More for the rich than the poor
Beautiful American Rose Gardens is a good but not a great book because too many of the rose gardens discussed in this book are too large (acres and acres). The pictures are wonderful and descriptions are well written and I recommend that rose lovers read this book. However, the book doesn't give enough detail into how a reader can create their own rose gardens, especially if they are not professional rosarians or wealthy enough to afford professional gardners. Most of the gardens in this book are owned by rose retailers or rich or famous people like Bob Hope.

INFORMATIVE, COMPREHENSIVE--A GREAT GIFT!
I was drawn to this book by the stunning pictures of roses and rose gardens. However, it is the wealth of valuable information on EVERY aspect of roses that make this one of my all-time favorite gardening books.

This book would make an excellent present for the neophyte and expert gardener alike. The author's passion is contagious. A great read and highly recommended

The Truth About Mary Rose

Very Nice Author, but Not Very Nice Book
I have read Marilyn Sachs's previous books, "Amy and Laura", "Veronica Ganz", and this book is special. Why special? To start, there is Mary Rose Ramirez. If you're familiar with "Veronica Ganz" or "Peter and Veronica", or even "Amy and Laura", there's a character there, though very minor, named Mary Rose. This isn't the same Mary Rose, though. This Mary Rose was the second Mary Rose's aunt, but when the first Mary Rose was eleven, the second Mary Rose's age, she died saving all the people in her apartment building from a fire. Supposedly. But Mary Rose, the second one, wants to find more about the aunt that died young. Yet there's no pictures of Mary Rose that aren't covered in ash. So Mary Rose, and her cousin Pam decide to find out for themselves. Yet Pam, who's father is Veronica Ganz's stepbrother Stanley, doesn't want anything to do with the first Mary Rose, even if Mary Rose, the second, does. What follows is the second Mary Rose finding a box of Mary Rose's things that she somehow got out in the fire. Ms. Ganz, (yes, Veronica Ganz is the second Mary Rose's mother, surprisingly enough)helps Mary Rose and they both find more about the first Mary Rose. After a twist of turns, Uncle Stanley confesses that the first Mary Rose was a cruel and mean sister, and that he actually saved everyone, while the first Mary Rose would threaten that he would "get it" if he didn't save everyone. This interesting book shows some characters from previous books, and it is nice, like all Marilyn Sachs books, but this is a different kind of book, one that you read, like, and then you understand what the main idea is.

A tragic story
I read this book when I was 11 and I became intrigued about the late Mary Rose. Me and my little sister used to play Mary Rose all the time--my sister was Mary Rose and I was someone else. I loved Veronica and Sachs' other books about the gang. I wanted to read more about Veronica and Mary Rose and I wrote the author in 1988 asking her if she was going to write another book about the late Mary ROse and she said she didn't think she ever would because in order for this book to work, the late Mary Rose would have to remain a mysterious figure. It was a cool letter from Sachs; hand-written and it included an autographed picture bookmark and her home address in San Francisco on the envelope! She says that it is really up to the reader to decide whether or not the late Mary Rose was a hero. THis book was different from the others in the series in that it takes place nearly three decades after the others, and this book deals with a serious tragedy thirty years before, which traumatized the family. A good book, albeit sad.

Wonderful for graduate students in communicative disorders
I am a graduate student at Gallaudet University. After owning library late fees, I decided to purchase my own copy of this book. This will be a great general reference to anything related to communication disorders and mental retardation in future papers and future job practice as a researcher.

Very good collection of mystery stories
I really enjoyed this book-I had to read it for a class I attended taught by Rex Burns. It has a very nice collection of various mystery stories in it, including things by Poe, and other writers. All in all, a very nice book.

Excellent devotional for older kids
This is the best devotional I have found for my 10 year old. Well written and fun to read, the book contains a lot of interesting facts about everything from dust to locusts. The lessons are biblically sound and clearly applicable to the everyday world. The games/puzzles at the end of each story help reinforce what you've just read. I would highly recommend this book for boys and girls

A Motivating Book
The book is divided into 3 parts: 1. Inventors and their inventions, 2. How to be an inventor, 3. For futher inspration.

Part 1: There are 20 stories about young female inventors and their inventions are divided into different categories.

Part 2: This part makes it easy for you to start inventing something yourself, which guidelines and tips for every step.

Part 3: This section has lots of good, useful resources, not just for inventing, but also for schoolwork and further reading.

I read this book around 2 years ago when I was younger, and it really motivated me to start seeing things with a new perspective and to be more creative. It's a great book for young people. It encourages one to be innovative.

A solid handbook by a recognized expert
Dougherty, a trainer of spiritual directors at the Shalem Institute, shared her expertise in this basic text. Chapters 1-3 were about spiritual direction in general--interesting and informative, but I found myself feeling impatient to get to the "group" part. Consideration of groups began with Chapter 4 and was worth the wait. The author presented a clear, sound model of how to organize and conduct a spiritual direction group and included readily understandable examples and verbal illustrations. I especially appreciated her relentless emphasis on the role of God in spiritual direction. My only reservation about her recommendations was that she seemed to underestimate the importance of discouraging spouses and close friends from being in the same group together.

Immunology for the immunologist and non-immunologists
As a new student to the feild of immunology, I was looking for a good, general, updated textbook that would bring me up to speed. There are some general immunogy texts out there however they are very non-reader friendly, especially for a novice in this field. So when I read the "Handbook" I was quite pleased to find it user-friendly to a newcomer or practicing clinitian. I would definitely recommend this book to my fellow students.

Transformations
I am sorry to learn that this book is out of print because I happen to think it is very well written. Perhaps it is a novel that can only be appeciated by a certain age group - the early baby boomers. Mary Flanagan has attempted to chronicle the extreme transformations of body, mind, and soul that occurred in the 60's and 70's. Rose Mullen is a wonderfully developed character whose life undergoes several transformations as she searches for the men who continually leave her. One technique used by Flanagan, (Rose's memoirs are directed towards an unknown person in her life) is very effective. The main flaw in this novel is the development of the character of Miles, who remains a mystery and is largely undeveloped and impossible to understand. This is definitely a book worth reading because some readers will find themselves examining their own radical transformations, and isn't that what literature is all about, discovering oneself hidden inside of the words?
