A Great Guide to Abstract Creations
The beauty of color, line, proportions, and textures are described for those interested in learning how to appreciate abstract art. The book follows the abstract movements in chronological order, making it easy for the reader to grasp the work of great artists such as O'Keefe, Kandinsky, Mondrian, Pollock, and Johns. An important reference book for any public or private library.

An excellent introduction to Abstract Art
Ever walked into a museum or gallery reacted to an abstract painting not sure of what you might be seeing and what may cause the love or revulsion? Moszynska takes the reader on an unforgettable tour of what was and how it came to be. Paintings that you have seen reproduced for years will take on new life. An excellent introduction to Abstract Art, this book is a great refresher course for those of us who have forgotten everything we were supposed to have learned in Art Appreciation classes.

A supple, fierce book for our times
Anna George Meek gives us something we can use in these times: poems that insist, fiercely, that we all belong to each other. And yet, this is not a book that romanticizes the ways in which we know each other. Instead, Meek talks about what it means when we don't know each other, when we know each other only in the violence that comes in the form of a fist or in the form of an economy that only benefits the few. The use of language is supple. We can see the ligaments that connect the sinuous muscle of her writing, and the strength is impressive. A must-read.

A great read
Anna George Meek mixes the blunt and the gentle, the cerebral and the concrete, and the result is a volume I enjoyed a good deal. One moment brings about a nice bit of wordplay, the next a chilling image of domestic violence, but there's never a moment when I don't understand how we got where we are. I particularly noticed Meek's return to moments of contact (and failure to make contact) with the strangers we see daily, be it on the bus, at the grocery store, or from our office window. In the end, I feel like we're all together, as when she says (to borrow a favorite line): "That's not my life/she says to me, but I guess it could have been." I'm taken places I will remember for quite some time. I recommend this book.

Alligator and the Tooth Fairy
The art work in this book is wonderful! I just read this book to a group of 2nd graders and it was a great book that generated a lot of participation from the students. Cute story! I would love to find more books illustrated by Shannon Kinnell, what a talented man! I plan on purchasing this book for my brother-in-law's dental office.

Hundreds of full-color images
In Ancient Rome: History Of A Civilization That Ruled The World, Anna Maria Liberati (Museum of Roman Civilization, Rome, Italy) has effectively collaborated with freelance journalist and art history expert Fabio Bourbon to lay out a beautifully illustrated and thoroughly "reader friendly" coffeetable artbook showcasing the architecture, politics, culture, art, and artifacts tracing the rise and fall of the Roman Empire. An ideal addition to school and community library collections, the hundreds of full-color images (many of them never previously published and available to the general public) wonderfully enhance an informed and informative text making Ancient Rome especially accessible and recommended to the non-specialist general reader.

Great visuals
This book is not much on narration -- but it isn't really supposed to be. The book is filled with outstanding photographs, prints, drawings, maps, and architectural plans that will be useful to anyone in the business of teaching social studies. This is one of those wonderfully inexpensive oversized hardcover books that makes you feel good just by owning it.

Great fun
For anyone who jumped rope a great deal (this excludes me) or swung the rope while others jumped (this includes me), this book is sure to have some favorite rhymes. As such, it is an interesting way to initiate cross-generational discussions - jump-rope rhymes are school yard folklore with astounding staying power. The book is also useful as a way to encourage young "couch potatoes" to get a bit of time outside with requiring outside to be a large space.

Of course, the best way to use the book is simply to enjoy it.

Hopping fun! It will take you back to your playground days.
What great fun to be reminded of the jump rope rhymes of my youth. And even greater fun to share them with my daughter. I hope you enjoy this collection of rhymes as much as we do.

Anna is one of the U.S. theater's most memorable characters
"Anna Christie," the play by the great U.S. writer Eugene O'Neill, won the Pulitzer Prize for the 1921-22 theater season. All these decades later, the play still packs an emotional punch. "Anna Christie" focuses on three characters: Anna, who has had a traumatic life in the United States; her father Chris, a Swedish merchant seaman; and Mat Burke, an Irish stoker who takes an interest in Anna. The play takes place in New York City and on Chris's barge.

"Anna Christie" is a compelling study of gender roles and expectations, ethnic conflict in the U.S., family ties and disruptions, the call of the seafaring life, and fatalism versus the embrace of free will. Particularly interesting is O'Neill's representation of various types of vernacular speech. Overall, a classic American play that deserves an ongoing reading audience.

Anna Christie
Amazing!!! The characters were wonderfully acted out and the relationship between father and daughter was such a gripping story.

Anna Leonowens: A Life Beyond "the King and I"

Fairly good book.
I would have expected such a book to be very dry, but much to my pleasant surprise it was interesting. Ms. Dow did a good job looking through Anna's sensationalized accounts of her life to find the real truth. I liked the enclosed photos of Anna and her family, and Prince Chulalongkorn. A very good biography this was.

The extraordinary woman behind The King and I legend
As a young child I was enthralled with the popular musical, The King and I. The story had all the makings of a perfect fairy tale, with Anna captivating the heart of the King of Siam. Now, with a new film version of The King and I about to be released I wanted to find out more about the real woman behind the well known legend.

Through extensive research and detective work, author Leslie Smith Dow has successfully peeled back the layers of myth to reveal a very different, but equally extraordinary Anna. Through her research she debunks some of the details of Anna's early life revealing a very unromantic childhood of poverty and squalor. This book took me right into the heart of this extraordinary woman as she struggled to survive as a young widow with two small children. Her life as a Governess at the Saimese Court was fascinating, but equally impressive was the life she led after leaving Siam. I was very interested to read of her many accomplishments in Canada after moving to Halifax Nova Scotia with her daughter and son-in-law. She worked very hard to make her mark on both Halifax and Montreal leaving a lasting legacy of work that remains to this day.

Leslie Smith Dow has done a remarkable job of giving us a true portrait of Anna Leonowens and I highly recommend this book.

Absorbing account of Florida pioneers
Can't recommend more highly. This is fascinating history which is well-written and meticulously researched.

A Florida Princess finally gets her due.
Dr. Daniel Schafer, the preeminent scholar of the Kingsley's of Northeast Florida, has written a riveting book exploring Anna, the African Princess turned Slave turned Plantation Owner. Anna is without a doubt one of the most interesting people of Florida's history. She has long been overlooked by historians, but now her story is told. Anna's story sounds like a movie script. Schafer has filled in one of the important blanks of Florida's history.
