An Essential and Indispensable Guide
The Encyclopedic Dictionary of Yoga is an invaluable and absolutely indispensable guide for students of Yoga, Samkhya, and Vedanta. Comprehensive in both scope and depth, it lucidly explains the terminology used in these Eastern religions, covering the most basic concepts to the most esoteric. This dictionary is a remarkable achievement and is a reflection of Georg Feuerstein's standing as a scholar of the highest order. I have referred to this book often. I shall refer to it again and again.

Studies the early roots of yoga
If you are a fan of Georg Feuerstein's writings, this book resembles the Philosophy of Classical Yoga in that it is written for the more intermediate, advanced or scholarly yoga student as it reviews yoga's early roots in the Vedic tradition, while relating the study to the Christian mystic, Meister Eckhart. From her expertise in the Vedas, co-author Jeanine Miller offers her insights that help the Vedas come alive for the reader and realize how the yoga of today springs forth from a 5,000 year old tradition.

Effective description
I do not believe that there exists a more effective description of the institutional arrangements surrounding the ECB. The Author has managed to describe these arrangements and place them in their historical and political context with much clarity. Nor has he avoided controversy, such as the political autonomy question. However the approach is objective throughout. There has been disappointingly little public debate within Europe on these issues. This book will both stimulate and inform such a debate. This is its lasting contribution.

Extremes and Related Properties of Random Sequences and Processes: Springer Series in Statistics
Published in Hardcover by Springer Verlag (1983)
Author: M.R.; Lindgren, Georg and Rootzen, Holger Leadbetter
Amazon base price: $55.00

classic reference text on extreme value theory
Leadbetter, Lindgren and Rootzen produced this classic text on extreme value theory in 1983. The first text on the theory and application of extremes was the book by Gumbel in 1958. Gumbel only dealt with the original result of Gnedenko which dealt with independent and identically distributed random variables. Galambos in 1978 came out with the first text to cover the dependent situation in detail. This text provided a more detailed and up-to-date account and unified some of the theory. It also provided some applications and gave an account of extreme value theory based on the point processes associated with level crossings. I was very pleased to see the first account of my thesis research on extremes for stationary processes covered in this text.

The book has not yet been revised and there are several recent books that include recent advances in theory and applications.

This text is still a major reference on my bookshelf and is probably the most commonly cited text in the literature on extreme values. As an example in the December 1999 issue of the journal Extremes (which specializes in the statistical theory and application of extreme values) this book is referenced in three of the four articles in that issue.

From Hegel to Marx
Published in Hardcover by Columbia University Press (15 October, 1994)
Authors: Sidney Hook, Christopher Phelps, and Sydney Hook
Amazon base price: $66.00
Used price: $13.98

From Hegel to Marx-
Sidney Hook analyzes the two philosophers utilizing opposition among Hegelian and Marxist theory: ethical idealism, dialectics, and continuity. This allows the reader to adopt the differences between the two influential authors, thereby introducing major theories written by Marx and Hegel. The remaining chapters interject comparisons between Karl Marx and esteemed German philosophers who studied Hegel, contributed or correlated with Marxist philosophy. Overall, the text forms an essential basis to the understanding and development of Marxist philosophy, and the struggles of a young-Hegelian in the nineteenth century.

From Normal to Healthy: Paths to the Liberation of Consciousness
Published in Paperback by Lindisfarne Books (1989)
Author: Georg Kuhlewind
Amazon base price: $14.95
Average review score:

The greatest Self-Improvement book of all time!
This is the very first book that anyone who is interested in spirituality, psychology, anthroposophy, or self-improvement should read. Kuhlewind starts the book off analyzing speaking and thinking, describes why we should use our "superconscious" faculties more than out subconscious ones. Our subconscious faculties lie in the habitual, mechanical realm. In this state our thoughts simply bounce around, going from one association to the next. Association is not thinking, it is mechanical and animalistic. Superconscious abilities, on the other hand, are what we used as children. We were able to learn, see, and experience a great deal more as children than as adults simply because we used our superconscious abilities. Once these things have been learned through our superconscious, our energies used to do them again slowly start to come from the subconscious more and more (think of the first time you saw a particular place.. how rich, new and alive everything you encountered was. Then think of the second, third, fourth and so on, times that you saw this place. Not as powerful of an impression, huh?) Kuhlewind then goes on to describe, in the greatest detail, particular excercises that help free energies from the subconscious where they can be properly used in the superconscious domain. Reading the book is, in itself, a teriffic excercise, as it is incredibly demanding of the reader's attention. It is not a book that is difficult to understand, but because we are not used to dealing with concepts such as these, or with thinking in this way, it can be a bit challenging at times. (...)Hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

G.W.F. Hegel: The Letters

If you are not ready to read Hegel, read this
Of all the books that I've read about Hegel's philosophy in the past twenty years, this book by Howard P. Kainz stands out as the one best suited for the beginner. Dr. Kainz is a world class scholar on this topic and his overview is simply the best I have ever read. (Before 1996 my favorite overview of Hegel was the first part of Ilyenkov's, DIALECTICAL LOGIC. After 1996 my favorite overview is this book by Dr. Kainz.)

What I like most about this book is that it works hard to reach the new student. Dr. Kainz removes all jargon and technical language, except to define the more common terms used by the experts in the field. He also includes diagrams to help explain complex abstract concepts. It is not often that a professor works so diligently to reach his students. He also succeeds in making his language contemporary and easy-to-read.

Dr. Kainz covers the whole gamut of Hegel's corpus and provides high-level overviews of most key ideas in Hegel's philosophy. I wish I had this book in the 1980's when I was struggling with the literature on Hegel, but in fact Dr. Kainz' book was probably not possible until 1996 because the scholarship on Hegel had to undergo a major change - it had to break away from the literature of Marxism and only the fall of the USSR could make that possible. The scholarship on Hegel since the fall of the USSR is very different - I say superior - compared with the scholarship before that period. This is due partly to English translations (finally) of all of Hegel's main works, and partly to the recognition that Hegel is not only widely different from Marx, but his work may better stand the test of time.

Howard P. Kainz is a world-renowned expert in Hegel scholarship. He is not always an advocate of Hegel's thought and he can ask some very pointed questions and offer some very critical comments. However, Dr. Kainz makes use of the latest Hegel scholarship so the new student benefits enormously. If you are thinking about reading Hegel and have seen how difficult it can be, and so are looking for a brief, high-level, yet comprehensive critique of Hegel's thought, this book is for you. I give it five stars.

Gaspard's Latest Adventure.....
Gaspard, an adorable black dog with a blue scarf, tells us all about his recent medical emergency. He had a new key chain with a little race car attached. "Everyone at school wanted it, but it was MINE." Gaspard was so afraid that a classmate would steal it, that he decided to hide it where no one could take it, in his mouth. Of course, the unthinkable happens, and he swallows it. Fortunately his teacher knew just what to do. She called an ambulance and off Gaspard went to the hospital..... Anne Gutman and Georg Hallensleben are back with another marvelous Gaspard and Lisa adventure. Ms Gutman's simple and straightforward text is gentle and reassuring as Gaspard tells us all about his hospital stay, the ambulance ride and x-ray, the surgery that didn't hurt because he was asleep and dreaming, and doctors and nurses who knew just what to do and took good care of him. "They were right, I didn't feel a thing. When I woke up, it was already night. My parents were right there, and Mom gave me a great big package." Mr Hallensleben's rich, lush, vibrant illustrations are cheerful and expressive. Gaspard In The Hospital is just the latest in a terrific series for preschoolers and emerging readers. Start at the beginning with Lisa's Airplane Trip and Gaspard On Vacation, and read them all.

Genesis and Structure of Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit
Published in Hardcover by Northwestern University Press (1975)
Authors: Jean. Hyppolite, John Heckman, and Samuel Cherniak
Amazon base price: $58.00
Used price: $47.95
Average review score:

An exceptionally lucid exposition of the Phenomenology
In his introduction to the Phenomenology of Spirit, Hegel himself says that "[the] road can therefore be regarded as the pathway of doubt, or more precisely as the way of despair." Though Hegel didn't intend for that sentence to relate to reading the Phenomenology, I'm sure many readers felt that way while making their way through that nearly inpenetrable and poorly translated text. Despite initial appearances, the Phenomenology does make sense, and there is no better guide to Hegel's difficult thought that Jean Hyppolite's Genesis and Structure of Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit. Hyppolite looks at the Phenomenology section by section and illuminates and concretizes Hegel's thought without reducing it. I wouldn't substitute this book for an actual reading of the Phenomenology (though it would probably work), but rather suggest that this commentary be used as an introduction to Hegel's Phenomenology or read concurrently with it. Highly recommended.
