Knowing and History: Appropriations of Hegel in Twentieth-Century France

Of present Being in a delegitimated past
Powerful and informative analysis of complex trends in 20th Century French philosophic thought. With our growing consensus on the limits of knowledge, language, and the 'human', this text situates and clarifies the value and influence of Hegel minus metaphysics and the richness of Nietzschean inquiry still possible given Heidegger's ultimate limit of the return of the Same.

If we recognize Lacan's human-as-barred-subject, our only 'sensible' project, given one's structure, is pursuit of a 'reasonable' libidinal economy. History as parallel with no enlightened EndState leave us with the same injunction for social action. But we continue to insist "Che Vuoi?" Outstanding scholarship and wonderfully referenced.

The new Bible in Knowledge Management
This book will be a new bible in knowledge management, as was the Fifth Dimension (P.Senge)or the Knowledge-creating Company (Nonaka). It is one of the most interesting books available on knowledge management, for academics and practitioners. It provides a new vision of knowledge management and has a real value-added, compared to most of the books currently published in this area, which all propose the same ideas and success-stories. The editors and authors (among them Von Krogh, Ross, Blakler, Nonaka, Probst) are the best academics in the area, in America, Europe and Asia. Their theoretical background offer a comprehensive view of knowledge in organizations. They provide a new vision based on a constructivist and pragmatist approach of organizational knowledge and action, which contrast with the classical positivist school of thought. However, their book is not only for academics, but also for high-level managers concerned with implementing and measuring knowledge. The excellent quality of the conceptual background offers a basis for reflection, and they provide useful tools and examples of knowledge creation and measurement. The best book in this topic currently!

Interesting book about an interesting man
It is false that this book is ONLY for "mathematician fans and armchair philosophers" as the Amazon review insinuates. The book contains many mathematical and serious philosophical articles as well as invaluable personal information about one of the most interesting logicians of all times... Useful and inspiring. A good antidote against dessicated academics!

Very Useful Translation
This is a very practical and useful translation of Patanjali. It's thorough in it's analysis of the original text and is extremely helpful in instructing the reader on how to implement and practice the teachings.
If you are a student of Patanjali, this is a "Must Read."

Language and Death: The Place of Negativity (Theory and History of Literature, Vol 78)
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Minnesota Pr (Txt) (1991)
Authors: Giorgio Agamben, Karen E. Pinkus, and Michael Hardt
Amazon base price: $16.95

"Voice" - the instance of discourse
Agamben analyses the space of negativity in the thought of Hegel and Heidegger. Since Derrida, continential philosophies of language have critiqued traditional philosophy for privleging presence and treating signs as transparent conveyors of meaning. But Agamben, through exacting studies of Patristic and Medieval thought, demonstrates the tradition's awareness of the constitutive moment of absence in discourse. He contends that the deconstructionist critique of metaphysical thinking merely repeats an old problematic and fails to escape the difficulties it reveals. His corrective account of language and the place of negativity within it open a space for the human apart from reductive theories of the self as merely a social and linguistic construct.

Lenin: A Study in the Unity of His Thought (The Verso Classics Series)
Published in Paperback by Verso Books (1998)
Author: Georg Lukacs
Amazon base price: $15.00

Philosopher of Praxis
Lukács's biographical sketch was written just after Lenin's death, and was his personal response to the leader of the Russian Revolution. Following the Hegelian lines of his main early theoretical work, "History and Class Consciousness", in "Lenin" he portrayed the Russian leader as a "philosopher of praxis". By this he meant that Lenin represented a dialectical unity of theory and practice; he took Marxist theory and applied it to actual circumstances, to guide the Revolution. Lukács discusses, for example, the role of the Party in the Revolution; he argues that the party must be in dialectical interaction with the proletariat, both being created by them, and helping to create their consciousness. Lenin is therefore seen as the epitome of Marxist-Hegelian philosophy.

Equally, however, "Lenin" is a very personal response to Lenin the man and the revolutionary leader. In the light of his earlier aesthetic works, particularly "Theory of the Novel", it seems that Lukács saw Lenin as a Tolstoyan or Dostoevskyan hero; Lenin was the individual agent able to bring out the essence of totality for the good of society.

"Lenin" is a rich and rewarding book; moreover, being far simpler than much of Lukács's work, it serves as an excellent introduction to the main themes of his thought. It offers a fascinating philosophical interpretation of Lenin, as an example for Marxist revolutionaries to follow. At the same time, however, it provides a deep insight into Lukács, helping to understand why this sensitive aesthetic theorist managed to convince himself to accept the excesses of the Russian Revolution. In that sense, it helps even those unsympathetic to Marxism understand what attracts people to this revolutionary theory.

2nd most important psychological book ever written
at least it often feels that way...

this is only a good book if you are interested in actually doing first-person research of consciousness. If you don't believe consciousness exists or that it can be studied personally, this book will make you very ill...

Robert Sardello wrote a perfectly imaginative book which takes these insights deeper and broader called, "Love and the Soul" or now, "Love and the World"...very good

A Delightful Education and Inspiration
This is an extensive and innovative review of the traditional teachings of Yoga, well delivered in an engaging, conversational manner. The key Yoga teachings from the Hindu, Buddhist and Jainism traditions are systematically developed, well-woven with references to both the classic literature and an astounding range of references to other world wisdom traditions and history. Among my favorites is his linking of the four traditional goals of life from the Vedas with the Declaration of Independence of the United States and the preamble to the Constitution.

Patanjali's Yoga Sutras are, of course, discussed in depth. I appreciate his emphasis on the central role of the Kriya Yoga model of transformation - a model still quite relevant today - even though there are some differences from the Krishnamacharya teachings I have heard from Desikachar and Kraftsow. All of the more well known eight limbs of Ashtanga Yoga are discussed in depth, with much deserved emphasis on the Yamas and Niyamas, the traditional moral foundations of Yoga. Each of the seven traditional paths of Yoga are well explained in some especially educational ways, not just listing the different paths. Georg's command and experience with of the spectrum of Yoga teachings allows him to present some of the teachings in new ways, such as his 12 steps to spiritual recovery and his tests for authentic yoga.

The lecture style is easy to listen to. He peppers his discussions with questions that a modern student would logically ask, and then weaves personal experience into his answers. Feuerstein is not afraid to focus on contemporary issues with the lens of the classical teachings. For example, free market capitalism. As an economist I have a few different interpretations than his, but I appreciate the importance of examining modern situations and making personal choices from a considered moral foundation as opposed to simply self-interest.

I see these tapes as an important resource in three key ways. First, as a delightful educational and thought-provoking experience for the Yoga student in all of us - perhaps on long cross-country drives as I do. Second, for Yoga teachers brushing up on selected topics for their own teaching. The tapes have already helped me prepare for a couple of lectures I am giving later this month. Third, I see these tapes as recommended or required "reading" in the many new Yoga teacher-training courses springing up around the country to help meet their philosophy requirement.

My only regret is that these lectures on tape are not available in written form so one can easily go back to review and highlight key sections. Feuerstein is a prolific writer and these teaching are well discussed in a wide variety of his books elsewhere. In my view, however, the lectures on this tape set are especially well put together. They are an intellectual tour de force distilling many decades of study and writing. I very much enjoy hearing them in his own voice.

Luftkrieg und Literatur : mit einem Essay zu Alfred Andersch
Published in Unknown Binding by C. Hanser ()
Author: Winfried Georg Sebald

Average review score:

What can we learn from the air wars?
A very troubling book, especially in the wake of the 9-11 events. The author asks why the air war over German in the last years of WWII has not received more attention by German postwar authors. Troubling in the dimensions of the impact of the air war as he relates it: 600.000 civilian lives lost, 400.000 missions (counting single planes) flown by the RAF alone, 20.000 civilians or more killed in a single night's raid, etc. More troubling when one consideres the psychological impact on the survivors (short and long term).
Besides Sebald's question regarding the air war over Germany, it would be important to review the literature, produced by writers of the respective cultures, of air wars over Japan, Vietnam, Iraque or, now, Afghanistan.
It appears mass destructions of civiizations are not the provenance of one people or culture, hence long term morning efforts of affected people or cultures might benefit by being done jointly.
Certainly an important addition to any Holocaust library.
