Inspiring and revealing to classical music lovers.
This book is somewhat self-serving to the late Sir Georg, but it also brings a touching amount of humanity to one of the brightest recent stars of the classical music universe. These "intimate" memoirs are specially interesting given the high status awarded to great conductors and the have general perception that they are autocratic geniuses. Georg Solti does not display false modesty here, yet he does reveal sufficient elements of his ordinary life for us to understand how he developed his extraordinary artistic talent, and how he was eventually able to craft such a wonderful career by working on what he loved most: music.

Beautiful reproduction of an exquisite manuscript
This is an excellent reproduction of an exquisite manuscript produced during the last phases of the hand-written, hand-illuminated book. The introductory texts are concerned primarily with the history of the two artists responsible for the creation of this work, with some space devoted to its provenence and patron. The majority of pages are, of course, devoted to the plates themselves; no words can do justice to the art displayed therein. Commentary on the plates is mostly limited to identification of the various flora and fauna displayed on the pages

Multimedia Cartography

Potential cartography changes from multimedia
I think the book brings a very helpful review of the cartography state of art facing new tools to represent reality. It is balanced between theory and practical examples. Finally, it shows how multimedia will impact in the way we think and construct maps.

A fascianting biography of an extraodinary man
Nicoali is best remembered for his efforts to unite intelectuals against war, from 1914 to 1918, in association with Albert Einstein. Like Bertrand Russel, he was jailed for his pacifist ideals. His discoveries in medicine (cardiology) and biology (neuroscience) deserve greater recogintion. The book reads like a novel. Great research on the intellectual and political life in Germany during the early part of the century.

Off to Another World....
Every night, Papa kisses Alex good night, puts him to bed and then goes off to work. He's an engineer at a construction site and a night worker. While everyone else is home and in bed, sleeping, Papa is at work, doing his job. One special night, Papa gives Alex his own hard hat and together they go out into the night to Papa's job..... Kate Banks has written a gentle, endearing story full of imagery and magic that turns the quiet night into an unimagined busy place...full of street sweepers, delivery men, heavy machinery and cranes that dig holes, move earth, pour concrete and lift steel. Her simple easy to read text is complimented by Georg Hallensleben's wonderful, subdued artwork that will transport youngsters right to the job site, surrounding them with the sights, sounds and construction activity as the night workers go about their work. And as day begins to break, all is quiet and little Alex has gone to sleep, dreaming of becoming a night worker, too, when he grows up.

Family history in Picketts Division..
Have you been researching your GGGrandfather, uncle, cousin, determained that they were in General Picketts Division, and have wondered if they were in the charge, and what may have happened to them? Wanted to find out as much information about General Picketts Division at Gettysburg as possible?..I wondered, bought the book and found my GGrandfathers name on the company roster as being present, he was not on the list of unengaged personnel, so as much as historical research can determain he participated..There are 602 pages in this book, the first 173 tells about the actual charge and the events leading up to it. The remaining pages list every man by name in each company of every Regiment present. There are also lists of those killed, wounded, known burial locations, disinterments from the battlefield, unengaged personnel, and much more..If you are looking for a book about the men in Picketts Division at Gettysburg, written by the historian at Gettysburg, I have not came accross another that comes close .....

On Art, Religion, and the History of Philosophy: Introductory Lectures
Published in Hardcover by Hackett Pub Co (1997)
Authors: J. Glenn Gray and Georg Wilhelm Friedri Hegel
Amazon base price: $34.95
Average review score:

My first pick for the new student of Hegel's philosophy
For years people have asked me what a new student of Hegel should read
- what authors provide the best place to start? The sad truth is that
I find old and new authors to be lacking in important nuances of
Hegel's actual philosophy. Some authors distort Hegel's philosophy
unbearably. I find this to be true even in Encyclopedias that try to
reach the novice. For the brand new student, I can recommend very few
of them. Perhaps J. Glenn Gray agreed with me, because he has
produced an introduction to Hegel in Hegel's own words.

I always
recommend reading Hegel directly as soon as possible. The trouble
with that is, as most academics know, Hegel's writings are among the
most difficult to read. His SCIENCE OF LOGIC is for experts and
professionals only. His PHENOMENOLOGY, long touted as the best
introduction to Hegel (it was his first published book), is almost as
hard to read as his SCIENCE OF LOGIC, and for many reasons I advocate
reading this book very late in our studies. Hegel's ENCYCLOPEDIA
covers every topic in the world, and so that is a fine resource, but
it is hardly the best place to start and its style is very formal.

Seek no more. This small volume by J. Glenn Gray is perfect for the
student who is ready to start reading some Hegel. It includes three
of Hegel's easiest and most relaxed productions, namely, three
Introductions to his LECTURE series. Hegel's LECTURES on Art,
Religion and Philosophy (composed of his own notes and the notes of
some of his well-known students) are more accessible than his
technical writings because his spoken style is more relaxed than his
written style.

But his LECTURES are also very long -- several
volumes long. So, thanks to J. Glenn Gray, only the Introductions to
Hegel's key LECTURES have been compiled in one short volume. Here at
last the new student has some of the cream of Hegel's thinking, with
many important nuances, clearly and concisely stated and accessible to
beginners. Hegel's genius shines forth even in his Introductions to
his LECTURES, and J. Glenn Gray deserves much credit for compiling
this selection for today's English-reading student. Though some of
the translations are a bit older, they are still accessible. J. Glenn
Gray's gift to the common reader was a success, and I heartily
recommend this book.

Ontology of Social Being (Hegel)
Published in Paperback by Merlin Press (1980)
Author: Georg Lukacs
Amazon base price: $14.95
Used price: $66.18
Average review score:

Outstanding work of an outstanding mind
This is one of three published translated parts of an unfinished ontology Lukacs was working on at the end of his life. Lukacs returned to his critical roots of the 1920's when starting this project, though in a modified way, and much of his writing has the same freshness and insights as his masterpiece History and Class Consciousness. His basic point is that in order to revitalize Marxism it is necessary to develope from it an ontology that could explain labor as the fundamental category of being. He does this by analyzing Hegel and Marx in the other two published parts, not so much from an epistemological point of view but from the position of ontology. The ontology that emerges is founded in becoming rather than being, as change, flux, negation, and movement over stasis, permanence, and immobility (as in traditional ontology from the scholastics or as in Heidegger's work). This revolutionizing of ontology is Lukacs' attempt to make Marxism an interpretation of being--by doing so he is rejecting orthodox Marxist theory and attempting to give historical and dialectical materialism a renewed sense of relevance. It is well worth the trouble to hunt down a copy of it; we can only hope that more of his later works will be published in translation (especially his aesthetics).
