knock down, drag out, momentous lake-effect storm. But as a metaphor, that is life everywhere. Loss, gain & many changes fill life & deVries' poetry.

The poet yearns for silence, is aware of life's solitariness & longs for belonging. deVries sees life as it is, grieves for her losses & is buoyed by the spirit of nature & love. She celebrates life by loving with charming panache: "purple overalls, rounded eggplants/ and plums." (Lover in the Garden)

deVries' word-pictures are stunning. The imagery contains an almost Zen-like Haiku feeling. The image of the crow diving down in "Prayer" endures because the rest of the poem gives it a wonderful home to live in. It belongs & so does this book.

Truly classic poetry that transcends centuries
Guido Cavalcanti: The Other Middle Ages by Maria Luisa Ardizzone (Department of Italian Studies, New York University) presents a fascinating and scholarly examination of the life and work of the renowned Italian poet of the late thirteenth century, Guido Cavalcanti, who is especially his famously complex poem "Donna me prega". An meticulously researched study placing Cavalcanti's work within the context of the intellectual history of the European era, as well as comparing Cavalcanti and his work with that of Dante, Guido Cavalcanti is a highly recommended addition to Italian literary studies collections as it offers an fresh and innovative reading of a truly classic poetry that transcends centuries.

An excellent catalog of the work of Guido Reni
I know the italian edition, that I think is more complete than the english one, it has an excellent catalog about the work of Guido, including some old copies, attributions and new discoveries. It has also some very good color reproductions of the pictures, with most of them in black and white. It has also a list of the places where the paintings are exhibited, and the history and previous owners of most of them. Dr. Stephen Pepper is one of the best speciallists in Italian picture of the XVII century and his work is most important for somebody interested in Guido Reni and in Italian Painting
